Who to vote for? I enjoyed the wealth of the Clinton years, could this be a repeat? I know absolutely nothing about Obama, except that he is younger. That could be a good thing. I know all about Bob, Phil, and Mickey's veiws, but do I want to support the California dream? I am really iffy on this issue. My primary is coming fast and I really need to make a decision, we shall see.

Bobbalee, I am actually a registered Libertarian and I registered for the party when I was in High school and always liked the idea that "nobody should tell me what to do while I am in my own home." But as I have many agreements with the Libertarian party I also have many disagreements such as no gun laws, no environmental laws, no social programs, little to no government. Maybe I am a bit out dated on these policies but this was the Libertarian point of view when I was following it closer. If I am wrong please correct me. I have been a fan of Milton Friedman (economics geek here) but I always had many questions about minimizing the role of government in a free market. This is sort of Bush’s policy on global warming. Let the market figure it out as it knows more that the government when it comes to such issues. I studied Friedman’s quantity theory of money and we can even say that Friedman is responsible for the connection between inflation and money supply and hence our current interest rate system that the Fed uses today. Federal Funds Rate etc. But I think you disagree with this right? Please tell me more about the Libertarian party as I have been out of touch with them for some time.

Sorry to burst everybodys bubble. The difffernce between OBama and McCain is about 15%,Dems and Repubs are two gangs that are constantly fighting over the turf called USA. I suggest you learn about the Libertarian party ot the libertarian philosophy. Ron Paul is a libertarian running as a republican in the primarys. I like Obamas attitude however his policies will not get through Congress. Clinton has the smarts to be president but is so politically slimey she inspires no one. McCain well it won't be Bush 3 however he will be tied to an old corrupt party. Look behind each parties stance: Dems will talk about education however what they mean is "as long as the NEA controls it." Repubs say school choice but what they really want is tax dollars going to religous schools. The same for defense, farm policy, Social Security etc. They use their power to reward their friends and punish their enemies until they cough up protection money. Both parties will do anything to stay in power. They start wars, find enemies everywhere and think nothing of stealing our rights to make sure they keep their system going. Our gov't owes between 10-15 trillion dollars in unfunded gov't pensions, subsidies, Social Security. Medicare. See the Fed lowering interest rates? (not for us) After the election they will rise sharply. Why? because our dollar is becoming weaker and weaker. It will not attract the people who buy our debt the people who own the debt will demand higher interest rates. Why do we still have troops in Europe and Japan? Why do we insist on surrounding Russia with NATO countries. Why? because our industrial military/welfare complex needs to have a large military to keep the economy humming. Dems will scream bloody murder when somebody wants to cut out the military base in their district. Repubs claim they want a smaller govt but have done nothing to shrink gov'r unless its to let corporations off the hook when they make a bad business deal. Both .parties use the fear of other peoples and countries to keep the military industrial complex going go into the ghetto every politican is running a welfare office-I used to insure an AIDS clinic in Miami-they never seemed to have the money to staff the clinic with doctors and medicine. But every board member got their $60,000 salary. and they were all connected pols. when my wife was a Masters degree candidate the welfare agency she worked at made up dozens of fake clients to get more grant money-she refused to sign off on it and was terminated. The owner was an elected official who plays the race card every election. Want to change the system? Read books by Ayn Rand, Milton Friedman and stop looking the other way. Free your self and your mind first. Oh and listen to the Good Ol Grateful Dead. And the road goes on forever.... BobbaLee

I was not sure who I would vote for this time around but then I read “audacity of Hope" and I made up my mind. Barack Obama is what I think of when I read parts of the constitution. He is the memory I have of reciting the pledge of allegiance back when I was in 1st grade. Really, he is a reminder of what I was always taught and believed. I also feel his foregin policy will be more intuned with reality as he as actually lived outside the US. Lets see what happens but Barack Obama is change.

If I vote for someone and they later do something really fucked up, as they always do, then does that mean I am partly responsible? And if I don't vote to keep out the most evil one, what then? Obama seems like a nice guy. Talks the talk, but can he walk the walk? We have no real way to know. He kinda back stabbed his minister but had little choice as to not do so would have been suicide, perhaps. I would tend to favor him although I'm sure he has a snowballs chance in hell of beating McCain. Hilary, where to start... I find her to be completely false and untrustworthy. Having said that, her and Bill back in the White House would basically be a rerun of Bills term without the Monica thing. That wouldn't be so bad. But she has no chance of beating McCain. McCain, since Bush cheated him last time around he seems to have been playing the game of play submissive to the big dog until in a position to take over with the big dogs help. Has this changed him, or is he still the same maverick under the hood? He's actually the most liberal Republican of this era. He's a true war hero in an age where the term is loosely thrown around, and has the most experience. I think he's a man of conviction even if I don't agree with all of his positions. I think he will bring the troops home in the right way if given the chance. I don't think he really wants the war to go on any longer than necessary but u never tell the enemy your plans so it's intelligent to demoralize the enemy by saying you'll stay 100 years if necessary. I think when all the hoo-haa dies down Americans will take him as the most steady, stable choice. Are you kind?

They are part of the political machinery that has been steamrolling over Americans, bargaining with lobbyists, and selling out to the "pro-life-war-mongering", constitution stomping, big brother, elitist right! Educate yourselves and do some research to find out the depth and breadth of lies that spew forth from Hillary's pie-hole. We don't need another liar in the house; male OR female. She has lied about her experience. She never had security clearance and sleeping with slick Willy doesn't count...Talk to Northern Ireland. She brought peace to them don't you know? All of Ireland is laughing about that...Macedonia? She claims to have opened their borders... funny, they were open before she even arrived and Bosnia...well you know how she ran from the plane under sniper fire...liar, liar, liar. my husband's all for Obama, change, get a fresh start out of the washington bogged down with lobbyists,etc... but to be in a position to gain the nomination in the first place, you're already part of the 'old boy's network'. Hillary has connections, not experience. if she had experience it meant that she was privy to decision-making she wasn't allowed to be privy of. so Obama has a good enough record, keeps harping on the war vote, a vote like many that he refused to give a vote on, has dirty Chicago politics behind him- and all that against a war hero who is a hawk that wants to continue a non-sensical war because 'we' will show the world as leaders how it's done. I live in a very densely democratic area, eastern pennsylvania- and it'll give Obama the vote most likely, but the center of the state is rural, we call it Pennsyl-tucky, sometimes pennsyl-bama- and I have a feeling that like a lot of places everywhere, NRA card-carrying militia members and most southern men aren't giving Obama a vote. As much as many don't want more Clintonism, or a woman in the white House, they'd sooner vote for McCain to cancel out Obama. The vote swing this time is the young vote. I lost my first vote of Carter VS Reagan, but this time we need the USA to be concerned with world issues that don't revolve around where we get our oil. If McCain wins- then education is kaput! No child left behind isn't a possibility and is an utter travesty and affront to public education. $$$$ spent on waste- we will have no Social security at all, cost of living will push anyone out of the middle class, and the minority achievement and employment gaps will increase even more. Unemployment will be more epidemic than now, which is at an all time high.. I am scared because if I had to bet who will win, I think deep down that most Americans are going to go with McCain- I'll still go Democratic, but I think the young have to rock the vote and go to the polls in numbers! Now I have to decide if Hillary's politics are any better or worse than Obama's- so far tObama just appears to be more civil. get all your friends out to vote! get anyone you know registered republican to get it changed so they can vote in their state's primary... and then vote! We are our own worst enemies- remember, Bush got RE elected, people didn't get enough the first time going! Ami

that Obama getting elected is more or less like the Berlin Wall coming down in terms of a classic photo op triumph over the forces of darkness. However, as we have seen, the fall of the Wall didn't bring paradise to Germany and it's not going to miraculously make our problems go away either. What it might do is give us a better shot at fixing them, and certainly of getting our own lives back free of surveillance, intimidation, and infringement of our liberties.

To Greg SC & Johnman - don't sweat it so much. I understand some worry - it's all different. But read: http://www.barackobama.com/pdf/taxes/Factsheet_Tax_Plan_FINAL.pdf My guess is things won't be exact, but we should all hold EVERY politician accountable. Finally - the whole socialism thing...get the @#(*$& over it. The lousy (but necessary) bailout that passed is more socialist than any program Obama wants to start. Actually, I am going to cautiously, and I mean cautiously, sit back and watch to see what this guy is up to. Will he surprise me and be a centrist leader? Well, he might, but my gut tells me the weird stuff will begin as soon as it looks like we are beginning to come out of this economy. Until the economy begins to perk, though, I think he will be careful not to cause it to worsen. Because now it is his, and his alone. The buck stops with the president. We found that out with Bush. In other words, the Dems had the house and senate the last 2 years, but all we kept hearing was "eight years of Bush," when in reality it was 6 years of Repubs, 2 years of Dems. So from this point on I do not want to hear any nonsense about George Bush, when it is Obama, and only Obama. Remember the Buck stops with the guy on top. So, how has Obama done the last two days? Well he drove the stock market down 10% for starters; it is, however, up a little today. In the long run we will see how businesses like it with this guy at the top. Greg SC

"Well he drove the stock market down 10% for starters".... Yeah, he marched right in there and said, "STOP BUYING NOW!" The market fluctuations are a result of a whole lotta stuff, not just the choice of president. Come on. Just because Bush got blamed for a lot of stuff, don't go aimlessly swinging. The economy is in the crapper LARGELY because of the Iraq War spenditure - as well as all the crap that the lovely Mr. Greenspan ol' Slick Willie left lingering around and W and his crew neglected to repair. It's a combined effort. I think things JUST MAY turn around when we stop spending 23gazillion dollars a minute in Iraq. hey Pap the 23 gazillion keeps me in beans and bullets, ha ha. yea this war deal is getting a little long I've been directly involved since 01.What year is it? Anyway seems like the markets all over the world are taken a dump, guess there all related. I think the Iraq Afghan spenditure is around 420 gazillion. And don't really think the people of these nations give a shit they suck off us as much as they can. Was reading some stuff in Stars and Stripes about how much the military, all brances spends on fuel to keep this deal going. i can't remember the exact numbers but it was in the bazillions, in a country with huge oil reserves who don't fund any of their own stuff. Thought wars would boost an economy, think that it did for awhile but now were at a stablization period in Iraq and is costing us a shit load and the people were helping don't chip in or give a flying f. We'll all see in a year or so when Iraq takes full control of there country it will turn back to a dictatorship and remain the asshole of the world. Pappy, Just wanted to give you a taste of the silliness we've heard from Obama during this past year. You'd think that George Bush ran the House, Senate, and Oval Office the way he was blamed for everything. But hey, I guess the buck stops with the guy on top. So since we heard how George Bush caused the stock market to crash, then we can assume that the market balked at the Obama win. Hey, fair is fair. Greg SC

I love these public roads I drive around on and public buildings - museums, aquariums, the public squares. Kids need public places to grow. It's one world now. And it has been since airtravel and tv blew open those doors. I think a lot of people all over the world think we need a new take on things. Let's get eachother's basic needs met. for the first time since 1964. We are one of the two states (Maine is the other) that will split their electoral college votes. Nebraskas's split is based on who wins in each of NE's 3 congressional districts. But our votes did count on the electoral college distribution, even though McCain took the state. Maine and Nebraska. I don't know how Maine does it. In Nebr the winner of the total popular vote gets 2 of the 5 electoral votes right away. Then the rest of those votes are awarded by who wins in each of our 3 congressional districts. Those 3 discricts are Lincoln (and surrounding area), Omaha (and surrounding area), and then the rest of rural Nebraka. So Obama won the Omaha area so he got 1 electoral college vote, and he was ahead in the Lincoln area but didn't prevail so McCain got 1 electoral vote, and then rural NE was overwhelminly McCain, so he then he got another vote. Nebraska's electoral vote total is McCain 4 and Obama 1. We almost carried the day in Lincoln for Obama and that would have been another vote, but we didn't quite make it. I am opposed to the electoral college but I believe that if the votes are split, then the process gets this republic a little closer to a democracy. But not close enough for me. Abolish the electoral college and popular vote should win the Presidency. Nebraska lesson and pontificating complete (for now). ;o} The Truth is realized in an instant, the act is practiced step by step.

As most of you know, Jim Martin is in a smear fest runoff election down here in Georgia. If Obama voters truly want change, we need to vote for Jim Martin for US Senate to give Barack the tools he needs to get things done. The GOP is pouring everthing they have into the state because they are scared to death that we will turn Georgia blue again. In fact McCain himself was in town last Thursday campaigning with Chambliss. I am attending the Bill Clinton/ Jim Martin event at Clark Atlanta University tomorrow. I am worried that after 6 years of Saxby Chambliss voting with W 90% of the time, voting against children's health care, wasting time making English the State's official language, etc, etc, we are going to have a tough time getting out the vote for a runoff. Any possitive vibes are apprectiated. http://www.martinforsenate.com/ Peace - David

Can I Be A Deadhead and Still Think Big Government is Bad? I was thinking back to the not-so halcyon days of my youth. I don't remember my older hippy friends being pro-government. It was more a movement of mutual support, helping each other in small communes and getting back to a less-is-more mentality (if we ever really 'had' that). Now that I'm a hard working special education teacher, can I still be a Deadhead and not necessarily believe in and trust the Democratic party or the Obama presidency until I see actual decisions made, and acknowlegement of the responsibility for the good and bad results? I find it a bit hard to fathom that folks who dance to the lyrics "spinning a set the stars through which the tattered tales of axis roll about the waxen wind of never set to motion in the unbecoming round about the reason hardly matters nor the wise through which the stars were set in spin" find my simple little post too obtuse to interpret in light of emerging events on a thread about politricks. I apologize for being too obtuse. Let me rephrase it - Øbama, The Øne chosen by (I'm guesstimating) more than 95% of the posters on this thread, is turning out to be a crooked dealer, surrounded by crooked dealers, whose crookedness was ignored and even denied by an obsequious press. They will now be given carte blanche to dismantle the foundations of this nation - economic foundations, spiritual foundations, and cultural foundations - the only nation on earth that could provide the economic, spiritual and cultural bubble required to spawn The Grateful Dead. I am sorry that the remaining members of the Grateful Dead saw fit to get involved. Is that clearer? Again, I apologize for being obtuse. Politics is a dirty business; not a nice, kind or positive business. If the reality of that is too hard too handle, than this web site may not have been the place to introduce a realm that engenders characters like Øbama and McCain. As the layers of the Øbama Ønion are peeled away, we may all be just a wee bit sorry The Boys played a fundraiser for The Øne. ' course, that may involve far too many (or not enough) chemicals..........and why is it that when people have opinions that vary from the opinions of others, they are assumed to be brain-washed?......could be the "dry cleaning" thing..or......uh........ok, ok....i'll stop

and that is that we're gonna be sorry. But do not agree that will be due to Obama. Think the economy in 2009 is going to be worse, and not better-and has nothing to do with Obama just yet.********************************** Don't part with your illusions. Why don't you spit out what you are insinuating? If you really have a point to prove tell us what it is. You are posting vagueness and innuendo because whatever your accusations are, (which we don't even know) apppear to have no factual basis at this time to back them up. This is an old propaganda trick. Create unrest, uneasiness, discontent, distrust without facts to back what you say. I call your bluff. Prove it. By the way what is the problem with the O on your computer? If the doors of perception were cleansed, everything would appear to man as it is, infinite. William Blake
