Welcome back to the Tapers' Section, where this week we'll check out tunes from 1973, 1981 and 1989.
In 1973, on Jerry's 31st birthday, on 8/1/73, the Grateful Dead played at Roosevelt Stadium in Jersey City, NJ, and considering the year, and the celebration, it was unsurprisingly a great show. From the show's big jam sequence we have a long stretch if Jerry-centric music, with a Bobby tune in the middle: Dark Star>El Paso>Eyes Of The World>Morning Dew.
From eight years later on 7/7/81 in kansas city, we have the end of the first set featuring five of my favorite first set tunes from that era: Lazy Lightning>Supplication, Bird Song>Looks Like Rain>Deal.
Lastly this week, from eight years later on 7/19/89, we have music recorded at the final Grateful Dead performance at Alpine Valley in East Troy, WI. The June, 1988 shows at Alpine were known as the dust bowl shows, whereas as these shows in 1989 were dubbed the mud bowl. Plenty of rain and mud in 1989. Much of the Summer Tour of 1989 was hit by rain, actually. I distinctly remember getting heavily rained upon at Buffalo, Giants Stadium, RFK Stadium, and these Alpine shows. From the last night in Alpine: The Other One>The Wheel>Morning Dew.
Be sure to stop by next week for more tunes from the vault.
