Good things come to those who wait! First, it took 30 years to produce this ultra-cool 2CD/DVD set from the Dead’s legendary September 1978 run at the Sound & Light Theater, outside Cairo, nestled in the dunes just a short mummy-walk from the Great Pyramid and the mysterious Sphinx. Then, Dead Heads had to endure the long, restless weeks between the announcement of the release and when they could actually order it. Well, ring them bells, because the wait is over! Dead.net is NOW accepting orders for this beautiful and historic package, Rocking the Cradle: Grateful Dead, Egypt 1978, which includes two exceptional music CDs and a DVD with over 95 minutes of concert footage from the Egypt shows (plus an impressionistic “Vacation Tapes” mini-documentary that shows the band and Dead family at play).

Much has been written about this storied adventure: About the band’s long-standing desire to play in “places of power,” as Phil put it years ago… The incredible logistical gymnastics necessary to get permission for this strangest of American rock bands to bring their peculiar alchemy to the cradle of the ancient world… The huge, scattered caravan of crazies that descended on Cairo from the U.S. and Europe, drawn to the desert by some irresistible force… The sheer magnitude of shipping in tons of sound equipment, setting up in 110-degree heat, maxing out the local power grid, trying to turn the King’s Chamber in the Great Pyramid into an echo chamber (alas, Osiris would have none of that!)… The wondrous interplay at each of the three concerts between Nubian drummers and singers and the Grateful Dead… The miraculous final show, during a total lunar eclipse… The synchronicity of that last show and the signing of a peace treaty between Egypt and Israel… Magical horse and camel rides under the desert moon…Trips up and down the Nile… High adventure at every turn!

The three Egypt concerts—September 14, 15, 16, 1978—were captured on a 24-track tape recorder with an eye towards putting out a live album to help defray the (considerable) cost of the expedition. When the Dead got home, however, they discovered that the tapes of all of the first night and part of the second were not useable because of technical problems. Then the band got wrapped up in finishing their Shakedown Street album (begun before the Egypt venture), and soon the notion of putting out the Egypt album lost its momentum. But just as Howard Carter and all those other explorers in the ’20s and ’30s couldn’t stay away from the tombs in the Valley of the Kings, the Dead weren’t about to let those Egypt multitracks stay buried by the sands of time. Next thing you know there’s a phone call to ace GD mixer Jeffrey Norman and he and vaultkeeper David Lemieux discover that despite the problems with the first night’s tapes, there’s still lots of great material available from nights two and three, including: a dynamite “Shakedown Street” (just the second live version ever), “Truckin’,” an exquisite “Stella Blue,” “Eyes of the World,” fresh takes on then-new songs such as “Stagger Lee” and “I Need A Miracle,” and the hypnotic Egyptian tune called “Ollin Arageed” that features Hamza El Din and other percussionists, who are then joined by the Dead for a jam into “Fire on the Mountain.” Wow!

And the concert video, though rough around the edges in places, is quite a revelation as well. Not only does the DVD include many of the best tunes on the CDs—you’ll dig seeing Jerry do some pretty energetic thrashing here and there—it contains two songs not on disc—“Bertha” and “Good Lovin’.” The concert material has been mixed in both stereo and surround sound, with two listening options: DTS 5.1 and PCM Stereo. The beautifully designed booklet (with cover inspired by the late, great Alton Kelley’s Egypt 1978 tour poster) contains a revealing essay by longtime Ice Nine Publishing chief (and Egypt trip co-organizer) Alan Trist, and many rare photos. All that’s missing is sand, the smell of camels and some “hubbly-bubbly”!

So don’t delay! Order Rocking the Cradle: Grateful Dead, Egypt 1978 today by going Here.

Road Trips Vol. 1, No. 4 features Winterland ’78 “From Egypt With Love” shows!

It must be the Curse of the Pharaoh’s Tomb or something, because once we’d put together Rocking the Cradle: Grateful Dead, Egypt ’78, we couldn’t get Egypt out of our system. Suddenly it seemed only natural that the next Road Trips should be culled from the great five-night “From Egypt With Love” run the Dead played at Winterland a month after they returned from Cairo. Each night the band treated the hometown fans to an extensive slide show of their travels, and at two of the concerts, Hamza El Din joined the Dead for versions of “Ollin Arageed” that helped summon even more of the flavor of Egypt. Harmonica ace Lee Oskar (of War) showed up a couple of nights, and at the final show, John Cipollina added his distinctive guitar to the back half of the second set. The two-CD Road Trips set is drawn from the final two shows of the series, October 11 and 22, 1978. Get complete order information Here.

    Some thoughts
Live Dead was a compilation. And quickly flipping through my Dick's 'Dex, I found at least 8 Dick's Picks were compilations, and the first 2 (among others) were incomplete shows. I think what got so many peoples ire up about Road Trips was when the initial announcement of the new series was made, they called attention to the fact that they were compliations, instead of just slipping them out that way. I have the first three, and have enjoyed them very much. I believe the title "Rocking The Cradle" refers to the fact that Egypt is sometimes called "The Cradle of Civilization". I think putting the Egypt '78 shows out in a best-of format is the best way to handle these particular shows, because the performances were uneven, while the recording quality and history makes them very desirable. I remember seeing Jerry and Bob on "Late Night with David Letterman" back in the late 80's, and Jerry said something like "we tend to be terrible at all the really important gigs- we were awful at Woodstock". I don't remember if he mentioned the Egypt shows or not. That reminds me that one of my favorite quotes from The Boys came from that same "Late Night" appearance, which came on the crest of the "Touch of Grey" hit single. When Dave asked how they were handling their new success, Bob said "You know how, when you're eating pistachios and every now and then you come across one that's really hard to open? I don't even mess with those anymore... -Tommo

I placed my order and as everybody else i just can't wait to receive the box set.Question for the DVD: i hope it is encoded for multiple regions unlike a lot of the previous official DVDs.... also i would like to comment on the road trip n°4. Nice concept and i am please to see there are some good intentions in term of supplying great stuff and the pairing is spot on. Nevertheless i must say i was disappointed with the set list as these concerts contain OUTSTANDING moments which aren't captured here. So if you like the compilation type and can't resist buying everything go for it but you must know that there is MUCH more to the Winterland runs of October 78 to get.... Check deadbase and a famous review for the late Dick Latvala on the topic. Get the full run!!! Finally living in France i hope you guys at Dead Net won't deal with customers living abroad last so the parcel arrive asap... Great job on the package concept and very nice effort with the 3d video. Bravo et merci Dead Net.

    Cradle
CCs Gone said: I don't get the title, "Rocking the Cradle" because of the mummy tombs? is there something I'm missing about that title? ========================================================= I'm guessing it's to do with the Fertile Crescent (Lower Egypt to what was ancient Mesopotamia [Iraq now]) being called the 'Cradle Of Civilization.'

It'd be nice to get a preview of the music, so I can check out the sound. I am assuming this is an outdoor show? I am not a big fan of outdoor acoustics, or lack thereof. Greg SC

at, I believe, the Giza Theater of Sound and Light (by the Sphinx?). Louie Armstrong, Sinatra, etc. played there along with many others. Wind is always a factor as well as sound dispertion difficulties. But hey, it was the Dead in Egypt, afterall.

Looks like nice stuff. Hope the audio quality is OK, past listenings from tapes were pretty rough sonically and musically. I remember Garcia saying they played poorly at these shows and they had technical problems and a little too much of that "hubbly bubbly"! I'm in just for the pure fun of it. Enjoy. Peace

I'm looking forward to hearing and seeing all of this! There definitely been talk of the Egypt shows not necessarily being top notch (at least musically), however should be well worth the purchase! BTW - I love Road Trips!! They sound great and kick ass!!! I generally find myself skipping through songs of a complete show to the most inspired moments (of my particular taste) and have made plenty of compilations for myself and find it even better when they are coming from the vault! Yea its nice to hear a show in its entire context, but I don't see a problem with trying to highlight moments of particlular tours. I'm sure there will be plenty of complete shows released in the future, but I hope more compilations come out as well! The more the better, complete shows and/or compilations!!!!

Another plea for downloads. This set with extras will push us over the import limit, meaning we have to pay duty and tax on it. That will close on the double the cost for us. Please can we have the download option back - or would that not make enough money? Anyway, I will have to pass on this - would have been able to afford it were I in the USA, but I am not, so I can't. We say boo.

Get used to disappointment, folks. If the RTs sell enough to make Rhino some $ they will continue to be issued. If gigantic expensive boxed sets of complete runs like WInterland 73 sell enough to make Rhino some $ they will continue to be issued (how many runs would be worth it both musically and fiscally, though? For me, not that many). Presumably they will soon try issuing some single complete shows, and if those make them some $ they'll keep doing that too. Nobody is forcing anybody to buy shit they don't want. If you are a hard-core complete-shows-only-and-no-mp3s-allowed partisan, then just wait until they offer something that fits your criteria. What I don't get is why people think it's useful or worthwhile to bitch and moan about releases that don't fit their personal criteria--many of us are just not so picky. Deal with it. Note that I am not advocating that people shut up or be censored or that the right to free speech be trampled here on dead.net. I'm just saying that complainers are wasting their time, and a little bit of mine too. Rhino bought the Vault as an investment. They will release stuff that will make them money. Period! They have no reason or responsibility to care what your personal desires are unless those desires are shared by enough people to cut into their profits. My guess is that the RTs are produced with relatively low overhead and sell pretty well, and that therefore they will not disappear just because you, personally, disapprove. *shrug* That's American Reality. As for the boyz, do you seriously think that any of the band cares even a little bit about the issue of complete shows vs. compilations being released? Do you really think that those guys care as much as you do about the putative sacredness of Complete Shows? Please. Phil himself put together a compilation (I refer to the Fallout CD). Good stuff for all is coming down the line. Rhino will be milking us for the long haul. Hang in and we will all be very happy over time. Why interfere with the happiness of your brothers and sisters by insisting on your way or the highway (see what I did there with the roadtrips reference?)? That's what I don't understand. but it's time for my bootheels to be wanderin'

I am wondering about the video quality of the DVD.I am hoping that someone gets the idea to put out a show in blue-ray and use DTS audio.I thought the ones making descision would embrace these new technologies.Whats up.I am patiently wating for this, I own every video release so far, but I wan't more. The release of American Buity and Working Mans Dead in DVD audio was a sign that things would go to the next level. What are you waiting for.Try supper audio CD too.Come on, Tech heads are wating.Regards from the Baltimore scene.

As stated above:What’s more, all preorders placed through dead.net by the official release date, September 30, will receive an exclusive bonus CD of still more great material from the Egypt gigs. Rocking the Cradle will be available everywhere on September 30, but the bonus disc will be exclusively available with dead.net preorders. Amazon.com will not be offering the bonus disc. I would recommend getting the bonus disc. So far all the bonus disc have been great (my opinion). It's your choice. In addition, whoever is selecting tracks for the Road Trips is doing and excellent job.

Somewhere I saw a post with the book titled above, by Robert Nichols, copyright 1984 by Moonbow press, San Rafael. Does anyone have a copy to sell or know where I could find one?I went to Barnes and Noble today and they couldn't help. Thanks

If you're a completist you might want it, but be forewarned, it's one of the worst Dead books ever! Just really, really lame. Boring. Stupid. You may or may not be aware that Nichols died back in 1997 when he and other members of the Heaven's Gate cult took poison in the expectation that they would be beamed onto some spaceship supposedly cruising by earth following the comet Hale Bopp. Was a big story... His later psychosis has no bearing on the poor quality of his book, however... just an interesting factoid...

Sorry if it has already been asked, but I'm not seeing the debit for my order on my account and can't remember how it worked on past orders. I'm assuming the payment is processed when the goods actually ship in late September? Thanks in advance!

In answer to aquariumdrunk's question about payment, in the past when I have pre-ordered with my credit card, payment has been taken directly. In this case, nothing happened. I queried this during an exchange of mails with customer service and they stated that payment will be taken on Sept. 30 - release date/shipping date. Indeed they seem to have changed their system recently.

Yeah, this is a nice set...I like the design of the artwork etc. again, disappointed it's not complete; I probably won't purchase it. I did purchase the winterland set. And I must say, why the GD travelled all that way to Egypt and didn't play dark star during a lunar eclipse is beyond me...the setlist is the biggest letdown of their career in my opinion...but you gotta appreciate that the GD has been the only rock band to pull this off, that sez enough!

Although this release is not just exactly what I want (see my prior post) I will enjoy this one. Nice packaging, probably very good restoration of the video for the DVD, nice liner notes, only to be read once or twice, and of course, wonderful music -- just not that overwelming. Thanks in advance for a very nice release.

Whats with getting the Bonus Dics ONLY IF YOU PRE-ORDER BEFORE SEPTEMBER 30? Like GD Net needs our money instantly. What if I don't get paid until October 1st? Then, even as a loyal customer just cause I can't scrounge together $35 before September 30th I'm out of luck? You usually seem to have enough bonus discs for the Road Trips CDs. The lame part is I want to order it just so I don't MISS OUT on that disc. Welcome to America

My pre-order was accepted on August 26th but so far the amount of money hasn't been drawn from my bank account. I do hope this doesn't mean my order is forgotten. The whole package can be obtained from other places than through DeadNet and I don't want to have to wait for months and months to get what I have ordered. Also I'm kind of worried because I only use my VISA-account to buy things through the Internet and have only transferred 400 SEK for the package and that was more than enough on August 26th but is no longer. Sure, the total price has only increased so far by circa $ 5.00 but it's much better if the amount of money gets drawn when one place an order. I have checked and my order is registered in my order history, so I hope it will ship in good time before the end of the month. And that I will have it by the first week of October. Regarding the post by Garage, stories may have been shared at http://www.ukrockfestivals.com/egyptmenu.htm but all the links seem to lead only to "404 - Error:file not found" messages. I have spent many a happy hour browsing this site in the past - it has brought back many happy, albeit hazy memories of the UK festival scene in the '70's. http://www.ukrockfestivals.com gets one in at the front door so the site is still there (and well worth checking out), but the link to the Egypt page leads to the page with only dead (sic) links. Shame. The Bickershaw bit is well worth checking out. Surely the worst weather of any festival ever - until the good old Grateful Dead made the sun shine.

they don't charge your account till they ship, I'm pretty sure, as that's what I've been told. I don't think we can do much about the exchange rate issue, but you raise a valid point and I'll pass it on.

Thanks a lot. If I hadn't looked up on the current rate, I guess my order would have been invalid since I only would have 413 SEK instead of the current 423 SEK to go through with the buy. That's my main concern, not that the package has become more "expensive" since August 26th. Micke Östlund, Växjö, Sweden ------------------------------ My record collection: jazzmicke

OK, I suppose I might not be viewed as the most impartial critic here, what with my ongoing involvement with both this site and various releases, but people who know me know I'm a straight-shooter (if an enthusiastic one) and not above the occasional scathing criticism of something. Anyway, long story short, I just got my (I guess, advance) copy of this Egypt set (I'd only heard SBD versions previously, nothing from the multitracks) and I gotta say, I'm pretty BLOWN AWAY! The sound quality is incredibly crisp and clear and present--man, it's so great to hear Bob playing such a pristine tone on his guitar throughout. I knew that Disc Two would be a winner, what with that snakey/spacey "Shakedown," the Ollin"> Fire" and the peppy (especially for that era) "Iko," but it's the first disc that really surprised me. You look at the set list and think, "Eh...decent. Nothing special." But the playing is extraordinary! Wait till you hear Jer's vocals on "Stagger Lee" and "Deal," or the beautifully rendered "Look Like Rain" (with a totally cool ending thing by Jerry and Keith that's unique!) and the dynamite combo of "I Need A Miracle" > "All Over Now"! Good stuff. Anyway, if anyone out there is waffling, this is one picky Dead Head who digs this release Big Time! We can wonder till the end of time why they didn't play "Dark Star" or this tune or that tune in Egypt, but what is here is damn good! Just my .02. (BTW, I had nothing to do with this release. It was a Lemieux/Jeffrey Norman deal all the way, and they both did a great job. You won't find many better-sounding releases than this.)

You're just making the waiting that bit harder, Blair. Good to hear that the sound quality is so good - some folks had doubted that it would sound really good, and probably not without reasonable cause.

In my oponion they should send all foreign orders (overseas that is) a couple of days or a week in advance, so we could all boogie to the sound of The Dead at the Cradle of Civilization, ahead of all the folks who don't have had the good taste to preorder the package through here. How about that?? =) Micke Östlund, Växjö, Sweden ------------------------------ My record collection: jazzmicke

your preorder is in and will ship around the 30th, as expected. Credit card won't be charged until discs ship, and whatever the exchange rate is that day is what it is, unfortunately for your immediate situation. I mention all this in public because others may be in a similar situation. Thanks!

My credit card was billed on the 18th, and I received an email on the 16th saying my order had been shipped. But alas, no tunes! Can they somehow ship a package but specify that it not be delivered until the 30th (hope not...)?

So, when a person out of the US makes a preorder using foreign currency, they don't know exactly how much its going to cost until the order ships and their account is debited? Hm.

Got a order shipped mail today ... hopefully the package will be here within ten days ... :-) MarkintheDark: Yep, that's right! This time aorund though, "thanks" to the last week economic crises, the final price has dropped an "inch" ... the amount being debited is 414,14 SEK. That's nice even though I would have been charged less than 400 SEK on August 26th. One USD is currently 6,56 SEK. Yesterday I would have been charged about 410 SEK. I think Deadmike has an excellent point. In my industry, when is a "street date" or set release date-ALL overseas pre-orders are shipped at least a week earlier than domestic orders. Is a normal courtesy, I think, and if companies did not work like that, would lose sales-and THAT is my two cents.********************************** Don't part with your illusions. Aint that a kick in the head! So keep waiting folks, and believe it when you see it. Meek ...and I aint gonna be treated this old way..."

Blair, Based upon your review, I went a head and got the CD,DVD set. I believe it will be very good, if not excellent. I have, however, skipped the Road Trips release because I have been very disappointed with that series to date. At this point, can't wait to get the multi-track release, and crank it up. Greg SC

i have the complete egypt run on master tapes that came from Healey, then the remasterd from D latvala. The shows have their moments, but over all not the greatest, but if you can transport yourself to were the show took place and imagine the dead playing while listening to ollin arageed with all these egyptian guys on stage with them then the shows take on a whole new life. C'mon its the dead at the pyramid(s) complex at Gizah! I also have the video on VHS that i got a while back in a trade. The Quality overall is ok im curious to see if the re did the old film/video for the mass release on DVD. in whole the shows are worth while having- weather you buy them or get them from someone who has the tapes or on has them on their hardrive. The egypt shows are a big part of Dead lore. show it off to your friends when you get..."see how frickin cool the dead were" "how many bands can say they played at the pyramids under a sharing of 'culture' umbrella!!! im also into entire shows... Rhino- i know you hear this all the time, but if you release some of those magic shows, magic runs, magical nights in their entirety they will sell!!

I was wondering whether to buy the Cradle+Road Trips package; however I saw the sampler video of "Beryha' and decided that I just had to have it!However, guys and gals at GD HQ, make note that my preference is for a solid hard copy of my music. The download series ought to be made available as a hard copy CD too!
