    Dick's Pick 3 and ruminations......
I downloaded Dick's Pick Number 3 a couple nights ago. Needless to say, I thoroughly have enjoyed it. It's hard to go wrong with anything from 1977. I've had the "To Terrapin" concert recorded on May 28th for a while. It's interesting to listen to one show that is only six days earlier and it sounds quite a bit different. I'm not that obsessed with sound quality. I'm old enough to remember the latter days of vinyl. In the early 70's records were thick and they were high quality. By the time I was a kid in the late 70's and early 80's the records were thin and they skipped constantly. I remember a copy of the Rolling Stones "Some Girls" that skipped. I do think vinyl has a warm feel to it though but I hated having to go back to the record store all the time because the album skipped. I also remember putting a penny on the needle to try to "groove" the record. I'm becoming a fan of gdradio.net. My subscription to XM Radio has lapsed. I think gdradio does a great job of mixing it up. What else have I been listening too? The Rolling Stones "Get Yer Ya Ya's Out" live from 1969. I also went on a Chris Cornell kick listening to a lot of Soundgarden, Temple of the Dog, and Audioslave. Was the Seattle grunge sound the last great burst for rock music? I don't know. I think some of Cornell's stuff ranks up there with all the other classic bands that happened to be lucky enough to be born earlier in time. I love the version of "Dancing in the Streets" on DP #3. Estimated Prophet and Eyes of the World are also stellar. I recently listened to one of the concerts I attended in person on the Archive. It made me realize how fast time goes. At 46 I'm neither old nor young. I am kind of in a strange middle ground. My back lets me know I'm not getting any younger. I am interested in some of the Europe '72 recordings. I have "100 Year Hall" and I think it kicks butt. Would love to hear from my old friend Matt J if he ever surfs these boards. He took me to my first show and was a "real deadhead". Peace.

Mose Alison "Sings" 2/13/57 Nice recent remaster. Stan Getz "Jazz Samba" 2/13/62 ***** Sonny Rollins "The Bridge" 2/13/63 If you've got it listen to it - too much! I'm going to wait on the 2/13 & 14/70 'til tomorrow - you know, Dick's 4 - most definitely one of the Dicks I know by number.

Just caught Umphrey's McGee set at Bonnaroo. I can't be the only fan here! also checked out Andrew Bird and the Hands of Glory. I've been a fan of his for a long time, but never seen him "live." Just an incredible musician. Another edit: Nikhil Banerjee playing sitar.

English Oceans This is becoming my favorite Truckers album, love the more balanced split between Hood songs and Cooley songs, including Cooley singing a Hood song. Plus there's this Space kind of thing to close out the album, very unexpected! Haven't posted here in a very long time, nice to see Mr Lard is still carrying the torch!

Today would have been dad's 86th - Coltrane's "Standard Coltrane", "Stardust" and "Bahia" 7/11/58. Fave tune of the nine from this session - "Something I Dreamed Last Night".Roland Kirk "Kirk's Works" Jack McDuff on B3.r 7/11/61 John Patton "Blue John" Similar vein as RRK. 7/11/63 Garcia Saunders discs 3 & 4 from Keystone mini-box. "Like a road" 7/11/73 Marshall Tucker "Where We All Belong" live stuff 7/11/74 Lucinda Williams "Car Wheels" companion live disc 7/11/98 jumped the gun on 7/11/69 - it's been a '69 Summer. Please, Dave, make the 11th bonus disc worthy!
