My friend called the WBYG -
My friend called the WBYG - which is pretty amazing since the last one was at the closing of Winterland! What a treat! Btw, the WBYG was the 1st encore, not part of the 2nd set...
My memory of what happened.
I was there down in the pavillion. I didn’t see the band leave the stage after NFA. They paused, were talking, and then they all came out front and did WBYG. Then they left the sage. A huge crowd going crazy thing for a while and then they came back out and did the JBG encore.
First Show ever
I went to this show kicking and screaming. I didn't like the Dead or their music or their drugs. By the end of an actual show, I was stoned and more importantly a fan. I learned a very important lesson -you won't know if you will like it till you try it. I stayed for the next 2 nights/shows in the rain and the mud.
I took the road less traveled and it has made all the difference in the world.
My Favorite Show
Just amazing. The memories of the drive out from NY, along with this incredible show, have long pushed aside memories of the rain that came the next day. This night was sublime, and I'll never forget it! I saw a few that summer, but this was the show! The archive sndb on my ipod, remains in heavy rotation.
Big heavy vibe on that
Big heavy vibe on that second set...first time GDTRFB was paired with NFA in a long while... It truly was downhill from here but what a ride.
Kites
Does anyone else remember the kites flying in the middle of the night in misty rain with the theme from the "Peanuts" playing in the distance? One surreal moment from those shows.
Forget about Woodstock 2.... THIS was the second Woodstock... rain, mud, mud angels, swimming in the creek, bathing at the water trucks.......... even came with Woodstock Cid. Anyone else try that? OMG talk about matrix! I remember having to buy new clothes on Shakedown just to stay dry! Those were the days, my friends.
I remember the GDTRFB really well!
Alpine Valley...
...was one of the best venues for the Dead, they always played hot shows there, maybe I am bias, I live an hour away and that was my favorite place to see them.
Not Fade Away
The entire 3-day run was amazing, and this night in particular was tremendous, but DAMN, the Not Fade Away from this night was just off the hook. Brent and Jerry were trading licks left and right, and during the solo after the second verse, Jerry hit this note where he bent the string and cocked his head back simultaneously, with a BIG smile on his face! I remember that as plain as day, and it literally took my breath away in sheer joy. And Jerry was actually BOPPING back and forth! He was VERY animated, clearly INTO it during that NFA. And then to have him thank US before the encores?!
No, Jerry... thank YOU.
Sean K.
Bloody Brilliant!
Outta the gate slow with Good Times, but the intensity rose through a screaming MNS. Jerry LEFT HIS FEET at the end of this tune, and the second set met this high standard consistently.
The last truly great Dead concert.
Full moon over Wisconsin. I
Full moon over Wisconsin. I will always remember this show because at some point during the GDTRFB>NFA jam I was dancing so fast and Crazy that I managed to step on my own toe just as I was lifting my foot up off the ground. Yeah it doesn't seem possible but I did it. I dislocated my toe and to this day I can sit here and crack that toe at will. Every time I do it I think back to that day and smile......
Tremendous
What a gig!
Just now learned that the "When Push Comes to Shove" done that nite was the last one...and the funny thing is that I always detested that tune, but the one they did that nite was outstanding.
Can't say enough about this one, from start to finish.
the last night of good weather
I could have died after that one and been fine so lovely and so much ffffffun, where are you Marc and Carlos???
Rider
No one mentions the EXTRA drum buildup for Bobby during the sun gonna shine my back door some day!!!!! yeah yeah!!!! and then again, the BIG build up for Jerry and the Headlight line. Then Jerry SCREAMS the line! I wasn't there and it gives me goosebumps! This show is so good top to bottom. So good.
tough to beat
Been to Alpine a few times before this but this show stands up to them all and is just another reason that 89'stands as a strong year for the Dead. My friend and I just about fell over with the We Bid You Goodnight as we were pretty freaking close to the stage, and we both did a quick mind check to say "holy shit, they haven't done this since closing of Winterland". And with that the roof blew off the shed! The roar coming to the stage from the lawn was phenomenal. I know the band felt it because we sure did. A great run at Alpine for sure.
Correction
Somebody commented that the AWBYGN should be listed as part of the encore. I disagree because I don't think the band left the stage after NFA. Sorry for the nitpicking.
RAIN and VIOLIN
The rain began just as the first show ended and continued thru the entire run. By the 3rd day, stepping out of our car, we sank up to our ankles. If not for FALAFEL, being sold by some vendors, we would likely have gone hungry. I remember seeing a piece of falafel after falling on the ground and getting rained on ......the next day it was 4 times it's normal size.....hence our full bellies.
The most memorable thing besides the dead music being as great as the rain was continuous, was someone playing some incredible gypsy violin music the first night while we slept, or tried to.......it was GRATEFUL! Anyone else hear it?
My First Show
This was my first show and I have come to realise just how lucky I was to see this run! I have so many memories . . . the woodstock CID . . . Lost in the field with several hundred heads after the show trying to find the car and of course the music!!!
I went on to see many shows and this is by far the best one. It was nothing short of magical!
Mr. Bear.
Never had such a good time . . . in my life before!!!!
what might've been...
Headed to this show from Chi. Was recently engaged but my fiance had to work so stayed behind. I ran into my college buddy Kristin, she had a beautiful friend with her and we smooched the night away. Shoulda stuck with her instead of leading my fiance down my twisted road. Damn. WBYGN blew me away, as I called it as well. Alpine ruled.
Hold The Water
These 3 night were just so much fun. The rain didn't matter at all. The scene was completely loose & free. We left Deer Creek the night of the show, so we could get good camping at Alpine. That, in the end really didn't pay off cause of all the rain.
I have two really fond memories of this 1st night. The 1st is the China->Rider. Wow, that transition into Rider was electric. I'm just a sucker for China->Rider, so I'm biased, but this one was a stand-out. I love my SBD's of this run. My 2nd fond memory was during Drums->Space, dear lil BarbraAnn made the call. She was quite the newbie at the time, & I'm pretty sure I made fun of her. But I will never forget it, she made the call on We Bid You Goodnight. She has many witnesses & I'll bet she has since told her beautiful children this same story. Oh yeah, the Johhny B Goode kicked some serious ass too.
what a special show
my first show at one of the all-time great venues, plus a standout from start to finish (especially the Bid You Goodnight E: Johnny B Goode finish). Having a DVD to fill in the gaps in my memory is just icing...
If it wasn't for the Hampton
If it wasn't for the Hampton shows later in the fall, this would have been the Show of the Year, IMO.
Full moon at Alpine
This indeed was a great show. The full moon w/ Jerry singing Standing On The Moon on a beautiful summer evening. The next night was the opposite cold and rainy.

Never made it there, tho I was all over the West Coast, from the East-back then- Now a West Coaster..anyhow, I remember being so bittter I missed them when hearing all my friends recordings after they returned, bragging how I missed the best of the best. It was and is true. Just to comment on your posting,,,uh err..

out of this world
all of the alpine valley shows were just beautiful, musically and otherwise. such sweet memories. the vast alpine valley grounds became a deadhead dreamland/playground. yes, this "standing on the moon" was stellar, jerry's voice and guitar breaking the silence, a big fat moon in the sky. It was epic, really satisfying. we had so much fun up there in the wisconsin summertime.
top show and run of the era
These three shows are the Cornell '77 and Fillmore '71 of the late great Grateful Dead legacy. The MuNoSto this night is up there with '77 & '78. Great Dylan over three nights. They opened the run with a purpose on Let the Good Times Roll and they meant it. For those that never made it off the coasts, Alpine Valley is a magical place, both acoustically and natural beauty. I was 22 w/o a care in the world. The 7/15 Deer Creek show was on my baby brother's 17th bday and 7/17 Alpine, my best friends' 22nd.
Can't wait to see the movie on 4/19/12
Desolation Row
Watching the youtube of this. Why is Desolation Row not listed on the setlist?
Deal
???? The setlist looks totally screwed up. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OekWK7LorMw
DVD is from 2 different nights
cosmicstraw - the dvd release is mostly from 7/17, however they replaced the end of that night's 1st set with the end of the 7/19 show's 1st set. Never heard an explanation as to why. The omitted songs from 7/17 are all played extremely well when listening to the unofficial recordings, so I'm guessing it was a technical issue w/ the video.
College friends
I went to the show not knowing my college friends and fellow band members, the band was named Crazyfingers, was at the show. I saw my friends at the beginning of the second set. China Cat was my favorite song at the time and I was happy. After the show I was relaxing listening to a show at my car. A vendor nearby wanted me to stay awhile to drum up business with the music. I stayed awhile.
I sure wish I could hear what everyone else hears in this show
I have tried several times to "get" this.
Maybe if I had been there.
I listened to second set pre-drums last night. chinariderplayinunclejohns asleep.
I used to have DFH on vhs and even then...nothing (except for Deal).
I'll try one more time. I have nothing to lose but my mind (and a few valuable minutes of my life.)
