The Dead Rock the Cradle of Civilization

2-CD/1-DVD Collection Rocking The Cradle: Egypt 1978 Celebrates The 30th Anniversary of the Band’s Historic Concerts at Giza With Previously Unreleased Audio and Video

Fans Who Pre-Order on Dead.net Will Receive an Exclusive Bonus Disc Containing Additional Egypt Performances.

Available September 30 from Grateful Dead Productions and Rhino

In the fall of 1978, author and counterculture icon Ken Kesey reported to a close friend that he had recently witnessed “the latest Rocking of the Cradle of Civilization.” The course of events that he went on to recall was the Grateful Dead’s assorted family, friends and fellow Pranksters—“Pyramidiots” of various origins—descent upon Egypt’s Nile Valley that culminated in three legendary concerts performed at the foot of the Great Pyramid in Giza. Although perhaps unintentionally, the entire adventure might have been easily seen, as Kesey did, as one very special contribution to the then-critical Middle Eastern peace effort. To commemorate the 30-year anniversary of this cosmic convergence of sound and sphinx, Grateful Dead Productions and Rhino will release ROCKING THE CRADLE: EGYPT 1978, a collection of highlights from this historic three-night stand. The 2-CD/1-DVD set will be available September 30 at regular retail outlets and www.dead.net for a suggested list price of $34.98. Fans who pre-order the set from Dead.net will receive an exclusive eight-song bonus disc that includes additional unreleased performances from the Egypt run. A digital version that includes all the CD content will also be also available.

Recorded September 15-16, 1978 at the Gizah Sound and Light Theater, the original 24-track recordings have been mixed and mastered for this set in HDCD by Jeffrey Norman for optimal sound quality. The two CDs contain 18 tracks featuring more than two and a half hours of music. Except for three performances that appeared on 2004’s Beyond Description boxed set, the tracks on ROCKING THE CRADLE have never been released. The accompanying DVD features more than 100 minutes of footage, including 13 songs from the third and final Egypt show, which took place during a rare lunar eclipse. It is misxed in 5.1 surround sound and presented in DTS surround and PCM stereo sound. Legendary promoter Bill Graham called this show “one of the great experiences of my life.” The DVD also includes a featurette titled “The Vacation Tapes” which catches never-before-seen candid band footage from the trip. The set comes in pyramid-inspired packaging and features rare photos from the trip and liner notes by longtime Dead associate Alan Trist, who was pivotal in making the trek to Egypt happen.

Trist recalls that “the Dead long dreamed of playing at the foot of the Great Pyramid.” However, pulling off this dream proved to be a monumental task as no other American band had ever performed there. The band spent months planning and making arrangements with the Egyptian Ministry of Culture. The band agreed to pay all of its own expenses for the trip and donated all of the proceeds from ticket sales to several Egyptian charities, as well as the Department of Antiquities, which preserves the country’s ancient treasures. Another major challenge was the minimal amount of power available at Gizah, which required the band to bring in an enormous generator to power its state-of-the-art sound and recording equipment. In the end, the massive effort paid off. The shows were spectacular successes, attracting a mix of world cultures including American Dead Heads and European fans as well as curious Egyptians and Bedouins on camels drawn by the unusual spectacle.

Unbeknownst to the band at the time, these shows would soon have a remarkable historical context. On September 17, the day after the last show, the Camp David Peace Accords were signed after nearly two weeks of secret negotiations. The Accords lead to the Egyptian-Israeli Peace Treaty, which made Egypt the first Arab country to officially recognize Israel and ended a near 30-year state of war between the two countries. One has to wonder if the Dead’s message of peace and love might have had some sort of impact on the negotiations.

ROCKING THE CRADLE features Jerry Garcia (guitar, vocals), Donna Jean Godchaux (vocals), Keith Godchaux (keyboards), Mickey Hart (drums), Bill Kreutzmann (drums), Phil Lesh (electric bass, vocals), and Bob Weir (rhythm guitar, vocals). These performances took place just a few months before the band released Shakedown Street, its tenth studio album. The shows featured performances of several songs from the upcoming album, including the title track, “I Need A Miracle,” “Fire On The Mountain,” and an updated take on the blues standard, “Stagger Lee.” The band also peppered its Egyptian setlists with classics like “Deal,” “Truckin’” and “Stella Blue.”

    Filthy lucre, eh?
So what's wrong with making money? Rhino is not in business for their health, their in business to make money. Let them make millions for all I care; good for them. What's it to me if they make money? This idealistic hatred of wealth is sophomoric and a hypocracy.

    Calm down
Folks everyone will have different opinions and such. If you don't like the discs the answer is simple, don't buy them. I think in our community we are very privileged that we have had the opportunity and more importantly the encouragement from the artists involved to distribute their live material freely. Yes money will be made off this, but such is life. Plus why shouldn't the effort that went into these packages be rewarded. My self I don't buy every Dead set that comes out simply because I can't afford it. But when I can, I like doing it. My reasoning is that it will encourage and enable people to continue to produce quality packages for us, and in return I don't mind giving them some money so they can continue to do so (this includes not only the band but the other artists, musical, technical and otherwise that are involved in these productions). It's the same approach I take towards artists I enjoy in general. If I like thier work I don't mind shelling out some money so that the artist can be free to have more time to create. Remember we can all act as patrons in our small ways. I see it as allowing an artist some freedom from financial concerns so they can produce. In the case of the GD, a band that is no longer an entity, well for me it's more about support the folks at GDP so they can keep on going. I enjoy their products and I'll buy the ones I'm interested in. But why complain about what you are not getting? Suggesting is fine, but why complain? I'm no guru on the industry, but I think it must be rare for a group like the GD to be able to put out so much material eventhough they are no longer an entity. And hey like so many have said, copies of the show are circulating, so if you want the complete shows I'm sure you can find them. Now I know folks will say that the amounts of money involved are at issue. That artists make huge sums. That's true. And yes it gnaws on my noggin at times. The world isn't perfect and balance is in short supply...so I'll just try to keep on doing the best I can. Okay enough rambling, back to work for me...have fun all

so now all the pretty order buttons and special offers have vanished along with my last post (entitled 'you've got to laugh') and a few others besides. Or was that another page? Or did it happen at all? I give up.

So CosmicBadger is confused - but not half as confused as I am. Indeed all the order buttons have disappeared, but they were there when I looked yesterday (and ordered, as stated in my post of yesterday). What has been going on in between is more than a mere mortal can understand. Having placed my order, I printed out the on-screen invoice, then checked my mail. The standard "Grateful Dead - Order Placed" mail arrived seconds later. Everything in that mail was correct. So far so good. A mere 4 and a half hours later, I received a second mail, this time the standard "Grateful Dead - Order Shipped" mail. Everything in this mail matched everything that had come before. In between mails, did I fall asleep for 6 weeks, did my watch stop or did I get caught in a time warp. As far as I am aware, it is not September 30 yet, so what is happening here. I guess I will just have to wait and see. If nothing else, it looks like I may be in pole position as regards posting a review. Help! Marye!

we've had some computer weirdness (to put it mildly) but this is over the top. I'll find out what's up. So sorry, folks.

(see my previous post) A string of new mails have arrived from Dead.Net Store - The first confirmed the weirdness, stating that an "internal system error" had occurred, that the original order had been cancelled and had been replaced with a new order. The second was notifiication of the cancellation of the original order, while the third was a new "order placed" notification. I guess (I hope) all is now sorted. If you had anything to do with this getting sorted so quickly and seamlessly Marye, thanks a lot - your efforts are appreciated. If the CosmicBadger has not given up completely, he will now find that those pretty order buttons and special offers have now magically reappeared. I do not know if there is an info page for Road Trips 1.4 - if there is, I haven't found it and therefore have no idea of the release date.

...you were actually able to place an order? I can't find a page with buttons on it, period. Still just the original announcement page, and no mention of the Egypt set at the store at all. Hmmm.

http://www.deadnetstore.com/egypt1978.aspx was up for a while and has now vanished. Even when I do get to ordering I know that the system will not accept my credit card due to an unexplained problem with my French address, so I will have to make an long and expensive phone call to California, explain the problem (again) and convince the person to bypass the credit card security system so I can obtain the product. I have been pretty patient and ordered everything so far but actually I'm going to pass on this one ...its not my favourite Dead period anyway and I shall make a no doubt futile protest by withdrawing my custom in this case.

I knew this was gonna be another disappearing page...so I saved a copy, you know, for evidence! CB: do you really catch a lot of crap because of a French address? That's lame, you're a valued member of the international Deadhead community, I'd've thought.

that is all... I fondly hope all this will be fixed soon. Meanwhile, Badger, if you change your mind send me a PM and I'll see what I can do from sunny California to eliminate this pain and suffering.

Indeed the linked page has reverted to the frustrating "This product is currently unavailable" version. Even if one bookmarks a page when it appears (recommended), there is no guarantee that it will stay good. Using the link I posted, I have seen many different pages come and go over the course of the last few weeks. CosmicBadger - I am surprised to hear that you have a problem with ordering using a credit card and a French address. I always order with my credit card and my address in Holland and never have a problem. However, it is obvious that we are not dealing with a particularly stable website/server here. I just had to laugh to keep from crying.

not sure what happened but when I ordered RT1.2 the system stopped accepting my credit card and I was told I could only order by phone (it worked fine before then). Since then I have had to do just that and no one has been able to explain why! Credit card works fine with everyone else. Sorry to be whingeing so much and thanks for kind thoughts. Been sick all week, Mrs Badger is away so I've only had the dog to look after me and he's a lousy nurse. Bit grumpy but I'll get over it. 'Valued member of the international Deadhead community' Fine sounding words even if undeserved...but maybe I should print that on my business card!

Just to comment on Cosmic badger situation, i am French and have been ordering on dead net for years without any problem. Dead net has always been looking after me kindly...The only thin i can complain about is the delay to receive the orders: 4 weeks.... so if there is anything Mary could do about this it would be great...

Although the store is not the fastest when it comes to International shipping, I typically receive orders (to Holland, mostly via France or Sweden) within 2 weeks of despatch. For me this is acceptable - which is good as there is little I can do about it. What I am happy about is the fact that their International shipping rates were reduced a few months ago - by around 50%. Now their rates are reasonable, previously they were obscene. Credit where it is due.

correct! efforts have been made to reduce the cost for international shipping and it has been greatly appriciated. nevertheless i noticed regularly that from the release date of the products to the delivery for Europe ( i can't comment on other parts of the world) there are more or less 4 weeks. I just thought there might be a possibility to get the products send a bit more quicker. So if there is anyone with Dead net in the logistics area who could ahve a look at this it could be great... Because by the time it is the 30th anniversary for the Pyramids concerts, the 4 weeks delivery will turn the box set into the 'from egypt with love' concerts... Anyway it is just a simple comment and again i just want to reassess how nice and kind Dead net people have always been with dealing with my requests. I remember ordering some clothes for my kids and having lots of questions for size and delivery ( i wanted them for xmas) and i always had great support and quick answers..

When the links went active for a brief time I managed to get in a preorder for the special package of Egypt '78 and RTv1n4 . I even received an order confirmation and number. Hope this doesn't mean I will have to reorder... but I haven't received any kind of cancellation notice as of yet.

Sounds like the ol' pranksters have found a way into your server from beyond the grave. Always mystical happenings when mixing the Grateful Dead, and Egypt. Jerry and Ken are getting a good chuckle out of this one. I can see em now "Lets put this egypt thing on sale, then take it back, then put it on again...now take it back! look how the dead heads are all freakin out! Hilarious!!" "Music is the best" - FZ

Musicrama comment made me laugh big time! Spot on, sure Ken would have enjoyed such a trick!!! Now Jerry would have probably commented with something like:No, don't buy our records, steal them!!!!!!!! i managed to see a set of the pyramid box set. Somehow i am confused as i can't find it on this website. Clearly there are some special vibes going on with this release....

These GD Egypt tapes are great! But…Ratdog… Phil and The Phriends…I am sick and tired of GD cover bands. What’s that you say? Well, let me remind of 2 very universally fundamental truths: 1. There WAS NOTHING like a GD concert, and 2, there IS NOTHING like a “The Dead” concert. We, the People, need the DEAD in concert! JGB was also a cover band, (by-and-large the best one) but numerous scientific studies and the history books each have demonstrated that Garcia always gravitated back to the GD. C’mon guys! Get together for at least one show a year. New Year’s Eve! Oakland! Our country is falling apart and it needs a show. All peoples of the earth NEED this show! One Oakland show a year to keep everyone and everything in perspective. Thank you.
