    12.03.79-12.05.79 Chicago run
Cannot go wrong with this Uptown run. 12.03.79. Second set is this Tapers favorite attended show and was prime "trading stock" back in the pre-digital days. FYI: Charlie Miller was a "black listed" tape trader back in the day.

    First show!
10/23/71 was my first show. Came in from Ann Arbor with housemates. Don't really remember much about it. Didn't even realize at the time that Pigpen was MIA. Thank gopod for recordings! Didn't go to the show the next night. Never made that mistake again, at least intentionally!

    Bertha> Good Lovin @ Duke University 4/12/78
Just came across sweet footage of the Dead's Duke University show in April '78 where Jerry lays down one of the best Bertha>Good Lovin pairings I've ever seen/heard. He kills it. Big Man moves his bones like you'll seldom see. Check it out...it's definitely worth a look: http://songmango.com/category/blog-street/on-the-bus/ Keep up the great work!

Welcome back to the Tapers' Section, where this week we'll stay in the 1970s with music from 1971, 1973 and 1979.

Our first stop this week is in Detroit on 10/23/71, when the Grateful Dead were playing their first tour Keith Godchaux on piano, without Pigpen, who was home resting. They opened the tour in Minneapolis on 10/19/71, followed by two shows in Chicago and two in Detroit, of which this was the first show. From this night, we have Casey Jones ; Me And My Uncle ; Tennessee Jed ; Sugar Magnolia ; Comes A Time.

From two years later and just a little bit west, we have music from 12/6/73 in Cleveland, featuring Bertha ; Mexicali Blues ; Loser ; Black Throated Wind ; They Love Each Other ; Beat It On Down The Line ; Deal ; El Paso ; Row Jimmy ; Greatest Story Ever Told.

And from six years later, and just a little bit further west, we have music from the first set of 12/5/79 in Chicago, featuring Alabama Getaway> Greatest Story Ever Told ; Dire Wolf ; Me And My Uncle > Big River; Cold Rain And Snow.

Be sure to stop by next week for more music from the vault.

Top class performances from this night. Here Comes Sunshine. Could be the best one. China > Rider. Super stuff. And the monster Dark Star over 43 minutes. This Dark Star is said to be the fraternal twin of 11-11-73. None of these are featured in this week, but They Love Each Other is mighty fine, the 1st 4 tracks is about 30 minutes. 1973 is almost unmatched pound for pound. I hope 73' , 76' , or 79-80 gets the next official release. November - December 1979 have some excellent stuff, great vibe, and are still jamming from some of the monster jams they had pulled off from 76-78.

Two of my personal favorites are on this weeks list, so I feel a post is in order. 12/6/73 is a monster show. Although some people don't enjoy the Dark Star from this show as much as some others from the fall of '73, pretty much everyone can agree that DS was fantastic on this tour. The entire ending of the show is just top notch (HC Sunshine, Big River, DS > Eyes > Stella, Sugar Mag. Definitely worth a stream at archive.org. 12/5/79 is also very lively. It's a month after the first of the Road Trips releases (11/5 & 6/79) and the new upgrades (SBD-Charlie Miller, Matrix-Hunter Seamons)are both great listens when compared to the previously-circulating copies. Brent had really found his way at this point, and the others were able to do their thing and know he would be in the right place. Nice choices!

Interesting vocal flub on Tenn Jed, reminds my of a latter-day instance in Built to Last, "Don't waste your face to save your breath"
