Welcome back to the Tapers' Section, where this week check in on some fine Grateful Dead music from 1972, 1982 and 1989, all from iconic Grateful Dead performance venues.

Just a few days before the famous Veneta, Oregon show on 8/27/72, the Dead were playing the third night of a four night run at the Berkeley Community Theater on 8/24/72, and from that beauty of a show, we have Promised Land, Sugaree, Jack Straw, China Cat Sunflower>I Know You Rider.

From a decade later on 7/27/82 at Red Rocks, the first night of a three night run, we have the show-opening sequence of Jack Straw>Sugaree, On The Road Again, It Must Have Been The Roses, Me and My Uncle>Big River. The sound is a little rough to start out during Jack Straw, but it settles in nicely. This is the first Red Rocks show since 8/12/79, which was meant to be the start of a three night run, but the 8/13 and 8/14/79 shows were moved to Denver to the indoor McNichols Arena due to bad weather.

Our final selection this week is from 8/5/89 at Cal Expo in Sacramento, CA, where we have the start of the second set, featuring Hey Pocky Way, Playing In The Band>I Know You Rider>Terrapin Station. I was fortunate to attend this show, and the transition from Playing into Rider is one of those live Dead moments that I'll never forget, catching virtually everyone in the building off guard, a rare Rider without its partner China Cat Sunflower.

Half-Step-> Rider
That Half-Step -> Know You Rider from Meadowlands '85 is the first thing I thought of when I saw this Cal Expo Playing -> Rider. A classic. I just heard the Cassidy from 11/10 on my ride in this morning (dusted off So Many Roads disc 4). A couple of my dearest Dead homies were at that show. I'd gone with one of them to Richmond the previous week or so, then he and my friend Lee went to Meadowlands. He was our Dead mentor. Wish I'd have gone to that one, too. Never did see a show there. Really dig this Pocky Way -> Playing -> Rider sequence. Really hot Rider! Never knew about the '73 ChinaCatless occurrence. The next one was 11-10-85!

So, 4 Riders post 1970
And a slew of stand-alone acoustic ones in 1970. The most spontaneous rendition was probably the 88 one that started China Cat when Jerry got a bit frisky with Crazy Fingers. I'm thinking the other ones were pretty much pre-planned. Thanks Ted, Zuckfun.

this GD82 recording has me asking:

WHERE IS PHIL IN THE MIX? GD82 has some great suff, but I frequently find myself wondering why Phil is so difficult to hear and feel in that year's recordings? One of the reasons I like pre75 GD so much is because there is such a prominent presence of Phil. Later on he turned himself way down, or the mixer (Healy?) turned him down. I want that grindy crunchy Phil like you hear in GD71.

Two other shows

In the 79-92 post-Keith era had unusual treatments of I No U Rider'. My personal favorite was the 1/2 Step>Rider>Playin' at the Meadowlands on 11/10/85. Memory escapes me on the 3rd show, may have been in 91... Anybody else out there know? 11/10/85 is worthy of release, at the very least the Charlie Miller treatment (@):~} Cleaner Than A Betty Board {~;(&) Anybody else have a handle on the date of the third one???

..just sitting here listening to some 82 and 89 Dead getting ready for Mr. Lemieux...I dont care what they release, I'm IN!! I'm going to stick by my prediction of 12/31/89 and see what happens. How about throwing in a left-handed monkey wrench and releasing another fall 72 show as a companion to SSDD! That would be cool! Remember folks:the 70's SELL! All of Dave's Picks sell out and are expensive if you miss the boat! But as I have said numerous times, release whatever,Mr. Lemieux has my full trust! I think he will go with an 80s release so we shall see! :) Take care folks! now to tackle this 72 gem!!!

Rider appeared after Playin' and before Terrapin

The mysterious Rider...

7/29/88- China Cat-Crazy Fingers-Rider- Or maybe it's the Other One-Spanish Jam-Rider from 3/31/73. Seems there's only 4 instances China and Rider are separated (post 1970). The other two are previously mentioned.

I think this has been covered many times before but in for instance 1982, the recording is just a PA feed. The Betty Boards and many other great sounding recordings in the 70s were mixed specifically to tape for the sake of listening to those tapes - separate mix from the PA in the room. So what? The difference is that on the Betty board, they can crank Phil up and use EQ before it goes to tape. On the other hand, the PA feed is just audio shap shot of whatever is being sent to the PA. And this also may have a little to do with his weak sound on some of the boards: If they're playing a smaller hall or venue in 1982, Phil is using a big stack onstage, it's plenty loud for the room, they may not need to put that much of his bass through the PA for reinforcement. Therefore you're not going to hear as much on tape. It probably also has a lot to do with his own specific set up and how Healy was mixing overall. And finally, it was Phil himself. Whether it sounds good on tape or not, he just wasn't very energized or sharp in 1982 compared to say 1974 or even a few years later circa 1984, 1985. He sounded bored and lifeless much of the time even when you could hear him in 1982 - in my opinion.
