    Broken Ribs
If you google Weir and Ribs, you get about 6 hits, but they're all based on the same TMZ website report. Some say a "recent fundraiser" was cancelled, some don't. Perhaps we can get an update from this site? Nothing on the Ratdog site either. What's up??? If true...Heal well, Bobby. Hang in there!

Foreign nationals are forbidden by FEC regulation from contributing to any candidate for federal office. It would have been cause for celebration if the boys had decided to get together for a show simply for the music. It is unfortunate that they have decided to be used by politricksters, and in my humble opinion taints this event considerably for all the reasons stated by both sides on this thread. I have worked in the political realm (both sides of the ideological spectrum) long enough to know that you can not believe what you read/see/hear in the media. Many here have fallen hook, line and sinker for the Obama story. It is not to be believed. Dig deeper, it is not pretty. Sorry. No one's noticed, but the band's all packed and gone. Was it ever here at all? "The need for mystery is greater than the need for an answer." - Ken Kesey

This is not about the "band". This about individual choice, Yes, that frightening thing called individual choice. Seem's some claim that is why they do or say what they do yet, when "members of a group of people formerly known as The Grateful Dead" do the same, jeepers, how dare they. This is starting to veer toward censorship, only, luckily, the folk's pushing this don't yet have that power.

I appreciate & agree with both of your posts. Neither party represents the people of this country. Both parties reflect what has happened on Wall street- greed. They only want what will perpetuate inertia & bring them more money, ie, taxes, book deals, gifts, retirement plan, medical insurance, etc. You get the picture. Everything is me, me, me. Unless something catastrophic happens I dont believe we will see significant movement to take care of us. I dont think Pink Floyd meant this kind of Us vs. Them.

from taking a walk. It didn't help. So I wanted to add a couple things to my prior post about my perceptions of the various 'points' being made about this show and the motivations behind them. First, I don't believe that anyone here can speak for Jerry with any authority and those who are trying to present such info either for or against this show, are being very presumptuous (IMO) as well as more than a little grandiose and somewhat narccasistic. When did you get so knowledgable on Garcia's mind? And maybe, just maybe, there are 4 guys (who did spend more time with Garcia than any of you) that have decided that THEY desire to play this show and proclaim "change rocks" and support Obama. That decision isn't within their wheelhouse according to whom? I get that you don't like it, but to attack the boys personally and comments like "want to punch" etc. or the constant impugning of their judgement/charactor because it doesn't comport with your political beliefs(or lack thereof). Amazing. And I don't agree either with the venom spewed at the conservatives/republicans. Just because someone thinks differently than me doesn't entitle me to abuse them. I have learned something with all this. That some people on both the right and the left are intolerant of other's views and have learned at the feet of the current politicians/media to verbally attack, harrangue, threaten, smear, and abuse in order to make yourselves feel better. The aninimity of the computer seem to embolden your harsh and severe retorts. Or is that what you are trying to engage others in? Your own little 'hatefest' where you can justify being brutal to someone? And present yourself as superior? What then? Your positions and beliefs must be very shakey indeed if you are unable to articultate them without attack, innuendo, and the rest of what I have seen that is masqarading as argument in this thread. And that goes for the pro as well as the con on the upcoming show. To fling your personal view as if it were gospel truth is at best unfortunate. Everyone is entitled to their own opinion, but everyone is not entitiled to their own facts. Many are presenting their opinions as fact, which is unconvincing at any level. If you can't tell the difference between the two, that is sad. If you can tell the difference and you are attempting to bully others to accept your view, that is tragic. For you. And probably unfortunate for us as well. Just my opinion. Not a fact. Addendum- Several years ago the band wrote a letter to misbehaving & entitled fans stating (in part): "Want to end the touring life of the Grateful Dead? Allow bottle-throwing gate crashers to keep on thinking they're cool anarchists instead of the creeps they are. ......................The spirit of the Grateful Dead is at stake and we'll do what we have to do to protect it. And when you hear somebody say "Fuck you, we'll do what we want," remember something: That applies to us too." I couln't have said it better myself. That was what I was trying to impart. We are all Dead Heads, no matter our politics. I am a consevative to my core. I did not come by my politics lightly nor capriciously; it came about after very serious consideration, and after many years. I started out as a liberal in the sixties, and remained so in the early seventies. Change came slowly and delberately for me. Today I interact with Dead Heads as a Dead Head, not as a conservative or a liberal, or anything other than a Dead Head. Politics has nothing to do with the Grateful Dead, and I keep it that way. In this way, I can keep a relationship with any Dead Head anywhere, and I have. Getting into politics just poisons the atmosphere, and sours the relationship. I simply accept my fellow Dead Heads for who they are irrespective of politics. This is what tolerance means.

There must be tens of millions of naturalised Americans who were born as citizens of other countries but are now Americans. As far as I know they are allowed to do all sorts of stuff, go to school, drive cars, play sports, do what they like with their money, even vote and hold public office but not be president. Georrge Soros is one. So is Arnie, Henry Kissinger, Madeleine Albright etc.

I think that anyone who has read the interviews Jerry gave in his last several years would agree that at the time of his death it would have been very unlikely that he would agree to play a benefit for a presidential nominee. That said, we'll never know how events during the bush administration would have affected his views. Still, I would be willing to guess that he would not publicly endorse a candidate for president. Jerry seemed to consciously avoid influencing his fans with his personal opinions (although he did agree to some rainforest benefits). But we'll never really know. The Grateful Dead has, in many ways, been the ultimate American band. They are as American as anything I can think of. Meanwhile, w's administration has been about as unamerican as anything I can think of. So I applaud the surviving members of the Grateful Dead for their choice. Obama was not my first choice (neither was H. Clinton). But I think we learned in 2000 that "voting for the lesser of two evils" is probably worth while.

well Johnman my post was a rather long winded way of saying yes he is a naturalised American! And yes I owe you a cookie. Soros is an influential man. On our honeymoon my wife and I hired a minivan and driver to take us through Eastern Kyrgyzstan so we could go trekking in the mountains on the Chinese border. The area was closed to foreigners at that time but as we passed though numerous military checkpoints our driver pointed to a photocopied piece of paper he had stuck to the windscreen that simply said 'George Soros Foundation'. We were let through without question every time! So I suppose I own him a cookie too.

you know, i was taught that if i really felt strongly about something, and -if i really felt that i was right-, that i should ALWAYS find a positive way to express it. like if you REALLY think you are right about something, you will go to the extra effort to express yourself in a positive, non-attacking way, so that others can hear and understand without feeling attacked. and i've learned that including personal attacks is the best way to turn your potential audience off. so, i question whether some of these posters really care so much about presenting their views in a thought- provoking way that others might be persuaded by. certainly hasn't persuaded this listener. and i want to give a great thankyou to those who have taken the time to express themselves in a thoughtful positive way, because your posts have brought light to my window of thought. you know, there is a LAW supporting love and positivity, no such LAW supporting hatred and negativiity, just like in music there is a LAW to harmony, but no LAW for disharmony. that's why music like Bach, Beethoven, etc, is eternal, and negative hate music falls by the wayside and is forgotten. same goes here. the venom and spewing, having no LAW to support it, will just fall on those who spew, and be quickly forgotten, while those who thoughtfully post their views in order to engage others in positive exchange, will stand and change thought for the better. so, i encourage everyone who is led to post here, to go the extra mile, and step it up, so that if you really feel that you are right, find a positive way to express your view. i for one will listen to you. and thankyou, oroboros, pk, ed, and others, there are plenty of you whose thoughtful posts have enlarged the space of my thought. i mean that sincerely. for the rest, your thoughtless words are destined for the junk heap of history. i am a conserv-iberal, or as we say in vermont, INDEPENDENT. and if you'd like to sway MY view , see above. my 2 cents, thanks for reading. f. i.

The choice between a 72 year old white guy with 7 mansions and 13 cars registered to his name and a much younger black guy with zero experience who was born in Indonesia, which actually voids him from being president to begin with, is a damn terrible one to have to make. Obamarama didn't even have the nuts to bring Hillary along for the ride, going with yet another dull white career politician in a suit. I am surprised that there aren't more of the feminist deadheads calling him out on this on here. And by the way, Jerry G. would never have wanted to raise money for this type of cause. He would have wanted to help feed people or buy land to turn into a preserve or a thousand other more worthy causes.

Just wanna say - how do all you people know what Jerry would have wanted? I mean, really, WWJD? Is that how ya wanna live your life? How about "What Can I Do"? And as for the guys deciding to do this benefit? Good for them!! If we ain't gonna stand behind change, what the hell were hippies, the 60s, and the entire counterculture, about in the first place? Supporting the status quo? Me thinks not. Politics can really suck, but sitting back and letting things go wrong is even more distasteful. Bravo to the boys in the band. I certainly as hell wouldn't give one penny to any political faction. The notion that this is going to be a big change is laughable at best. The entire system is broken and Obama is not the person who is going to fix it. In his own words, all he has ever run is this campaign he is now in. Again, the choice in this election is a terrible one. You want to make a change? Raise money and help the people who need it. The money raised from this concert will simply fund another negative ad of some sort, with the money going into one of the television network's pockets. You might as well give your money to Fat Rhino, someone making money off of the Dead's music.

"Somebody has to do something. It's just incredibly pathetic that it has to be us." This is what Jerry said when the boys stood up for global warming and I believe that his words stand true and strong in this situation also. I have no doubt that the situation, as it is today, would grab Jerry's attention and his support to those trying to fix this country and planet.... which BTW is NOT the republican's, terrorist's or the apathetic. To stand and do nothing....I do not think so.

I offer you this brief extract from the book Acid Dreams. By Martin A. Lee & Bruce Shlain 'As they disembarked from the bus with loudspeakers blasting rock and roll the pranksters were well aware that they looked to straight citizens like inhabitants of another planet. This was exactly what they intended. They were into ‘tootling the multitudes’, doing whatever was necessary to blow minds and keep folks off balance. “The purpose of psychedelics” said Kesey “is to learn the conditioned responses of people and then to prank them. That’s the only way to get people to ask questions, and until they ask questions they‘re going to remain conditioned robots’. During the 1964 presidential campaign the Pranksters drove into Phoenix decked out in American Flag Regalia waving old Glory and demonstrating with a huge placard that read ‘A vote for Barry Goldwater is a vote for fun’ (If you watch the Sunshine Daydream movie there is a brief clip of the pranksters painting this slogan on the side of the bus. It comes up during the China/Rider jam, that’s what spurred me to investigate furthur!) Well what is this but political action, albeit of a particularly ingenious and warped variety? It’s very different from playing a benefit for a party politician for sure, but if the purpose is to provoke people to ask questions then the posts on the forum (in all their diversity) are evidence that the boys have already succeeded!

Republicans ran the congress for 6 of bushs 8 years. And Bush has been an irrelivant pres. now for almost 3 of his last 4 years. Screw Republican bullshit, and start using common sence. Obama isnt gonna fix the world, but you gotta start somewhere. See ya at the big show.

I've been following elections since Raygun. Not just US elections either, being a bit of a political junkie. This is the first time I've seen the Dems resorting to such Rep. political attacks. Downright lying will not win the election. Not for the Dems. It's worked for the Reps. before but likely Dem voters react differently to such tactics and I believe it will backfire. There's a difference in standing up for yourself and lying. Whatever your party affiliation you should check the facts and where they emanate from. A lot of good folks have swallowed a lot of baloney. When u r tempted to throw a rude comment family, just remember, u might be wrong. Is it worth it? No one knows the future. We can only make educated guesses. Here's mine! :) No matter who wins it's going to be better than it has been! I'm not going to offer my political scientists analytical breakdown as to why. There are many factors. Both of these guys are very different from what we have had and both have the potential to do good. Obama isn't the second coming, and McCain isn't McSame. It should certainly be better but don't expect big changes. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ "Are you kind?"

I don't mean like the spangers in the lots either! My brother was in the Pentagon on 9/11, he was then shipped out to Afganastan for his 2 year reserve and finally retired after 22 years of service. As far as our government is concerned, they never except responsibility for anything they cause, or cause to happen. Soldiers that went to Desert Storm have contracted all different kinds of illinesses due to inhalation of chemicals from factories that we blew up. Our government denies all responsibility. My own brother loses his site from time to time, the government said it was not from the Gulf War, even though it came to pass right after his third trip there. Whoever wins this election, in my eyes really doesn't matter all that much. I say this because, after all the promises and rants about what they are going to do if elected, they have no power over what really goes on. The Senate and Congress end up with the final say, all the President can do is Veto away. This is a show for the people who want to see a great show and have a great time, in addition to helping a cause the different band members wish to stand behind. If you want to see a really great show, I say go no matter who wish to support. If you want to turn this into a total political issue, then maybe you should stay home. The Grateful Dead have always supported different foundation they stood behind and we all supported their choices. I personally think the Republicans have already shown enough of distruction to this country to be passed over on this election. I even bet that the people that were in Berkeley in the sixties cringed when Regan was elected President the first time. I feel he began the first war on hippies while Gov. of California, sending in the National Guard over the protest to keep Peoples Park for the peolple. I will not vote for either Obama or McCain. I feel it's time to go back to Abby Hoffman's idea of running a pig for the office! I feel no one person in any office can make the changes we need in this country! It must first start with the people, we all need to stop bickering and start helping one another to achieve a civil society where everone is welcome. Just like at the shows of old!!! I'm not saying open our boarders to everyone, that a whole different can of worms. We need to help fix the problems ourselves. So with all this nonsense being said, I believe Jerry would support change for the good of people everywhere. If that means to vote for Obama to you, do it if you feel this will start the healing process. Just stop trying to understand why all these band members want to support Obama, they all have their own reasons which are just that. THEIR OWN REASONS. Whatever you believe is what you believe, it will still be a show that will never be forgotten!!! I say enjoy it without bringing an arguement!!! To the one who mentioned Edward Abby, he was a great man who souly loved the earth and wilderness, I personally think "The Monkey Wrench Gang" should be a high school assignment in order to make people aware. I studied uder a very good friend of his Richard Shelton for two years, who hired Abby to teach non-fiction at the U of A. Wthout clean air and water we will not survive!!! Stay Green!!!

It is my understanding that the reason for the delay in tickets being released is that ticketmaster is cross referencing all ticket purchases to ensure that no one exceeded the 2 ticket limit that ticketmaster set for this sale. It is also my understanding that if you purchased 2 tickets.....then went back in and purchased more tickets with either the same credit card or e-mail address that you will not be eligible to receive any tickets......I considered going back in to purchase more after my 1st 2 with a different credit card but thought better of it. Hope too many of you weren't greedy, it may have cost you the chance to see the show. GOOD LUCK!!!!

I will not vote for either of these phonies. Barack Obama is the furthest thing from change. Corporate America controls America because of Joe Biden's loan sharking state of Delaware. Every corporation incorporates there bc the laws favor big business. Allow credit card companies to charge 25% and up, allow lawyers to write corporate contracts to protect the business, allow banks to pursue aggressive growth, but never favor the consumer. I would have to say Delaware is responsible for this country's economic collapse as much as anybody. And Barack the candidate of change, picks old timer Joe Biden. To prove my point, Biden's own son works as a lobbyist for the credit card companies. What change? Same old bs, and I am disappointed that more people don't see it. We need a 3rd party, vote for Cynthia McKinney, her views are more in line with what I would perceive as the deadhead perspective. All that said, if I can score a ticket, I'm going.

The Dead aren't political, but they were never conservatives either so it shouldn't come as a surprise the remaining members are supporting Obama in this time of critical need for our country. By the way, is it already sold out? I can't find a ticket anywhere.
