Hi all, I enjoyed 's tip on using quotes. As a librarian, I've learned a lot about searching Google. And one thing I've done is to construct a custom search engine (This Old Engine) for Grateful Dead topics. It's located at http://arts.ucsc.edu/gdead/agdl/thisoldengine.html Always happy to add new sites for the engine to peruse... --David

Google searching (does anyone Yahoo search anymore?!) for Grateful Dead displays the following: "about 6,180,000" However, did you know that using quotes narrows down what you're really looking for? Case in point -- about 1,550,000 for "grateful dead". (Much easier to look through a million and a half web pages than 6 million, isn't it?!) Anyway, I only bring this up 'cause some people don't actually know that if you type in Jerry Garcia you might get TONS of sites that have absolutely NOTHING to do with Captain Trips. But if you use quotes, my friends, you will magically be given better results!! Have a Grateful Dead!

I just want to second nycityjeff's posting from September 24, 2008 - 11:21pmabout the Grateful Dead sims in Second Life. Dark Star is truly a wonderful place to visit and hang with fellow dead heads and make new friends. It is the best thing I have found on the net, next to this group and archive.org. You don't need to be a techie or gamer to enjoy this scene, and it doesn't have to cost anything but time. Imagine living on a 3D version of the Shakedown Street album cover. There are always new old things to see, many of them activating synapses that have been dormant for decades. And Dark Star, while the most developed, isn't the only GD sim there. You will also find Aoxomoxoa and Ripple. The Mars Hotel parking lot is my favorite spot to hang. And, if you do visit and happen to run into the lovely starling glitterbock, tell her that ew beck sent you and sends his regards. She is the creative force behind much of what you'll find in Dark Star, and is a very talented soul. You can also meet many other talented artists and musicians who often wander by.

Just thought I'd add us here. We're a group of photographers, writers and music heads who cover the live scene. You've seen our stuff on Ratdog.org, The Philzone, and lots of Dead related fan sites. We've got live concert shots over over 70 bands, with several thousand photos posted. Last year alone we shot about 20 RD and a good dozen PLAF shows. We've got shots up of the Greensboro opener. Hiya Everyone. I have been creating a statue with Stanley Mouse to add to the Jerry Memorial SIte in Fairfax California. The statue will be real cool. Cast in bronze with a life size guitar with Chrome Plated wings that light up like rainbows or fire. Go to www.JerryMemorial.com to see a animated simulation, rednering, artist conception of the statue. I just added the interactive Jerry Garden where you can mouseover flowers to see photos of flowers that are actually growing at the Current Jerry Memorial. Flowers like Scarlet Begonias, China Cat Sunflowers, Sugar Magnolias, Purple Sage, American Beauties. We are having an event / gathering / jam at the Current Jery Memorial site on Sat June 13th, 2009 during The Fairfax Festival Again www.JerryMemorial.com TELL A FRIEND PLEASE!!!! Peace, Jim Fox

I'd like to mention a blog I've been working on, called the Grateful Dead Guide, which is a series of (mostly long) articles about the early pre-'75 Dead.... There's different kinds of articles, analyzing songs or performances. For instance, in the last three articles: The Dead's 1966 Songs - a discussion of all the songs played in 1966. Early Thematic Jams - or, "Where Did I Hear That Before?" - a listing of the themed jams the Dead played in the early years (this one's been quite popular) December 1972 - a review of the shows played in Dec '72. Older articles include a breakdown of the 1975 Studio Rehearsals, listings of First Times Played and guest appearances, very long essays on the beginnings of Dark Star and the early acoustic sets, show reviews, song histories, and various topics, all packed with links so you can listen while you read. I can't post very frequently, but I think you'll find this is one of the most informative sites around. Take a look! http://deadessays.blogspot.com

I haven't updated this site in quite awhile. However, there are a number of archive items that some folks might be interested in - scans of Oregon Dead pictures & collectibles, newspaper clippings from way back when, etc. Some nostalgia in the sense that it's a holdover from the days of tape trading when we had to find trading partners through the ads in Golden Road and Relix. http://home.earthlink.net/~deadtraders

Just want to point out that we have a Grateful Dead News channel on Mattters. The full address is: http://grateful-dead.mattters.com/ This is our site. I've only been to a measly 9 shows or so [but I got plenty of olde bootleg LPs! Now you know how old I am :-)], but my wife/partner has been to several hundred - so hopefully we won't do anything too awfully stupid [I mean, more stupid than is normal fare for us, which, however, gives us really quite an amazing amount of lee way these days :-)]. If you feel motivated, stop by some time! Thanks, -Mike

Deadhook has been around since the end of February, 2002 and is perhaps the friendliest site I've been to on the Web. I joined in May of '02 and I've had a lot of fun trading music, swapping stories, meeting up with folks at concerts, and learning about my fellow posters over the past 7 years. Please, wander by when you have a few minutes. It's a very nice community of folks and I think you'll enjoy it! You can access "The Dead Zone", which is Deadhook's most active forum by going to the URL listed here: http://www.deadhookforums.com/forumdisplay.php?f=12 There are plenty of other forums to visit at Deadhook, like "Trees & Vines" and "Shakedown Street", where you can look for recordings of shows you need or gear you'd like to own. Or, hit the "Show Reviews" archive and read about concerts that you may not have know much about. The link for the reviews forum is here: http://www.deadhookforums.com/forumdisplay.php?f=14 There are plenty of other forums at Deadhook, so I'm sure you'll find something there that'll interest you. Hey kind folks! I wanted to let you all know about a new series you might want to check out. Each month, Deadvids.com hosts a series/show called My First Grateful Dead Show. I host the show and each month a member guest hosts with me and we listen to their very first Grateful Dead show that they attended, and I interview them with 20 questions. During the interview, others that are present can ask additional questions of the guest host. We've been doing this show since late July 2010, and it's been catching on as people get to understand what it's about. We've found it really interesting and inspiring to hear each person's unique journey into this community and how it has impacted their lives. The interview takes place in the Deadvids.com chat room and anyone can sit in, member or not. You don't need to be a member to log in as a guest for that evenings show. Since the series began in July, it's always been an American/US-based deadhead that is my guest host, but next month we will have our first "international" guest host - a deadhead from overseas. I can't tell you who, or what show (we try to keep those under wraps until show time), but I would like to invite all of you, US-based and those living outside the US, to please join us! FYI, our guest host will have to be up into the wee hours of their morning to do this show, so perhaps you guys overseas can make a party of it and get together and listen/participate in the discussion that evening, make an all-nighter of it... If you cannot make it, we post an archive on Deadvids.com of all the past shows so folks can see whose show it was and the link to archive.org for that show. You are all most welcome! Please stop by the Deadvids chat room to fully participate in the interview discussion. For more information, please check out info on the next show here: http://gdvodcast.ning.com/events/my-first-grateful-dead-show-5 And info on past show archives here: http://gdvodcast.ning.com/forum/topics/my-first-grateful-dead-show-1 Hope to see you all on November 17th! Tell your friends... ;)

Hi friends, Julian Jerman ( one of most impartial experts in contemporary music ) has published ( on its website jayinteractive.com ) the best Rock songs of all times in a list named "Classic-ALL-Ynspired" accessible from the link "Jay Radio player" in the main page. He selected there 10 songs for our Dead! His objectivity is exemplary considering that he admitted some sympathy for the Doors, Pink Floyd and Supertramp ( the songs included for these 3 bands are quantitatively lower than those of the Grateful Dead )

Heads might be interested in an online graphic novel called Chronicles of Akasha, which begins with Kesey and Cassady and the Merry Pranksters' bus ride across America in 1964. It's got a lot of other stuff as well, like time travel and alternate realities. The main heroes are a veteran of the MK-ULTRA experiments in Menlo Park and a Native American medicine man.

Check it out. Totally free with registration at our social-networking site dedicated to shifting consciousness...

Hey everybody, I started a blog a few months ago about the venues that the Grateful Dead had played over the years. I talk about venue, its relation to Grateful Dead touring history, and its current state of being (still there, demolished, converted, etc.). I visit the sites and take photos of the venues in their current state at that time. My first post is about Spectrum in Philadelphia, shot a few pics a few days before they began demolition. My latest post is about the Pauley Pavilion in LA. It would really add to the blog if folks would post their experiences/memories about these venues. Go to: www.grosvenorsquare.wordpress.com Hope to see you there! Thanks!!! : } Inspiration, move me brightly.

Hey everyone, I noticed that I'm not allowed to post threads. I'm not sure why. I'm hoping that I'll get a reply in this thread. Where could I find the database that has every possible thing made by the Dead, and of course that it is always updated? The site I use is deaddisc.com, but does anyone recommend using that site, or would you guys recommend using another database? Thank you if someone could reply!

that any such site exists. Nobody could possibly keep a comprehensive list of every Grateful Dead related item that had ever been created since the band began and since everyone was getting inspired every day. There is just no such thing. That said, some sites are better than others and folks may have recommendations.

marye, I was just reading over this, and what is your preference as in a reference site? I'm still looking at deaddisc.com. I am going by in your response of post #8 which you said it's a personal preference, so may you please tell me what your personal preference would be, but of course a site that does get updated?

I have had two problems with online Grateful Dead resources. 1.) The data is a mess, there are multiple names for the same song (i.e., IKYR vs. I Know You Rider vs. Rider). 2.) There was no way for people to mark which versions of a song are their favorite, then have those favorites aggregated to let other people see what the community thinks the best versions are. In fact, I see the "what's your favorite version of song-x?" question a lot. I tried to solve these problems by creating an open source project to solve the messy data problem. Then I built a website using that open source data to solve the "best version" problem. I'm hoping to get some community involvement and have people start marking songs as favorites. The site is www.shiningbest.com I'd love to know what you guys and gals think.
