UC Santa Barbara
My first encounter with the "Wall Of Sound". Incredible! Old & In The Way, Maria Muldaur & The Grateful Dead - a long day in the hot sun with no shade. There were a lot of "Crispy Critters" that day. One friend was too baked to drive his car back to San Luis Obispo. I had to drive a hot rod '57 Chevy with a 4 speed. I had never driven a clutch before, very interesting 100 miles!
Wall of Sound
This was one of the largest show I had ever been too as far as numbers of people. It was real hot, but the sound was very good. It was nice to hear the new stuff and just lay back and bake...
Fire on the Mountain
Fantastic show. There was a forest fire in the mountains behind the stage. Opening new song "Fire on the Mountain" was a perfect fit. Big Bill Walton was there along with a huge crowd.
The Wall of Sound
The Wall of Sound was amazing. People kept asking the sound people to turn up the volume. They didn't realize that the sound was loud, but it was un-distorted, so it didn't feel loud. My friend and I headed home after about 6 hours, and half a mile from the stadium the sound was still loud.
My first show!
Hey now! I was 16 years old. My brother and a friend drove to UCSB. I double dosed...before the weather ballon oozed its purple haze on the crowd. Man the worm turned over and over that day.People forget that Commander Cody and the Lost Planet Airman also played that day. Maria Muldaur, Old and In the Way, and the Dead (with out Mickey) and with the Wall of fucking sound, man!I finally got a board tape of the show in
1990. It was as great as I tripped it was, and better than I remembered. A local LA DJ, on his show, broadcast that his first show was UCSB and he commented on the weather ballon and the purple haze. Livinit, lovinit...
Nothing left to do but smile, smile, smile...
Shockman
Dajiggs
I don't know what show Dajiggs saw at UCSB on May 25, 1974.But it did not include a performance of Fire on The Mountain. Nor was there a fire in the hillsides behind the stage.
That actually sounds like a show I saw at Ventura County Fairgrounds, in 1985. Which was also an amazingly hot show.....
Shockman
mistaken identity
i agree with shockman the Fire was from 85 at Ventura as Ojai was on fire in the hills behind very great show one of all time favs
