    September 16 - September 22, 2013
    Week of September 16-22, 2013

Welcome back to the Tapers' Section, where this week we'll check out tunes from 1973, 1981 and 1989.

In 1973, on Jerry's 31st birthday, on 8/1/73, the Grateful Dead played at Roosevelt Stadium in Jersey City, NJ, and considering the year, and the celebration, it was unsurprisingly a great show. From the show's big jam sequence we have a long stretch if Jerry-centric music, with a Bobby tune in the middle: Dark Star>El Paso>Eyes Of The World>Morning Dew.

From eight years later on 7/7/81 in kansas city, we have the end of the first set featuring five of my favorite first set tunes from that era: Lazy Lightning>Supplication, Bird Song>Looks Like Rain>Deal.

Lastly this week, from eight years later on 7/19/89, we have music recorded at the final Grateful Dead performance at Alpine Valley in East Troy, WI. The June, 1988 shows at Alpine were known as the dust bowl shows, whereas as these shows in 1989 were dubbed the mud bowl. Plenty of rain and mud in 1989. Much of the Summer Tour of 1989 was hit by rain, actually. I distinctly remember getting heavily rained upon at Buffalo, Giants Stadium, RFK Stadium, and these Alpine shows. From the last night in Alpine: The Other One>The Wheel>Morning Dew.

Be sure to stop by next week for more tunes from the vault.

    Jersey City 73
Hey!I was at the Jersey city shows , Watkins glen and RFK that summer of 73, and I did an audience recording of the Jersey city's two night. (Int he tape dust bin) But I actually have a photo from Jersey city of the stage from way back in the stands. I could scan that for you and send it. I took pics at Watkins glen too. I'd love to see your pics of Jersey city with the black bat tarp! My photo is dark and faded, but the stage is there in the distance, Steve htsspaul@comcast.net

Super long show almost 3 hours 30 minutes. Plus a dark star > eyes > playin to end the show. Johnny b. Goode encore very nice as well. what a combo. I have 3-26-73 courtesy of Jeebs. I do believe the 3-28 show is more enticing because of that combo

I'm still working my way through this Dark Star but I love how slow it is. I don't listen to 1973 much, and now I think I might be missing out!

yes you are, but hoo-ray, you have a second chance! :) and...might be the best Dark Star ever, very spacey, like a good tab of orange sunshine or window pane or what ever was available back then,

I was at this show MANY Moons ago...Still have the color photographs I took way back when, GREAT SHOW as I remember...Jersey City is ..well- A Dark, Congested, Dirty Metropolis...But The DEAD seemed to make all GOOD! (The Deadheads too!),it was a much different time back then, even for a ''Half-Breed'' Hippie as Myself, Sure the cops looked at us with scorn & the ''evil eye'', but this was Before the ''Patriot Act, NSA, FISA, PRISM, BUSH, OBUMMER & the rest of the Madness we have to deal with now--(O.K. NIXON was just as bad,) I must agree...but we we're FREE, THE SHOWS IN WASHINGTON, D.C.. WE'RE THAT SAME YEAR, (ON MY BIRTHDAY NO LESS)... & who could forget WATKINS GLENN!!!!!-with the ALLMAN BROS. & THE BAND?---Yes, those we're Magical times, I'm sure whoever else who was there agrees ...Hope the Spirit World is Good to you Jerry..."cause you we're sure good to Us.......AHO!

Yes - what a dump! But what shows! I was there in '73 and then '76 - both long and deep....and listening today to the '73 material - I've had on tape for years - however - ALWAYS blows me away - the dark start - especially Jerry's slide work after the verse combined w/ Phil's crazy bass complimenting is truly something special. And then the juxtaposition of a simple tune like El Paso popping in after the madness - just beautiful! Thanks for playing this one...loved it!
