Some consider Spring 1990 the last great Grateful Dead tour. That it may be. In spite of outside difficulties and downsides, nothing could deter the Grateful Dead from crafting lightness from darkness. They were overwhelmingly triumphant in doing what they came to do, what they did best — forging powerful explorations in music. Yes, it was the music that would propel their legacy further, young fans joining the ranks with veteran Dead Heads, Jerry wondering "where do they keep coming from?" — a sentiment that still rings true today, a sentiment that offers up another opportunity for an exceptional release from a tour that serves as transcendental chapter in the Grateful Dead masterpiece.

With Spring 1990 (The Other One), you'll have the chance to explore another eight complete shows from this chapter, the band elevating their game to deliver inspired performances of concert staples (“Tennessee Jed” and “Sugar Magnolia”), exceptional covers (Dylan’s “When I Paint My Masterpiece” and the band’s last performance of the Beatles’ “Revolution”) and rare gems (the first “Loose Lucy” in 16 years) as well as many songs from Built To Last, which had been released the previous fall and would become the Dead’s final studio album. This disc is turning into a favorite. Being that I have DP 23 from 72 and SSDD, bookending those with the movie soundtrack in 74, this show from 1973 shows me a clear path between the other two dates.Of course things get really going on disc two with Playin. This is the tune that got me onboard so I really listen sharply to any version on the jam in it. I really enjoy the openness that happens here and then the rest of the disc continues in a like vein. Disc 3 stays strong for me as well. On some of my picks, disc 3 can get a little slow. Long stage sets will do that, but on this show it keeps the energy up and strong. Overall I really am glad I bought this DP to fill in some holes I had in my DP collection. I find myself reaching for it more and more. This and #29 from 77 are getting lots of spins.0

deadegad - that was me :) I've been keeping a low profile in this thread - summer, busy, outside, no smartphone, etc. But whenever someone mentions that Alaska Box idea I have to chime in, 'cause I want TPTB to give me royalties when (WHEN) they produce it. Heh. While I'm here: No complaints at all about S90-2, and I love the S90 releases I have (Terrapin Limited, Dozin... ) but I'm not going to get it. I'm thrilled for those who are excited about this box! If money were no issue I would buy it, natch. I'm with those who don't want all the gee-gaws included, but again, not a complaint, just my reasoning. As somone else said, too many family obligations. I'm very happy they are releasing the Branford show (and I bet there was a lot of legal work on that one) and I'm getting that for sure. Also happy with the apparent trend toward downloads as an option (for those who want them). Finally, I don't get what is wrong with the fact that Spacebro shared his lack of funds in 2012, and in the same post told us that a friend had already helped him out. He wasn't asking for help back then, so why does it change things now? Sounds to me like he just doesn't have much money, period. And he ponies up for the DaP sub, possibly at greater relative cost that it is to others here. That thought line gives me more empathy with his frustration with the 70's bent of the DaP. (Sorry to speak for you Space, correct me if needed) Okay, back to summer activities and occasional lurking. Cheers

Rijo29 that is an admirable and worthy proposal which I would be happy to help with. Thanks for your input CocnutPhil. Some here are much better at reading the Tea Leaves and predicting what will come next. For the 50th Anniversary, your ideas are sound. An extra Dave's W/Extra bonus disc would be real treat. There are a lot in the 'know' in these parts about what is in the vault, but, I wonder if some shows have been recovered and kept secret. We heard about that great batch awhile back. With that in mind, some Primal Dead would be a perfect fit for the 50th although perhaps not enough for a box. If the Radio City/Warfield tapes were recovered that would, likewise, be a good fit for the 50th. Wall of Sound box? This could be more all consuming than who was in Dealy Plaza? GHW Bush! OMG! I would love to see an MSG NYC Fall 1979 box and have expounded and pontificated on that one frequently. Another poster suggested an Alaska 1980 "Land of the Midnight Sun" Box which is another good idea. Europe 1981 was suggested. There are some nice clips from Germany's "RockPalast" tv show from that tour on youtube.

Long overdue for Primal Dead. Historic Dead and Vintage Dead would make a great reissue. You know the two LPs released on the Sunflower label. Not sure if any of that material made it on Birth of the Dead or elsewhere.

I agree with Shakespeare. I have been picking my way through the complete Europe '72 and 4/11/72 stands out to me as being a very tight show. Almost surreal in that risks are taken in the way the band plays yet there aren't many flubs and the guys all end up back in the same place. The whole show is fantastic but for me starting with Playing through the end is the best. Cheers.

Nobody's Fault But Mine

I was just about to buy Terrapin 90 show today and now he's gone. Oh well. For those on the fence for Winterland 73' ,, get it now !! A must have. And dead.net might even include the bonus disc. when I ordered Winterland 77' it was surprisingly included although it is not a big deal since May 77' came out and has that portion covered. Europe 72' is hard to choose. I always picked shows that did not have a bulk of songs that were released on other formats. I own Europe 72' vol. 1 + (bonus material) and Vol. 2, Hundred Year Hall, Rockin Rhein, and Steppin Out. So that eliminated some good candidates for me basically all the England shows. Because I didn't want to pay for pieces or portions I already had. The two Dutch shows, Dave mentioned could have been a box if not for the entire tour release. I think both are 4 discs and excellent. If you want a Jam almost like no other go after 4-16-72. Donna was absent from this show, I love Donna, but some others are not too fond. 4-17-72 : Dark Star > Sugar Mag is worth the price of admission. Continues into Caution. 5-4-72 2nd night in Paris Dark Star beast And last but not least is 5-25-72, A fierce Playin in the Band. And no tracks represented on any other release, plus a Garcia triple threat with UJB > Wharf Rat > Dark Star.. I think I own 4-11 Newcastle 5-4 Paris May 10-11 May 18 Munich and May 25 It's a hard choice to just pick 2. Good luck !!

This is going to be nice. The music will play. I'm happy with this release, I'm sure it will sound awesome. I am surprised that another 1990 was released so soon. Deadheads were talking about the 80's so much that I believed it would be 80's. I'm sure some heads will be disappointed. i'm always glad just to get anything. 24 year old shows will entertaining for sure. I passed on the print, it's nice but just not for me. I bet it sales out in a few weeks at the most, 9000 copies is not really that many. Looking for hints on DP11. Peace

I like the Brandford show.....but I have a copy. As a 70's fan, will I listen to the rest enough to warrant buying this? Need some honest advice from the 80's and 90's guys (or the 70's guys) to help me make up my mind. I'm asking VERY sincerely and NOT trying to start up an ugly war of words! Just want HONEST feedback please. Peace.

I'm a 60s and 70s guy, but I loved the first box set

If you have the first box, I would say that's all you need. With the exception of 3/29/90, the better shows are on there. If you missed the first one, you might want to look into getting this one. The shows are well-played, but lack the power of the 6 from the first box.

Darn it!

Before I met a wonderful woman and got married and had a wonderful child I could have afforded this! I had to pass on the first Spring90 box and have to pass on this one too. The only show I knew I loved on the first box was 3/22, but this has two I love: 3/25 and (of course) 3/29! Sob...I desperately hope that in a year or so GDM will issue the Spring90 shows individually like they did with the E72 shows. I will jump on about half of them! Ooooh I want this!

a whopping € 41, sigh... I guess a completist's gotta do what a completist's gotta do, even if it means skipping eating out for a month. Anyway, apart from the 3/29 Marsalis set there is enough to savour. It may not be the years Spacebrother wants released, but at least the later years are not ignored. @Thursday's child: I'm basically a pre-hiatus fan, but especially if you missed out on 1990/the first one, you'll need this. Great playing, Brent & Jerry in top shape, some nice rearrangements (Death don't have no mercy, Loose Lucy) and, as far as I'm concerned, nice warm sound. It works whether you play it loudly or just as background music. Now for some October/November 72 or some 67 or some 70?

Comes to $30 per show....

....price is right. I'm probably on board. I too enjoy the Drumz/Space from this era....

Just purchase the 3/29 show by itself. Save the remainder of your money or pick up a few road trip shows from the 70s. Easy decision.

My sincere appreciation to TPTB for releasing the Branford show on it's own. The box looks fantastic but with a wife and two busy teenagers I just can't afford the big bucks on a 1990 release. I would LOVE to buy a couple of these shows a la carte, much the way the Europe '72 shows have been offered.Personally, I'd like to see more boxes in the $100 range but that's not meant to be a complaint, just input. There's a ton of great music in this box and cheers to those of you placing your orders; I'm getting a bit of a vicarious thrill knowing how much you will all enjoy it!

It's not Spring 1976?

I think on this one the quality of the recordings made this the reason for the box. I would much rather see a lot of other spring tours (such as 76) but the recording quality and vault availability are probably challenges. If you love this era, then congratulations and enjoy! I got the first box (no regrets) but I'd be lying if I said it gets a lot of rotation on my IPOD.

We were making DATs and Minidisc not T6 on this tour. Of course I will order and continue to wonder why Barton Hall is held Ransom when things go out at about $270,000 for the remaster and boxing per show. Anyways back to work on West High 6/21.

I love all Dead eras, with my favorite probably being the pre-hiatus time along with '77.But I could not pull the trigger on this fast enough! I loved the first '90 box and I am sure I will love this one also. To me, this is the last great tour and I cannot have too much of that. Order soon as it will disappear quickly I suspect. Rock on

Just what we need: another over-packaged behemoth. Seriously kids, just give us the music at a lower price and we'd still be happy. Does anybody really spend time fondling their "replica ticket stubs and backstage passes" while listening to 'Loser' from 3/24/90? (And I don't want to know if you do ...). I picked up the first one and truth be told, ditched the actual box once the discs found their new home on my shelf. As for the ephemera, it's out there . . . somewhere.

Another 90 Box?!?! How long did the the 1st 90 Box sell out in?

While Spring 1990 is great GD, I think that the GD legacy would be better served by a box set from an altogether different time period. Having said that, I'll still enjoy it. How long did it take the first Spring 90 box to sell out in? $$$ are tight at the moment.
