    CHANGE ROCKS - The Setlist

Change Rocks Brings Together Dead, Allmans One Mo' Time

The Dead reunited last night (Monday, October 13) for the first time in four years, thrilling a sold-out crowd of devoted fans when they performed in State College, PA.  The “Change Rocks” concert, which also featured the Allman Brothers Band, was held at the 15,000-capacity Bryce Jordan Center on the campus of Penn State University to raise awareness for Senator Barack Obama and the upcoming November 4 election.

Original Dead members Bob Weir, Phil Lesh, Bill Kreutzmann and Mickey Hart were joined throughout the whole show by RatDog's Jeff Chimenti on keyboards and Allman Brothers Band/Gov’t Mule/ex-Phil & Friends and The Dead guitarist Warren Haynes.  They tore through a 15-song, two-hour set that included such Dead classics as “U.S. Blues,” “Franklin's Tower,” “Playin' In The Band,” “Dark Star,” “St. Stephen” and “Touch of Grey.”  The crowd--a mix of college students, longtime Deadheads and Barack Obama supporters--were on their feet from the first notes of show opener “Truckin,’” through the psychedelic explorations of “Dark Star,” to the end of “Not Fade Away,” the night’s closer.

In a video-taped message shown between sets, Senator Obama told the audience:

“For twenty months, I’ve been traveling this country from town to town-even developing a ‘Touch of Grey’ of my own.  And on that journey, I’ve seen Americans who are hurting under the politics and policies of Washington.  They need change, and I am running for President to bring about that change.

“On November 4th, you’ll get to make a choice between two different candidates with two dramatically different visions for our future.  You’ll get to choose which direction you want to take our country.  I believe that now is the time to put Americans back to work and rebuild our middle class; to live up to the promise of affordable health care for everyone; to guarantee a quality education for all our children; to end our dependence on Middle East oil; and to bring this war in Iraq to a responsible end.  We can do all that.  And on November 5th, I hope to announce that we ‘Ain’t Wasting Time No More.’”

The Dead last performed in 2004 on their “Wave That Flag” tour.  In February of this year, Hart, Lesh and Weir played a “Deadheads For Obama” show at the Warfield in San Francisco, and last year Weir, Kreutzmann and Hart performed at a post-inauguration for Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi.

    the great part of it
is that the boys got together to jam. Along with the fact that a bunch of old and new heads got a chance to see them work to get the old beast up into the air, AND that this may portend for more good things to come. I am happy for all of you. "Let there be songs to fill the air" The Truth is realized in an instant, the act is practiced step by step.

    Nice show, good times
I agree with many of the afore mentioned sentiments. First, it was great to see the boys together again jamming away. As my buddy put it: they weren't playin' around; they went straight into jamming after the Truckin'>U.S. Blues opener. Now, I will say that there were some issues with transitions/segues. I'm sure that they rehearsed, but regaining more smoothness with transitions might come after more playing together. Regarding Warren: I don't believe that he was tired, but it is possible. I do recall a show I was at in 2002 (Deer Creek) where he played with Gov't Mule, Allman Brothers and then Phil, and he rocked that entire show. However, he was a little tentative with the soloing last night, so it is also possible could have used more rehearsal time. I saw a bunch of P&F shows in 2001 & 2002 and he was amazing during those shows, probably because that incarnation had a lot of playing together time under their belt. I loved seeing Billy and Mickey together banging away. I forget how powerful they can be especially with Phil's bass booming in. They were all looking like they were having a good time playing. This show had some real nice jams even with the transition issues. Again echoing previous statements, in the post-Jerry incarnations of the band, I am not expecting mind blowing shows, just good music. They sounded real nice last night and they put in the effort. I also think that is important to note that we may not see them all together again anytime soon, so we have to savor these events when they happen. The only thing that I will say that I was a little disappointed in was that I was hoping for a little more inter-band jamming. For a special occasion, one-off gig like this, I thinking that this would be the case. Either way, I am happy and fortunate to have been able to see this show. Do or do not; there is no try.

    THE SHOW
Some funny comments about the show have been posted. This wasn't right , this was weak, blah flippin' blah. The only thing that needed to be checked was the audience. Way to show Penn State that the Dead draw people who come and screw up your campus. I am a green deadhead, in two ways. I have been a few actual shows, '89 and after. Just a few. I know "weak" right? I did not dig the scene at all in the '90s. I have road the ratdog (not capitalized) road for far too long. Getting drunk and trying to sing over the band seems to be the usual audience participation these days.Put Rob in and the you had a RATDOG, not a Dead cover band. I Can't visit the dog sight, I don't want to read about a Train-wreck (isn't that a strand or somethin'?) . Like the Gore years, it didn't happen. Bobby was the leader of the band. Phil, Mickey, and Billy were great, Warren was great! Whatever your hangups are with the show...... you can always not come. Or when you go bowling with Bobby you can talk over lyrics with him. Perhaps when your jogging with Phil, he'll take a minute to listen. Good luck on driving to Hawaii to chat with Billy. Maybe you will bump into Mickey in Washington, D.C. & Maybe not. I'm sure they love your comments. Or maybe they would want to talk about why they performed. OBAMA. Oh, yeah? So I'm low on Dead shows, bloated with the Dog, and dissapointed/pleased to have Phil's great bands flushed every year or so. Some line-ups better than others, like when Warren practiced for the Dead shows with a couple of Phil's friends, for a few years. Awesome! Let's not mention letting JO dabble with Jerry's lyrics, not just Phil but the whole damn band. Do you want Joan back? YES THE RAINBOW ARC COULD BE SEEN IN paint by number morning skies FROM THE WEST about 10AM EST. YES I HAVE PHOTOS 35mm not photo-shopped OF THE RAINBOW OVER ALPINE VALLEY AT THE GDFR. That's my 2 cents worth. Wow I just noticed there is not a cent symbol on my computer keyboard.................................................One in 10,000 come for the show

Posted on October 14, 2008 4:59 AM Jam session gets political Bob Weir, reunited with other members of the Grateful Dead, plays Monday night at a political concert for presidential candidate Barack Obama. By Mandy Hofmockel and Danielle Vickery Collegian Staff Writers The "Change Rocks" concert at the Bryce Jordan Center, which drew 15,000 attendees, including one costumed as a green Jerry Garcia bear and another sporting a cape with a blue and red donkey, let loose Monday night. Members of the Allman Brothers Band and the Grateful Dead joined Democratic presidential candidate Barack Obama's campaign to encourage people to volunteer and vote. At the concert many people rose and swayed, dancing in their seats and some twirled about on the floor. There was a smattering of tie-dyed T-shirts and glow sticks at the venue. Balloons that read "stoned again" with a marijuana leaf drifted to the floor and so did a few people who climbed from their seats above. The people were promptly escorted away. Between performances, the campaign took the opportunity to inform those present about Obama and the importance of civic engagement. Nittany Lion cornerback Lydell Sargeant and other Penn State football players joined quarterbacks coach Jay Paterno on stage to address the crowd. Sargeant, who said he plays the drums and that Grateful Dead drummer Mickey Hart is an inspiration, encouraged people to get involved and to vote. He also asked people to bring the same pride they have for the now No. 3 college football team to volunteer to make Obama the next president. Thirty years from now, when Paterno's five young children ask what he did to save the country, he said, he could tell them he helped to get Obama elected president. Charles Dumas, a theatre professor at Penn State who also spoke at the event, said he has supported Obama since the candidate was a community organizer. He encouraged people to volunteer at the local campaign office. Dumas brought up an old saying: Vote early and vote often. "I'm not suggesting that you vote often," Dumas said. But, he added, asking other people like neighbors, roommates and housemates to vote increases an individual's power to influence the election. Casey Miller, youth vote director for Penn State Students for Barack Obama, also addressed the crowd. She said she hoped half or more of those present in the BJC would get involved with the campaign. Obama appeared on a screen above the stage to specifically address the BJC crowd, yet his voice could barely be heard over the cheering. "No matter which candidate you favor, take part in this election," Obama said. He also thanked the Allman Brothers Band and the Grateful Dead, who he called legendary musicians. The Grateful Dead got a standing ovation before they had even emerged on the stage. During their first song, hundreds of glow sticks erupted from one side of the crowd on the floor of the venue.

Wow! From the opening notes of "Truckin" you could tell this was gonna be one hot show. The guys were in fine form, and played a particularly rocking set Monday night. If you happened to be lucky enough to be there, you know from whence I speak. Did I just say "from whence I speak"? Anyway - highlights included a powerful ""Dark Star > St. Stephen" into Phil singing a great "Unbroken Chain," (my personal favorite - yay!) and, well... the rest of the show, to tell ya the truth! My big complaints, as if I deserve any: I really feel that Warren, whom I love and respect dearly, is in one too many bands playing in THIS band; I just feel he makes The Dead sound too much like Gov't Mule and The Allmans, and long for another, more unique guitarist in his stead. Jimmy Herring maybe? His tour with The Dead was great. And bluntly, I hate Jeff Chimenti's obsessively dissonant riffing. I don't even play keyboards, but think I could manage to bang on them fairly similarly at times! Where are the sweet keyboards of Keith, or Brent, Or Vince, or Rob Barraca? Who would, and has, made an oh so much better keyboard player for the band; and if the guys do tour again, I WISH they'd bring Rob back for it. Even when The Dead had both of them, the show's were infinitely better for it. Come on guys, get him back into the fold! Okay - enough bitching. "Help > Slipknot" was tight and exciting, and "Throwin' Stones," always a sure crowd pleaser, was as powerful as could be. "Playing" was, as always, rocking and fun, and "U.S. Blues" was certainly an appropriate choice for the night, given the Obama benefit factor. Overall - A great show and, hopefully, a taste of things to come. I've definitely got my fingers crossed. The guys were truly ON Monday evening - like a frying pan with the chicken sizzlin' in it; as hot as could be, and promising of tasty things to come! Oh yeah, The Allmans kicked ass! Derek Trucks is THE BEST guitarist in the world today, no doubt in my mind! Gregg seemed healthy and sang up a deep fried Southern storm, as he is wont to do; and Warren, in his element HERE, blew us all away. The percussionists, as usual, backed the whole shindig up tightly and efficiently. Finger Lickin' Good Times For All! Yee-ha!

Hey, WavyDavy, don't forget about the shooting star in '84 or the rain in Pittsburgh in '95 or all the other weird atmospherics over the years. I'd like to add that the enthusiasm for Obama and excitement over the Dead being together again made this entire day a singular experience. It was the hippest. And thanks to the tapers who did a great job on the recording and got this one out quickly so that people everywhere can enjoy it (and be able to make up their own minds about the show instead of just reading message boards.)

From start to finish, this was indeed a great show. The halftime entertainment was a little weak, even for us Penn State fans, but the Allmans rocked and the Dead were impressive. It was good to see Phil smilin' through the show. The only problem with the night was the audience. I am a Happy Valley resident and have heard many complaints about the condition of the parking lots after the show. A few of my co-workers also work as lot attendants and they told me that the lots were in worse shape Monday night than on a football weekend that draws 110,000 people. They said the amount of trash left in the lots was unbelievable. I don't know if it was the vast amount of young heads there who don't know parking lot etiquette or just plain stupidity. I will always support the music of my favorite band, but it sucks being embarrassed by the childish behavior of other fans. Sorry to bring some bad vibes into this thread, but if we want to keep seeing great music, we need to respect the venues and teach our children well.Walk into splintered sunlight Inch your way through dead dreams to another land

in front of the venue was a mountain of trash and cans and bottles ...duh there were NO trash cans there...the man said that they never showed up for the show. The lots could of used some more cans too, only bags for recycles which were left everywhere. They should of been more prepare! Over all a grate time!!

Unlike some of the other post, the show; at best, was weak. I have seen hundreds of them and this one ranks among the worst. Bobby cannot lead the band, Bobby cannot lead the band, do I need to repeat myself! This was a slap together show and it was evident from the get go. Don't blame the crowd or the venue, the band was flat, unrehearsed, overly loud, and fighting for the lead. Having Warren on the stage and not taking advantage of his talent was a huge mistake.Sorry folks, if you want me to fall in line with all the others and say "it was awsome" it was anything but. On a positive note the weather was great and the atmosphere with the fans was equally as good. I will stick to the Phil Shows, it seems he is more concerned about what comes of the stage not who is on it. Did I mention I would like 1/2 my ticket price refunded since the second 1/2 of the show was not worth the ink on the ticket. Feel free to share your opions with me personally, I am not a Dead basher just expect more from the boys. " you do not merely want to be the best of the best. me and my uncle saw the rainbow as we pulled in and parked.. awesome.. I believe they were actually what you call "sundogs".. anyway I skipped the Allman Brothers set at that point (a scalper was selling floor seats for $30!!) and went in for a big massive Wharf Rat meeting in the hall behind the stage (we will survive!).. Then went up in the nosebleeds, stage left and a little behind the stage and ended up dancing and spinning on a spotlight pad that wasn't being used up at the top of the arena. It was freakin awesome, and I saw so many good friends out on Shakedown Street that I only see on tour. The jams were a little rough but the show over all was incredible. We drove 1100 miles in two days but I am so so so glad I came, even if I don't agree with the band participating in political activities (jerry must be rolling in his grave!)..

Love shows at the Gorge; for me and my group of friends, it is just exactly perfect. It is much closer to Northern Rockies than Seattle or Portland and we need a show inland for those of us in Northern Rockies. We got mountains, we just don't get Dead shows. Gorge is a point where both coastal and mountain folks can gather to listen and dance. If the doors of perception were cleansed, everything would appear to man as it is, infinite. William Blake

Relix is confirming a Spring 2009 tour by all of the surviving members of The Grateful Dead: Sources confirm that the surviving members of the Grateful Dead — guitarist Bob Weir, bassist Phil Lesh, and drummers Mickey Hart and Bill Kreutzmann — are planning to tour in April and May of 2009. There’s no word yet on the band’s configuration — previous configurations of “The Dead” and The Other Ones have included singer-guitar hero Warren Haynes, guitar ace Jimmy Herring, singer-guitarist Susan Tedeschi, singer Joan Osborne, keyboardists Jeff Chimenti and Rob Baracco, as well as guitarists Mark Karan and Steve Kimock. I loved the show, but agree that the band was a bit rusty and the sound was rediculously loud. Personal highlight for me was the Franklin's Tower. St.Stephen was awesome as well.Allman's rocked too and met Derek Trucks twive while walking through town/campus! Hope the boys do a lot more rehearsals before potential Spring tour.

I appreciate every thing about the show - from Warren's low key playing, being behind the stage to watch the intimate interplay between the band, the jams and segues, the thundering bass-drum link, Bobby's strong voice ....The autumnal drive set the tone for a magnificent time. (There was at least one giant recycle bin in the lot and you can always carry out your trash)

People left the lots in disarray, as usual...too worried about partying, and Shakedown, and then getting out of the lots after the show. Had anyone bothered to look, near every port-o-pot stall, there were not only trash/recycle bins, but rolls, and I mean serious rolls of blue bags to pack trash in. It was sad to see the same ol' same ol' in the lot the mornin' after the show....I thought people cared more about our environment. It would have been nice to see folks clean up, but there were isles of trash littering the entire lots. Show was great though, don't let these dismal people tell you otherwise...the Dead wasn't just plying a political gig, they were playing to their fans, big time. It was one hell of an evening. And, no $ went to Obama, they basically played because Phil asked them to on behalf of his son, and they all like Obama for our country...there was no ranting on about who you should vote for, just Obama's video "Helllo", Phil's typical "organ donor" plea at the end, and Bobby's quote about if every Deadhead in FLA had voted in 2000...which, people, think about... I too would like a link for the Allman Brothers set if anyone has it. Post that up here, please! Seriously, what a smashin' concert - it went on until nearly 12:30 AM!! I thought the Dead rocked. And so did my spouse. We were impressed, even with the kinks, and Bobby ill, Warren playing friggin' ALL night, you had to be there, truly awesome. Glad we had Grandma watch the kids and drive in, the beauty of the day, evening, people and show were worth it.

How do you know that no $$ went to Obama? That hardly makes sense, but I believe you if you tell me you've got the source. I agree - smashing concert!! I put my reveiw on the Deadheads for Obama / Part 2 thread. I was VERY impressed by the band. I didn't notice any "rust" by any means. A few flubs in lyrics - but that's ALWAYS been the case. I thought the core 4 put out an amazing show. I'm in complete agreement with the fact that a bunch of people showed up just for a party. MAN, I wish they'd get over that. It'll never happen, but I wish I could attend a show where EVERYONE was there, simply for the music and was mindful of their surroundings. There was way too much trash laying around post-show. I cleaned up a bit down the row near our car, but other than that, I was pooped!! Must be gettin' old. ~ Pappy www.theCAUSEjams.com "Once in a while you can get shown the light in the strangest of places, if you look at it right." - Robert Hunter

I read somewhere, reliable but can't remember offhand, (maybe an article on gratefuldeadbooks.com ) that this concert was NOT for Obama in the sense of generating cash for him, but more about making young people aware of him and registering new voters, etc...thus I guess, all of the campaigners and the video about Obama. I doubt he wanted to have an association with the Dead after all the McCain/Palin BS...there was absolutely no media there at all that I saw, just two cameras videoing the concert from the front of each side of the stage, not sure for what-maybe the Dead's guys, or maybe Penn's people? Anyone hear about this? I personally have no issue at all with the Dead supporting Obama, I actually applaud them for speaking out. Back when they were young, the condition of the world was different, and they did not take into consideration their own children, and their children's children's futures.... a lot is at stake in this election, and I think it's great that they offered Obama their support. We do not know what Jerry's reaction would be in such a time in our lives....but we cannot dwell on it, we must live. We need a country united, not divided, and like some poster said, it's not just about taxes (yes, the Dead and the Allman Brothers will pay more), but it's about much, much more than worrying about taxes. I am happy to hear they are doing a Spring tour. It seems like the time is right for the Dead to rise up, sleepy ole' Heads to wake up, and new Heads to be born. The world needs the Dead, and not just old tapes floating around...time for the real Deal again. We heard rumors that Jackie was gearing up to jump in, not sure if this is 100% true, but he sounds like he'd be a great fit...can't wait for Spring and to hear and see what they can do! After seeing them, not playing together for soo long and jamming 14 tunes nonstop, I for one am psyched for the possibilities this Spring and Summer. Cannot wait!!!!!

Make this happen for next year. plenty of camping/recreation on the columbia river. its a livenation venue. i agree with johnman on the security factor. St Helens, Oregon's columbia meadows is much nicer(dead 7/2/04) best shakedown scene after a show i had seen in a while. in fact in '04 the next night up at the Gorge(7-3-04), the dead opened the show with Shakedown Street" i think out of recognition of the party the night before.

Couldn't have said it better, Cosmic, and here's to a really long tour!!! They sounded really good together, and personally, I thought the crowd was much more ignited than at recent Phil and Ratdog shows...even the youngsters were having a very good time...it was so nice to hear and see and feel the good vibes. Didn't see anyone wearing a Dem. Flag, but I did see the green dancing bear, he was GROOVIN'.

I can't believe that anyone would call this great, or horrible. Somewhere in between, therein lay the truth. The fact is, anytime Bob keeps the slide in his pocket is by definition a good night to start. Secondly, anytime Mickey Hart is forced to keep all his drum toys in the flight case, that is good omen as well. Egos in check...check'm at the door boys. Just play some music and do your best with what y'got...that is what we got on the 13th at Penn State. Concerning a possible upcoming tour, and the choice of guitarist...please, please lets not bring up Jackie's name. He can't do the job. He probably never saw Jerry play live. The ideal candidate would be the jerry clone in DSO....I know this is weird for the existing living Grateful Dead members, but let's face it...if you want to sound like the Dead, sound like Jerry, the dude from DSO is the best living Garcia disciple. Herring is great, Warren is a jukebox of classic rock seemless riffing, Derek is a unique stylist, but none sound like or want to sound like Jerry. I want to hear someone actually trying to fufill his job, his role, his responsibilities to the Dead's sound...it is almost useless for the band to tour if they don't make a concerted effort to "search for the sound"...Jerry's sound. Its really readily available and abudant...Trey could probably do it really well if asked to check his own ego at the door. Anyway, let's also avoid Rob Baracco...bless his heart, the guy plays more notes in a single song than Keith ever played in an entire set....less is more. Would love to see a tour, but I'm damn happy they not only played together again but that they rocked! The audience recording is great! I can't and won't stop listening to it. Rock on, old dudes!

No $ went to Obama? Then why was I asked questions related to political contributions when I purchased the tickets from Ticketmaster? And the title of the show was: Change Rocks: A Concert to Benefit Obama for America. You're mistaken. Also, everybody seems to have an opinion about how band members should play and that sort of thing. Hasn't everybody noticed by now that the Dead have always done whatever the hell they felt like? And God love 'em for it! If you want them to sound a certain way, then stick to some old recordings from that era. This show was great. When the crowd erupted as Phil began singing "Franklin's Tower," the emotion was just overwhelming. Thanks to the Dead and to the Allman Brothers and also to Penn State University for providing a friendly atmosphere for such a beautiful show.

The discussion about this show has been one of the best I have seen since this site started. Thank you for this high level of discourse about the musicians, performance etc. It has been fun to read and given me smiles and insights. I have listened to the show several times and was hoping that Warren would have let it rip wide open. Oh well, still am enjoying it for what it is. A nice night with some ups and a little rust but lots of joy. I am just so glad they got together and happy that so many of you had such a good time. Once again, it was great to see all the Boys pounding away. It doesnt matter really what they play or how they play, we have learned to live and cherish ALL of it. That doesnt change the fact that the show was on the very weak side of things, as I could have more or less expected. A LOT of missed opportunities by Warren, who absolutely smoked with the AB, leading me to believe that we were in for one helluva night. Not to be! Phil was pretty much hiding in the corner, Warren never came out of his corner (so to speak), on the opposite side, and Bobby hanging in the middle with nowhere left to hide. After all, His job is to shed light, not to master! The good news...Ill be there the next time, and the next time, and the next time, until there is no next time, and hopefully.....so will THEY!!!

What a sham it was the concert was supposedly sold out within days of posting tickets, I had to gothrough a scalper website to pay a huge fee, only to realize the tickets went on sale again the day of show there were so many extra tickets that people couldnt give them away. I ve been going to shows since 85 and never had seen anything like that but its not been a long time since the dead or whats left of them has become political. I wonder if the fake sell out was a sham for the obama campaign to collect more for thetickets, it would be easy to find out for i have the girls name who originally bought the ticket. I wonder who she works for. As for the dead fuck politics and key on music, lets not forget folks that the dead is a multimillion a year corporation and dont have the little guy in mind any more its been a long time since those old rich guys were young poor hippies a very long time.

Releasing tickets on the day of a show (or a few days before) happens for pretty much every arena-sized concert - no matter who it is or how fast it initially sells out. It wasn't a sham. That's just how ticket sales work. It's been that way for at least 20 years.

I can remember at the dead/allman bros show in dc in 73 that if you filled a bag with garbage, you were given a free ticket to the next days show. Obviously there wasn't a second show here, but why couldn't someone make an announcement about helping to pick up the trash and where trash bags could be found?

If you took a piss in the parking lot pottys, you couldn't miss the huge trash bins and the rolls, and rolls, and rolls of blue recycle bags...do adults need directions on how to figure out a way to clean up their own trash???????? Obviously, by the look of the lot the next morning, but seriously-all the "environmentalists", bunch of bs...it is always embarrassing to see lots after Dead shows...people NEED to be more respectful, and seriously, instead of putting a bumper sticker on your van, put your trash in a can!!

I seriously read somewhere that the campaign didn't accept $ from this show, however, I cannot find the article to support myself at the moment. That being said, if you scroll up, you will notice in the paragraphs above, it does NOT mention a thing about the concert benefiting Obama, it actually says to concert was held "to raise awareness for Senator Barack Obama and the upcoming November 4 election." Sooooooooooo...without my article for support, make your own conclusion, but I know what I read, just not where I read it. Whatever the case may be, we are so glad they chose to reunite, thought the entire show-Allman Bros. and the Dead rocked, the parking lot scene was pretty cool, folks were great, from the old-timers, to the young college kids, it was a great evening, and we (my family!) cannot wait for Spring 09! And, as stated a few times here, our country desperately needs change-Go Obama! Deadheads VOTE-it's your privledge, don't waste a precious gift. Whomever you choose, at least get in there and vote!! That's the message, Nov. 4, VOTE.

I've talked to people who said that Warren didn't do enough. I've also talked to people that say they'd love to have the DSO dude, so they could sound more like the Grateful Dead again. Here's my take on it... I don't want Warren to do "his thing" like he does w/ the ABB. He's a GREAT guitarist, but he chose wisely by not coming to the forefront and 'taking over the show' (which he easily could have done). On the flip-side, the DSO guy does Jerry better than almost anyone I've ever heard, BUT - I don't want someone "doing Jerry" (stop it, you dirty minds). Personally, I'm not after Phil, Mickey, Bobby & Billy trying to sound just like they did way back when. I'm more interested in hearing them trying to make NEW magic (the old fashioned way) with the tools available. I DO think they should have a lead guitarist - to play a solo, to add flavor, etc....but NOT to be the "centerpiece" of the stage. The 'core 4' are the centerpiece, and to me - that's just how it came across Monday night. I think they made the right choice and Warren made the right choice. The 4 of them played blistering stuff, while still getting tripped up a bit here and there (which is the BEAUTY of this music - improvisation and taking CHANCES). If I want a "Jerry" - there can only be one. Everyone else is a mere imitation and that's not what these guys should be putting out. For the TOUR, here's what I think they should do... Pick a keyboardist and a guitarist from a local jam-band (GD cover or original) from each town on the tour. Have NO shows throughout the tour on consecutive nights, so that they can have one day with a little rehearsal with their picks, then the show the next day. THAT'D be FUN!!! Keyboards: Chimenti over Barracco any day - props to Rob's busy-ness....great player, too many notes. Chimenti was tasty and perfectly under-stated. ~ Pappy www.theCAUSEjams.com "Once in a while you can get shown the light in the strangest of places, if you look at it right." - Robert Hunter

Pretty sad I get to read about how trashed the place was. Good dirty hippie impression to leave on such a high vis event. I'm sure it wasn't everybody. Maybe just a bunch of hyprocrite college students or ungrateful people just there to see the freak show. Bandwagoneers! Wish I was there maybe for just that reason I would have been the guy in the tophat passing out trashbags. I hope there is a spring tour I will be attending some of these shows. The election will be over so hopefully there will be no drama And we can all be there to enjoy music, FUN and celebrate life and our enjoyment of all things we heads love. I'm sure there were alot of first timers, which we were all at on time, at this show that may have seen the light and can't wait for the bus to leave the station. So we who have been around a while need to reach out and shed a little light and keep the scene clean. Anyone remember when the the Dead last played as the Warlocks and why. The Grateful Dead was not allowed inside the Hampton city limits with there traveling circus. So the billing was changed to the Warlocks which most of us of course got it. This was the late 80's and I remember the scene to be pretty bad at the time. I know that Some cities on the mention of Grateful Dead still say not no but fuck no. So keep the scene clean and have FUN
