    White Privilege
For those who still can't grasp the concept of white privilege, or who are constantly looking for some easy-to-understand examples of it, perhaps this list will help. White privilege is when you can get pregnant at seventeen like Bristol Palin and everyone is quick to insist that your life and that of your family is a personal matter, and that no one has a right to judge you or your parents, because "every family has challenges," even as black and Latino families with similar "challenges" are regularly typified as irresponsible, pathological and arbiters of social decay. White privilege is when you can call yourself a "fuckin' redneck," like Bristol Palin's boyfriend does, and talk about how if anyone messes with you, you'll "kick their fuckin' ass," and talk about how you like to "shoot shit" for fun, and still be viewed as a responsible, all-American boy (and a great son-in-law to be) rather than a thug. White privilege is when you can attend four different colleges in six years like Sarah Palin did (one of which you basically failed out of, then returned to after making up some coursework at a community college), and no one questions your intelligence or commitment to achievement, whereas a person of color who did this would be viewed as unfit for college, and probably someone who only got in in the first place because of affirmative action. White privilege is when you can claim that being mayor of a town smaller than most medium-sized colleges, and then Governor of a state with about the same number of people as the lower fifth of the island of Manhattan, makes you ready to potentially be president, and people don't all piss on themselves with laughter, while being a black U.S. Senator, two-term state Senator, and constitutional law scholar, means you're "untested." White privilege is being able to say that you support the words "under God" in the pledge of allegiance because "if it was good enough for the founding fathers, it's good enough for me," and not be immediately disqualified from holding office--since, after all, the pledge was written in the late 1800s and the "under God" part wasn't added until the 1950s--while believing that reading accused criminals and terrorists their rights (because, ya know, the Constitution, which you used to teach at a prestigious law school requires it), is a dangerous and silly idea only supported by mushy liberals. White privilege is being able to be a gun enthusiast and not make people immediately scared of you. White privilege is being able to have a husband who was a member of an extremist political party that wants your state to secede from the Union, and whose motto was "Alaska first," and no one questions your patriotism or that of your family, while if you're black and your spouse merely fails to come to a 9/11 memorial so she can be home with her kids on the first day of school, people immediately think she's being disrespectful. White privilege is being able to make fun of community organizers and the work they do--like, among other things, fight for the right of women to vote, or for civil rights, or the 8-hour workday, or an end to child labor--and people think you're being pithy and tough, but if you merely question the experience of a small town mayor and 18-month governor with no foreign policy expertise beyond a class she took in college--you're somehow being mean, or even sexist. White privilege is being able to convince white women who don't even agree with you on any substantive issue to vote for you and your running mate anyway, because all of a sudden your presence on the ticket has inspired confidence in these same white women, and made them give your party a "second look." White privilege is being able to fire people who didn't support your political campaigns and not be accused of abusing your power or being a typical politician who engages in favoritism, while being black and merely knowing some folks from the old-line political machines in Chicago means you must be corrupt. White privilege is being able to attend churches over the years whose pastors say that people who voted for John Kerry or merely criticize George W. Bush are going to hell, and that the U.S. is an explicitly Christian nation and the job of Christians is to bring Christian theological principles into government, and who bring in speakers who say the conflict in the Middle East is God's punishment on Jews for rejecting Jesus, and everyone can still think you're just a good church-going Christian, but if you're black and friends with a black pastor who has noted (as have Colin Powell and the U.S. Department of Defense) that terrorist attacks are often the result of U.S. foreign policy and who talks about the history of racism and its effect on black people, you're an extremist who probably hates America. White privilege is not knowing what the Bush Doctrine is when asked by a reporter, and then people get angry at the reporter for asking you such a "trick question," while being black and merely refusing to give one-word answers to the queries of Bill O'Reilly means you're dodging the question, or trying to seem overly intellectual and nuanced. White privilege is being able to claim your experience as a POW has anything at all to do with your fitness for president, while being black and experiencing racism is, as Sarah Palin has referred to it a "light" burden. And finally, white privilege is the only thing that could possibly allow someone to become president when he has voted with George W. Bush 90 percent of the time, even as unemployment is skyrocketing, people are losing their homes, inflation is rising, and the U.S. is increasingly isolated from world opinion, just because white voters aren't sure about that whole "change" thing. Ya know, it's just too vague and ill-defined, unlike, say, four more years of the same, which is very concrete and certain. White privilege is, in short, the problem. Grate News!
Glad to hear the band is going to play together again. Doubt I'll be able to make the show but "you can never tell..." I'm stoked they're going to jam again! As far as all the other talk here, I've said it before and I'll say it one more time. I'm a republican but I'm voting for Obama, not because I believe everything he says but because we HAVE TO GET THE GOP OUT OF THE WHITE HOUSE. Once he's in office, I'll tear him apart whenever he deserves the criticism. Just like all the other politicians, he'll work for us... not the other way around. Also, remember in a year's time, much of the arguments we're all making on this subject may be moot, in one way or other, so in the grand and Grateful scheme of things, we're more important to each other than much of the hub-bub that is politics. I can relate because I get caught up in emotions of debates myself but rarely have I felt it worth the price I've sometimes paid, even when I'm the victor. Sometimes with these points we all try to make, it's best to be wrong and happy, ultimately. "The need for mystery is greater than the need for an answer." - Ken Kesey

concept about 'reverse socialism". Your reading of my point is flawed or my writing wasn't clear. Your statement "One controlled by more government regulations or corporations becoming unelected civil servants who do what they think is in the best interest for society or what they consider stakeholders." couldn't be further from what my point was concerning what I perceive the corporations intent and practices are. They are NOT doing what they do for the "best interest for society or what they consider stakeholders". They are doing what is best for them. Whether is is line their pockets (see golden parachutes up the whazzu, do you really think that is for societal best interest or for the shareholders? Please!) pollute the environment, suppress inovation if it threatens their 'bottom line ie sales' or downright deception and predatory practices (see current lending practices that were deregulated). The point I was making about 'reverse socialism' is that they had usurped the intent of government to refocus on making a better enviroment for the corporations/businesses AT OUR EXPENSE. The deregulation of these businesses has been a boon for them and a bane for us. I won't go into all the services that are significantly more expensive and significantly worse product/service, but suffice it to say, it hasn't been in my best interest. But is has been in the businesses/corporation's best interest. My experience has been pay more and get much less service/product in return. There are a myriad of examples. I expect some level of protection, regulation, monitoring, and enforcement from a govenrment. But that doesn't happen when the government is controlled by the corporations/businesses. Instead they get carte blanche' and we get to pick up the pieces (and of course pay the tab).

hey everyone, saw santana last night and wow! he is greater and adventureous as ever. he rocked the place for almost three hours. the upcoming show with the dead/allmans, as we call it here, is a dream combination. the music should make all of us forget the national scene for a space of time. music is a deserved break from lifes heavy situations. lets not take politics personal, but respect each ones view. whether we like it or not someone thinks my opinions are wrong, thats cool. lets vote and hope for the best. meanwhile how about an awesome mountain jam this oct 13th. its time we all rock while we can and keep politics in their proper place. peace to the world.

Terrapin tommy, I sure hope not, that TMZ page is riddled with false information. Claims the dead was "touring" it also says it was the dead tourbus not a ratdog bus or anything. I alo doubt they would cancel the event, unfortunatly just have a P&F show instead with mikey and bill. ::hopes TMZ sucks and Bobby gets well soon::

If you google Weir and Ribs, you get about 6 hits, but they're all based on the same TMZ website report. Some say a "recent fundraiser" was cancelled, some don't. Perhaps we can get an update from this site? Nothing on the Ratdog site either. What's up??? If true...Heal well, Bobby. Hang in there!

I live about 40 minutes from State College and know a bunch of people who have attended concerts at the Bryce Jordan Center in the past. They all said that there is absolutely no tailgating of any kind allowed in the Bryce Jordan parking lot. However, the nearby beaver stadium lot does allow tailgating and apparently gets pretty wild with local police primarily concerned with traffic and keeping the rowdiness from spilling out into the street. Don't tell me this town ain't got no heart, just gotta poke around

I have always preferred my Dead served without the politics. But since the die has been cast…… I was born (long ago…) in Chicago, the most crooked city, in the most crooked county (Cook), in the most crooked state (IL) in America. Having had the opportunity to observe the Chicago machine in action and the meteoric rise of Barack Obama, I offer you all the perfect Dead lyric to describe what I see; You know better, but I know him. From what I can tell, ol' Barack is pretty swift w/ words. He sure can get a crowd goin'. Once he starts talking, it's like everyone listening gets all pumped up - wanting to be a better citizen and take this country in the right direction. I hear people using the word "volunteer" for things like "community service" and the ilk. Even IF all he is is talk (which I don't believe is the case), how bad of a thing is it to motivate people to do right by your fellow man and to try and change things all around you and your community for the better. Offering $4000 to college kids in exchange for community service. Offering Health Care to those in need - while NOT mandating it for others (read the plan, it is not national, government enforced Health Care like Hillary's plan was - Obama's plan says that if you work and/or HAVE existing coverage - NOTHING will change)...how bad is this stuff??? A lot of people putting this guy down for having good ideas and good motivational skills. I just don't get the argument. ~ Pappy www.theCAUSEjams.com "Once in a while you can get shown the light in the strangest of places, if you look at it right." - Robert Hunter

You have every right to be nervous - it's a big change. He comes across as VERY different than the typical politician, in my opinion - and furthermore, IMO, I believe he IS different. He's answered EVERY question that's been brought up - DIRECTLY - that would have negative impact on this country. Every one. And if you don't think McCain (let ALONE Hillary!) has had people scouring every square inch of his life to find dirt, you're kiddin' yourself. What makes me laugh are those people that are still professing his ties to Muslim radicals. Can those folks POSSILBY SERIOUSLY believe that someone could make it THIS FAR into the electoral process and have that be true??!!! I mean, there's no way that people aren't CONSTANTLY on his phone records, past and present, etc. He's CONSTANTLY under surveillance by the media and by the other campaign. Anyway, just thought I'd throw that out there. You sound like a pretty solid dude and (no offense) you look a little older than me (I'm 39 just to be fair!), so you've probably dealt with the experience of sleazy politicians longer than me. This man is different. I'll be in State College and I'll be casting my vote for Obama on the 4th...eventhough he probably doesn't even need it anymore in Pennsylvania, where he's currently holding OVER a 9 point lead....but I'll be proud to hit that lever in his favor. ~ Pappy "Once in a while you can get shown the light in the strangest of places, if you look at it right." - Robert Hunter

Did you know that: Barack Obama has multiple ties to those responsible for the present economic crisis?: Franklin Raines, the immediate past CEO of Fannie Mae who has collected a $90 million golden parachute while driving Fannie into the ground has advised Obama on housing issues. Jim Johnson, yet another former Fannie Mae CEO, resigned from Obamas vice presidential search team when it was revealed he had received a sweetheart home mortgage deal. Despite serving in the Senate for only four years, Obama himself has been the second-largest recipient of Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac largesse in the entire Congress, ahead even of former presidential candidate John Kerry, who's spent two decades in the Senate? Obamas long-time political ally, radical group ACORN, played a key role in pressuring banks to offer loans to those who were unlikely to be able to pay them back. ACORN has taken credit for pressuring banks to accept undocumented income as a basis for offering loans, for offering loans without using credit scores, and for making 100% financed loans available to low-income people.” There is more, of course. Do voters know: That, in apparent defiance of federal election law, the Obama campaign refuses to identify individual donors who have provided almost half the funds for his campaign, including obvious fakes like Mr. Good Will and Mr. Doodad Pro? And that 11,500 donations to his campaign totaling almost $34 million may have come from overseas? Or that two Palestinians living in a Hamas-controlled refugee camp spent $31,300 in Obamas online store? Who are all these people, and why wont the Obama campaign obey the law and identify them? That Jeremiah Wright wasnt Obamas first radical mentor? As a young man in Hawaii, Obama had a quasi-filial relationship with radical Frank Marshall Davis an avowed member of the Communist Party of the USA. In fact, in his memoirs, Obama concedes that he attended socialist conferences and encountered Marxist literature. (Now imagine the outcry if a Republican presidential candidate had such ties to a Nazi). That the People’s Weekly World the official newspaper of the Communist Party of the USA has rhapsodized about Obamas presidential campaign, calling it a “transformative candidacy that would advance progressive politics for the long term”? (Think about how the press would react if a fascist newspaper heaped such praise on McCain.) That Obama has routinely tried to intimidate his critics into silence? His political organization spearheaded a massive campaign against a Chicago radio show that invited one of his critics to appear even after being asked (and refusing) to send a representative to balance the program, hosted by a non-partisan University of Chicago psychology professor. Worse, his campaign sought to chill free speech by establishing a truth squad of Missouri prosecutors and sheriffs, which threatened a vigorous response to any ad presenting information about Obama that they deemed to be inaccurate. And there are other examples. That even as America struggles to bail out our own struggling economy, Obama backs a global bailout? His Global Poverty Initiative would assess $2500 per taxpayer, according to Investors Business Daily, to fund a global war on poverty administered by the UN and its agencies. That despite touting his academic credentials as a rationale for initiating a campaign for president just two years after leaving the Illinois state legislature, Obama refuses to release either his college or his law school transcripts just as he sought to keep records of his working relationship with former terrorist Bill Ayers on The Annenberg Challenge (a left-wing educational foundation) safely under wraps? What is it that he doesn't want voters to know?” As a follow-up to the above, ask yourself what is Obama hiding. Below is a list compiled by a fellow blogger that goes by the name of GForce over at NewsBusters.org…. 1. Occidental College records — Not released 2. Columbia College records — Not released 3. Columbia Thesis paper — ‘not available’ 4. Harvard College records — Not released 5. Selective Service Registration — Not released 6. Illinois State Senate schedule — ‘not available’ 7. Harvard Law Review articles published — None 11. University of Chicago scholarly articles — None 12. His Record of baptism– Not released or ‘not available’ 13. You can count on one thing - this is NOT the guy through whom you are going to get shown the light, no matter how right you look at it. pajak, obviously you have taken the time to investigate the matter, all i have to go by is a gut feeling. there are other issues that i'm not sure i'm willing to discuss here having to do with the bill of rights. now i know bush has pretty much shredded that document, but there are certain aspects of it that sen obama has stated many times in the past that he would change, you can guess which ones. unfortunately many of my fellow dead heads would tend to agree with him on these issues.......until it's too late....like i said, only time will tell. pappy thank you also for your input and i'll say again ...i dont have alot of faith in either side. while sen mccain has filled leadership positions while on active duty, i don't feel he is presidential material. this has been my monthly vent. i approve of listening to scarlet begonias and eating a cookie......right now!!

Looks like we are returning to the 1950's with the above post. What is next, a blacklist? Pajak, I call your bluff. You have been on this site for 2 weeks and 4 days and that whole time you have used this site to advance your political agenda, but you list nothing about yourself in your profile. What are you hiding? I know I am coming on harsh, but I have no time for red baiting bullshit. Because a person has met certain people does not make him one of them. The piece also ties him up with major capitalists. The logic is flawed. You are attacking him for being a corporate capitalist and a red in the same breath. Seems like your agenda is to attack and disrupt. You are posting someone else' words here instead of your own. Many of us here speak and think for ourselves, we don't need to blog someone else's stuff. Folks must be desperate and afraid that Obama is going to win to start posting such crap like the above which is full of innuendo. A simple dirty sleazy smear campaign. I am sure you would make Karl Rove proud. I am all for freedom of speech and political discussion but what you are doing is not discussion it is disruption. After 8 years of all of the smoke and mirrors, shuck, awe and jive, fear mongering, wanton spending, repeat of Nixon, Reagan, Bush I covert, guns over butter, war on "insert here...communists, drugs, Panama, terror etc...", I can't think of a majority of people outside the top 8-10% who are much better after COLA adjustments, inflation, stagnation, tax rebates x 2, surging, splurging and unconstitutional debauchery that has taken place on Pennsylvania Avenue. If your retirement portfolio just lost 1/3 of it's value in days and your house is worth less than you bargained for you'd want change too. I am from Alaska and would have appreciated (I have not met residential requirements) my Permanent Dividend fund of $2000 per person as well as the $1200 per person energy rebate that McCain's Gal Palin dished for us needy and cold Alaskan's. (Think 500,000 residents x $3200.00 = $1,600,000,000 pumped into the AK economy this year). This amount will not always be as high (the energy relief was supposedly a one shot deal and permanent funds fluctuate year to year). I asked my future sister in-law if she felt so liberal would she be willing to put her money where mouth was and give back her greasy money to the State? She sort of switched the subject and that ended tonight's political debate. Also note, Pennsylvania will be one of those key states this year. You might not like the dead politics or lack there of, but you can't fault them for trying to make a difference. Maybe their $50 per ticket x 15,000 can help steal the face of the election like in Florida 2000? I was listening to some of my dead collection today and I said to myself, man I wish I could see/hear some of this stuff live again. Even if the political affiliation is pro or con, it's a mutual and beneficial transaction agreed to by all parties. Politics has not always been about what's right or wrong, but what good can be done for the majority of constituents, the politicos benefactors and how to convince as many of those people as possible that your ticket is the right one. Maybe we can leave Jerry out of this discussion and let the man rest in peace?

Wow, maybe this is old news and maybe I'm just an old fart. I don't want to make sweeping generalizations or insult anyone, but the tone of posts about this show on this site is so much more reasonable, intellectual, and balanced. Man, that ratdog message board seems to be filled with angry, greedy, self-absorbed, and downright mean posts. Yes, we had some issues with ticketmaster, etc. But man, the posts on the other site come off as if everyone feels they're entitled to more than 2 tickets and that everyone is in this world just for themselves. I like it over here better. I posted there that I thought the 2 ticket limit was reasonable and that we're trying to share the vibe not hog the vibe. I was quickly called a dork and told to stfu. That's certainly not the deadhead spirit I've been experiencing in the last 25 years. What has happened? Am I alone? Am I missing something? Again, no offense meant here. I'm just shocked at the difference. I'm sticking to dead.net, where we can disagree without attacking each other. Quite an eye opener for me. Peace, aaron

FIRST - Aaron...thank you. I spent a bit of time recently over on RatDog.org - many, many selfish 'know-it-alls' who can't distinguish opinion from fact. This vibe over here is WAY better... SECOND - Pajak....other than BLOGGERS, do you have any FACTUAL evidence of what you spout? If so, post the link....not to a BLOG, but to an actual fact-based website. I'll be holding my breath. Barack Obama - ties to terrorists???? It's LAUGHABLE.... In case you didn't see this wonderful clip from Keith O : http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2008/10/06/olbermann-special-comment_n_13… Come off it, already. RDevil - don't believe every post you read. Blogging is what it is - a bunch of people who believe almost everything that comes into their 'inbox' and feel the need to comment on it, like it's fact. Obama's put out EVERYTHING he's been asked to put out. If there's ANYONE in this race hiding something, it's the young Governess of Alaska. Republicans hit an all-time low (with factual letter sent by RNC) :http://www.philly.com/philly/blogs/attytood/30547939.html And WHO'S hangin' around with the bad guys??? TODAY??? Google Robert Asher. Oh well....enough of the mudslinging - there's a debate on tonight and I'm psyched to watch it. Our favorite Band could have found with out a doubt many other causes for a benefit show. There are so MANY good ways to help People, organizations, and institutions who can better use the funds needed for humanity's sake. (Nature preservation, animal rights, the homeless , the poor, human rights, hurricane relief,Education, Breast Cancer, all types of Cancer, Organ Donation education, hunger,...too many more to mention) How many can you all think of? Politics isn't a good cause in my opinion. Dark Star Orchestra is doing the right thing, by humbly not leaning to the LEFT or the RIGHT sides of politics. I hope this will be a good lesson to be learned. just encourage folks to register and vote. See Previous post by Duncan65 you said it flawlessly! right on brother.

There is nothing funnier to me than the fact that "Duncan65" is a "plant" from the McCain/Palin campaign. This is precisely how pathetic they are. They are actually trolling the official Grateful Dead website for smear opportunities. I would be laughnig my head off if I wasn't so sad that I'll miss this show. dewahba - I agree that there are MANY causes out there. This one is as equally important, though - don't you think? We're talking about changing the direction of this country. The 2 candidates have VERY different ideas about which way we need to go. So, the boys feel this is the right one....I understand people will disagree, and that's their right. But this issue is important, I wouldn't diminish that fact. Also, DSO?!!! Really? No offense to those guys - they're wonderful musicians and do a great tribute to the GD...but they're a tribute band. Not that their opinion is worth less on a humanity-level, but jeeeeez....who cares what they think? If they came out in support of a candidate, it'd be like "oh lookie....a tribute band is supporting a candidate" and they'd pack a house of supporters about 1/2 the size of BJC. These 4 cats reuniting AND playing with ABB is a slightly bigger deal, IMO, than a touring tribute band. Anyone want to try and make our own after party at some bar or something? I went to Penn State, so I know the town inside and out, I'd be happy to help arrange and give suggestions if anyone else was interested in meeting up with others...

EmChild: Ticketmaster did not over sell the tickets. The problem is that many scalpers/ticket whores, are selling multiple copies of the same tickets. A similar thing got started 5 years ago with another band that use alot of PH's. You can print 100's of copies of an e-ticket. The first person who get to the gate will get in. Everyone else who has a copy will be shut out by the bar code scanner. What use to happen on the Ph-lot was that a 2 man team would make 10 or 20 copies of their tickets. Once the friend was inside made call to his partner, the other dude would cash or trade the bogus tickets. By the time the victim realized his tickets were bunk, the sellers would be in the show partying. DO NOT BUY E_TICKETS on the lot or from anywhere but ticketmaster. You are just gambling you cash and goodtimes.

...I wish they were using the name "Grateful Dead". Then I could use the joke: "Who is Obama and why is he following the Grateful Dead?" - ha! But alas, no dice. There the boys go again, ruining all my good material. On another note, my biggest hope is that the audience recording will circulate as quickly as the "Deadheads for Obama" recording. That was great that it made it around so quickly and in decent quality for audience recordings. Not to mention the outstanding closing of the Warfield shows. Heck, Phil even made the soundboard available for one of the nights. So, for those of you who, like me, won't be there, start scouring the net on 10/14 for audience recordings, heck, I will! And, if its cool with everyone else, I'll post a link here as a follow up. None of us should miss hearing this one, 'cause it just may be the last time, I don't know. | Wait until the veil is shredded, then reveal it |
