Conclusion of a three-part GD Hour broadcast in memory of Dick Latvala, the Grateful Dead's tape archivist, who passed away in the summer of 1999.

This program began as a live broadcast on KPFA on August 11, 1999.

Dick and I thought up the name "Philo Stomp" for a bass solo that Phil Lesh performed several times in 1972. I was pleasantly stunned recently to hear it on a tape of 2/26/77 in San Bernardino, California; I'll be playing that one on the GD Hour in the very near future.

I really wonder what our friend D Gans will put this week after the superior trilogy of shows from summer 99 . He s done a great job pulling out some excellent programs from a really long time ago - in general - and i trust he ll keep on doing it , as it has made visiting the Dead s home page an absolute joy . Thanks GDP for the kickass GDH and TS sections = ) And thanks to Gans & Lemieux for going out of their way at times to put on great programs , as it must not be easy at times J G ' If you get confused just listen to the music play .. '

He was a special person , that enhanced our understanding / and knowledge of this band . Someone else could ve been the vault meister , but it was him . Damn , I miss him .. I remember in the spring of 1995 ( my b day is 4 24 ] , i received from my mother the DP 2 and the Dead Hockey jersey - which i still have . And Dick was alive physically in this earth world ; and he gave our lives a really bright spark . I hope our friend David Lemieux continues to do a ' serious ' job as what seems to be the one to ' carry ' the torch that Dick very righteously did for the time that he was assigned to do so . As far as the music on this DH , geez how awesome the Dark star is . And how cool to know that O Stanley has / had a good collection of material , that is not found in the vault . The D Star is amongst the best i ve heard . Id never heard this 10 28 72 D star . Very ' powerful ' That Phil - o stomp is a very ' happy ' jam . I mentioned it in the TS about 2 months ago . Jerry s use of the Wah pedal up to 74 , replaced by the envelope Wah from 76 - 77 on up , was just awesome in most tapes i ve heard . In the case of this snippet from Bears 72 tape , in the Phil - o stomp jam it sounds the way D Gilmours guitar sounds in Echoes . On a deeper note , remember that God creates everything we see, hear , touch , taste etc . Thank you God for grateful Dead music ..

What a great GD Hour! I had read the text of the DP7 interview before, but it was nice to hear it from the mouth of the man himself. And 10/28/72...wow.

Dulcet Tones and the Proper Pronunciation of Things

Always good to hear Dick's voice, and especially here as he establishes the proper pronunciation of 'Philo.'FIE-low. ('Fie' ryhmes w/ 'pie.') Not 'Phil-o,' as in the bass players first name w/ an 'o' added. I've heard it pronounced that way- 'Phil-o' -on radio shows and such and it just seemed so wrong. Whew. Now that I have unburdened myself I can get on with my day. And how 'bout that Dark Star! That's what I'M talkin' about!

-- Good job on the edit. Being able to listen to this Dicks Picks at the touch of a button, bliss. -- RTA/CDJ austintx - It might not be pure " Live Dead " but I'm not hung up on beginning, middle, end. Now relax and enjoy.
