sadly, its not a lucrative business to defend deadheads. Thats why lawyers dont already have em all solicited, like they jump at you if you're accused of a crime and have money. I mean, they have signs all over if you need legal help for your DUI. If you were driving your car, they know you have some dough. Who wants to volunteer for a plea bargain when there's no money? Lets face it, the system is designed to completely discriminate against poor folks. And if you just got popped with quantity, you probably don't have money if you even did before. and one day, the world will recognize (if it hasnt already) that how our country has locked up Deadheads, for nonviolent pursuit of our dionysian religion, is an injustice. One day it will be viewed the same way as laws that persecute against homosexuality and other personal forms of behavior that don't hurt other people. because what this is, is religious persecution. in a way. well, at least you need something to believe in right? Here in our community, weve got it al, so THANK you everyone, from the band and the crew to the Whart Rats to those who pursue rapturous abandon in the total experience of losing yourself through psychedelic drugs and music. The great thing about this community is that the sole bonding glue has always been MUSIC. That's the one thing that holds it all together. That, and our prevailing philosophy: a combination of the golden rule and the concept of total freedom. This is America. Your mind, your soul, your spirit, these are yours and yours alone to give to the vision of destiny that you please. We will not tell you how to live your life. You may get help when you need it. You may need to help yourself. Here, in our circle, everything happens. There's too much divergence for seeemingly anything to hold it together.... but the MUSIC.... We NEED to hold together, people, to survive. Maybe we could define ourselves, protect ourselves, legally. Just a thought. Certainly no philosophy could protect our freedom in the current system.... what would be the classification? It has to be more serious than bob dobbs but what, what could we be? Are we just a freak of nature? Is our "experiment" in group consciousness and music just a little blip on the map of a history of persecution? Is this our one shot at getting it together? If so we gotta get it together, people, join together in our love for this music, get together whenever it's happening. I hope folks have written to the people who are incarcerated. I remember this from the back of Relix and I wrote a letter once many years ago and I wish I could remember who it was even to :) Reading about more folks today, two decades later it is really continuing to bum me out but I send my prayers and thoughts to the families and friends of those incarcerated, because they are doing time too. And I'm going to get to writing another letter. Love and Blessings, keep that Fire burning in your heart, because We are It, We are on our own...

hey, i just got back in town after being sent to state prison for violating my dui program. i am almost home now after 15 months of bullshit. this page on the forums just blew my mind. yes, please keep all those people in your hearts and minds and prayers or whatever because prison is a very lonely, ugly, terrible place. i missed all my friends here on the site, but had no real way of letting you all know where i was or that i was even alive. this is a wonderful thing. i also suggest that anyone who knows anyone that is locked up, post their info so they can get some mail. i would get so bummed when the C.O. would go by my cell and i had no mail coming in. that is a very lonely crappy feeling. don't forget them while they are away. they need all the support we can give 'em. peace nothing left to do but smile, smile, smile

there are Tens of thousands people in the USA locked up for non-violent first offender crimes.many of them simply stepped into a trap set up by the DEA,others where at the wrong time at the wrong place, but as anyone knows the mandatory minimum sentencing has sent these people into jail for tens of years, sometimes for life.IF YOU KNOW ANYBODY WHO IS LOCKED UP,THAN YOU CAN PUT HIS PRISON ADRESS HERE (with his 100% agreement,of course)ON THIS PAGE! AND ANYONE WHO WANTS TO SEND A LITTLE LIGHT TO A DEAD-HEAD LOCKED UP IN HELL ,THAN YOU CAN DO SO.NEVER FORGET,THAT FOR EVERY BROTHER AND SISTER WHO IS IN PRISON,SOMEONE ELSE IS FREE.....

AS FAR AS I KNOW THERE AINT NO CHATROOMS,COMPUTERS AND OTHER STUFF BESIDE A TELEPHONE IN PRISON.SO TO HELP A PERSON GETTING INTO CONTACT WITH THE OUTER WORLD MEANS PUT HIS ADRESS ON THIS PAGE AND THAN LET THE PEOPLE DECIDE IF THEY WANT TO SEND A LITTLE LIGHT BY A HANDWRITTEN LETTER.I MIGHT REPEAT MYSELF,BUT THE ONES WHO ARE SITTING IN ARE THE ONES WHO CUT THE SNITCH-CHAIN..AND NOW THEY PAY THE PRICE.THIS CAMPAIGN IS NOT MY IDEA,IT WAS STARTED BY A SPECIAL EDITION OF RELIX IN THE EARLY 90S,CALLED:HEADS BEHIND BARS....ONLY WRITTEN LETTERS CAN BRING A LITTLE LIGHT INTO THE HELLHOLES WHERE OUR FELLOW DHs MIGHT SERVE THE REST OF THEIR LIVES!!!!!!!!!!!!

So here is a lil bit about his story. My brother Troy, who is one of use and one of the kindest souls you will ever meet.He would consider you family the second he meet you and would give you the shirt off his back and the sneakers off his feet when he meet you if you needed them.He shares the love for the Grateful Dead as we all do. Him and his girl friend were set up buy someone they thought was there friend, this person had gottin busted with some LSD.The cops told him if he would help them that he would go free. The kid agreed to help them, and set up three buys with a undercover dea enforcment officer. The officer got a warent and the apartment was raided.A lil over a half gram of LSD was found.Troy being the person he is tried to claim it all for his own,so Tyra(his girl) would not get into any trouble. The cops did not want to hear that. They both were charged and convicted.Since they would not be come RATS,NARCS or not set any one else up under the promise of a "LESSER SENTENCE" he recievd 13 years and her 12. They are both just a few years into this sentence and though they are doing as good as they both can be under this BS.They are missing the scene and family and music terrably so.And not surprising that many ppl have not writtin or tried to do anything for them.I am not askin for any one to give money or buy them anything but it would mean so much to them, and what we take for granted every day they do not have,If any one even if it is just one person could take two or three min. to write a letter aboutr the familer things that they so miss(music) I am sure that it would mean the world to them.Just to let them know that there are kind ppl that even though they might not know still care. There are way to many of are brothers and sisters in prison for non violent crimes. And are govrnmnt spends way to much $ every year on keeping these ppl locked up while the real crimanls walk free (MUDERS,RAPISTS,MOLESTERS ECT...)sO IF YOU CAN FIND THE TIME TO WRITE JUST A SIMPLE LETTER IT WOULD MEAN SO MUCH MORE THAN YOU COULD EVER IMAGIN. HIS PRISON ADDY: TROY RICHARD WILLIAMS #A527-230 P.O. BOX 7010,UNIT 8A, CELL 263 CHILLICOTHE, OH ,45601 He also asked me for some photographs of the good old days.If you have any pictures of the boys(Jerry,Bobby,Phil,Billy,Mickey,Brent,Pig,Donna,Keith) That you could spare.(he can receive three per letter) it would MAKE HIS YEAR and his time a LIL BRIGHTER.Also any pics of the lot scene. He says he has no one in there to relate to (no deadheads)witch in his word"is kinda a good thing cause that means they are not locked up" so this would help more then you could no. If you do write to him just tell him that you got his addy from me~~~Bear~~~ I will post Tyra's addy soon as recieve it.PLEASE SHOW SOME LOVE AND TAKE TWO OR THREE MIN. TO WRITE .WHAT TAKES YOU JUST MOMENTS WILL GIVE HIM A SMILE FOR WEEKS. And remember that even though you might not no him we all share the same thing incommen (The Grateful mother frickin Dead)

be careful what you post ... with this kind of imformation it would not be dificult to hack into the prisons computers .. before you know it your freinds are out of jail and they find their identity stolen... no credit, warrents for stuff they did not do ect..ect .. should I go on ...and why does a person in a foreign land worry so much about American inmates ? something is wrong here ...this also seems to be scaring people away from the famillies forum .. just be carefull folks ....

there is nothing wrong with Frankly worrying about American inmates, any more than there was something wrong with us cheering the demonstrators in Wenceslas Square back in the day. That said, yes, I agree about posting personal information here. There's good and bad, and no easy answers, but people can make their own decision on the subject.

Why does a person in a foreign land listen to american music?because that person might like it! and why does he care about american inmates.like i wrote above this campaign was started in the days when RELIX was still a 100% DH-mag.they made a special edition about this problem and there where tons of adresses from people sitting in.a person who is in jail for who dont know how long is in every federal computer,...or you are afraid that i might steal regular US-prisoners out of their cells?P.S:i tried to explain it all above......

this is a pure american organisation, which trys to help people who were locked up for incredible times.they have the cases, the names and the stories which led to the incarceration of these poor souls.hey stu, im a DH so i posted the idea of helping some of the brothers and sisters simply by writing them, on the Dead-net.seems logical,no....?

Stuman!! What kind of question is that "why does a person in a foreign land worry so much about inmates?" I think you owe Frankly an apology for that nasty bit of suspicious mind, about a very good and humanitarian idea.********************************** Don't part with your illusions. Identity`s are stolen all the time , Badger , TL, i think you took this in the wrong context. and look at Frankly`s post , the type and font is completley different ,he never writes in ALL CAPS , i beleive i have good reason for suspition.. now if you have freinds or familly in prison and they would like to have some pleasent mail , i think their names and addressess should be relay`d via PM`s . for their own protection ..can you imagine coming out of prison and being stalked by anti-drug people or finding that someone else has a drives liscens in their name . or apply for credit and have bad credit even though they have been in prison for years and years . having bank accounts and bad cheks being writen , then the arrest warrents start , for something that they did NOT do . just think about it , thats it just think about it .. protect the ones who can`t protect themselves...

..Frankly the suspicious foreigner has set this thing up so he can steal the identities of prisoners? I just checked and there are loads of websites where inmates openly post their names and prison addresses so people can write to them. I agree 100% with the need to be cautious and not do anything without the permission of the inmates, but I really don't think Frankly has bad intentions.

Come on brother!! Stuman, you should not worry, as the information that has been posted about Troy (and might be posted about other inmates in the future) is public information that can be found many different ways. Inmate information is not considered private, and so can be found on the internet or with a simple phone call to any facility. Having somebody's name is not enough to steal an identity. Having somebody's prison address will definitely not do it, as credit card companies aren't likely to extend credit to someone in prison. So, please, don't worry, if your family in prison wants letters written to them, posting their address here will not bring harm to their credit in the future.

Mark was into some pretty, petty stupid shit. His karma got way shitty down Virginia Beach way and the bubble finally popped in a 7/11 where he got nailed shoplifting a carton of smokes. He had a a plastic fork or some such stupid shit on him and waved it in the general direction of the clerk who was going to detain him. When The Man whistled up in his cop shop Mark was dead meat. He could have plead out with time served but for some ridiculous reason he decided he wanted a jury trial. The judge laughed at him after the guilty verdict and gave him 13 years like he was handing out a lollipop. Mark did 13 years in a _____ jail full of loonies. It was the main distribution point for drugs in three counties, from the inside! He got gang raped because he didn't join a gang and had no protection. He got Hep C and other medical problems that wern't treated worth crap. The only reason he made it was because he could pick against the spread in all 4 major sports and he became the book who made the cards and set the line and held the cash. Nobody screwed with him after that. So he did his 13 and got out but he ain't a whole man anymore. Mark is living on the street this winter in_____ and Crohn's disease is kicking his ass. If anybody could send some love and light his way it would be much appreciated, I offered my place to crash and even to pay for some shows for him but he just wants to do his 12 step line dance. I hope he makes it through the winter.... Thanks for whatever you can menatlly do for a poor, down-and-out brother.

sorry Evestar,i just read your post and than my reaction to it which was a little harsh, because i perfectly see your point of Hundreds of thousands bein spend for the fun-side of a concert visit, but barely any for them poor dudes who stepped into uncle sams iron traps.well,but...who would be the one to take care of such a pool of money which should be used for legal help. And how to avoid that a good percentage of such donations disappears in the administrative costs for a project like this. You see questions over questions.....;[ But i remember that the GOGD used to give a not negligable part of dollars to the REX Foundation which served as a gathering place for some people who where personally touched by this problem [for ex. Mothers against mandatory minimums, and others..],so maybe they are still doin this today. It is just a question of getting oneself informed...!!!!!!As for our DH buddies in jail,..i think that most of them have families who fight a bitter battle against windmills to get their loved ones out,....so the conclusion is the same.If you have a friend who suffers like this do NOT forget about him.write him/her,because a letter coming with the wake up call is like a ray of sunshine entering your cell.Peace and Love to all of ya........................

... between being poor and black in a ghetto and being popped w/4 ounces of crack and being a rich, white corporate executive popped w/4 ounces of powder? It's all coke right? Wrong! The black guy gets roughed up during arrest and gets thrown into the worst hell-hole imaginable and takes forever to go before a judge. They may or may not get a phone call. They are denied or cannot pay bail. They remain in prison until a prosecuting attorney is forced by time constraints to get to the case and offer a plea bargain that the black has no choice but to take (the choice is the absolute max. should they plead not-guilty and go for a jury trial where they will be absolutely railroaded anyway). The white guy is taken through a back door, unhandcuffed to an unmarked car where he is transported to a station for processing. He calls a very good lawyer already on retainer who runs down and throws his bail. The guy might spend the afternoon in jail. Depending on how tight the case is against him, he probably pleads out to a charge of simple possession and for a first offence probably gets a suspended sentence, maybe a fine and maybe community service. He probably doesn't lose his job and when he goes back to work he probably gets twice as rich because everybody knows what he does for a sideline. ~ Oh ain't that America for you and me? ~ ~ Ain't that America? anyone sellin' any kind of white powder needs to be hammered, i don't care what their economic disposition is, that shit is baaaad juju, poison!! and anyone who commits a violent crime should have an extended stay also. that being said, why do we lock up the poor kid smokin' a joint, but let the rapists, and murderers, and pedophiles out?....makes no sense that i can see, or am i being too harsh?

again, i was just venting....still, i do think they need to release people who are locked up on stupid charges like pot possession, it would definitely decrease the prison population, which can't hurt and would certainly save a TON of money not to mention bettering the lives of those incarcerated.

''dont do the crime if you cant do the time''yes, very wise old sayin. And of course i agree that every brutalo dealer of i dont know what powders should stay in a cell together with a 300 pound 6 feet tall pedophile.but that is not really the point.if you look back to swans post there one can read that at a recent concert 31 DHs has been arrested.so the game is goin on and as Furthur will hit the road many more people might find themselves in very uncomfortable situations.i think there is no place for jokes here because the people this is about, might be sittin beside you at the gig, share a doobie and get busted with some more doobies afterwards.but that you might not notice....well,i am just a stupid eurohead and after all this aint my problem, because the slammed prisons are over the ocean!!!
