Melbourne? Deadhead? Hey that's me. Been on the bus since, um, early '70s, saw the band only once (Winterland, June, '77) and then went off on a whole grunge>New Orleans>jazz thing until a few years back when I started acquiring a whole bunch of live stuff. Thankfully, the timeslot of my PBS (106.7 FM) show The Pearls has shifted from high-profile, jazz-only Sunday arvos to a much more relaxing 11am-1pm. At the moment most shows are going like this: about 1/3 jazz, mostly pre-WWII; about 1/3 live GD; about 1/3 western swing and country; plus whatever else I feel like playing. I'm getting good feedback on the GD stuff. Some from geriatrics like myself. But some, too, from younger folks. Melbourne's a very hip music city, but AKAIK there's never been regular Dead on public radio. So while various generations here are more than familiar with, say, the Velvets and even the 13th Floor Elevators, the Dead could be a bit of a blind spot. I'd love to get together with any melbourne Deadheads. Send a PM here or go to weirk@heraldsun.com.au ********************** It's simple: Go Socceroos, Go Victory, Go All Blacks, Go Storm. And turn up the volume. And then some more.

There's not many in New Zealand I can attest to that. At least not ones who actually made it to shows. I was born there and spent quite a few years there at different points in time. I'm the only actual tourhead from there that I've ever met and I've traveled throughout that land many a time mixing it up with the alternative folks of the various towns and scenes. There are a dozen or so that hit up a few shows though that I've run into here and there. There must be at least that many again that I didn't run into. I guess that makes me the King of the New Zealand Deadheads... ha, ha! ;) Are you kind?

I just got turned on to this site... don't know why it took me so long to figure it out.. but then, I didn't find the dead until 1978... I managed to see over 300 shows in the time remaining! A transplanted head from San Fran and missing it a lot... happy to know there are some of us down here too. hope I can make the next meet-up! will be going to the US and to SF at beginning of June for a wedding (yea!!) but if anyone wants to meet before June 2nd, please post. I have a huge collection from the vault - like 2500 CD's and would like to share - God bless Ron Marcus for that. Missing the boyz and the SF music scene.. anyone here know Nick Gravenitis?? Cheers, Carol

Marye - do you know Ron? I think a lot of us do even if we are not aware of it! Ron is great. Will see him at a birthday party in 2 weeks in S.F. Before I left to come down here, he copied off everything he had from the boyz vault (which was opened and shared when rumors started to fly about someone selling the catalogue to Sony or some such entity - head 'em off at the pass - y'know?). He and Patti live in a great little house in the Oakland hills but he is still heavily into the dead and making his own CD's as well. Lots of spoken word and lots of help from his friends.. on guitar, piano etc. He has made over 100 CD's of his own stuff.I am in Mel - Elwood (Blues Brother # 1) actually - and would love to come to a meet here with you guys. Dying to know some of my fellow travelers down here. I'm off to the US June 3rd for 3 weeks.. but maybe when I get back there will be a meet?? Cheers to us all.... My personal email is carol@siriusb.net. Do you know that Sirius B is the Dark Star??? Carol

I think it was probably me who accosted Russell8 at Womadelaide a few years back , Ive met a few US heads there and one year we met Phil and Jenny from sydney and posed with our Dead shirts on you can see us here, we are all much greyer now !http://www.ukrockfestivals.com/womad-review97.html yes, there are at least five of us here although we don't meet up as much as we used to do when the band was active , at one time there were about ten of us but a few moved back to the US . This year ( 2008 ) I was wearing my skullfuck t shirt at Womadelaide and a young dude approached me , a US cat who said he was a head ,into a lot of jambands as well, currently living in SA . I gave him my email addy but he never got in touch ( I accidentally kept his pen , was this why ? :-) Anyway this is to let people know about our homepage which seems to only come up if you search using particular keywords, its www.ukrockfestivals.com/AUSSIEDEADHEADS.htm theres a fairly big list of people Australia wide so use that to contact others in your area .If anyone in Adelaide wants to meet us contact me via this list or via the website .

So just out of interest - and before figuring out if I could afford the airfares - I tried to place an order through Live Nation for tix to the Dead's two Mountain View shows. No dice. US or Canada only! Yet some European Heads have had the temerity to moan about there being no European shows. At least the band has toured Europe at various times, starting in 1972. As far as I'm aware, no GD family band has ever performed in Australia or NZ. So I'm back to ordering the CDs - and paying the rip-off shipping fees. Kenny - NOT A HAPPY CUSTOMER

A bunch more - thousands upon thousands - would front up should anyone bother to tour here, and certainly a bunch more than "our" little and rather unrepresentative diehard club. Oh well, I guess I'll just continue to disappear up my own arse-full of old hillbilly boogie rekkids! :)

Hey Now,No more crap from the peanut gallery. I'm sure that a world tour would include a stop in Australia if not NZ. Just as sure thousands would turn out and as a result sales of music and merchandise would go up. It would be a smart move on the part of The Dead if they were in the mood for a little traveling Aiko-aiko w/shrimp or tempe on the barbie!

I purchased View from the Vault III & IV and love watching these. Very Nostalgic and of great quality. Also love to stream the soundboards from the Internet Archive: http://www.archive.org/search.php?query=collection%3AGratefulDead%20%2F… There were definitely some great concerts that were circulated on tapes, so be sure to check out: Barton Hall Ithaca May 8, 1977 Capitol Theater Portchester, NY February 18, 1971 Dane County February 15, 1973 Ice Cream Kid

wannadanceWanaka, New Zealand We are Everywhere! Experiencing a moment of nostalgia for dirty danced out feet yesterday, I googled deadheads in New Zealand. I was just sure I was the only one. Whenever I speak of my touring days, people here think I'm talking about being a groupie or heavy metal. Then, I really confuse them by putting on some bluegrass! I was so excited to find this forum, I stayed up way too late reading the entire thing and posting some overly enthusiastic private messages. I obviously don't get out much! Oh, and how is Owsley doing? I heard a few years ago that he was in hospital. The last time I saw him was in S.F. at the Fillmore West, Trey from Phish was playing with the boys from the Dead and Owsley was working at the Rex table. He looked strong as an ox, so I'm hoping that he recovered well from whatever ailment he was suffering. I still wear my belt with pride, after all these years.... Being a transplanted american with a kiwi husband, I don't really know much about the jam band music scene here. The babies, garden, and animals keep me happily close to home, too. My days of traveling great distances to satiate my music cravings are on hold (It's such a long long way), but I could be persuaded to see some live music, if I knew of a band worth seeing that came close enough. I've been here 3 years, now and I love NZ, but I miss dancing with my posse. I'd love to "trade tapes" or download some music. Your Melbourne group meetings sound like fun. If any of y'all are tempted to roam this way to ski or anything, I'd relish the opportunity to show you some great southern hospitality! Forever grateful

wannadanceWanaka, New Zealand We are Everywhere! I think I get a bit nostalgic around Jerry's birthday every year. I appreciate the warm welcome, Mary and Chas. I just downloaded a little bit of this year's High Sierra Festival 4th of July show from Leftover Salmon's newsletter. The kids and I have been dancing around the living room together. Mary, are you a musician? I've had a lot of good times in Oakland. When I moved to New Zealand the lack of live music was a bit of a culture shock for me. I decided that instead of whining about it I would have to make my own. Easier said than done. I bought a nice semi accoustic guitar, but I am still pretty challenged to bend it to my will. I think it has only made me more appreciative of 'good' music played by others. I'm really interested in finding out about jam bands in NZ and Aussie! Any NZ dates, downloads, links to sites are appreciated. cheers!

Any possibility that the Dead or Friends of Phil or Rat Dog or String Cheese Incident would tour NZ in 2010? Have regard for your covenant, because haunts of violence fill the dark places of the land. Do not let the oppressed retreat in disgrace; may the poor and needy praise your name. Psalm 74

Im a young (19) DeadHead livin in Melbourne, unfortunately i never even got the chance to see any Dead shows. i only heard Grateful Dead for the first time about 4 or 5 months ago but since then its pretty much all ive been listening too, as well as getting into alot of bluegrass and folk. Ive been drumming for around 5 years and for the most part ive been in jam bands, and im always looking for more people to get together and have a jam with. I would love to meet up with the Melbourne deadheads if your all still having those get togethers, and if you would welcome a young DeadHead, but from reading on here it doesent look like theres been one in a while, if someone could please get back to me that would be great.
