Grateful Dead

I saw the film at the Rave Theater at the Howard Hughes Promenade in Los Angeles, and there were terrible sync issues. I was very disappointed. There was probably a 100ms delay between the front and rear speakers and it created a weird slapback echo in the room, totally out of sync with the movie. I had been looking forward to this for some time and it was almost unlistenable. I walked out during Birdsong to find a manager, but they did not fix it.

I am interested in hearing from the producers/directors of the film why there was approximately a 1/10 of a second sound lag between what we saw the band doing on stage either playing their guitars and singing and the actual sound from the theater's speakers. Lots of people have commented on that and am curious if this will be addressed in the liner notes or whatever in the DVD that many of us on this list will order. With all of that said, I got used to the time lag mentioned above about half way through the movie and just relaxed and enjoyed seeing the band play at a time in their artistic arc that, for many of us, was considered one of the many peaks of the GD's amazing career. Thanks to everyone who worked on getting this document of a band that we all love out there for all of us to enjoy. I felt sorry for all the people who were there and ended up with a honking sunburn! Ouch! At least the band was cooking while y'all were doing the same. (Smile) We are in the middle of Jerry Week - 8/1 thru 8/9 - aka "the Days Between"! I hope you can find a concert of the late great JG's music (or the many songs that he covered) in your area during the next several days. I think it's great that JG is being honored in so many ways each year. Long live his memory and his music.

First off Dschian this is. A MERRY PRANKSTER film. It's not GD movie. RHINO HAD nothing do with this. The Cheesy animation as u call them was all part of Pranksterism movie making. It's not a concert film per say like View from Vaults. It's a documentary on the whole benefit. As a result u really get a feel of whole crazy day. The Dead had nothing do with the film. So be Happy the film makers and Dead have got together to release this historical document on one of most trippy days ever. Not a thing should or could be changed

I noticed that itunes has a pre-order set up for the complete Veneta show... It only costs $19.99. It will be available for download on the release date in September. I love that they're offering downloadable versions of these releases. That way if you miss out on one that sells out faster than you expected, you can still enjoy the music. I missed out on Spring 1990 and am still kicking myself to this day. I refuse to pay the $400 or so that scalpers are charging on ebay.

All I can say is thank you thank you THANK YOU for taking your time with this release and putting it out in super-duper deluxe style! Veneta '72 is the first Dead boot I ever owned (on cassette, in college early '90s, ceremoniously bestowed by best friend)...and all these years later, I remain firmly in the "This Is Indeed The Greatest Show Ever Played" camp. So to have it finally, officially released, fashioned with such obvious care and love and pure coolness and technological wonderment, is a great gift to us all. In short: can't wait! Cheers!!!

...being how I've missed out on all road trips since 2011, being dirt poor, chances are slim at best I can get this one. Question...why only 12,000 copies being in print, why not more, way more!!! come on dead.net. you can do better than that! Come on now, make it way more available for the rest of us poor souls out there! Come on now, make Jerry proud, cuz in my estimation, he's ashamed of you right about now!

Down-Side (For Background Purposes): According to Dead.net’s records, I joined in 2007. I lost my primary hard drive years ago (my database/whatever-cortex) and couldn't log on for several years. I was only allowed to stalk others silently, which made me feel kinda creepy. My email was already in use (by me) so even Dr. Rhino couldn't help me resurrect myself. Several of his helpers were also unable to aid me although I jumped up and down and made a lot of loud noises. Logging back in became something of a hobby for me. Major League Up-Side (As of August, 2013): Part 1: I got home yesterday and read the email for the Summer Solstice Offering. Part 2: Immediately, a mysterious all-encompassing (Solstice-y) force much greater than myself took over my burned out brain and proceeded to guide me through a new search (after innumerable previous attempts over the last several years) and in under 5 minutes I was able to find my old login info. I logged in (what a climactic moment) and ordered the DVD version of the show. I believe that I had very little to do with my success. Sunshine Daydream MADE ME DO IT. Part 3: My son just came to visit and checked our mail on his way in. In his hand was Volume 7 of Dave’s Picks. I knew it was about due, but the timing was unreal. Can life (or the Dead) get any better? Within 24 hours: #1 - Sunshine Daydream offered up for sale #2 - Login worked for the 1st time in 4 years #3 - Dave’s Picks # 7 landed in my hand Can't all be natural occurrences!

The very mention of the term "Exclusive edition" immediately suggests or implies that there are/will be other, non-exclusive editions. The email that I received from dead.net announcing these releases stated very clearly that the 40-page book and the tie-dyed slipcase comprised the "exclusive" part of the CD/Blu-ray and CD/DVD releases. It also seems reasonable that dead.net would only sell their exclusive editions, just as they did with the Warner Bros. studio albums box set. The 4LP version of this is not listed as being exclusive and it is indeed already to be found on the sites of other online retailers. As far as I know, a "standard" CD/Blu-ray or CD/DVD release (without book and slipcase) has not appeared anywhere else yet - although possibly Amazon and others jumped the gun on this a week or so ago - but I guess that will just be a matter of time. Please don't get the idea that I know any more than you - I am just putting 2 and 2 together and hopefully coming up with a 4! Keep your eyes open and keep Googling and who knows what you might find. Me? I ordered the "Exclusive edition" CD/Blu-ray variant.

I agree KJohnDuff1. The fact that people are raking it in on eBay for the Spring 1990 is hard to swallow. Hopefully, the powers that be in the will put the Spring 1990 set out in a downloadable format so it's available to the fans that missed out. The materials in the box set should be exclusive but the music shouldn't be kept from the people that want to hear it.

I agree with you on that, how does Real Gone get away with Doubling Show prices, it is same discs, but it is crazy. I think the Dead need to make some of these releases a bit more affordable. Veneta is the Dead at their Best, but I'm not paying 50 dollars for a DVD and 3 CDS, better than real gone would do. The Dead are releasing more music than ever. And now there is Furthur, they are good. I was real fortunate that someone bought me May,77, 77 is my favorite year, and I can't afford it, I'm on disability, it meant so much to me that someone bought it for me, and it was all great quality.

At my theater I too noticed sync errors, but I thought that the sync problem came and went at various points -- it wasn't consistently off the whole time -- sometimes there was no time error at all. Probably because the video and audio sources don't have a common time base, that makes getting the sync "just exactly perfect" throughout damn near impossible. I thought it was pretty good work just the way it was presented in my theater. The sound mix was super, most especially the drums. It's too bad there was so little footage of Keith -- when he first noticeably appeared there was cheering from the audience! I rather dug the animation segments, which appeared and disappeared seemingly at random -- I assumed they were there primarily to cover for problems with bad or missing footage segments -- I liked that they weren't based on cheesy video effects like we saw in some of the From The Vault shows, but instead apparently using hand-manipulated clip-art cut-outs, stop-motion style -- it reminded me of the stuff done by Terry Gilliam for the old Monty Pythons, fun stuff!

Those were part of the other products ie. the DVD of the Dead Movie and other visual projects. That does not detract from the 'documentary' aspects of this it only enhances the enjoyment of being able to see the complete China Cat > I know you rider or any of the other songs that may be included. An inclusive package, especially for the price would be wonderful IMHO. It is sad when 'tape' or 'film' is left on the cutting room floor (again in my humble opinion). One need look no further (pun unintended) than the circulating Copenhagen '72 video (TV). Even my degraded copy is a document of unbridled delight, but what an exceptional treat it would be to have the second set released. The first set (complete with hilarious Big Boss Man ala bolo)is wonderful. But take a look at what is contained in the second set that resides in the Copenhagen TV video vault. Mercy, to have that available would stoke us all. I will speak only for myself that I appreciate when an effort like this is undertaken (Veneta) and I laud those who are willing to place us in a position to view the available images from that place and time. Yes, I will even take the Gilliam collage visuals if the video is degraded/unavailable. But I do implore those listening (PTB?) to work to include those band visuals when at all possible/available. And I am fine with that being with those optional 'extras' at the end of the DVD( ie. Festival Express, or NYE '78 alt shots, etc.) Those viewing choices only enhance and do not detract from my experience. And candidly the extra 95 minutes of the Dead (outtakes) from The Grateful Dead Movie (circa '74)which includes Uncle John's Band, Sugaree, The Other One > spanish Jam > mind left body jam > the Other One, Scarlet Begonias, China Cat Sunflower > I Know you Rider, Dark Star Weather Report Suite have been repeated viewing for myself when I ache for a taste of the Dead. Seeing the Dead on stage & playing like that hits me where I live. My 2 cents worth. We will have to wait and see. The truth is realized in an instant, the act is practiced step by step.

I tossing a coin about whether or not to see SSDD on the big screen since I'd seen it so many times over the years and recently had gotten a pretty clean one. (That's before I knew that they had added footage to the 'final' one with additional songs. I think had they put that in the advertising, it would've attracted even more folks). Finally decided to go, but when I tried to see it here in Seattle, it was sold out- went home, then decided to jam to another theater a bit North. Consequently I missed all the pre-show material and only came in about the time when it shows them building the stage, etc. Quality and sound was great- but it was when the newly added "Bird Song" appeared that I nearly fell out of my seat! A long time fav song and to see it as part of the show was fantastic. Same later for "Sing Me Back". I don't particularly like the minor reshuffle they did of the Further clips in "China Cat"- I liked it better in previous version where the Neil footage kicked in right around when they first sang "I Know You Rider"- but a minor quibble. Am so jazzed about being able to buy one! Now they just need to get that "TV from Tivoli" release out (and maybe Calibration 1970)- but you can see pretty good quality versions on YouTube.

Saw the show in downtown Sacramento and the sound and sync was (in my estimation) pretty spectacular. Good vibes and we were blown apart by the end. Question for the forum, at one point in the show they cut to PITB just before the transition back into the main progression out of the jam....we hear a few bars of the familiar refrain and then we cut away again. Seems obvious but was that PITB the one from that concert? When I listen to it on the archive it doesn't sound the same before the transition. Maybe I'm just suffering from altered states misrememberization. Thanks all! Druid

also, how can you not love the smiling manatee that shows up early on in the animation? strangely, I recall a version of the animation where a guy is flying around on a sled or something. I am pretty sure he was in there somewhere. but to quote a soul from long ago, "who cares"? The music comes through loud and clear, and that is all that I care about, ultimately. Dark Star!!!

I saw it there as well, and was very disappointed. I was pissed I didn't tell a manager, but it seems it wouldn't have made a difference. Yes, the delay was painful--nothing like hearing Phil and Billy completely off for the entire movie!

Now that this is being released and it is common knowledge that 5/8/77 Barton Hall is not in the vault, what is the next most highly rated Dead show that has not yet seen the light of day on an official release (and is in the vault in full)?I am aware that plenty of you are walking databases of Dead performances. Unfortunately I am not which is why I ask.

I'm leaning toward Boston Garden ''91, either a box set or if a single show release 6/22/91 Chicago, IL. Dave mentioned this show in his very first online chat. It's a hot show.The only reason I'm leaning this way is because ever since the advent of official releases started in 1991 only one show has been released from 1991 (Dick's Picks 17, 9/25/91). So we're due for a show from this underrated year.

I'd second the Soldier show. Another one that's great from '91 is the second night at Sandstone 6-25. With the Sandstone show, you can hear them tuning up for Reuben and Cherise before Tennessee Jed. Alas, they didn't play it and never would again...

I know that it's hard to get a release from a guest musician but...3/29/90 - Nassau Coliseum with Branford Marsalis would be awesome. I consider that a legendary concert.

Veneta is a tough act to follow. I'd say the only unreleased shows of similar buzz are probably the Watkins jam and 3/29/90. Other than that, I think this is what's famous that hasn't been released or where we only have snippets released as far as I know: 9/19/70 8/6/71 6/10/73 8/6/74 2/26/77 7/8/78 7/13/84 6/30/85 9/18/87 These shows probably could have had a full release but won't since the best parts were released in compilation: 2/13/70 6/18/74 9/20/90 And for good measure, these would make me happy, too, but I do not think they're as famous. 10/12/68 9/20/70 2/18/71 7/19/74 or 6/23/74 9/6/80 10/10/82 Alpine run 89

Brian20051 - I'm on the same page on many of the dates you posted, but I keep thinking box, box, box!!! You might think it sacrelidge, but I would have love to see the Field Trip as the last show in a box of the week. San Jose and the Berkeleys are all fine shows - what's to become of them? (cue the violins) I'd add 11/11/67 as a mind-blower early one.

Regarding 10/12/68 mentioned below, that would make the ultimate bonus disc: right around 80 minutes of pure bliss mixed with a little mayhem at the Avalon. Primal Dead at its finest.

The love for 1979 is encouraging; after 7 straight releases from the Apex years, it's probably too much to ask for...however, for those NOT in the know, RT 1:1 and 3:1 are still available for the best 20 bucks you'll spend anytime soon! Incidentally, the latter is a beautiful companion to DP 5 a few nights earlier - I'll play them in succession every 3-4 months or so/Katie P.S.: I'll prolly have to go a la carte this coming year - but thanks for a great ride DaL, the boxes and subscription picks that bear your input are in constant integrated rotation with the rest of my GD catalogue (and I own everything commercially released). GDP and Rhino have set the gold standard for live archived releases!

One moment I clicked on the individual listings for the CD/blu-ray, CD/DVD and the vinyl editions and it said that they were unavailable to purchase, then a few minutes later it listed the prices again. For a moment there, I thought all three exclusive editions had sold out already.

An absolute gem of a show. The 2nd set is as good as it gets. Had the privilege of being there. Personal favorite among ~150 shows experienced live.
