I'm sorry that I got you in such a tizzy! First I spoke about music and the Family being my passion but you must have misunderstood that. I have been enjoying this website for ten years as jerry_garcia71 but when I speak up to people that I care about how I feel, I am somehow deemed unworthy and under attack. It is terribly sad that you have no hope that nothing will ever change and you have no affect on the world. Let me share a little nugget with you about a Deadhead I met at RFK Stadium one summer at a show: He had hope, he thought that he could help the world. He was optimistic and wasn't ready to surrender. He was elected Vice President of the United States for 8 years and later won the popular vote to be our President. He has recently won the Nobel Peace Prize because he is currently engaging world environmental policy and trying to save the health of our planet. Yes, Al Gore is driving that train that you GRTUD are content to be a passenger on.

There is an absolute difference between saying for whom someone would vote, in an election and an endorsement. Needless to say, when one hitches their wagon to a political pony, for whatever reason, that line is no longer blurred. In this instance, jerry_garcia71 seems to be here for the sole purpose of political advertisement. Furthermore, I feel the wording of the two posts I've read, by this person, insinuates by saying, "the Dead community..." that you speak for me, which you do not. Equally grating is the notion that you speak on behalf of Mr. Obama ("our support might earn us a wink and nod in the future!"). Comments such as these, won't earn any endearment from me. If you were to speak about music, ANY MUSIC, I'd at least feel some endearment to you regardless of political affiliation, which I do not. This fact, in no way makes me happy. If you really believe in your candidate as a person that will commit to changing the social stagnation, in this country, brought on by decades of partisan pissing contests and an "all you can take" buffet mentality by the duelopoly system of political sharing when it comes to tax money, why not come here and ask about the things that we care about, instead of grandstanding? I've seen my share of political climates in this country come and go, but what I haven't seen is a politician that will really listen to the working class. Tom Wolfe said he was never interested in covering American politics because no matter who gets elected, "The American political system is like a train - it stays on the same tracks, no matter who's driving." In other words, the real issues are never allowed to be talked about, in an open forum. That notion isn't complicity btw, it's reality and one needn't be an elected official to help start change along those lines, unless they haven't any other "day job". Eventually, no matter who wins an election, any election, reality will replace fantasy and then... "There's just the payment left and broken dreams."

A few years ago I was sitting with my son in a diner having breakfast somewhere in N California. A dude from another table comes over. He is middle aged, pencil thin, black jeans, white shirt, bootlace tie 'Say you folks ain't from round here, what kind of accent is that?' 'We're from England' Pause 'You got socialists over there doncha?' 'Yep' 'You one of them?' 'I suppose I am' 'Huh. Well you folks take care now' ' Dude walks back to his table and just sits and stares continually and evilly at us. Living right across the Big River from that political hotbed of Iowa, I have already been bombarded with more TV ads and news in the local papers than I can shake a 'hanging chad' at. Wake me when it's over......On the other hand, I'm a regular dude. I work an avg of 65 hrs a week and I kick ass at a job that I enjoy more than I dread. My hard work this year made me more than I needed to make, but I am by NO means a rich guy. I'm not sure which candidate speaks to me. The righties are too preoccupied with religion for me to take seriously most of the time while the lefties want to create a system of wealth redistribution that punishes hard work and smells of socialism. This two party system leaves little room for choice. I'm into personal responsibility, good decision making and enjoying life, I'm not sure which party is for me. The funny thing is, if JFK were running for president in '08, he would probably be a republican. His job is to shed light, not to master...

I am very pleased with last night’s results. I look forward to a time when I can not only stand to sit through a presidential speech, but I look forward to hearing some intellectually inspiring rhetoric. Now that I have had time to analyze what each candidate has to give, I feel kind of relieved. Hillary - Although I like Hillary overall, I have not been able to get past her abysmal voting record over the last couple of years. I am happy that if the nomination follows suit, the Republican witch hunt will be headed off before it begins. I still feel like her experience as first lady is invaluable. Her experience with healthcare reform was doomed to failure due to the short time line and unsupportive Republican Congress at the time. She has a ton of international diplomatic experience. Besides I get the warm and fuzzys when I think about Bill being back in the White House. Edwards – I like Edwards. He is the only candidate who has focused on the poor. As much as the media painted it the other way, I feel like he did an excellent job in the debates with Cheney in ’04. Obama – I have loved Obama since his speech at the Democratic Convention. He is definitely the face of change. He is black with a very young family. He is not corrupted by decades in politics. I am very curious who he would choose as his running mate should he win. Hillary is from a Blue state (No gain in votes), Edwards would be good but I don’t know if he would go second fiddle this time around, but my choice would be either Richardson or Biden or possibly a third party person like Bloomberg or McCain if he switched over (although he will probably die of old age soon) On a more serious note, a coleague at work wrote: " I was too young to vote for Jack Kennedy, but was for Bobby and was devastated when he was assassinated. When I heard Obama at the Democratic Convention, and have listened to him since then, I knew he was the right candidate at the right time. I’m pleased." This lead me to the following thoughts: "Knock on wood, Obama is inspirational enough to meet the same fate as Bobby, John and MLK. I hope I am wrong about that. Thankfully, I think we are in a different time now, although Bush and his cronies have tried their best to recreate the same tumultuous direction for our society. (I can’t help having an ominous feeling in my gut when I think of all the correlations – Vietnam – Iraq, Bush Crimes – Nixon Crimes, Assaults on our civil liberties, The speaking styles of MLK and Obama, the controlling of dissenting voices at the conventions [Free speech zones vs Miami Riots] The expiration of the assault weapons ban , etc, etc) I truly feel like the main reason there has not been civil disobedience this time around is the technology of today. People are able to express themselves and connect with other equally frustrated people enough through the internet that it is hard to let it bubble over in large gatherings where that is the only way to let your voice be heard. Anyway, I feel like our country has been in a state of Post Traumatic Stress Syndrome with the war, 9/11 and the last two presidential elections. That is part of the reason I get so outspoken some times. I want to get it all out there now so I can get beyond it in November." Peace

"we allowed the Bush Administration to slide into power" and "Nobody showed up to vote in 2004". Please no absolutes. I did not empower or allow the Bush Administration, I fought it and still do and I voted in 2004 just as I have every other year since I was 18. Peace. I appreciate the efforts of Marye at Dead.net to make a little room here for politics. As I was saying earlier, to me the Grateful Dead culture that I have loved being a part of for many years has historically been interested in politics and the environment. The music and the Family is my passion; but being politically active is protection of my freedom of expression. Freedom ain't free. I love to be carefree but folks we have to always keep one eye on The Man! I hear alot of negativity from Heads that choose to be complacent politically because "all politicians are crooked and nothings going to change anyway". But I feel complacency has made the world a worse place because we allowed the Bush Administration to slide into power. As Deadheads we were given a gift to make the world a better place. We spread joy. None of the candidates for president this year are perfect; but we must pick the lesser of two evils. Nobody showed up to vote in 2004 and the world is a much sadder place because of that. Turn on your love light this year and just vote for who you feel is best. Right now I feel Barack Obama is our best choice to make the world a better place. I often think about how I can help make the world a better place. I'm not pretending to know all the answers but I'm just doing my best. Last year I started an internet group "Deadheads for Obama" located at: DeadheadsForObama@groups.barackobama.com I'm trying to show Barack that the Dead Community is interested in peace, logic, and compassion like he is. Who knows, our support might earn us a wink and nod in the future! Thanks again and may you have a safe and happy new year.

that Obama getting elected is more or less like the Berlin Wall coming down in terms of a classic photo op triumph over the forces of darkness. However, as we have seen, the fall of the Wall didn't bring paradise to Germany and it's not going to miraculously make our problems go away either. What it might do is give us a better shot at fixing them, and certainly of getting our own lives back free of surveillance, intimidation, and infringement of our liberties.

To Greg SC & Johnman - don't sweat it so much. I understand some worry - it's all different. But read: http://www.barackobama.com/pdf/taxes/Factsheet_Tax_Plan_FINAL.pdf My guess is things won't be exact, but we should all hold EVERY politician accountable. Finally - the whole socialism thing...get the @#(*$& over it. The lousy (but necessary) bailout that passed is more socialist than any program Obama wants to start. He is not for National Health Care (that was Hillary, for those paying attention). Actually, I am going to cautiously, and I mean cautiously, sit back and watch to see what this guy is up to. Will he surprise me and be a centrist leader? Well, he might, but my gut tells me the weird stuff will begin as soon as it looks like we are beginning to come out of this economy. Until the economy begins to perk, though, I think he will be careful not to cause it to worsen. Because now it is his, and his alone. The buck stops with the president. We found that out with Bush. In other words, the Dems had the house and senate the last 2 years, but all we kept hearing was "eight years of Bush," when in reality it was 6 years of Repubs, 2 years of Dems. So from this point on I do not want to hear any nonsense about George Bush, when it is Obama, and only Obama. Remember the Buck stops with the guy on top. So, how has Obama done the last two days? Well he drove the stock market down 10% for starters; it is, however, up a little today. In the long run we will see how businesses like it with this guy at the top. Greg SC

"Well he drove the stock market down 10% for starters".... Yeah, he marched right in there and said, "STOP BUYING NOW!" The market fluctuations are a result of a whole lotta stuff, not just the choice of president. Come on. Just because Bush got blamed for a lot of stuff, don't go aimlessly swinging. The economy is in the crapper LARGELY because of the Iraq War spenditure - as well as all the crap that the lovely Mr. Greenspan ol' Slick Willie left lingering around and W and his crew neglected to repair. It's a combined effort. I think things JUST MAY turn around when we stop spending 23gazillion dollars a minute in Iraq. Remember the Current Occupant has 73 more days to spend in Washington, D.C. After President-elect Obama moves into the White House, the Texas Tumblweed can return to lassoing armadillos. Meanwhile, take advantage of good buying opportunities in the market: Sirius, GE, Ford, GM, PG. hey Pap the 23 gazillion keeps me in beans and bullets, ha ha. yea this war deal is getting a little long I've been directly involved since 01.What year is it? Anyway seems like the markets all over the world are taken a dump, guess there all related. I think the Iraq Afghan spenditure is around 420 gazillion. And don't really think the people of these nations give a shit they suck off us as much as they can. Was reading some stuff in Stars and Stripes about how much the military, all brances spends on fuel to keep this deal going. i can't remember the exact numbers but it was in the bazillions, in a country with huge oil reserves who don't fund any of their own stuff. Thought wars would boost an economy, think that it did for awhile but now were at a stablization period in Iraq and is costing us a shit load and the people were helping don't chip in or give a flying f. We'll all see in a year or so when Iraq takes full control of there country it will turn back to a dictatorship and remain the asshole of the world. Ted. believe he'll be going back to do some goat roping too.

Pappy, Just wanted to give you a taste of the silliness we've heard from Obama during this past year. You'd think that George Bush ran the House, Senate, and Oval Office the way he was blamed for everything. But hey, I guess the buck stops with the guy on top. So since we heard how George Bush caused the stock market to crash, then we can assume that the market balked at the Obama win. Hey, fair is fair. Greg SC

I happen to love all that social stuff. I go to the church of the public library. I love social programs (Public Health has been there for me), public parks and beaches. I love these public roads I drive around on and public buildings - museums, aquariums, the public squares. Kids need public places to grow. It's one world now. And it has been since airtravel and tv blew open those doors. I think a lot of people all over the world think we need a new take on things. Let's get eachother's basic needs met. for the first time since 1964. We are one of the two states (Maine is the other) that will split their electoral college votes. Nebraskas's split is based on who wins in each of NE's 3 congressional districts. But our votes did count on the electoral college distribution, even though McCain took the state. Maine and Nebraska. I don't know how Maine does it. In Nebr the winner of the total popular vote gets 2 of the 5 electoral votes right away. Then the rest of those votes are awarded by who wins in each of our 3 congressional districts. Those 3 discricts are Lincoln (and surrounding area), Omaha (and surrounding area), and then the rest of rural Nebraka. So Obama won the Omaha area so he got 1 electoral college vote, and he was ahead in the Lincoln area but didn't prevail so McCain got 1 electoral vote, and then rural NE was overwhelminly McCain, so he then he got another vote. Nebraska's electoral vote total is McCain 4 and Obama 1. We almost carried the day in Lincoln for Obama and that would have been another vote, but we didn't quite make it. I am opposed to the electoral college but I believe that if the votes are split, then the process gets this republic a little closer to a democracy. But not close enough for me. Abolish the electoral college and popular vote should win the Presidency. Nebraska lesson and pontificating complete (for now). ;o} The Truth is realized in an instant, the act is practiced step by step.

As most of you know, Jim Martin is in a smear fest runoff election down here in Georgia. If Obama voters truly want change, we need to vote for Jim Martin for US Senate to give Barack the tools he needs to get things done. The GOP is pouring everthing they have into the state because they are scared to death that we will turn Georgia blue again. In fact McCain himself was in town last Thursday campaigning with Chambliss. I am attending the Bill Clinton/ Jim Martin event at Clark Atlanta University tomorrow. I am worried that after 6 years of Saxby Chambliss voting with W 90% of the time, voting against children's health care, wasting time making English the State's official language, etc, etc, we are going to have a tough time getting out the vote for a runoff. Any possitive vibes are apprectiated. http://www.martinforsenate.com/ Peace - David

Can I Be A Deadhead and Still Think Big Government is Bad? I was thinking back to the not-so halcyon days of my youth. I don't remember my older hippy friends being pro-government. It was more a movement of mutual support, helping each other in small communes and getting back to a less-is-more mentality (if we ever really 'had' that). Now that I'm a hard working special education teacher, can I still be a Deadhead and not necessarily believe in and trust the Democratic party or the Obama presidency until I see actual decisions made, and acknowlegement of the responsibility for the good and bad results? I just don't see the answer to what ails us in politics, Democrat or Republican. You guys inclusive of people like me, too? Drewster58 "The Xeric Xenophile"

I find it a bit hard to fathom that folks who dance to the lyrics "spinning a set the stars through which the tattered tales of axis roll about the waxen wind of never set to motion in the unbecoming round about the reason hardly matters nor the wise through which the stars were set in spin" find my simple little post too obtuse to interpret in light of emerging events on a thread about politricks. I apologize for being too obtuse. Let me rephrase it - Øbama, The Øne chosen by (I'm guesstimating) more than 95% of the posters on this thread, is turning out to be a crooked dealer, surrounded by crooked dealers, whose crookedness was ignored and even denied by an obsequious press. They will now be given carte blanche to dismantle the foundations of this nation - economic foundations, spiritual foundations, and cultural foundations - the only nation on earth that could provide the economic, spiritual and cultural bubble required to spawn The Grateful Dead. I am sorry that the remaining members of the Grateful Dead saw fit to get involved. Is that clearer? Again, I apologize for being obtuse. Politics is a dirty business; not a nice, kind or positive business. If the reality of that is too hard too handle, than this web site may not have been the place to introduce a realm that engenders characters like Øbama and McCain. As the layers of the Øbama Ønion are peeled away, we may all be just a wee bit sorry The Boys played a fundraiser for The Øne. and that is that we're gonna be sorry. But do not agree that will be due to Obama. Think the economy in 2009 is going to be worse, and not better-and has nothing to do with Obama just yet.********************************** Don't part with your illusions. Why don't you spit out what you are insinuating? If you really have a point to prove tell us what it is. You are posting vagueness and innuendo because whatever your accusations are, (which we don't even know) apppear to have no factual basis at this time to back them up. This is an old propaganda trick. Create unrest, uneasiness, discontent, distrust without facts to back what you say. I call your bluff. Prove it. By the way what is the problem with the O on your computer? If the doors of perception were cleansed, everything would appear to man as it is, infinite. William Blake
