    White Privilege
For those who still can't grasp the concept of white privilege, or who are constantly looking for some easy-to-understand examples of it, perhaps this list will help. White privilege is when you can get pregnant at seventeen like Bristol Palin and everyone is quick to insist that your life and that of your family is a personal matter, and that no one has a right to judge you or your parents, because "every family has challenges," even as black and Latino families with similar "challenges" are regularly typified as irresponsible, pathological and arbiters of social decay. White privilege is when you can call yourself a "fuckin' redneck," like Bristol Palin's boyfriend does, and talk about how if anyone messes with you, you'll "kick their fuckin' ass," and talk about how you like to "shoot shit" for fun, and still be viewed as a responsible, all-American boy (and a great son-in-law to be) rather than a thug. White privilege is when you can attend four different colleges in six years like Sarah Palin did (one of which you basically failed out of, then returned to after making up some coursework at a community college), and no one questions your intelligence or commitment to achievement, whereas a person of color who did this would be viewed as unfit for college, and probably someone who only got in in the first place because of affirmative action. White privilege is when you can claim that being mayor of a town smaller than most medium-sized colleges, and then Governor of a state with about the same number of people as the lower fifth of the island of Manhattan, makes you ready to potentially be president, and people don't all piss on themselves with laughter, while being a black U.S. Senator, two-term state Senator, and constitutional law scholar, means you're "untested." White privilege is being able to say that you support the words "under God" in the pledge of allegiance because "if it was good enough for the founding fathers, it's good enough for me," and not be immediately disqualified from holding office--since, after all, the pledge was written in the late 1800s and the "under God" part wasn't added until the 1950s--while believing that reading accused criminals and terrorists their rights (because, ya know, the Constitution, which you used to teach at a prestigious law school requires it), is a dangerous and silly idea only supported by mushy liberals. White privilege is being able to be a gun enthusiast and not make people immediately scared of you. White privilege is being able to have a husband who was a member of an extremist political party that wants your state to secede from the Union, and whose motto was "Alaska first," and no one questions your patriotism or that of your family, while if you're black and your spouse merely fails to come to a 9/11 memorial so she can be home with her kids on the first day of school, people immediately think she's being disrespectful. White privilege is being able to make fun of community organizers and the work they do--like, among other things, fight for the right of women to vote, or for civil rights, or the 8-hour workday, or an end to child labor--and people think you're being pithy and tough, but if you merely question the experience of a small town mayor and 18-month governor with no foreign policy expertise beyond a class she took in college--you're somehow being mean, or even sexist. White privilege is being able to convince white women who don't even agree with you on any substantive issue to vote for you and your running mate anyway, because all of a sudden your presence on the ticket has inspired confidence in these same white women, and made them give your party a "second look." White privilege is being able to fire people who didn't support your political campaigns and not be accused of abusing your power or being a typical politician who engages in favoritism, while being black and merely knowing some folks from the old-line political machines in Chicago means you must be corrupt. White privilege is being able to attend churches over the years whose pastors say that people who voted for John Kerry or merely criticize George W. Bush are going to hell, and that the U.S. is an explicitly Christian nation and the job of Christians is to bring Christian theological principles into government, and who bring in speakers who say the conflict in the Middle East is God's punishment on Jews for rejecting Jesus, and everyone can still think you're just a good church-going Christian, but if you're black and friends with a black pastor who has noted (as have Colin Powell and the U.S. Department of Defense) that terrorist attacks are often the result of U.S. foreign policy and who talks about the history of racism and its effect on black people, you're an extremist who probably hates America. White privilege is not knowing what the Bush Doctrine is when asked by a reporter, and then people get angry at the reporter for asking you such a "trick question," while being black and merely refusing to give one-word answers to the queries of Bill O'Reilly means you're dodging the question, or trying to seem overly intellectual and nuanced. White privilege is being able to claim your experience as a POW has anything at all to do with your fitness for president, while being black and experiencing racism is, as Sarah Palin has referred to it a "light" burden. And finally, white privilege is the only thing that could possibly allow someone to become president when he has voted with George W. Bush 90 percent of the time, even as unemployment is skyrocketing, people are losing their homes, inflation is rising, and the U.S. is increasingly isolated from world opinion, just because white voters aren't sure about that whole "change" thing. Ya know, it's just too vague and ill-defined, unlike, say, four more years of the same, which is very concrete and certain. White privilege is, in short, the problem. Tim Wise is the author of White Like Me (Soft Skull, 2005, revised 2008), and of Speaking Treason Fluently, publishing this month, also by Soft Skull. Grate News!
Glad to hear the band is going to play together again. Doubt I'll be able to make the show but "you can never tell..." I'm stoked they're going to jam again! As far as all the other talk here, I've said it before and I'll say it one more time. I'm a republican but I'm voting for Obama, not because I believe everything he says but because we HAVE TO GET THE GOP OUT OF THE WHITE HOUSE. Once he's in office, I'll tear him apart whenever he deserves the criticism. Just like all the other politicians, he'll work for us... not the other way around. Also, remember in a year's time, much of the arguments we're all making on this subject may be moot, in one way or other, so in the grand and Grateful scheme of things, we're more important to each other than much of the hub-bub that is politics. I can relate because I get caught up in emotions of debates myself but rarely have I felt it worth the price I've sometimes paid, even when I'm the victor. Sometimes with these points we all try to make, it's best to be wrong and happy, ultimately. "The need for mystery is greater than the need for an answer." - Ken Kesey

I'm thinking a good pre-show warmup could happen at Zeno's. Anyone else in? I saw that Otto's was mentioned earlier. They definitely have the best brew in town, but they aren't within walking distance to the BJC. So, Zeno's it is. My wife and I will try to get there around 2ish if anyone else wants to join us! Let me know! Whooooohoooooooo! Walk into splintered sunlight Inch your way through dead dreams to another land

Why is it we keep getting left out up here in the pacific northwest, no tours by any of the boy's bands and no special events. There are more deadheads up here than in Penn. 411 shows and counting. One day I'll actually get around to listing them all.

I actually managed to get hotel rooms above Zenos in that little hotel they have up there for this show. I imagine I will be spending a lot of time there. See you at the bar! Thirty eight years a fan, over five hundred shows. A benefit for a presidential candidate?Very disappointing. Stop the bus, I'll get off here. p.s. Check Obamas relationship with Zbigniew Brzezinski.

My only beef originally was the use if the moniker "Deadheads for Obama" and using the good name of the Dead for selling a politician. I did not like it because deadheads are a wide breadth of people not limited to a political, religious or otherwise type of belief. A Grateful Dead concert was always a welcoming place where you could leave all the world's baggage at the door, put differences aside and enjoy a collective mind blowing. A place where an Ann Coulter can shake hands with a Michael Moore and enjoy a show together despite differences. The shows and music were music for music's sake, who ever enjoys it, enjoys it. So the point is this, you don't have to agree on politics or anything, to like and enjoy another person's company. Let us respect one another and just be nice. I would like to see a new topic or thread created where we can all air out these political issues in a civil fashion. We can learn from each other's differences, rather than the "I am right you are wrong" venom. I'd like to thank the fellow's for removing the Dead and deadhead name from this event. This shows that they do respect ALL deadheads from all walks of life. And they are still able to express there opinions which they are certainly entitled to do. God Bless and peace to you all!

This will be a sad day for me knowing the boys will be playing just down the road from me and there is no way Icould even think about attending!!! I would have loved to take a 3 hour drive and see the boys play together again...but not if my money is generating funds to support Socialists like Oboma! If you look into his ideas and compare them to what true socialism is we are flirting with a major change that is for sure. Why do you think he is promoting change??? All Ican so is if he is elected president and in 4 years of seeign the direction he mislead you all down I hope you can learn from your mistakes.

taking place on the stock market and with banking industry? And the fact that 'socialization of risk' strategy is promoted by this current administration and is additionally currently supported by the McCain campaign. Interestingly, our political system to this point has been following a strategy of 'reverse socialism' ie. instead of government owning/controlling the big business/major corporations (socialism), the major corportations/businesses have been controlling our government (reverse socialism). This has NOT a right or left concept. That is the way the USA has been operating for quite some time under both parties. Are you still against this practice when the White House and congress is controlled by the Republicans or only when the Democrats are in control? The idea of Obama bringing socialism to the table is redundant. He can't bring something that is already there. Socialism (and reverse socialism) have long been a part of the political landscape and a controlling factor in the operation of our American government. It just comes down to who you want right now running the big show a this critical point in time.

there are a couple likely topics already in existence for the kind of discussion you suggest--try the Campaign 2008-Who Do You Like? topic, or the Channel 666--Current Events topic for starters. If that doesn't work we can probably try something else...

Is anybody else having trouble printing their tickets? I know a few other people, and they say the same thing has hapened.

Hey Y'all! Wondering if anyone else noticed the strange way they did the tickets for this and if you have any insight into more details. I was standing by on my computer right as these went on sale and was able to log on and get 2 tickets pretty quickly. AND, it seemed pretty clear that they only released "200" level tickets to the general public accessing tickets the way I did - through the internet. So, it had me wonder, where were all of those other thousands of seats being sold to? I can not imagine that they held ALL of the "100" level and floor seats for the students. I am wondering if there is some strategic plan of releasing and even holding tickets that no one knows about that will only come to light as time progresses? Maybe they will release a bunch of them the day of the show to ensure there is no hassle with people coming without tickets as has always been the case at shows. Would love to hear your input on this! DID ANYONE OUT THERE GET A 100 LEVEL OR GA FLOOR TICKET? IN WHAT WAY TO YOU GET IT? Thanks! Brother "A"

Here's to hoping for a tour after this fiasco is over! The band did something to us deadheads in one incredible decision that hasn't ever happened - divided us. That stinks! Also, while I'm at it - some of the posts about Mcain are in incredible bad taste. All I can say to all you Obama supporters is, I can't wait for you all to feel his "trickle down no tax increase" when you buy gas, food, clothes and just about anything else. He won't raise taxes alright. Checks for 95% of the American people which we can't afford and at the same time raise taxes on all business. Oh for sure that will work! That sounds like LaLa Land policy to me. If we try hard enough we could turn the whole United States into California.

Disgusted, actually, at the hatred, venom and outright bigotry, yes, bigotry spewed at Republicans and by inference, conservatives on this thread. It is childish and sophomoric, and only paints all those oh-so-"progressive" Dead Heads as the haters they are. It just so happens that I know many Republican and even conservative Dead Heads, most of whom have been on the bus a lot longer than many of you. I am a conservative. No, I'm not a Republican, because I live in Canada, and I'm a Canadian. I've been "on the bus" since 1967. I have always kept my politics to myself, or have been circumspect about it, so as not to ruffle feathers, influence opinions, or "prejudice" any points of view. It worked, as I have had many wonderful conversations and discussions with counless Dead.net members. I swallowed a lot of odd and opposing opinions to mine for the sake of Dead Head solidarity. I knew who and what I was dealing with. But to see it so openly displayed here is disappointing, depressing and sad. Too many smug and arrogant people here, who ought to look in the mirror once in a while and see a rather ugly reflection, IMHO.

nay, promoted by BOTH the parties and even more so by the partisain press (right as well as left). And the zealots who cannot tolerate plurality, they just want to live in an echo chamber. As long as they can work to polarize us and make each person think that the worth of another is low, that decisions from the other side are monolithic, and poorly thought out, and then promote that we should lobby relentlessly and brutally against the other entity, we will all continue to experience the decline of civility and the culture that we are currently involved in. And this toxic approach to others and promotion of conflict over resolution is the life-blood of many of the strident voices that call out how terrible the 'other side' is and how one must be in lockstep with their chosen party/group. This is a significant problem diplayed by the left AND the right, the liberals AND conservatives, the Democrats AND the Repbulicans. NEITHER side can hold themselves as patriots when each are willing to attack and savage the other side INSTEAD of work for the common good of this country. Both sides are up to their necks in this morass, and neither have remotely clean hands. But I say work for change! And I support the band members being able to come together to 'rock for change'. And I would agree with it even if their support was for McCain instead of Obama (and that doesn't mean it would sway me politically either.) Artists do NOT reliquish their right to have an opinion in order to pacify their fans. (At least these guys don't. See the open letter they wrote to us fans after some fans intolerable behaviors at several shows.) I don't just like the Dead, or my friends, or my family ONLY when they agree with me. I can have appreciation for those who think different than I do. In fact they usually (when I can shut my mouth and listen) tell me some thing that I don't know already. I have not liked decisions or behaviors taken by all of the above groups/individuals but that doesn't make me right or better than the another person. It means I have a different view. The Grateful Dead would have never happened without tolerance, nay the ENCOURAGEMENT of differing views, styles, concepts, thoughts, talent levels, risk, exploration, etc, etc, etc. The quest and bravery it took to push boundaries. People can keep punching at others on this site, if that is what you want, (you must be getting something out of it). Some people aren't happy unless they are railing about how unhappy they are. Myself, I am tickled that the boys are back together, happy that some will get to take in a show, and have some regret at the tone of some that cannot tolerate people with other opinoins, and choose to exercise their venon with personal attacks and demeaning jabs. And I need to constantly challenge myself for my own role in this devisive mindset. Anyway, that is my 2 cents worth.

As I was reading some of the prior posts, I was again struck by either the polarization or the non- involvment in many of the views expressed, rarely any kind of whole encompassing look at the many different colors of this tye dye nation. One of the greatest things about life is the colors, more than one can count. As so elouquintly stated in the post by oroboros, we need to come together for the common good of all of us. Take those colors and weave a multicolored blanket of hope, not single color flags of separation.peace, unity, hope, and change. pk

Exactly. The music the people and the vibe will be great. Why for such a crappy canidate. I wish people would just read and research instead of believing what is said. If Obama makes it, the change will not be good. It is amazing Obama is going to fix everything you ever wanted fixed and some of you buy it. SO SAD.Enjoy the show. I would love to see the boys but I finally realized there is one thing that can keep me away from them....politics and a guy named HUSSAIN OBAMA. I hope he gives you a degree, car, house, money and anything else you would like to hear.

Amazing that you can go from wanting to hug one of the boys to wanting to ask them what the hell they are thinking and them punching one of them in the nose.

Its columbus day so what would a show be without Lost Sailor and Saint. Come on the whole reason we live here is cause this guy took a wrong turn! Ha. Lets remember this event is a rock for change...change is difficult to accept so why stick to all our old notions of the Dead if they wanna do this its their lives. 'nuff said... Heres my call for the setlist. The slipknot just ties it all together!! Music Never Stopped Bertha Mississippi Half Step Loser Deal Dear Prudence Playing in the Band> Turn on your Lovelight Althea Help on the Way> Lost Sailor> Slipknot> Saint of Circumstance> Franklin's Tower DARK STAR St. Stephen> The Eleven (with full lyrics) Box Of Rain U.S. Blues

it is amazing that it's bringing so much controversy. Obama may not be able to fix it all, but I think he'll try. McCain will just be Bush's successor-out for the extremely rich & wealthy-not for the people in any way shape or form. Someone who doesn't even know how many houses he or his wife has is completely out of touch. Obama is a Christian & half white also..........."think for yourself" as the Beatles wrote......peace & love Gypsy Cowgirltry & have a good time @ the show! whatever, people.................

this is bull. what a crappy way to reunite for fans. the dead have been politicized and it's freaking allot of people out -including me. jerry was morally and intellectually superior to politicians of any variety. he stood for creativity and elevating consciousness. i doubt very highly he would have approved of this nonsense. but then again it's a free country and their choice. anyone else notice that hunter has been very quiet about all of this political commotion?

It is not constructive, nor "cool" , nor " healing" to talk about a persons name and think aha, this person is like this. It's ridiculous, asbsurd, but above all the ultimate in disrespect. Take a walk, get out in this wonderful world. talk to any one, everyone. Get to know why they are who they are. Life is very complex. You have to be willing to grow and learn to make it a better place. I think you will find you have more of the same ideals, dressed in a different colors. That's what colors our world. imagine a world of pure red, go ahead and tone your photos with that, or pure blue, or black,or white. Now tone down the contrast til it's all the same. I think we all prefer technicolor, high contrast. Some of us just don't know it yet. peace, and colors,pk

i for one, am tired of the way this election has divided us,,,,pls let the music win through..i have one question though, is it proper for a candidate to accept donations form foreign born nationals? i have read that hungarian born billionaire george soros has been backing sen. obama financially since his senate run. let it be known i dont trust either side in this election. i think its time we had choices other then the two blood sucking bloated political parties we deal with now. now i dont know if this is true or not...could be more media hype.
