February 16th: A Dose Of The Dead @ The Capitol Theatre

THE CAPITOL THEATRE PRESENTS UNRELEASED 1971 GRATEFUL DEAD CONCERT IN ITS ENTIRETY FEB 16 WITH FULL LIGHT SHOW

“A DOSE OF THE DEAD: 1 LEGENDARY NIGHT AT THE CAPITOL THEATRE IN PORT CHESTER, NEW YORK” TO FEATURE ADDITIONAL UNRELEASED MUSIC CURATED BY ARCHIVIST DAVID LEMIEUX

If you missed the Grateful Dead in their heyday at the Capitol Theatre, where they performed 18 times in 1970-71 alone, The Cap is giving you another chance to experience an all-out Dead dance party. On Saturday Feb 16, the rock palace will present a complete, unreleased concert recorded live at the theatre in 1971, played in its entirety through the Cap’s state-of-the-art D&B sound system at full-concert-volume and accompanied by visual effects from the theatre’s concert lighting rig.

“It’s no secret that the Grateful Dead loved playing at the Capitol Theatre,” says the band’s archivist David Lemieux. “The show, from 2/24/71, the final Grateful Dead show at the Capitol, and the last show of a six night run, features many recently-debuted songs (“Bertha,” “Loser,” “Greatest Story Ever Told,” “Playing In The Band,” “Deal,” and “Bird Song”), as well as a Pigpen-centric batch of great music, including “I’m A King Bee,” “Good Lovin’,” and “Lovelight,” with these latter two clocking in at nearly 20 minutes each.”

The show was mixed from the original 16-track analog master tapes recorded at the Cap for the Skull & Roses album, although none of this show was included on the album. Following the concert, the theatre will play a greatest unreleased hits “mixtape” assembled by Lemieux, drawn directly from the vault’s master tapes and from a recently discovered batch of tapes from 1969-70.

Let it flow, greatly flow, wide and clear
    > P.S. Only $8-$10 to get in, are you kidding? I'd pay $8-10 for a live HQ audio stream.

    great place
I saw Phil and Friends there on the last fall tour-it is a wonderful place to see a show-the new owner put a lot of time, thought(and money) into the venue to bring it back and Port Chester is a cool town. They know how to run a Dead show there-no hassles-no sweat.

I hope someone that is able to go will be kind enough to give us a full report on the experience (and the contents of the mixtape played at the end)...P.S. Only $8-$10 to get in, are you kidding? I wonder if we'll see an 'AUD' of this...

If my memory serves me well tickets were 4.50 and 5.50 for the Capitol Theater back in 1970 and 71. The february 71 shows sold out in no time. When my buddies and I got to the Capitol that cold december morn (pre dawn) there were already 40 to 50 heads ahead in line. I read that Blair J.was there also that morning. My seat for 2/18/71 was fouth row in front of Jerry. By the way anyone remember that crazy guy in the third row that night who striped naked and got lewd. Jerry just kept playing and watched it go down and then the ushers picked him up pulled his skivies and pants back up and hauled him away. Crazy shit but it really happened. That aside, those shows may have been the best run I of GD I ever went to.I went all nights except one. I missed the bomb scare night when they emptied the theater out to the streets, combed the joint then let everyone back in. Oh well can't see it all. Wild and highly creative times. 70-72 my favorite eras. Have fun any of you going next week.

Could it be? Is this the teaser for a Capitol Center Box Set Later this year? Three from the Vault gave us 2-19-71 but a box set of the entire run would be sweet.

I just got tickets!! Looking forward to this. Hey does anyone know what the parking situation is by the Capitol? Are there parking garages, lots or street parking? Is it safe? Is parking convenient or not?

Hey, fellow freaks! Gary Lambert here, from the Grateful Dead Almanac and SiriusXM's GD Channel. I'm happy to say that the good folks at the Capitol (just about my favorite GD venue ever!) are letting me serve as MC at this event. As a veteran of 2/24/71 and many other great nights at the Cap in its original glory days, I'm make some brief (I promise!) introductory remarks, to give a bit of historical background on the Dead's brief but beautiful relationship with the venue. Hope to see a bunch of y'all there!

I was there last nite, and 2/24/71 sounded awesome over the Capitol P.A. system. First time I was ever at the venue, and you could almost feel the presense of the GD at its 1971 glory. You could also almost feel the presense of Jerry and Pigpen. The "Turn on Your Lovelight" was incredible, as well as the old arrangement of "Minglewood Blues" By the way the person at the soundboard skipped over "Me & My Uncle" which was the second song of the first set. It didn't seem as if anyone there really cared.

I was at this event last night.. definately a fun evening. The Capitol is as alive as I remembered it back in the 90's.. & the restaurants in the area make it a very nice spot for a pleasant night out. I definitely second the motion for a boxed set of Capitol Shows. If David (or anyone else ) is listening, even a remaster version of 2/24/71 mixed from the 16 track tapes would make a nice issue.
