    jerry quotes
Quotes by Jerry Garcia : "Somebody has to do something, and it's just incredibly pathetic that it has to be us." "Tipper and Al came to a show the last time we were in Washington. They're nice people, a nice family. We made every effort not to frighten them." "Truth is something you stumble into when you think you're going someplace else." "It's pretty clear now that what looked like it might have been some kind of counterculture is, in reality, just the plain old chaos of undifferentiated weirdness." "Every silver lining has a touch of grey." [w/ Hunter] "You do not merely want to be considered the best of the best. You want to be considered the only ones that do what you do." "What is life but being conscious? And good and evil are manifestations of consciousness. If you reject one, you're not getting the whole thing that's there to be had."

government intervention is what got us here. so, why not more? lets have them hold a gun to our head and force us to hand it out to whoever. And now my favorite band is going to support this. Where does this end? I just don't even want to think about it, but i guess i have to because it is coming. Socialism, communism, fascism it is all about the same. thanks surviving members of my favorite band. i might never sleep again and i am on the lower income side of your fan base. i guess my support of your capitalist ways doesn't matter. how could i feel like you'd care. please forget about those that refuse to work, it is their choice. your endless tours just postponed there plight. let them be. private charities will take care of them. i promise.

i don't know at what point some of you lost track of your mindframe. the dead has always been a symbol of freedom, without limitation. so many folks are posting negative energy remarks regarding tour supporting kids not working, supporting a candidate that actually has some chance of supporting freedom, etc. if the primary concern on the scene today is to talk down on it, then stay home and listen to sean hannity, because it takes more than buying the newest steal your face shirt to care. ann coulter used to be a dead fan, that doesn't make her worth listeneing to today. i can't believe that there is such a volume of people who know dead.net exists who are so against trying to fix anything

and i am aware ann coulter is a dead fan. of course we like the music, it is the best. however, when jg was around they were not making a stand with any liar from the beltway. thank god. obama is a socialist and the republicans pander to the christian right. if you really want a change try a new party, like the libertarians. i will always love the tunes and i don't want my freedom infringed upon. unfortunately, both parties stomp on this. change? how about a real change? like a new party, one that is not already in bed with lobbyists and special interests. think about it. for real.

Disillusioned with the system - make a difference by standing up, not whining about it. Think you know what Jerry Garcia would do? I am pretty sure you do not. Just because you have strong feelings about an issue and you are a fan of the Grateful Dead does not mean that you have the same ideology. Jerry Garcia's name is not something that should be evoked to try and tilt a debate your direction. There is not a doctrine for the beliefs of Jerome John Garcia - he changed his mind a lot (and likely would have over the 13+ years since he passed on.) There is nothing that gives us the right to say this ridiculous line over and over in the discussions: "Jerry would not have wanted this." It is very short sighted to presume the thoughts and stances of a very clever man who died 13 years ago. Remember that he was a dynamic soul and might very well have gone in any number of directions. If he lived into the 21st century he may have become good friends with George W. Bush and helped change the direction of the world. He may have chosen a life of crime and gone on the lam. He could have said nothing at all about the past 3 elections and this current one. The point is this: If you choose to use your vision of Jerry Garcia to try to win an argument, you do not get it (and I am quite sure you need to adjust your mindset if you want to grow as a person.)

Very uninformed on this I must say. Go ahead and live in a facist country then live in a socialist country and then tell me they are the same! The GD stood up for a LOT of issues since they were "born" so this is really no different, just a little heavier. As far as tour kids making the decision not to work is ok with me. But what about HOW you make your way. Is it bumming off of others, is that what the Deads ideal is, or the 60's ideal was? Is it selling dope? Well thats capitalism at its finest if ya ask me, your selling something for a profit, then theres the ones that sell bunk items! Don't get me started there! lol I don't think the 60's were about not working, it was about making new ways of earning a living, try working for yourself, or starting a non-profit. But DON"T go bumming off of others, thats not cool at all in my opinion. And yes I was a tour rat at one time but I didn't bum off of others and take other peoples stuff so that I could say that I'm free. Having to depend upon others is the same as working isn't it? Your out there all day and night, thats work isn't it? I don't care if you don't want to work, but just realize that taking from others is not the deal. But we can SHARE things and thats not what I see from most of the tour rats I know. Its all about taking and very little giving. Been there done that so I know the deal. If any of you realized that right now the ONLY way we are going to get some kind of change is hopefully in Obama. The independents need a voice and to step up, I agree. But thats not happening right now so we need to gather together and make a stand on who we believe is going to support what we believe in. I don't understand conservative deadheads. Sorry. Glad your here for the ride but I learned a LOT of things from my travels with the Dead and mostly that was liberal thoughts. Communal living when possible, peace, love, no war, understanding, earth friendly, interdependence of all things and people, karma, taoism, ect. and the list goes on. That is just where the music and trips took me to and my opinions on these have just intensified as I have gotten older. To look down upon others, (even in the Deadhead community there can be this Deader then thou attitude cause one doesn't have dreads, or has short hair.), to promote death to other countries cause they aren't like us, racism, sexism, ect, these things just don't belong at a Dead show in my opinion. Maybe the lot of you were there to just get as high as possible and have a free ride I don't know. But the things I learned and believe came from shows and all that entails. Lets all get TOGETHER instead of apart and try to make a difference for once. Now is the time!

Check it out..... They may have played one student protest and we are talking about the vietnam era. Regardless of my political views the Grateful Dead never played a political rally while JG was alive. They always avoided politics and rightly so. As for his dying wishes, they have been stomped on time and time again. IE his guitars willed to the maker, debra, MG etc. JG's views stopped mattering when he passed. God rest his soul. And thank you Jerry for everything.

Exactly! You've been living in a liberal bubble all your life, with, most likely, zero contact with conservatives. I mean real friendships, or other real connections. Keep disparaging conservatives.. keep believing those myths and falsehoods... keep your fine, precious prejudices. Keep your bigotry against "certain" Dead Heads. Yeah... that'll do it. I agree that Jerrys wishes were stomped on. Thats just plain sad. But over at the Obama 2 forum, someone posted MANY shows that were political in nature that the Dead did over the years. More so in the Vietnam days but think about it, we are in a situation VERY similiar to Vietnam. And we need MORE people talking about it and taking action. Seems that too many people just want to dance and not take a stand for something. This country is in big shit trouble, due to LACK of government oversight. They just let Wall street and the banks do what they wanted to and look where it got us. Plus some and I said some, of the people in the country feel the need to have a huge McMansion house when they can't afford it. So its sad time for this country. I used to have a Dead sticker that said, The antidote for society. Wish I still have that. Are you going silently screaming? I hope so, but if not have a good day anyway. Not trying to bust ya up just chatting thats all. And like someone pointed out, there is NO telling what Jerry would have done at this time. He changed a lot during the years and might have been all about it, or he might have been totally against it. We will never know, but I wish we did if ya know what I mean.

Whether it is Panic, Phish, the Dead or the real world, there will always be people hanging on and scamming their way to the next show, meal, or bottle of MD 20-20. On tour, private people take pity on these wayward souls and help them on to the next show. The same is true in your average city with your soup kitchen or shelter. Believe it or not, this is the free market system, capitalism, or whatever you want to call it. It actually works, if left to fix itself. In my day I called them dirt heads and apparently I am not sympathetic to their plight. Maybe I should be, but if I went to a show I either had a tix or the means to get one. Most of these heads expected a handout or a "miracle" as they liked to call it. Please.... Isn't that just like calling a bailout a rescue? Anyway for those who don't know, a miracle is a "free" tix to the show. Every show there would be hundreds of these fine tree-hugger panhandlers. Show after show after show. Now, I look at the world and I see these people everywhere. Thank god I don't make enough money to worry about how they get by. These are the people that our Rock Star Obama is praying for. Asking them to register and vote for "change". Too bad the republicans are just as bad. Their life-blood is the wonderful Christian-right. When if ever, is this country going to wake up and see what the founders really wanted? I think never.... But we can always hope. Posted by silently_screaming at 5:13 AM

Jerry Garcia, and all of the Grateful Dead may well have been liberals. But their ethic was libertarianism. They felt that they had no right to impose their politics on anyone. That is why they openly shunned politics throughout their career. What would Jerry do now? Who knows? But I have a feeling his libertarian streak would have shone through, regardless. In any case, this show is not a Dead show per se, but a show by an amalgram of artists, who are free to express their politics anyway they wish. It's also a free country, so more power to them. No, I'm not an Obama supporter, but so what? If they want to play, let them play. Considering the talent, I'll wager a whole shitload of conservatives will be there. After all, it's all about he music, not the bullshit politics.

Ed Sieb said Exactly! Uninformed is right. I know tons of conservatives and am friends with quite a few conservatives. We talk about things and we agree on some and disagree on others. Now I am not totally a liberal, but I just can't get it why people that are TOTAL conservatives would really GET the Dead like I and many others have. Not saying I am special cause I "get" the Dead, it just kinda happened to be honest on some sunny day! But what the Dead stood for, and a LOT of the shows they did that supported LIBERAL efforts and concerns, I stand for also. What about Greenpeace, they did several shows in NYC for that effort and I don't know ONE conservative who would endorse those tree hugging people from Greenpeace. I do appreciate that we all LOVE the music. But for me, and others, there was more there then just the music. There was and is a vibe of freedom, equality, peace, love, and really thoughts and actions that just don't have a damn thing to do with the way my conservative friends think or view the world. So don't go saying I know nothing about conservatives, I have plenty of conservative friends, we just don't hang out much anymore because we don't have a lot in common. I am about saving the earth and its people, they are more into capitalism, which is fine for them, I just disagree that that is the most important ideal there is. They don't agree with abortion, which I believe its up to the woman and her God or lack thereof, to make that decision. Bottom line is that theres not much we agree upon. How does this relate to the Dead? Well, I learned all these ideas and things from people at shows and the music. Ya know, sometimes ya get shown the light in the strangest of places of you look at it right. Thats what happened to me. I hate that this show is causing such a breakdown of the family. But I agree that the boys have a right to stand up for whatever they want to. After all the Dead never followed any rules. lol

Thats socialism is what your talking about, taking care of your fellow man in that way. BTW, we have socialist programs in our country. These are programs that everybody pays for and we don't even think about it. Fireman and police are 2 fine examples of socialist services. These are paid for by the whole community and we ALL have equal access to these services, that is what socialism is, this is not capitalism. Capitalism is about free market and profits. I agree with the person that said this is not particularly a Dead show, its a bunch of great musicians who are taking their time to make a stand for something they believe in. BTW, I do miracle people with tix if I have any extras. But I miracle those that are on tour and doing something postive for our community. Giving away free food, or whatever there gig is. Its about giving not taking in my opinion. IF we all were takers there would be NO scene.

I don't like the christian right or anyone telling a woman what to do with her body. just as i don't want anyone telling me what to do with my body. I love the music and i really was a huge liberal until i figured out that they are a sham too. Honestly, my point was the support of a political candidate who happens to be a socialist is not a stand they would of done before. do they feel guilty? i hope not. i will thank each and every one of them for the joy and happiness they have brought me. i am 38 years old and like churchill said a man with a heart at 18 is a lib and a man with a brain at 40 is a conservative. i still have not made it there because of the judging morals thing. I am a libertarian and i am pretty sure you guys are to you just don't know it yet. try this and see.http://www.theadvocates.org/quizp/index.html

Ah! There's the rub! Today, I am a total conservative. But back in 1967, when I got on he bus, I was a total Freak, with a capital F . I got into the music almost immediately. Loving the Dead, has nothing to do with one's politics, but one's head-space. Forty years later, I still love them. The very fact that you don't get it, implies that you still have certain prejudices against conservatives. You're letting certain prejudices, certain conceits get in the way of digging your conservative friends. I know; I used to be a liberal, with precisely he same prejudices and conceits as you. Been there, done that, as it were. Love of music is universal, and does not rely on politics or any other kind of social mindset. I'm pleased to see that you know some conservatives. Good. Don't lose touch with them. They make great frends, when you really need them. And open your mind.

Lots will open on SUNDAY! This should mean there will be a serious Shakedown street! On the ticket front: "Some patrons had attempted to purchase more than the limit of two tickets. If you had created a second account and purchased another set of tickets, you should have been notified by Ticketmaster that your order was cancelled and money was credited back to your charge card. In the event that you received tickets or TicketFast emails on a cancelled order, NOTE THAT THE BARCODE HAS BEEN INVALIDATED AND WILL NOT ALLOW ENTRY INTO THE BUILDING. Patrons with cancelled tickets will be denied entry and information will be provided for the PA State Attorney General’s Office in the event they need to file a complaint regarding any tickets purchased on the secondary market (StubHub, eBay, TicketNetwork, etc)."

I truly have an open mind, but yet I can still disagree with conservatives on many issues. Many, not all, conservatives are not about saving the little bit of enviroment that we have left, I am. I have twirled the consequences and pros over and over and I have made a decision after YEARS of looking at the pros and cons of lets say, drilling for oil in Alaska. Many, no all, conservatives don't want abortion for ANY reason, I say let a woman make up her mind, it might be killing a human, which I think it is, but its NOT my place to tell someone what to do with a decision like that. But on the other hand I fight against the killing of someone who has killed someone, That argument right there still sends me thinking about those issues. So I've made up my mind that its ok with the abortion because we area a nation that seperates church and state. Its up to that woman and HER god, or lack, to make that decision. On the other hand, its not right for the government, MY and YOUR government to kill someone. Thats the difference. So I don't totally agree with abortion but when it comes to laws I have to let others make that decision for themselves. That point of all this is to say that I HAVE thought a LOT about many points of view and just because I disagree with someone doesn't make me have a closed mind. What makes a person have a closed mind is when they DON"T try to understand the other persons perspective. Make sense? I am very openminded but I do believe in making a stand for something I believe in after some serious thought and understanding. What changed your thought process from liberal to conservative I wonder? I also have some conservative beliefs, such as those on abortion. Yet when it comes to laws, I am liberal. I believe enough in the Constitution that I have to seperate Church and State. This is a BIG problem with the USA right now. We have to keep these seperate. Thanks for some nice dialoque. I don't think we are trying to bash each other, I am certainly not. I just believe that the Deads music was more than that. Music is about a certain soul. Certain music speaks very specifically about certain human issues, and this is MY kind of music. Then you have fluff which is what ya hear today on MTV and the radio, and most of that I hear no soul. The GD had a certain soul that spoke to me the first time I heard them. I stand by that soul as does the GD in this choice to play Monday night. I hope you come inspite of your beliefs or prejudice's about the show. Maybe we can meet and hug and know that inspite of our differences we are both human and only doing what we think is the best for the world.

Looks like Shakedown could be getting harassed. Said in the BJC that illegal vending is just that illegal. That sucks. But its true that the lot will be open on Sunday for $20 a car, the day of the event parking is $10.00. The below is straight from the BJC website. So be careful to all! and have a good time but keep a heads up. Glad that I am a Wharfrat and at least don't have to worry about that. The venue is also non smoking so I don't know if they have a place for us to smoke or not. I hope so! When in the parking lot, a reminder that Pennsylvania state law prohibits the public consumption of alcoholic beverages in open containers. Any open fires are prohibited on Penn State property, as is any illegal vending.

thank you....your recent postings have been the most intelligent discourse i have read in these forums since the boys announced this show. very refreshing to see some thoughtful view points instead of the bashings that have been ladled out here over the last few weeks. brings me back to one of the things i always loved about a dead show, you could leave yer crap outside and enjoy the music, with other people who left their crap outside so they could enjoy the music, knowing we were all different, and relishing that fact. has'nt anyone noticed that this is not billed as a "dead show"? i think the boys realize the divisive nature of doing otherwise. this has torn us apart enough as it is.............THANK YOU!!!

Exactly! This is precisely what I've been saying.Rusty88, From what you're telling me, you sound more like a libertarian on both the abortion question and on capital punishment. I too am libertarian on abortion: yes, I do believe it is murder, but stopping it legislatively is imposible - women will demand it no matter what, so leave it in the hands of medical parcticioners, rather than back-alley butchers. Maybe we aren't so dissimilar after all. Back in the late sixties and early seventies, I was a liberal. A real Freak, a hippie. As far as I'm concerned I'm still a hippie. As a Canadian, our politics ran different than yours so there will be systemic differences in our politics. In my opinion, my values haven't changed. In fact, I was probably libertarian during those years. Like Winston Churchill said, "If you're not a liberal at 18, you have no heart, if you're not a conservative by age 30, you have no head." Fits me to a "T".

All I have to say is this....where would you rather live ... Socialist Sweden or facist Germany/Italy in the 30's ? nuf said. No system is perfect but no one accuses the Swede's of not being envrionmentally aware, pro-family, pro education. Even pro-business. They are just taxed to heavily for my liking. Facist Spain enjoyed secret police. Mass killings. You know ... great shit like that. Think before you speak.

The single best paragraph from the excellent Rolling Stone McCain article: "During his 1992 campaign, at the end of a long day, McCain's wife, Cindy, mussed his receding hair and needled him playfully that he was "getting a little thin up there." McCain reportedly blew his top, cutting his wife down with the kind of language that had gotten him hauled into court as a high schooler: "At least I don't plaster on the makeup like a trollop, you cunt." Even though the incident was witnessed by three reporters, the McCain campaign denies it took place." http://www.rollingstone.com/news/coverstory/make_believe_maverick_the_r…

Today, Sweden isn't socialist, and never was. It was and is still considered "Social Democratic". There are some pure "socialist" societies, but they are all despotisms, or 3rd World hell-holes, like Zimbabwe. There are others, which escape my memory right now. Most of those countries you consider "socialist" are just social democratic countries. A touch of socialism here and there but mostly true democracies and mostly free-market. That continuum from fascism to communism resembles a circle, with a small gap. Either side of that gap is communism on one side with fascism on the other. The gap is miniscule.

i can produce a ton of bad stuff about our savior obama. if you noticed i have been pleading for people to vote libertarian and stop being sheep. let me know if you want to hear all the bad stuff our messiah has on him. and btw, rolling stone lost its credibility probably 25 years ago. they confirmed it when kurt cobain was in the top 10 guitarists of all time and JG wasn't even in the top 20.

Rolling Stone? Credibility? Who? Where? LOLJann Wenner has been in the tank for the Democrats since day one (November 1967, IIRC). Rolling Stone is as reliable for political articles as Mother Jones is or The Nation. Real balance there! :-D Anything to smear the Republicans. And their music articles are crap too, and have been since they went to a magazine format in the aerly '70's. But it's popular with the college kids, so it must be good. (I need a "rolling eyes" emoticon here.)

So much animosity. I'm pretty anti-McCain and I'm very pro-Obama, but WOW. Yeah, there's a ton of bad stuff on all the candidates. The Libertarians, however are a FAR cry from the answer for me. I'm not into living in the woods & killing my meals every night. I'm pro-choice and I have no problem paying my taxes. I am a FIRM believer in "help your brother" over "help yourself", and whoever wants to call me a socialist, feel free to do so, even though it'd be a misnomer. The remaining members of the GD reuniting for this cause is what it is. They're not calling themselves The Dead and I wouldn't care one way or the other if they did. I'm going for the music AND for the support of the candidate. Calling Phil Lesh a FACIST? Get over yourself. Who on earth do you think you are??? "Yeah, man I love the music but the bassist is a facist." Grow up and quit the name-calling. Everyone's allowed his or her own opinion. Show a modicum of respect to someone who has brought so much joy into your world. Finally, as for that Rolling Stone article - yeah, really not credible. They only list EVERY source by name. If they were lying, they'd be sued for lible. Sorry - in MANY (most) cases, I would agree, as I stopped enjoying that rag LONG ago - but the article was well-written and listed their sources. In my book, that article could have appeared in High Times and would still be credible. ~ Pappy www.theCAUSEjams.com "Once in a while you can get shown the light in the strangest of places, if you look at it right." - Robert Hunter

What did Neil Young say back in the 70's? "It's better to burn out, than to fade away ... My, my, hey hey." Well, I'm afraid that Phil is beginning to fade away. I saw him the other day in Charlotte, and must admit, between that show, and now this Obama thing. Well, please Phil, take Neil's advice. It's only a shame that Neil didn't follow his own advice, either. This is not just about Phil and Bob, but my other favorite band, Bruce Springsteen. These guys need to support Life, and not the anti-Life ticket : Obama - Biden. BOOO. Greg SC

but there are a lot of Republican's and former military guys speaking on the record. In that article. McCain seems pretty much like a shorter more pissed off version than GW ... would you call your wife a cunt in front of three reporters ? Anyways...There hasen't been one politcian who doesn't have some slime on them.. Obama isn't a messiah, he is just a man. A well spoken individual who obviously is hitting a nerve with people judging by his ascendence up the polls in states which are red. I mean North Carolina might vote democrat. Think about it... NOrth Carolina might vote for a black man. Its called progress and America should be proud...regardless if you disagree with his politics. Read David Brooks speaking about Sarah Palin and Obama. Arch conservative. Has his head on straight. Just read it...Obama suporters and McCain suporters. http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2008/10/08/david-brooks-sarah-palin_n_133…

Mostly, this thread just makes me sad the amount of negative, barely concealed hate filled venom against warrior artists I love. I tried to avoid posting but the comment re: Phil fading away got my goat. I suppose it falls in the "one man gathers what another man spills"category but damn I'd put the Uncle Johns jam Dark Star>So Many Roads>Dark Star v.2>Midnight Hour segment up against any rock n roll being played today. Period. Full stop. My over 30 year mantra is "the tapes don't lie." The energy and artistic interchange between Jackie, Phil and the rest of the friends is a wonder to behold. On a par with seeing the flame rekindle with the core four. So, to the issue of politics your mileage may vary but the over riding sentiment of the artists themselves is that perhaps we would not be so far don't the shit tube had they been more conscious of political engagement earlier in their lives. To deride that is frankly un American given that little thing called the Constitution that in fact bestowed the freedom that let the music flower to the extent that it did. Time to change and restore hope...Obama-Biden '08 (OK,...I too am tired of that bullshit libertarian utopian ranting that would have us return to killing for our next meal) SongsfROwn
