hi all .. sorry it's been a while since i posted here, i got consumed in work and i wish i didn't, it's nothing but a headache to work in this part of the world and im suffering a work hangover.well, so far im the only deadhead in the middle east that posts anything here except for my friend Trificta who is actually in the far east but extends his kindness to come check every now and then, i wish there were others who are actually physically here as it gets quite lonely to keep hangin out with the "common" folks. actually i just realized that may be the reason why we have so much trouble here, there are'nt many or any deadheads! quite often i find myself educating ppl about the dead, actually in every encounter i make with new friends, and its funny that the education process differs from one person to another as there are individuals who require less or more input than others depending on my initial analysis of their mentality, spirituality, comprehension of the world, music and many other factors. what i noticed though is that everyone that i exposed to GD's music and the GD scene in general loved it and even love it more when they realize the meanings of the lyrics and know more about the deadhead society. today i want to pay a tribute to 2 brothers who are at the moment in central jail here because they got caught with a couple of J's of some brown, cheapshit weed. they got sentenced 4 yrs (min. sentence) in jail and they're only 24 yrs old, what a waste of youth and what injustice. my love goes to K-nash and Hessie, i love and miss them alot. pls say a prayer for them or think of them for a moment maybe the power of collective thought busts them out. it's so sad that they're only allowed 1 phone call a month and 1 visit by 1 person a week!! i hvn't been to see them, i'm afraid of doing so due to the sensitivity of the situation and i dont want to be put under suspicion for just visiting them!! so it's a bad situation all around. peace ..

Once again, thanks for contacting me Greg, I only regret we didn't have enough time to finish all the discussions we started, I really valued your diverse opinion and totaly have respect for your courage and wisdom which you gathered from venturing to the East and looking at things from a different view. There's a lot more to show you or anyone really next time you come around like sailing in the Gulf, desert safari and camping, the east coast on the Indian ocean, swimming, diving, the dates farms, organic farming, local people's heritage, many middle eastern restaurants and my home cooking :) This place is very peacful and diverse and everyone is very welcome to visit, there is no hatred here towards anyone, everyone is minding their own business and it is sort of an interantional get together place, yes very much like The return of the Jedi movies and all beings in 1 place, the only down side is the traffic is %$&%ing awful :) see'ya

Marye, Yes Dubai is very cool and very diverse. Many people wearing their traditional clothes from all over the Arabian Peninsula, Eastern Africa, and Northern Africa. It truly feels like an international city and similar to one of the Return of the Jedi movies where there are beings from all over the galexy etc meeting and mingling etc. Iko is a very cool guy with many ideas and i consider him a good friend. I will be back in Dubai at the end of this year so we will hook up again. But he always has the invite to Shanghai where the bars etc are open 24 hours and it is a place you can really get into trouble in. (good trouble). Whenever someone askes me what is Shanghai like i always say its like being a 10 strip!!! Anyway we went out to a nice area were there was a bar and many people just sitting back drinking and having a good time. We ran into some pretty ladies from Uganda and had interesting discussions about the healthcare system in Uganda etc. My uncle actually started the first phycology institute/hospital in Kimpala, Uganda and he lived there for some time before imigrating to Australia because of Reagon. Anyway thats another story. As we are married men and can only have an interesting talk with other beutiful women (besides our wives of course) so we went back into the pub just he and i and talked about our love for the Grateful Dead and the experiences that we have had inside and outside the scean etc. Nadel thanks for the wonderful evening and i look forward to seeing you again. Iko is someone you want to know especially when you are far from home!!!! cheers

Congratulations to all the fans of Spain, they played well all tornament. The goal they won by was great, just like in hockey the coaches say if you drive the net good things will happen. When Russia played Germany in the semi finals I heard some rich play boy there offered the Russian players two women for every goal, they lost 3-0 so much for incentives

peace through music Peace to All....aahh! Can you imagine your birthday show being the Egypt show? My son's third birthday was that show. What a great place to have a concert or even just to see one. Tomorrow is Ringo Starrs birthday,Monday July 7. He said all he wants for his birthday is to have people all around the world think of Peace at twelve noon. So since it's twelve noon every hour somewhere think of peace every hour tomorrow. Who knows, maybe together we can bring about a change of consciousness....Yeah! Peace and Love

Help me understand the true meaning of Blues for Allah - Inshallah .. i am arabic and i understand literally what it means but ... i need o know the circumstances, motive .. i know all about the background of the song and the assassination that happened but was the song written because of that incident? and why hasn't it been widely spread like all the other songs on the same album? any thoughts on this will really be welcomed and kindly thanked for. one last thing .. anyone has the cover of the album with Arabic names of songs?iko - peace

It's happening on July 23rd (i made a mistake on my previous post) @ 10pm Tel-Aviv (gmt+3). Here's a direct stream for listening: http://switch3.castup.net/cunet/gm.asp?format=wm&ak=42191714&ClipMediaI… I think you can just paste it into your browser or media-player. Even though the talking would be in hebrew, there'll be plenty of good music for you all non hebrew speakers to dig. Right after the Dead played Egypt there was peace between Israel and Egypt. Too bad they couldn't tour in the entire middle-east... That might have solved some more problems.

The original vinyl release came with the lyrics in English, Hebrew, Arabic and Persian as an insert. I just happen to have a copy of same. If you haven't seen that ikoiko, I could hook you up. Seems like that was part of the original Artists Intent to begin with. PM me your address if you'd like, and it's yours! And it just might be a good candidate for inclusion in the archives here, if the site owners have their hands on a good digital image... For all the info and links. Barak .. I missed it! :( thnx anyway, maybe next time around. ur rite about peace after Egypt tour, the Peace treaty was signed in Washington, DC, US, on March 26, 1979 (did some research:) a yr after the show but then Anwar Al Sadat was assasinated in '91 also as a result and it goes on n on. I think the situation now has gone beyond that in '78 and it will take more than a live concert to create peace between Israel and the ME specially now that Persians are involved, hmm, i dont know much poli tics but I call for puttin' down the weapons from all sides, stop the killing on all sides. right? then .. dream about couragable leadres with dignity and simply .. 2 eyes. Mr.Pid! it's been a while my friend and I drowned in work and makin trouble and reacting to it, thts all i can say. What a generous offer re. the BFA cover, i'm humbled but I will only accept it if I see you in person someday :) but for now all I want is a chance to see the Arabic translation along with the other languages, it just gives me a sense of pride and excitement. Thnx Marye for the archive cover links. I think the cover Art is exceptional! amazing graphics (I am a graphic designer BTW). Love n Peace. Nedal

Anwar Al Sadat, president of Egypt at the time GD played there was assasinated in 1981 not 1991.Sorry .. (from wikipedia) "His visit to Israel and the eventual Israel-Egypt Peace Treaty won him the Courage of Conscience award September 11, 1991 posthumously, but was an act enormously unpopular with the Arab world and Islamists, and resulted in Egypt being expelled from the Arab League." Until today, I as a holder of a Jordanian passport can not travel to Israel or Palestine and have my passport stamped at an Israeli port or else I will not be granted entrance to any other Arabic country ,, except Egypt! That's all missed up. But if I carry a foreign (non-arab or western) passport then I may go anywhere I please, and the same goes to my children which is really what pisses me off! Anyway .. this is still a music site.

I was lucky enough to have read that story before it got clobbered. And I can readily understand why it got clobbered. But it is a good story, and you should repost an appropriately sanitized version, ie leave the names/specific roles out of it. There are other ways to get their meaning in the story across without direct identification, and I'm sure that many here would be most appreciative. You can do this without endangering anyone if you write carefully. Salaams, bro. Conversation is always more interesting than recitation, so speak your mind and not someone else's.

In 1977 we started to concentrate more on the grateful dead band since we already knew that they finaly got the permition to give thier show in Egypt, heard lots of storys about how difficult it was till they managed to do it, one of these storys is" it took them 5 years till they managed to do it"any way me myself and I forgetting about all other names were very tight friends, living on ... , vitamin c and ....... made us discover the music and hear it clear , me myself and i turned our love lights on and became new DEAD HEADS in the early 78, there was only one older dead head than us in the house and it was the mom of I .I was a 17 years old american ,myself came from jordan and me an egyptian but that did n´t mean any thing for us .we used to run open partys in the house and lots of freaky freaks used to show up it was the golden age of EGYPT we were free like the eagles everything was legal no prb. getting high any where and every where , the policys were fair and fine the people were getting used to be free from the old russian system which ruled them from the late 60s to the early 70s, so any fashion or any new trend was accepted straight ahead.....waking up one day after a long wild night I came up to meand told me that there is a vip from the grateful dead band is coming to EGYPT to organize the tour for the deads, , we were so young and so happy about that AND READY TO GIVE ANY HELP IF ITS POSSIBLE, that what exactly happend we had to give a hand and run down to the wierd market and score some fresh flowers for the band , the flowers smelled very well and it was enough for the deads and may be some other bands too, we met the vip man again and gave him the roses , so he gave us some blue back stage cards ,tshirts ,posters , buckels , records etc etc. and a very special present made very special for the dead family but we had apart of it, we started to count the days cleaning our souls and brians to be as pure as we can, for sure we had lots of infos about the opening and that the former first lady and a couple of ministers gonna be there "first row" and the band gonna play mellow stuff for like 20 to 30 mins and then they would turn the volume up that the DEAD HEADS would switch places and come in the front after the delegation goes. That what exactly happend ,as they planed it, but the magic in the whole three nights is how the dead came on stage it was a dream ,let me try to describe it shortly, THE HIGH LIGHTS were zoomed to the pyramids with diffrent light colors, me myself and i saw the flag waving on the peak ,and we were peaking too and thought of going up and stealing it,but it never happend then comes Hamza eldin with his percusionists joined for sure with Mr. M Hart ,then after a while comes Mr. B. Kreuzman with one arm in the Gips after a motor byc. accident but both started to jam with the ten or 15 head band with Hamza eldin, slowly we found Phil also jamming with the band but never saw from where he came ,after a short while we could hear Jerrys guitar but we cann´t see him yet a grate jam was going on and suddenly it was the GRATEFUL DEAD on stage jamming as if they were playing since days ago and no any signs from Hamza eldin and his band they disapeard and do n´t ask me how , for us egyptians the music is a bit strange to be more clear" the native people would never understand any thing about it" BUT WE SAW THEM ON THE ROCKS AND THE HILLS AROUND THE STAGE WITH THIER CAMELS ;DONKEYS AND HORSES DANCING AND DANCING AND DANCING it was so amazing even for the band , the moon was shining upon us all and there were about 500 dead heads came to egypt specially for this show a couple stayed back in egypt and never left since, we were like 20 persons atleast together in the front line and on stage in the break had a short talk with phil and hamza eldin , KEITH was wearing his eye shades BOB was hot on the mic and jerry used to give us his back and Jamm but we could smell our roses every where i even saw jerry puting one on the amp and every now and then he goes and smell it it was pretty cloudy on stage we all fell in love with DONNA in the second set there was a dead head "she" WENT SCREAMING jerry JERRRRRRRRRRYYYYYYYYYYYYY ;till the cops came over and wanted to bust the whole bunsh of people around her and I was supposed to be busted with them but they took her and after few mins she came back, after the first show the sky was yellow and the sun went blue it was a powerful place , heard that it was phils idea to make a show in Egypt and he visited the country few times before 1978 , he is the heart of the band and Jerry is the soul , gonna text the rest pretty soon ps. sorry for my bad english and week grammar ,please don´t complain and also sorry for not mentioning the real names

you cann´t imagine how was it from sphinx square all the way through cairo you did n´t have to search for a long time to discover some new dead heads around you in town , steal your face stickers almost on every second cab and it was something happening in town , I know my city very well ,let me tell ya that the GRATEFUL DEAD show @ the sound and light theater was one of the very first concerts to be played there, might even the first one, people were getting curious and wanna know more about the band ,it was kind of the peace revolution in the whole Egypt , met Goldy and her man an upper egyptian and they were hanging golden steal your face chains on thier necks ,and it was a sign that they belong to the dead family , since this day the 15th of sep. 78 and the music never stopped , started to order from europe and the usa all the missing albums , and learning the diffrence between a head and a fan , there was lots of new music from the deads those days all at the same time but still we could n´t have enough from such a grateful band , never gonna forget this day when I wanted to move in with some friends from south africa and there I discoverd philipa a british dead head , came from greece to see them in egypt and never left it till the early 90sshe was one of the main real dead heads in Egypt , and we stayed friends for the whole time, there is also stoner and I´m so proud of this guy ,he got the treasures bran new lps and tapes lot of stuff never been used but its been made in the early 70s and late 60s we are collecting for the dead heads museum in cairo which will be soon completed there are some real good old stuff the flyers from 78 and buckels from phillesh personaly some pictures , my buddy stoner does n´t let any body to touch this stuff he is perfect in such things , so the peace started to be spread around the region , you cann´t imagine egypt and israel as peace partners it could be only a dream , but it was the best solution for both and was real peace atleast till 1981 where they shot the peace maker Mr. Anwar elsadat, and without the permition from his lady the deads would n´t have played there ,cause it was still again and again Mr. Bill Graham who dealed with the goverment and Mrs. Sadatshe was the chief of the sos in Egypt and the deal was the deads gonna play for free and they´ll be supporting the SOS children village in Egypt and thats the only reason why Egypt agreed to let the deads play in the country, no matter what they heard about them in the late 60s and they knew about the hippi movement which the deads were also involved in and that was the main reason for not allowing the band to jam in egypt which lasted atleast 5 years, enough for now and text you later,
