Dave’s Picks Volume 2 is officially SOLD OUT.

Stay tuned for an upcoming seaside chat with David Lemieux as part of our Dave’s Picks series.

    ABOUT VOLUME 2

We warned you. We said there was a chance that the limited edition Dave’s Picks releases could sell out. And sure enough, Volume 1 is a goner. No copies left. (OK, even we were a little surprised it sold out so quickly.)

Which brings us to Dave’s Picks, Volume 2. The thousands of you who bought the full-year Dave’s Picks subscription have nothing to worry about. Your CDs (and the bonus disc that comes with this one for subscribers) will be winging their way to you shortly. But NOW is the time when all you other good people who are interested in purchasing this potent slice of Dead history can submit your orders.

The show in question is a three-set wonder from Hartford’s Dillon Stadium during the heart of the Wall of Sound era, July 31, 1974, four days after the release of the Dead’s fine Mars Hotel album. Dwarfed by the Wall’s irregular columns of speakers on a hot and humid Wednesday afternoon, the band thrilled the sold-out crowd of 20,000 with a far-ranging collection of tunes and jams that showed how far they’d come as musicians, songwriters and interpreters of others’ songs in their decade together.

The 12-song first set kicks off with the still-new “Scarlet Begonias” (opening a show for the first of just three times in the Dead’s entire history), and includes such other early ’70s favorites as “Jack Straw,” “Brown-Eyed Women,” a pairing of “Mississippi Half-Step” and “Must’ve Been the Roses” and “Row Jimmy.” The '73-’74 versions of “China Cat Sunflower” > “I Know You Rider” have a unique character, and this one exemplifies that nicely.

Things start to open up a bit more in the second set. An expansive “Eyes of the World” is partnered with a particularly fragile “China Doll” mid-set, and the concluding take on the complete “Weather Report Suite” is filled with impressive shifts in dynamics and purposeful jamming during a 12-minute “Let It Grow.” That set also has a good “Big River” and an excellent “Ship of Fools” (another new song that year).

Set Three starts with a couple of short selections, hits an early emotional peak with one of the better versions of “To Lay Me Down” from that era, and then really goes into gear with the onset of “Truckin’,” so often a gateway to wondrous possibilities. This one rumbles and wanders and flits and crashes and dashes all over the place during a half-hour exploration that includes what is popularly called the “Mind Left Body” jam and a full-blown Spanish jam, before eventually winding up at the docks for a deep “Wharf Rat.” The set closer, “U.S. Blues,” was one of the anchors of the Mars Hotel album (and an FM radio hit at the time); a perfect summer anthem.

All Dave’s Picks releases are mastered to HDCD specs from the original vault tapes by Jeffrey Norman, and include a booklet containing an essay about the show and period photos. The Digipak is made of 100% recycled and PCW materials on heavier paper stock due to high demand. The limited edition consists of 12,000 numbered copies.

    Re "me" Winterland '74
I think 10/16-20/74 is maybe my favorite run ever, but having already released a 5 CD set of highlights, I think it's doubtful they would go back and release the whole run. Too bad, in hindsight.

    Winterland '74
I don't agree with those that find this concert boring. I think there are many interesting passages. The main problem is the sound quality, Bob's guitar is sometimes completely buried in the mix, and it is almost impossible to enjoy the voices the way they sound (even then, there are some beautiful moments, like Jerry's singing in "To Lay Me Down"). The complete run from October 1974 in Winterland should be released one day, I think. It is the only source of really multitrack live recordings from the WOS era (it is worth mentioning that the recording was actually quite bad, that is why Steal Your Face sounds so terrible. Jeffrey Norman worked quite a lot to make them sound beatifully alive, and he made it!). It would be really nice to have a Winterland 1974: The Complete Recordings box set! By the way, this Dave's Picks features one of the worst "China Doll" I ever heard. Kreutzmann is out of tempo throughout the whole song!

    One picky comment
Rhino folks, while I appreciate the use of recycled materials in the CD packaging, your fulfillment outfit pretty much negated all the "good" that you did by shipping the product to me in a box that was about 4X as big as it needed to be, then stuffed in a couple of pieces of polyurethane foam to keep the CD from rattling around in the big box. I can't recycle those chunks of foam, so landfill-bound they are. Seems like it would be pretty easy to fix this one, no?

I have not received an e-mail about my copy of DP2 & Bonus CD yet, today is the 3rd. The first lady I talked to was completely lost, first she told me that my order was scheduled to ship today. Then she said, "no that's not right, your order shipped on April 29." So I asked, was that UPS or USPS? First she said UPS, then retracted that and said USPS. At this point I was irritated and asked for a supervisor. She got mad at me and said "I have answered all your questions, what else do you want?" I simply hung up and called back. This time I was told something else, the dude told me that my order was scheduled to ship out tomorrow. At this point I wish I had not called. The folks there are really way out of touch. I was told three different things, bottom line: they don't have a clue when my order will ship or if it has shipped or not. This is irritating to be me because it really can't be that hard to pull up a customers information. I requested a call from the management, I'm sure it will never come. Moving on, this morning I watched "Sunshine Daydream" the Veneta show, it really is some solid Dead. Dave told me that they do not own the film, but do own the audio, so maybe it will come. The show was played almost 40 years ago. I like the movie footage of all the fans and the simplicity of life in 1970. "We are going to have thirty-thousand hippies screaming for water." CP

Just killin' time waiting for the arrival of DaP2... CP, you bring up a good point about the Veneta show, if they haven't been able to work out some kiind of joint arrangement, it may mean that GD can only release the audio CD, but it would be cool if at least they could time it for release to coincide with the release of the film by them other dudes... Aside from eagerness for this release, I'm just kind of curious, from a business point of view, about how that is all shaking out... Also sorry to hear about your Customer Service fun and games.... I am one of the lucky ones who did get a shipping notice on May 1... oh Please Mr. Postman...

rne - when you suggest that the same treatment given to the Egypt concerts should be applied to Veneta '72, I hope you don't mean that you want your discs liberally coated with glue. Be careful about what you wish for! One benefit of the Digipak revival is that that particular phenomemon should not be repeated.

Does anyone know if the subsciptions orders are shipped first? There seems to be no rhyme or reason to this. If the ship date was May 1st, how can so many of us still have no shipment confirmation? You would think that TPTB (dead.net, Rhino, Globalware Solutions, or whoever else is in charge) would take care of the subscrbers first (you know, those of us that pony up the dinero before we know what we are actually buying). There are a bunch of factory sealed copies for sale on eBay already. I doubt they purchased ahead of time. Customer service has been, shall we say, less than stellar lately. Can anyone confirm if orders actually shipped? And now back to our regularly scheduled programming.....

Should there be a Grateful Dead membership where members are treated to member's only releases, discounts, and merchandise that are NOT available to the general public? There could be member's only drawing and chances to share in an ocean side chat with Dave and talk about the next release. This list of options are endless. What would a membership like this be worth?

Mine came today. This won't be a full review since I'm only on the 1st disc, but so far it's up to their (Rhino & The Grateful Dead) fine standards. A quick answer to RainDead- they are not going in order. I ordered the subscription within hours of availability but got 10775/12000 (the 1st DP was 4202). For me even though I'm a collector of music ( as anyone who has read my responses to those who complain about ltd. eds. knows) that isn't a big deal to me. That said I do think an effort should be made to send them in the order that the purchase was made. Some collectors are interested in low numbers. Once again I would like to thank Rhino (I am not connected to them in any way other than a love of music) for a really great program. Anyone who doubts that perspective should check out the Zappa site. No info, sporatic releases very expensive releases etc. Dave's Pick's 1&2 going for $150 on eBay right on. Of course asking price and selling price are 2 different things ( just ask someone selling a house ). It's called the law of supply and demand. Next year's subscription will be for a larger amount I would assume. Other than that no need to rehash the benefits to all Deadheads of this marketing stratagies. I think most people will like the packaging very sturdy. Contrarian that I am I still like a well done mini lp style (top loading stronger cardboard etc). Thanx again Rhino/Grateful Dead keep them coming

I suspect Stopbath was being sarcastic with his idea about na Elite Club for Heads to get special things I think he could have the nugget of a good idea. The GD played a number of higher priced shows for the Rex Foundation so this could build on a good charitable idea. You buy a membership say $100 a year and that would get you access to early releases, possible package upgrades( for a premium price) and other goodies. The idea would not be to prevent anyone from getting the basic music but for those who are collectors it would be a way to get some fun stuff and the money raised could go to GD appropriate charities That sounds like win win to me

simonrob: good point! I had forgotten about the glue issue with the Egypt set.To be honest, I haven't listened to that set many times. I'm sure that's the reason why I forgot it.No shipment confirmation yet, but I see lots of people are going through that shit too. A little bit dissapointing, ain't it? Another suggestion for Dave's Picks: something from 1975, what do you think?

Just saw that Daves Picks 2 sold out; that's good and bad I suppose. I got the subscription but had I not I surely would have jumped early on a complete show from '74 (yeah, sans phil and ned, but still). But in this age of digital music/downloads, why does the music have to be limited? Can't these sold out releases become available via download? Same thing with out of print CDs--the Keith and Donna CD was available on this web site for a long time and I planned to buy it but somehow never got around to it. Now it's (seemingly) gone forever, out of print, not even listed on ebay (not that I'd pay ridiculous money). Shouldn't there be some kind of site that offers digital downloads of out of print music? After all, anyone could easily make a copy of a Daves Picks for a friend for the cost of a blank CD. Why not give the original artists a better chance at making some dough by making this music available on download?

The "Order Status" feature should not be limited to 45 day period-subscription holders should stay on there so that shipping information/status of each installment of the series is indicated. right now it doesn't know you if you haven't "ordered' within 45 days even though in reality you have "ordered ' each installment. I am no technocrat certainly but I find this system to be antiquated at best. But, be that as it may, I am looking forward to this tremendous show in all it's tarted up sound glory! Keep them coming.

Yes, order status should at a minimum include all unfilled orders. I ran into the same thing with E72 box. I do think that people freaking out because they can't find out if their DP2 has been shipped yet might want to mellow just a bit.

I still haven't gotten a shipping notice either, though I'm not to worried about it. For the last few years, everything I've ordered had the shipping notice arrive after the product already arrived. Add to that the frustration that some have expressed over receiving a shipping notice and not getting the product, and it's pretty clear that receiving the product and receiving a shipping notice are not related. I have used the "Check Order Status" function and my order is listed as shipped May 1. Pretty easy to use; on the front page under your profile info after logging in. I've found this to be a much more reliable indicator of shipping than the shipping notice system. While I agree that the costumer service system around here is broken and long overdue for repair, the sense of entitlement vis-a-vis release order/frequency/date is pretty staggering. I can't think of another band that has as many archival releases of live concert material. When you couple that with the amount of material available through trade, it is pretty astounding that the band is able to sell anything at this point. But I'm still buying, and I like to think that the entitlement crowd is just loud, not numerous.

Just received shipping notice for Dave’s Picks Vol 2. Once again I am being charged shipping when I ordered the subscription with FREE shipping. I was charged shipping when I initially ordered the subscription and I was charged shipping with Dave’s Picks Vol 1. Fortunately the store was able to refund the shipping charge. After being charged shipping with Vol. 1, I received a long apology email from Dead.net stating this has been corrected. Please check to see if you are being charged for free shipping. Sorry about the whining, but somone please resolve this.

Yes as a matter of fact I was being sarcastic regarding the Elite Dead post. This subscription is making it so only the elite can get this music. Well not the elite per se, but only 12, 000 folks can obtain copies. Why is it limited editions? Who knows? I have a feeling this will change. I think "they" do listen. Change takes time. I bet this is a learning experience for all parties involved. I do think a members club like Metallica or DMB did years ago would be a great thing for the fans. I did put the 20 minute version of SEASTONES back into it's proper place on DP #2. So I am happy. There is a crazy version of Seastones from 10/16/74 that I recently heard that is crazy insane. Only part of it is on the tapers section. Here's an idea. Let's get rid of these posts that allow us to say what ever we want good or bad about the music. I was just fine when I wasn't allowed to comment or read comments. When will we know about the next boxed set? Who has the scoop?

Ripping it to I-Tunes as we speak, then to the I-pod, then to my ears as I find a cool place to drink some dank beers and soak in the jams. Thanks Dave! Thanks GD! This is a great treat! Oh, and the packaging looks great! Nice, solid case, fun artwork, great essay by Blair in a booklet filled with great photos! Jerry was so skinny! My copy arrived today too, I listened to the Bonus CD first, really groovy jam, Jerry is on fire in WRS. I'm very happy with this years Bonus CD. Just got into "Must have been the roses" on CD1, easy to see why Dave went with this show, he hit it out of the park with this pick. I'll be jamming all weekend. Lots of copies are showing up on E-Bay, it me cost you a little, but it is worth it, the Bonus CD will be pulling big bucks when word gets out how good it is. Hope everyone has their copies soon. Looking forward to Vol.3 and any other releases this year. For the record, I never did receive e-mail notification that it had shipped. Hopefully the folks at customer service can tighten up a little. Keep jamming. CP

Came, hand delivered by UPS today and got plopped into the player. Pretty rickety start for the first handful of tunes, but finally settles into a nice groove by the time China Cat>Rider starts. I am loving this show, and it's nice to have a full 3-setter! This thing is blasting in my den! So far highlights include China Cat>Rider, a beautiful Eyes>China Doll(quite possibly my favorite China Doll ever), and a smokin' Jack Straw, the Promised Land I'm hearing right now is Good Ole' Grateful Dead too! For all you folks missing out, I have little sympathy for you. This thing has been on sale for months, and I find it funny that it sells out as soon as people start mentioning eBay in their posts. No profits for you! For those of you who subscribed, or picked it up in a timely manner, I salute you! This one is meant to be played LOUD!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Up the subscription from 12,000 because 9 people are selling this on eBay? Not much evidence of sharks buying "all the subscriptions up." But if 9500 really bought subscriptions ~ leaving just 2500 for the rest, who sold it out by the release date ~ the powers may consider upping it a bit (maybe to 15K?) for the demand.

Small audio problem on BODL, don"t know if its my disc, the mixing or the WOS having technical difficulties. However I don't give a shit theses cd's make me wanna dance and smile, smile smile!!!!

People buy the discs rip the music and then sell the discs.
