Auction of Rare Grateful Dead Photos by Amalie R. Rothschild to Benefit Baltimore Symphony

A while back we told you about a very special event happening on Baltimore on August 1st: the World concert premiere of composer Lee Johnson's "Dead Symphony," an orchestral setting of some of the Grateful Dead's best-loved melodies, to be performed for the first time in front of a live audience by the Baltimore Symphony Orchestra.

Among the attractions of the gala premiere will be an exhibit in the lobby of Joseph Meyerhoff Symphony Hall featuring rare photos of the Dead taken by Amalie R. Rothschild (a Baltimore native), who, as the house photographer at Bill Graham's fabled Fillmore East, recorded some of the most memorable images in rock history.  There will also be an auction of the custom-mounted-and-framed, limited-edition, museum-quality photographs, printed under Rothschlld's supervision, numbered and signed by the artist. 100% of proceeds from the auction benefit the Baltimore Symphony Orchestra.

Even if you can't be in Baltimore on August 1st, you still have a chance to bid on these exquisite works of visual art: the auction is also taking place on eBay. For pictures and descriptions, go here.

    NPR Story 7/26/08
Heard this great story about the symphony on NPR this morning. It sounds spectacular! Wish I could be there. . . http://www.npr.org/templates/story/story.php?storyId=92932316&sc=emaf "She has no pain, like a child, she is pure, she is not to blame."

    Just can't do it
I just cannot see paying money for photos of the band. I've always felt that the dudes at the shows were scamming everyone by selling photos. I mean why not share the photos like we share the music? The guys who take the pictures are not doing any more work than the guys taping the shows so why should the photographers be able to sell the pictures and the tapers cant sell the music. Dont get me wrong I would never condone the selling of bootlegs. The photos should be free or at max the price of blank photo paper and not a cent more.

but at a reserve price of $400 or $500 apiece rather pricey for me. No bids on Ebay yet. I hope folks enjoy the show!

I contest that the prices of concerts ( thanks to the Eagles' $100 ticket for their reunion tour) are "out of sight" and not the way the term was used in the past!!!!! I remember the $ 7.00 cash line in Saratoga NY in 1983. Boycott the concert if it makes you feel outraged!!! There are alot of low cost or no cost entertainment that is still alot of fun. Where has the day gone when people shared addresses, photos, tapes???? That is my recollection of the Grateful Dead!!! Call an old from the days and meet them. That's fun!....and of course listen to the great sound boards that the dead allowed people to tape off their board. Adios, Hotchkiss the Doctor
