    indeed, no instruments.
I think Hunter's acoustic was the only instrument on hand and they just gathered around and sang. If you'd asked me 20 years ago what they were singing I could have told you, but today, nooo... There are probably tapes, though.

I took this photo when the Dinosaurs played some holiday festivity, probably the menorah lighting or some such celebration, at Union Square in San Francisco. I'm pretty sure it was 1984, because Hunter left the band shortly thereafter, but I'm prepared to defer to someone with a better memory.

Lighting was horrible (all else aside, it was raining, and the guys are singing while huddled under an umbrella. The colors are washed out as a result, and this print, which turned up the other day, isn't in the best shape; if I find the slide I'll upload a better version.

(l-r): Spencer Dryden, Peter Albin, Barry Melton (largely hidden), John Cipollina, Robert Hunter, guy whose name I can't remember to save my life (in wool hat and shades), Steve Keyser (Dino manager).

I just stumbled upon this photo. Always gives my heart some peace to see Hunter's image. The guy with the hat and shades looks like he could be Hunter's twin, hahaha. Thanks marye. "You know what the trouble about real life is? There's no danger music."

Hi Mary E. Say, this old Philly boy didn't make it out to California much ('til I moved out here in '98), but one of my trips was for the Dead's New Year's run at the SF Civic Center at the end of '83. I caught this show too, which I'm pretty sure was within a couple of days of Christmas, 1983. It was a Nobody For President rally, for good ol' Wavy Gravy, and people had signs, like, "NOBODY should have that much power," etc. I remember Wavy got a little shock when his wet lips touched the mike at one point, and remember Wavy kidding the lead guitar player, saying, "It's John Cippolina in the daytime!" I can't remember any songs, but I remember what was supposed to be a full Dinosaurs show turned into Hunter on acoustic, maybe a bongo or two and background vocals. No one could plug in cause of the rain... Alan Sheckter.

This photo was taken in 1984 at a Union Square San Francisco Rally for Nobody For President. With Campaign Manager Wavy Gravy as emcee, DINOSAURS were prepared to play a hot electric set. But the rains canceled the use of any amplification, so the band gathered around under cover and sang a few tunes to Hunter's acoustic guitar. That's me on the far right....I was the band's manager. If you're interested in a great new 3 DVD Set entitled Recoil: John Cipollina, visit www.johncipollina. Lots of previously unreleased concert footage, and interviews with many of John's family and peers including Jerry Garcia, Dan Healy, and Bill Graham.
