    CHANGE ROCKS - The Setlist

Change Rocks Brings Together Dead, Allmans One Mo' Time

The Dead reunited last night (Monday, October 13) for the first time in four years, thrilling a sold-out crowd of devoted fans when they performed in State College, PA.  The “Change Rocks” concert, which also featured the Allman Brothers Band, was held at the 15,000-capacity Bryce Jordan Center on the campus of Penn State University to raise awareness for Senator Barack Obama and the upcoming November 4 election.

Original Dead members Bob Weir, Phil Lesh, Bill Kreutzmann and Mickey Hart were joined throughout the whole show by RatDog's Jeff Chimenti on keyboards and Allman Brothers Band/Gov’t Mule/ex-Phil & Friends and The Dead guitarist Warren Haynes.  They tore through a 15-song, two-hour set that included such Dead classics as “U.S. Blues,” “Franklin's Tower,” “Playin' In The Band,” “Dark Star,” “St. Stephen” and “Touch of Grey.”  The crowd--a mix of college students, longtime Deadheads and Barack Obama supporters--were on their feet from the first notes of show opener “Truckin,’” through the psychedelic explorations of “Dark Star,” to the end of “Not Fade Away,” the night’s closer.

In a video-taped message shown between sets, Senator Obama told the audience:

“For twenty months, I’ve been traveling this country from town to town-even developing a ‘Touch of Grey’ of my own.  And on that journey, I’ve seen Americans who are hurting under the politics and policies of Washington.  They need change, and I am running for President to bring about that change.

“On November 4th, you’ll get to make a choice between two different candidates with two dramatically different visions for our future.  You’ll get to choose which direction you want to take our country.  I believe that now is the time to put Americans back to work and rebuild our middle class; to live up to the promise of affordable health care for everyone; to guarantee a quality education for all our children; to end our dependence on Middle East oil; and to bring this war in Iraq to a responsible end.  We can do all that.  And on November 5th, I hope to announce that we ‘Ain’t Wasting Time No More.’”

The Dead last performed in 2004 on their “Wave That Flag” tour.  In February of this year, Hart, Lesh and Weir played a “Deadheads For Obama” show at the Warfield in San Francisco, and last year Weir, Kreutzmann and Hart performed at a post-inauguration for Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi.

I missed the first 3 songs 'cause our group thought "eh - they'll never start AT 6:30". I knew better, but still missed "Revival" - my favorite ABB tune (and perfect for the occasion). ALSO, I think somewhere on this site, I referred to the ABB bassist as "Alfonso". BRAIN FART! They are NOT the Rolling Stones. That was Oteil Burbridge - NOT Alfonso Johnson. I meant to say OTEIL's tone was a bit nicer than Phil's, IMO (still liked the GD set better!). ~ Pappy www.theCAUSEjams.com "Once in a while you can get shown the light in the strangest of places, if you look at it right." - Robert Hunter

Am enjoying listening to 10/13/08. Has some of that good old loose, flowing GD feel to it. Just wish it weren't juxtaposed with overt, blatant political advocacy as it is. Wonder what ol' Jer would think about a political candidate giving a campaign speech to the 'heads right before and virtually as part of the show. I, for one, don't like it a bit. Time was, the GD was a celebration for EVERYBODY, which was one of the really beautiful and unique things about a GD show. This incarnation attaches a poltical litmus test to the event, which inherently manifests divisiveness, polarization, and conflict. Oh, of course not as long as you don't deviate from the program. Not what I'm accustomed to or am looking for from the GD experience. Everybody wants me to be just like them. The times they are-a-changin'...

I echo what cats like CosmicCT say, and hope for an official release. I guess it would have to be a download to be an immediate fundraiser, although I'd rather have something official. Hey, Ratdog did it immediately after shows for awhile. I would gladly pay full price for something to memorialize history in the making on several fronts. Even after the election, I would pay if proceeds somehow went to support Obama's education initiatives, for example. "The poet lifts his pen, while the soldier sheathes his sword. . ." -Ian Anderson

OK guys a little late in coming I know, but here is my take on this fine day in musical history... My cousin David and I left Pittsburgh at around noon. The ride to Penn State was 3 hours. It was a beautiful day here in PA. The sun was shining, it was around 75, the leaves(if you're into that sort of thing) were at their peak. Basically a perfect fall day. We rolled into the venue at around 3pm and parked behind the football stadium, which is right next to Bryce Jordan Center. Immediately after parking we got out of the car and cracked a Ying Ling Black and Tan. Or I refer to them a poor mans Guinness. We look a quick jaunt around the lot. To my surprise the was no huge Shakedown area. There were defiantly people walking around vending (mostly Steal your face merch with some type of Obama image and some assorted odds and ends, like buttons, stickers, posters, etc.), but it lacked the city block element of a true huge shakedown we've all come to know and love. The crowd was a lovely mix of old and new heads alike and everyone was having a real good time. In the lot I didn't see anyone getting hassled for open container or anything like that. We ran into some friends, went back to Cousin Davids cars and drank the rest of our P.M.G. until about 6pm when we started making our way into the venue. Now rumor had it, that security was going to be super tight at this show, but this wasn't the case at all. Light pat down like any other show was all we got. The line getting in was fast and efficient. Took about 10 minutes which I didn't think was bad for 15,000 people. We got to our seats and not 2 minutes later the Allman's come on, Promptly at 6:30. The second the light went out, the whole arena gets the overwhelming scent of like 10,000 different strands from all over the good ol' US of A mixing together? I think that's what heaven may smell like. Anyhow the Allman's were absolutely on point from the opening note. I really don't know what I can say about these guys that hasn't already been said. The are absolutely flawless!! Hands down. If God has a favorite jam band I'm sure it is the Allman Brothers. They don't miss a beat, note, lyric and most importantly, their jams and transitions transcend you in a way that is purly magical. Being different and original every time but yet they give you that ever so familiar feeling of hanging with your oldest and dearest friend while wearing your most comfortable pair of shoes. Highlights of this set for me were "Revival", "and it Stoned me", Don't Think Twice" & "Anyday" with Susan Tedeschi (man does Mrs' Trucks wail w/ the Brothers!!!), and "Trouble no More" I could hear this tune every day for my natural born life and never tire of it). "Whipping Post" close out their set. It was 8:30ish. For the next hour people, locals, PSU staff, some of the football team, Obama campaigners, and assorted others were on stage talking about the cause and the importance of the show. Every one mingled, peed, and got back to their seats in a very timely fashion. The lights go out at 9:30 and there was a video taped message from Obama thanking everyone. He cracked a "Touch of Grey" joke, and encouraged every one to vote. It wasn't overly political. The overall message wasn't vote Obama. It was vote. The Dead come on and the place fell apart. I don't want to be too critical here. It was what it was. Was it a lot of fun? It was a great freaking time!!! Was it an experience? I truly believe this show was, due to the political nature and the reasoning behind the whole thing. Did everybody play great and play their asses off? Hell yeah they did!!! Was the vibe unbelievable? I think it was a beautiful place to be. Everyone was dancing their asses off having a blast. But...Was it the best musical performance? I don't think anyone could walk away saying it was. They guys didn't have much practice, some of the transitions were a little sloppy, but I won't knock it. They really found their grove after "U.S. Blues". Looking at it purely from a musical standpoint "U.S. Blues" was a train wreck. But hey, I'm not here to criticize. Any way a lot of people were saying Warren wasn't doing much, that he was tired. All I can say is these people don't know Warren very well. This show was obviously put together to be a celebration of the Dead and the Deads music. Even though Haynes has toured extensively with every other person on that stage, he is not one of the original members. This show was defiantly geared towards the core 4. And there is absolutely nothing wrong with that. Those who have seen/heard Phil shows form the Warren era and 04 Dead shows, know Warren is more than capable than, and does go above and beyond what we heard at PSU. However getting back to my point. Warren respectively held back all night. For instance I said "U.S. Blues" was probably the most unorganized tune of the night. Warren easily, FLAWLESSLY, could of taken a hold and saved that tune and turned it around to one of the hardest jams of the night. Again, Warren respectively held back and let this night of music center around Phil, Bobby, Billy, Mickey and the music they brought to the world. You could tell he was having a lot of fun, just being a part of it. Which to me truly shows his professionalism and humbleness when it comes to what he can bring to any band on any stage. It ended up being a great show, I think the only time Warren was on lead vocals was on one verse of Dark Star. Any way the set was a lot of fun!! If the spring and/or summer tour rumors are true, I'm sure the band will work out their transitions and those Warren heads will get a little more of "Big Pappa". The set ended around 12:30am. The only bummer of the night was when we got out of the venue and saw the absolutely horrid condition of the parking lot. Sad thing is there were trash cans every where. I literally haven't seen that much filth since my last Phish show in '98. Night in a nut shell... Allmans= Stellar performance!! The Dead= Great set, great energy, whole lot of fun. Thank you for getting this show together!! Tour please!!! But practice a little. You guys have all been playing fine music with a lot of different fine musicians for the last few years, and everyones style is different. I don't think it's wrong in saying you need to get used to playing with each other again. (Come on guys...get your filthy minds out of the gutter).

i was at the show and was pleasantly surprised how good it was.i have been a deadhead since 1974 and really stopped going to shows in the mid 80`s.my last show was in 1993.i just thought the magic was gone and the playing uninspired.but on the 13th i was shocked how good it was.and warren haynes i thought was fantastic.he didn`t sound to much like jerry.i thought he balanced it perfectly.i heard people complaining before the show even happened that with warren they would sound like the grateful molly. a reference to molly hatchet,a southern rock band.well they did not.the set list was off the charts great, the sound was good(could have been a little louder though).the only complaint i have is some of the new arrangements i didn`t care for and some of the transitions were a little disjointed, but not having a lot of rehearsal time i expected that.i must say i was so glad i drove the 4 hrs.and spent the $100.i bought an extra trying to get a better seat.i`m even hoping for a tour.at 48 yrs old i`m thinking of hitting the road again if they are out there.

The Other Ones, the Dead, and the different line-ups have been alot of fun for me (coming from another 1974 guy). In my opinon. I see the boys taking chances and jamming like the olden daze. Warren is not Jerry, but it is ridiculous to think anyone could be. The rest of the guys are there and playing well, and whomever they have for lead guitar is OK by me (I would love to see Kimock or Sless with the guys, and would welcome Joan for another tour as well). And I am hopeful that we will get more chances to see them all together and woudl encourge you to see each of the core 4 with their own bands. UJS's account as well as yours have me geared up fo the next tour! Thanks much for the reviews and count me in!!!!! The Truth is realized in an instant, the act is practiced step by step.

http://www.rollingstone.com/news/story/23605227/springsteen_jayz_lead_o… The whole article is about all the musicians coming out in support for Obama, and it mentions two _official_ Obama fundraisers: Dead/Allman Bros and Springsteen/Billy Joel. So, perhaps it really WAS a fundraiser! And,. honestly, the only reason he wouldn't want the money is because he wouldn't want ties to the Dead, but if that was the case... why even ask them to play for you??? Also, remember, Barack used to toke up back in the 70's -- you don't think he jammed to some Dead way back then??? Finally, IF Obama didn't take the money, I bet a local PA organization did and using it to fund Obama related events in PA, even though we're not much of a battleground anymore! - delaney * Glad to see PA getting it right -- now will the rest of the country??? ============================== "Don't be afraid to try something new. Is "available", sort of, on their website. You can't buy it...but it's a bonus disc if you buy their entire 2008 live collection. $100 down now, and a total of around $669 when all the shows are in. Huh?

Thank G-d for Obama having the intellect, morality and luck to lead,Thank G-d for the Dead that are live, Thank G-d that the dead rest in peace, And when the next jam starts, Feel the music bounce off your ears, Feel your mind bounce off the crowd, Think of "Skull and Roses" with his yellow ribbon in his pony tail, He still remembers the secret, how the grove has the trees lined up, how it felt to have figured it all out, all of us together. Hey, when Pennsylvania turns blue, we can say yee-ha! And that is because Phil, Bobby, Mickey, Bill, etc. will be paying huge tax increases under Obama, that money will be turned over to us "middle class" Americans. I can't wait! Thank you Obama, Bobby has been dying to pay a million or more in taxes each year, and we can't wait to get our greedy little hands on it. Thanks, Obama, it was all worth it. Greg SC
