Vanderbilt University Show
I was too young to drive, so a friend and I took the Grayhound bus to Nashville ... walked down Broadway to VU. It was a beautiful Fall afternoon...the show was outdoors on a hillside. What a magical afternoon that was....Great show.
Vanderbilt Campus-Nashville 1972
Well....remembering the show,,,,,the band was at it's finest on this wonderful fall day. Dogs dyed purple and Boone's Farm wine with mushrooms! What a special place in space & time.
My first show!
As a teen living at home, I used to get fried, come home and put on headphones in bed to listen to the Midnight album hour on the radio. When Europe '72 came out, the DJ played two sides of it. I had never even heard of the Dead, but I got on the bus that very night! Wow, for a kid growing up in Nashville listening to the ABB, The Beatles, Jethro Tull, and the like, the Dead blew my mind that fateful night. Soon thereafter, I learned that the Dead were doing a free show at Vandy. I remember marveling at all the knobs on Phil's bass and at how cool Donna's hair was. I also remember meeting heads who'd come down from NY and had pitched a tent on the quad at Vandy. I couldn't believe anyone would come down from NY for a concert! After the show, I understood why!
pedal steel
I missed the show because of work but a group of friends drove up from Orlando and Gainesville. When they returned, they said Garcia played a lot of pedal steel. Can anyone who was there either confirm or disconfirm this? It's bothered me for 40 years!
I Was There !
Just left a set of 33 Hi Rez still photos for this show in a public folder on the Photobucket site. Enjoy!!
Road trip from Vincennes University > Vanderbilt
Perfect fall weather, crystal clear blue sky......orange sunshine + the tie dyed speakers covers, yowza! Was able to cruise up to the stage anytime due to the relatively small crowd. I'm guessing 3-- 5K. On our way out of town, we stopped at a liquor store and parked next to a station wagon full of black kids; dad was in the store. One of the girls looked me straight in the eye, and said "if it's all night, it's alright" which set us off big time. I think she may have been around 7--8 years old; perfect!! From then on, and on, and on.
Jerry Garcia only played an
Jerry Garcia only played an electrc guitar for the show at vandy. they played into the nightfall. the only lights on stage were the red amplifier lights.the grateful dead, at that time, was unknown. I think the only reason there were five thousand people there was it was rumerd that the allman bros. were supposed to play. it is still one of my top five concerts I have been too.
thank you for the photos.
the photos brought back wonderful memories of that fine show at Vandy. THANKS AGAIN!!!!
