Change Rocks Brings Together Dead, Allmans One Mo' Time
The Dead reunited last night (Monday, October 13) for the first time in four years, thrilling a sold-out crowd of devoted fans when they performed in State College, PA. The “Change Rocks” concert, which also featured the Allman Brothers Band, was held at the 15,000-capacity Bryce Jordan Center on the campus of Penn State University to raise awareness for Senator Barack Obama and the upcoming November 4 election.
Original Dead members Bob Weir, Phil Lesh, Bill Kreutzmann and Mickey Hart were joined throughout the whole show by RatDog's Jeff Chimenti on keyboards and Allman Brothers Band/Gov’t Mule/ex-Phil & Friends and The Dead guitarist Warren Haynes. They tore through a 15-song, two-hour set that included such Dead classics as “U.S. Blues,” “Franklin's Tower,” “Playin' In The Band,” “Dark Star,” “St. Stephen” and “Touch of Grey.” The crowd--a mix of college students, longtime Deadheads and Barack Obama supporters--were on their feet from the first notes of show opener “Truckin,’” through the psychedelic explorations of “Dark Star,” to the end of “Not Fade Away,” the night’s closer.
In a video-taped message shown between sets, Senator Obama told the audience:
“For twenty months, I’ve been traveling this country from town to town-even developing a ‘Touch of Grey’ of my own. And on that journey, I’ve seen Americans who are hurting under the politics and policies of Washington. They need change, and I am running for President to bring about that change.
“On November 4th, you’ll get to make a choice between two different candidates with two dramatically different visions for our future. You’ll get to choose which direction you want to take our country. I believe that now is the time to put Americans back to work and rebuild our middle class; to live up to the promise of affordable health care for everyone; to guarantee a quality education for all our children; to end our dependence on Middle East oil; and to bring this war in Iraq to a responsible end. We can do all that. And on November 5th, I hope to announce that we ‘Ain’t Wasting Time No More.’”
The Dead last performed in 2004 on their “Wave That Flag” tour. In February of this year, Hart, Lesh and Weir played a “Deadheads For Obama” show at the Warfield in San Francisco, and last year Weir, Kreutzmann and Hart performed at a post-inauguration for Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi.

Double Rainbow
Did everybody see the double rainbow on either side of the Bryce Jordan Center for awhile in the late afternoon? The cool atmospheric phenomenon legends continue...The crowd was really laid back and there was a nice mix of old timers and the kids who are still coming out in droves to see the boys (after 43 years and counting! The faces really do stay the same.) The Allman Brothers came out and blew the roof off the place, and then the Dead treated us to a beautiful set with Bobby and Phil clicking as usual and laying down tasty, dynamic rhythms, Warren and Jeff jamming away with unusual power, and Billy and Mickey having some serious fun. Both bands were ON! A gorgeous day filled with kind vibes and kinder jams, prefaced by the aforementioned rainbows. Woo-hoo!

I'm not sure what show they saw, but the show I was at last night rocked out! Nothin' left to do but smile smile smile, in my humble opinion.

Allmans were great! Dead was really good, seems like they never let Warren really achieve liftoff. Transitions were a bit rough, Still, very enjoyable. Would like to see a tour of this. Probably should spend some rehearsal time beforehand. Whats up with the missing merchandise? No T shirts!! Nothing inside at all!! Did the Republican Party stop the shipment from arriving? I mean really, there should have been a huge Obama merch set up inside to help get the message out. No buttons, stickers, event posters, tshirts.... nuthin......Can someone please explain this to me...........

Listened to the stream whilst downloading and thought it rocked, as far as the ratdog board, well you always hear know it alls digesting each and every detail and critisizing this or that. I will never understand why even bother to buy a ticket or listen if all you can do is bitch, complain, and funniest of all, trying to second guess what they are going to play.Let the words be yours, I am done with mine.

Finally got a miracle
After tour in a blur during the 90s, I got to experience a true miracle! Last night was my first show as a WarfRat. I remembered every song in the set, and I remember every conversation I had. The set was dynamic! The boys were on. I can't believe they've been jammin for 43+ years. Keep on keepin on!

What the hell were they on? From what I can hear, I didn't expect them to sounds this great! If this is them playing with no rehearsal, I can't imagine what some practice would do!
I really hope a tour comes out of this. Warren wasn't my first choice to play with them either, but I've been converted. I love that 'wah" sound. I would follow this band around if I could. Thanks to everyone posting links!

I always keep expectations very low in the post-jerry era of dead permutations and combinations. Thank god for low expectations...this show was really enjoyable. For those who choose to criticize segs, consider the fact that the "leader walked off", and Phil and Bobby are in the uncomfortable position of having to direct the jams, particularly toward transition times. Not to sound too obnoxious, but in the old days, they simply had "to be" and allow jerry to gently lead...that vacuum creates problems which we all have to accept.
It can also be a lesson in humility to watch Bob and Phil try to do that which Jerry never really had to think about. And it is also a lesson in humor watching Mickey try to control the flow into Dark Star, as Phil grabs the reigns away from him!! Once again, the manifestation of a vacuum in leadership and human nature colliding in space.
As for Warren, he erred on the side of respect. We all know what a fine "Jerry" he can be...it had nothing to do with being tired or worn out. He too was put in an uncomfortable position...this felt like Bob and Phil's show, and Warren eased in soft and slow.
Finally, it was clear that the band rehearsed...you can't just walk in and almost pull off Help or Slipknot, or Ashes, or Unbroken Chain. Those songs at least required the boys backstage an hour before the set walking through changes...trust me.
No criticism from me. If anything, I miss the voice the most.

and i can/couod be argumenttative/judgemental
as for jer always leading the boys, i don't suport..if you follow over the years, 'ace' has tended to be the anchor reigning in jer from outer tonal zones...last nite, phil laid down a great lower range of support while jeff pulls the boys from a too passive a warren...bill/mickey were tight as well open to booby's re-directing (ie/ pick up the tempo for seque into faster dark start). historiucally it's always been joked that 'ace' always wanted to lead the boys and it would be obvious when bobby would lay down a riff w/o jer/phil responding and he would shake his head laying down the pattern again...last nite, booby was louder than usual adding his impressive rhythem/lead chords that only he does (well..maybe keith richards comes close).
my posting was not so much a blemish but rather an honest appraisal...as for warren..i've been listenning tom him since he played w/ david allen coe and recognized his genius but last nite after a HOT bros. set he struggled w/ keeping his string hand on the neck seeking help w/ wiping it into his tee shirt

I completly agree with this statement, I acknowlege that to be very much part of the situation that ocuurs during key transisitions and alos during "reeling it in" at several bridge points between songs/jams/ ect..... WELL PUT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Boy was it foggy on the way home this morning from State College!!!
Had a gr8 thyme with old friends and new the only down point was the parking lot....with the police running up and down the rows busting people even sitting in their car minding their own business...but i guess they where breakin the law.....Just wish the boys would have filled the Philly Spectrum instead..in fact if it came down to it i think Philly has more schools to rally up if that was what they where looking for......
But we where all there for the MUSIC and the music LIVES WITHIN US ALL....
For not playin together for several years i think the boys sounded gr8.....with like a gr8est Hit setlist the music just PHilled the air with song....From the begining lines of TRUCKIN to the last clap of the hands to the beat of the heart because we know our LOVE WILL NOT FADE AWAY........

Wow, those boyz tore it up from start to finish. When the boyz dont play together much, you really appreciate what Billy and Mickey bring to the mix. What a psychadelic show it was. Anyone who complains should just jump off the bus. These boyz are the best and only band that can pull off jams like that. The changes the exploration- WOW. Bring on more!!
Last night
I agree with TJ that doing these shows without Jerry leaves the guys in a conundrum - either get someone to play like Jerry or get someone totally different. Too much like Jerry and they sound like a cover band of themselves (not a criticism having played in a GD cover band for 20+ years) - or go in a different direction and I would count Warren Haynes in that group. He's an awesome guitarist and vocalist and has moments of brilliance with the boys but he has a very different approach to playing. While he is an excellent improviser the music as an ongoing conversation that the Dead is not what he is versed in. He seems to get a little lost in the subtleties, transitions, etc. Since there is no map or predetermined direction he seems tentative as to when to interject himself and when to lie low. Hell, the Grateful Dead didn't always get this right with Jerry but when they did it was magic. That being said, I had a great time at the show. The song selection was very adventurous and if they fell flat a few time so be it. I thought Phil was spot on and Bobby was great other than a few obligatory lyric tweaks, it's always great to listen to Mickey and Billy chase each other around the one. It wouldn't be a Grateful Dead show without warts and this show had its fair share but it was great to hear them dust the rust off the old tunes and put on a show. I hope they can work it out and go on tour this Spring.

Sounds great!! I think Phil gets a boost from Bobby. Just Bob and Warren is a great guitar balance, bring back The Grateful Dead! (and The Allman Bros and both should tour continuously until the sky falls!) I want more.....

A good night and well worth the trip to PA. Those who continually draw the comparison to the days before will continually set themselves up for disappointment. It will never be the same and that's just how it is.
So enjoy what we have, enjoy what they give us now.They came back together after 4 years to give us a real good time! I had a real good time.....

i just love it when no one "leads" the boyz. they just sort of chase each other around all night long. i love it. full of rhythm. this show rocks. warren is great. not leading so much but more blending in. we all know he can rip killer leads all night long. this shows his true musicianship. for a musician to be able to completely mold into a different vibe to fit in with a band that plays much different than his normal style is simply amazing. and he did not overplay at all! props to you warren. your wah sound is just beautiful. reminds me of the old days.

THE SHOW
Some funny comments about the show have been posted.This wasn't right , this was weak, blah flippin' blah. The only thing that needed to be checked was the audience. Way to show Penn State that the Dead draw people who come and screw up your campus. I am a green deadhead, in two ways. I have been a few actual shows, '89 and after. Just a few. I know "weak" right? I did not dig the scene at all in the '90s. I have road the ratdog (not capitalized) road for far too long. Getting drunk and trying to sing over the band seems to be the usual audience participation these days.Put Rob in and the you had a RATDOG, not a Dead cover band. I Can't visit the dog sight, I don't want to read about a Train-wreck (isn't that a strand or somethin'?) .
Like the Gore years, it didn't happen. Bobby was the leader of the band. Phil, Mickey, and Billy were great, Warren was great! Whatever your hangups are with the show...... you can always not come. Or when you go bowling with Bobby you can talk over lyrics with him. Perhaps when your jogging with Phil, he'll take a minute to listen. Good luck on driving to Hawaii to chat with Billy. Maybe you will bump into Mickey in Washington, D.C. & Maybe not. I'm sure they love your comments. Or maybe they would want to talk about why they performed. OBAMA. Oh, yeah?
So I'm low on Dead shows, bloated with the Dog, and dissapointed/pleased to have Phil's great bands flushed every year or so. Some line-ups better than others, like when Warren practiced for the Dead shows with a couple of Phil's friends, for a few years. Awesome! Let's not mention letting JO dabble with Jerry's lyrics, not just Phil but the whole damn band. Do you want Joan back?

I agree with many of the afore mentioned sentiments. First, it was great to see the boys together again jamming away. As my buddy put it: they weren't playin' around; they went straight into jamming after the Truckin'>U.S. Blues opener. Now, I will say that there were some issues with transitions/segues. I'm sure that they rehearsed, but regaining more smoothness with transitions might come after more playing together. Regarding Warren: I don't believe that he was tired, but it is possible. I do recall a show I was at in 2002 (Deer Creek) where he played with Gov't Mule, Allman Brothers and then Phil, and he rocked that entire show. However, he was a little tentative with the soloing last night, so it is also possible could have used more rehearsal time. I saw a bunch of P&F shows in 2001 & 2002 and he was amazing during those shows, probably because that incarnation had a lot of playing together time under their belt.
I loved seeing Billy and Mickey together banging away. I forget how powerful they can be especially with Phil's bass booming in. They were all looking like they were having a good time playing. This show had some real nice jams even with the transition issues. Again echoing previous statements, in the post-Jerry incarnations of the band, I am not expecting mind blowing shows, just good music. They sounded real nice last night and they put in the effort. I also think that is important to note that we may not see them all together again anytime soon, so we have to savor these events when they happen.
The only thing that I will say that I was a little disappointed in was that I was hoping for a little more inter-band jamming. For a special occasion, one-off gig like this, I thinking that this would be the case. Either way, I am happy and fortunate to have been able to see this show.

is that the boys got together to jam. Along with the fact that a bunch of old and new heads got a chance to see them work to get the old beast up into the air, AND that this may portend for more good things to come. I am happy for all of you.
