Hill Aud pt.1
12/14/71 In such fine sound! Love this show and the next night, too. In fact the whole bloomin' month would make an extraordinary boxed set - 11 shows counting New Year's Eve.I do wonder what '71 surprise is in store ...?
I've got a T-shirt with the Hill Aud poster on it - please, uncle David, bring us the un-cherry-picked bounty from Dec '71 - you know it's a can't lose!

The Terror
I've really gotten into the Flaming Lips this year, and their latest release, "The Terror," is my pick for album of the year. A couple years ago they did a cover of Pink Floyd's "The Dark Side of the Moon," and "The Terror" is like their own version of what TDSotM was all about. If you're a Lips fan (or if you're not), I highly recommend giving "The Terror" is listen. Actually, give it a few listens; it gets better every time you hear it.
Top Ten for 2013
I like to do a Top Ten list every year and these are mine for 2013. Not doing it as a critic saying they are the best, rather it is what I enjoyed and found myself listening to most. In no real order:
1 Tedeschi Trucks Band - Made Up Mind
2 Ry Cooder - Live in San Francisco
3 Pat Metheny - /Tap
4 Bill Frisell - Big Sur
5 Jonathan Wilson - Fanfare
6 Bombino - Nomad
7 Dawes - Stories Never End
8 Honey Island Swamp Band - Cane Sugar
9 Tommy Malone - Natural Born Days
10 Vince Gill and Paul Franklin - Bakersfield
Honorable mention:
Bob Dylan - Another Self Portrait
Red Baraat - Shruggy Ji & Big Talk
Dumpstaphunk - Dirty Word
And the best live show I saw...BY FAR...was Tedeschi Trucks Band at the Joy Theater
I'll second that...
I was also fortunate enough to get to experience Tedeschi Trucks Band at the Overture Center this autumn. They played their hearts out for a very grateful, gray-haired audience. Angel from Montgomery > Sugaree > AFM was definitely a standout. I agree with the "best live show" sentiment.
Boston
12/30/69 A perennial fave - jeez, this show has everything I love about the Dead from this year. Maybe, just maybe, this is one of the ones we'll see inna Dave's Pick next year. If you haven't yet heard this precious jewel one, please, don't deprive yourself any longer.

Dick's Pick 3 and ruminations......
I downloaded Dick's Pick Number 3 a couple nights ago. Needless to say, I thoroughly have enjoyed it. It's hard to go wrong with anything from 1977.
I've had the "To Terrapin" concert recorded on May 28th for a while. It's interesting to listen to one show that is only six days earlier and it sounds quite a bit different.
I'm not that obsessed with sound quality. I'm old enough to remember the latter days of vinyl. In the early 70's records were thick and they were high quality. By the time I was a kid in the late 70's and early 80's the records were thin and they skipped constantly. I remember a copy of the Rolling Stones "Some Girls" that skipped.
I do think vinyl has a warm feel to it though but I hated having to go back to the record store all the time because the album skipped. I also remember putting a penny on the needle to try to "groove" the record.
I'm becoming a fan of gdradio.net. My subscription to XM Radio has lapsed. I think gdradio does a great job of mixing it up.
What else have I been listening too?
The Rolling Stones "Get Yer Ya Ya's Out" live from 1969.
I also went on a Chris Cornell kick listening to a lot of Soundgarden, Temple of the Dog, and Audioslave. Was the Seattle grunge sound the last great burst for rock music? I don't know. I think some of Cornell's stuff ranks up there with all the other classic bands that happened to be lucky enough to be born earlier in time.
I love the version of "Dancing in the Streets" on DP #3. Estimated Prophet and Eyes of the World are also stellar.
I recently listened to one of the concerts I attended in person on the Archive. It made me realize how fast time goes. At 46 I'm neither old nor young. I am kind of in a strange middle ground. My back lets me know I'm not getting any younger.
I am interested in some of the Europe '72 recordings. I have "100 Year Hall" and I think it kicks butt. Would love to hear from my old friend Matt J if he ever surfs these boards. He took me to my first show and was a "real deadhead".
Peace.

Linkin Park "Somewhere I
Linkin Park "Somewhere I Belong"
(When this began)
I had nothing to say
And I get lost in the nothingness inside of me
(I was confused)
And I let it all out to find
That I’m not the only person with these things in mind
(Inside of me)
But all that they can see the words revealed
Is the only real thing that I’ve got left to feel
(Nothing to lose)
Just stuck, hollow and alone
And the fault is my own, and the fault is my own
[Chorus]
I wanna heal, I wanna feel what I thought was never real
I wanna let go of the pain I’ve felt so long
(Erase all the pain till it’s gone)
I wanna heal, I wanna feel like I’m close to something real
I wanna find something I’ve wanted all along
Somewhere I belong
And I’ve got nothing to say
I can’t believe I didn’t fall right down on my face
(I was confused)
Looking everywhere only to find
That it’s not the way I had imagined it all in my mind
(So what am I)
What do I have but negativity
’Cause I can’t justify the way, everyone is looking at me
(Nothing to lose)
Nothing to gain, hollow and alone
And the fault is my own, and the fault is my own
[Repeat Chorus]
I will never know myself until I do this on my own
And I will never feel anything else, until my wounds are healed
I will never be anything till I break away from me
I will break away, I'll find myself today
[Repeat Chorus]
I wanna heal, I wanna feel like I’m somewhere I belong
I wanna heal, I wanna feel like I’m somewhere I belong
Somewhere I belong
