    July 29 - August 4, 2013

Welcome back to the Tapers' Section, where this week we check out some Grateful Dead music from 1969, 1972 and 1984 as we roll into August, passing Jerry's birthday as we go.

Our first stop this week is on 7/3/69 in Colorado Springs, CO, where the Dead were playing as part of their summer run of shows. From this show we have Hard To Handle, He Was A Friend Of Mine, Lovelight, including one of the best versions of He Was A Friend Of Mine I've ever heard. Please note this was drawn from the cassette master, as there is no known reel of this performance.

From three years later, we have music from 9/15/72 at the Boston Music Hall, the first of two nights in Boston. From this mighty fine show, we have He's Gone, Me and My Uncle, Bird Song, Mexicali Blues, Ramble On Rose. These shows were originally scheduled to take place at SPAC in Saratoga Springs, NY, but the town decided against hosting two nights of the Grateful Dead, and it would be 11 years before the Dead debuted at SPAC.

Lastly this week, from 6/29/84 in Akron, OH, we have Scarlet Begonias>Touch Of Grey>//Dear Mr. Fantasy>Man Smart (Woman Smarter). This sequence of Scarlet>Touch would precede the more famous 7/13/84 version, which of course would then segue into Fire On The Mountain. There is a cassette cut at the start of Dear Mr. Fantasy, which debuted only two weeks earlier on 6/14/84 at Red Rocks.

Be sure to join us here next week. More tunes from the vault coming up.

Two shows before my first. For some reason, my computer still won't play these, or The Jam of the Week or the Listening Party for Dave's Picks Vol 7. I am able to listen to the streams from archive. The soundboard for my first show at Pine Knob 7/1/84 doesn't circulate, but exists in good quality according to Dave. If Dave decides to put it up on the Tapers Section, I still won't be able to hear it. :( I've updated the flash player on my computer, but still no luck.

He Was a Friend from 7/3/69...

...was played on 30 Days of Dead in 2011. It was also played on Taper's Section before 'complimentary' downloads were removed in 2007 (July 2, 2007 is the entry). Here's a link to the mp3. He Was A Friend of Mine, Colorado Springs, CO, Reed's Ranch - 07/03/1969 (Right Click and Save as)

Cue-up the pre-partyJerry's 71st Birthday, comes around! Nice thing about Jerry is that Jesus would call him Brother and Best Friend. Jesus and Jerry- Some of The Nicest People EVER! Just saying.... God is sure to love that about Jerry too! Jerry is PURE LOVE just like Jesus. That is the quality we are certain to never live without- THANK YOU TAPERS! I LOVE YOU ALL! ------------(-----@ http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GzigR99mcuw Arroooooooooooooooooooo

lots o' psychodrama, meltdowns, and auditory mishaps and there wasn't even any acid involved (that I know of). This '69 selection is just what the doctor ordered to straighten things out. Once again, thanks DL. :)

The Ramble On Rose INTO He's Gone is phenomenal. Things you can have if you want it more than once; ah repeat. And I think I want to do it again... then it will just happen, oh yeah. Times like this are when I like to say it more than once! Steal Your Face Right Off Your Head

they sound like a drunken giant trying to do morning calisthenics immediately after getting out of bed. Part of the GD's appeal to me is the sloppiness that comes along with the tightrope walking and running and jumping and leaping. :))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))

You have to be okay with this Friend of Mine being out of tune to nonetheless appreciate it maybe being a better or "best" version. I don't say this to criticize you, gerhard; but that's just a fact of the performance, as is the homeliness of Jerry's playing (typical of the year, & also of 1970, I think). Did they ever play this song with their instruments in tune? But - the singing's tenderly affecting, and gosh there are Dark Starry elements and moment in the middle.

Not just 1972, September 1972 an iconic month to start an epic season, that being Fall '72. Need I say more?
