    Live Used vinyl I just grabbed. I used to have a copy of this album, disappeared under mysterious circumstances, which is to say, I have no recollection of where it went. It definitely was a part of my "keyboard rock" period.

    Coming off 8/14 & 15/71 - Berkeley Community Theatre that rip. There's a picture of Jerry playing a Strat in Deadbase IX with a caption that says "Berkeley Community Theatre 1971". I think they mean 1972 because surely Jerry's playin' somethin' Gibson at those shows. 8/16/80 Mississippi River Festival Set 1 8/16/51 Dizzy Gillespie 8/16/52 Geri Mulligan w/ Chet Baker 8/16/57 John Coltrane "Lush Life" 8/16/59 Teddy Edwards "Sunset Eyes" 8/16/60 Eric Dolphy "Out There" 8/16/61 R.R.Kirk "We Three Kings" 8/16/80 Mississippi River Festival Set 2 I was at this show and had the best time of any I'd attended - music was pretty good, too. I believe they atoned nicely for any missteps they may have had 11 years earlier.

    Between yesterday and today, I heard, and am listening to, a pair of incredible shows.Though not perfect regarding completeness/sound quality, 8/12/72's essence is not to be denied. When the good sound is there, it's fantastic- Jerry's guitar and voice in this show are what please me most about the man. We get a Stella in the 1st set and Black Peter with a perfect break in the second. And today's show - 8/13/75 - is simply unstoppable! Last year I and a buddy were on vacation in San Francisco and he decided one morning to score some Asian food. His restaurant of choice turned out to be right around the corner from the Great American Music Hall. As we walked west along O'Farrell St., it dawned on me this was the site of the famed "Spot Check"! After we got the food, we walked back to the GAMH and I tried to see about trying to see the interior of this hallowed space. Just then someone popped out the front door. I asked him if it'd be OK to snoop a bit and he said sure. I'll not get over how small it was relative to what I'd been listening to all these years! So as I listen to Sugaree, I stand upstairs in the back and imagine the band on stage with the crowd rapt and swaying as Jerry slays 'em in the vocal outro. Cheers!

I recently joined the Volcom Entertainment Vinyl Club, where, for $40 plus shipping and handling, you get an exclusive, limited edition 45 every few months. Well, this particular gem was mixed in with my recent sign-up goodies, and I was a tad skeptical of its potential. Needless to say, my skepticism was unnecessary. Their style is somewhere between '60s-era psychedelic and '70s-era thrash metal. Side A is pretty solid, but when you get to side B, watch out! The sonic assault of those three songs--"My Big Cups," "Love Hums," and "Edge of the Apocalypse (Forever)"--will not only knock your socks off, they'll require a change of underwear! For those of you with functioning turntables, get the 12". It comes with a download, and the record itself sounds FANTASTIC. I know, I listened to it (and may have slam-danced, as well) last night. You can also score the MP3s for less than $7 from your local digital retailer, but where's the fun in that?

    In what would be her final public live performance, Janis Joplin packed Cambridge’s Harvard Stadium to the brim and beyond for a show that goes down as one of Boston’s most famous live music moments.According to an article on Harvard.edu about one of the photographers at the show, only about 10,000 people were allowed inside the stadium but the crowd of people that gathered around the stadium to get a glimpse of the show reached as high as about 40,000. "Electric Music For The Mind And The Body" -Country Joe and the Fish.Another case of a band most famous for one of it's worst songs(?). I find "Feel Like I''m Fixin' to Die", an annoying, unlistenable song. But there is some really wonderful music on this album.... Happy Thanksgiving to Everyone.

I've had more fun discovering this band this year than any other recent discovery. I have enjoyed out "music" by Derek Bailey, Fred Frith, and Henry Kaiser for almost ten years, but had resisted the pull of prog and Canterbury. Big mistake. HC and its peer groups were great, committed and uncompromising artists. Jump through the window!

At the moment I'm listening to the jam out of Playing In The Band. I picked this up on sale in a record store for $15. It's KQED's production and is done pretty well. There are some really good shots of the band as a family up on that stage. There are the two drummers in the back, the trio of guitarists, Donna between Jerry & Bob and Keith on his Yamaha keyboards to the right. Everybody looks so dang young. Bobby with glasses. Keith always looks so freakin' into his own world. This show is very California mellow. You sit back and scratch your head going "Man, I sure remember the band a lot more rockin' than that..." But, that was the way it was in the West in general and California in particular. The floor isn't overcrowded with tightly packed people, the whole scene is very mellow, like eating a giant Quaalude. Anyhow, I'm sure glad I picked it up. This is my first listen to this show.

In face of the harshest darkness there is light. It is like watching something beautiful appear out of the most mournful space-jam the dead ever did. Sometimes it was The Wheel, Sometimes Gimme Some Lovin, Sometimes Truckin' or Uncle John's Band. You never knew. But out of the confused gyration of meandering space there was something to be joyful with. This year's vortex seems to be grinding non-stop, yet still a beautiful tune emerges as the days start to become longer. Celebrate life and light and let the darkness fade on it's own. Thrive this season! Everyone!

Kingswood Music Theatre, Maple Ontario: Listening to the recording one is not struck by any superlatives, yet there is s total above-average quality of playing and smoothness here that cannot be denied. The BIODTL>Dupree's>LL Rain> Might As Well really shows some sustain to end the first set... Scarlet>Fire does not slouch to opens the 2nd. But it is of course the New Orleans; Big Boss man>Aiko-Aiko encore trio that steals the show, followed by Wavy's remarks about these being the good ole' days at the end is what marks this as a watershed moment. My favorite for all of '84 (And applause for those polite Canadians)

Listening to 9/24/1993 Boston. Flew up from Nashville with three friends, where we met up with more friends and stayed at my sister's house for the weekend section of the Garden run. Fri 9/24, Sat 9/25 and Sun 9/26. I'm building up the energy preparing for the spectacular "Standing on the Moon" on Sunday. Sitting rear of stage at the old Boston Garden had great sound. Our mail order gave us one night on the floor and two side/back stage on Phil side. From the back, the stage was open and we great view (and sound like I said) of Billy and Mickey during show but especially during Drums when the vast array of percussion instruments were put to use. Really fun weekend. Sunday night was insane in so many ways. Those of us who were there in my circle of friends recently had an email chain reminiscing the details of that night. I just love how the Grateful Dead's music is so wonderfully preserved. Listening to shows I went to literally take me right back to the venue and the friends and extended Dead family I was with at the time. Sensory overload, I can see it, hear it and even smell, taste and feel it. He's Gone from 9/24 that is queued up right now is very spirited. Later today, surely I'll be on the archive dialing up past New Year's Eve shows; and/or see what XM23 has to offer.
