Grateful Dead

The '83 clip sounds great to me. Any show with a Brother Esau is splendid in my book. How about a Dave's Pick or two from '84? '83 through '88 is a significant gap in the Dead's history that represents arguably their most important era that is either or under-represented or nearly completely ignored. Speaking for myself, I get the '70s and even the '60s. There aren't many unreleased shows from those eras left that will break any new ground. Perhaps bringing back the download series will satisfy the more open-minded fans among us who want releases from EVERY era.

The second paragraph I found insightful. The thing I like about this '83 tape is that Phil seems to be coming through better that in some of the '82 tapes. Anyone know the source of the recordings? I thought I read somewhere that Silberman thought his tape of this or the second set was the 'best sounding recording' he ever made. I know I have a great AUD tape of it. Reviewer: Folkhippy - - August 8, 2013 Subject: Almost a Dave's Pick, if it weren't for the kick drum Dave Lemieux mentioned this show in a recent Q&A video interview. Many Deadheads complain that there has only been one release from '83 out of all the different DP/RT/DP series. David states that it isn't because he or his staff dislikes music from '83, it's the piss poor mixes of the two-track tapes which, despite the miracles of modern audio wizardry, can't be fixed. In the interview, David talks about an amazing show from '83 that is exceptional in all respects; however, in the mix, there is a major level issue with one of the kick drum mics. THIS IS THE SHOW! Listening to this tape, it is quite apparent that the left channel features about 30% band mix and 70% kick drum! TICK TICK TICK. It's incredibly annoying! Now I know what he was talking about. This is supposed to be one of the best shows from the early '80s, but all I can hear is that damn kick drum. Apparently, because these are two-track tapes, you can't go in and just 'turn the kick drum down.' It would wipe out the whole track, not just the kick. Too bad. If only Betty was still on board in '83 . . . What a year it was.

From an audiophile viewpoint, this '83 recording sounds far better than Dave's Pick #6, it's bonus disc and the last Record Store Day release.

I am pulling for an 83-84 release. Hopefully the comments from Rolling stone when Dave says he is immersed in 83-84 Dead will prove to be a sweet box for all to enjoy. That review just gives me a little insight as to what they are looking for. I guess ?

What a song. I ingested a cap and a big white stem drenched in electric blue stripes at the Bobby Acoustic show in Charlottesville, VA on 4/26/12. It was just enough to make the stage lights glow a little brighter! Bobby played Esau while I had the Joker grin!!! Good times!

I completely agree about how the 83 show was recorded and distributed....I mean krimeny christmas we can't hear Phil in all his glory without Billy's/Mickey's damn rhythm....BUT I must say, this is how I've always liked it. It was a damn good performance to boot. Granite, we all can't go throwing this stuff in Buy-able form. The best part of it all for me, is knowing the quirks and snafu's of the tape/cd/digi/mix/ROAD/SHOW/SITU AND being able to adjust accordingly....isn't that how we did it on the road? AND furthurmore, sometimes....just sometimes, or perhaps a plethora of times, that kick drum or phil bomb, or Jerry drool just hit you at the exact moment in time and space that you needed right then and there and in that car or van or apartment or house or forest or campsite or river....was the one really needed and were in-tuned too at the time and system you were listenin' to. Meaning: Besides run-on sentences with meaning...Sometimes, I really, really like the quirks of the tapes and recordings just the way they are. My four cents minus tre. ~Critter Oh and Johnny, although I won't be partaking in the Mickey way of doing things, not that I'm opposed to a little cap page. I will be seeing Ratdog and Bobby at Chicago Theater and Milwaukee in the next weekend. I am GONNA hear an ESAU and my ears are Looking Forward to it (~);-)

Such a sweet gem of a town...an oasis of sorts in the area, at least for me growing up in the Shenandoah Valley...VA is beautiful and will always be my home, but it ain't always everywhere for Lovers, and I always loved C-ville...24 minutes away on the Other Side o'Afton from Wayne'sWorld...and in many ways the Other Side of the Planet...but always a great place....a bit snooty-patoo and aristochristerfuss perhaps...but a liberal haven in a Conswervative Whirrrl.... Go UVA... Wahoowa! ps...i still remember being like 15 or 16 - before moving to Cali - and seeing a sweet Dylan-Steel Pulse show! at one of the University venues...whoa bro!

I too agree with Spacebrother's comments about the 80's While I think the band's acme was in the 70's in terms of consistently great performances, it is hard to believe that there are only 2 releasable shows in the timeframe from August '82 (Dick's Picks 32) until July '87 (VV4). I often return to the 70's as I love that decade the best--but it is a thrill to find a great show that I haven't heard or am generally unfamiliar with from the 80's, particularly the first half of the decade. The Atlanta release from Dave's Picks was a start, although that is a pretty well known show (but a great choice for those unfamiliar with it or biased against the time period). I also would like to see the return of the download series--take a page from the book of Furthur, Mule, Allmans and many others who offer all shows from a tour for download, scaled by quality/price. Finally, it seems that the 83-84 period would be well-suited to the original concept of the Road Trips series given the unevenness of tours and shows--cherry picking tours would work in this case (and I say that as a completist who greatly prefers complete shows).

If they offered this, I would buy every show.
