Epic!
My very first dead show at the age of 16 and it was epic to say the least, unfortunately it was also my last dead show. So very thankful that stars aligned and I’m able to have the memories I have from that night. I can honestly close my eyes and see Jerry jamming the night away like it was yesterday! What an impact.
“It’s okay to look back, just don’t stare”
Thirty years ago tonight I started what was to be my final run of Grateful Dead shows. I was thoroughly engaged and in the moment. I enjoyed ecstatic bliss on levels those three nights that approached some of the times seeing the Dead in the early 1970s. Here and now 30 years later the passage of time relentlessly marches on. I’ve seen the offshoot bands since the real thing and for all the intriguing moments of music ( Mickey Hart Band, Rhythm Devils, Phil Lesh and Friends, The Dead and oh yeah Dead and Company) it seemed as a willow the wisp flight of fancy trying to recreate youth. The sands of time don’t slow down. Reality check in aces and spades. But this evening, sure enough I’ll listen to February 19, 1995 Delta Center, Salt Lake City (birthplace of Neal Cassady) and look out across the great gulf of time and space. As I will listen to 2/20/95 and 2/21/95 the next two days.
So as an old dear friend from Taos Pueblo who died last year said a couple summers ago. “It’s okay to look back, just don’t stare”.
