    Reflections on a Tour
Well, the Spring Tour 2009 is in the bag and was definitely one for the books! That's for sure. I know a lot of people might think the Dead are dead without certain members, and to be honest, the last couple of tours the Dead have done were great experiences for me, but I always felt like people were "sitting in" to fill some big shoes left behind. Even Warren, in 2004, felt like he was filling in. So I went to the LA Forum show expecting what we got in 04. Oh how wrong I was! That first throat grabbing chord of the show was like the band was saying to everyone in the Forum, "Listen up people! We're not f*#cking around here, we're here to play so let's get down to it!" And then BOOM, right into that unreal VLB groove, with a beat that you just had to move to. I have been doing tours since the late 70's/early 80's and to my ears, this band has never been better. On the one hand, they're tighter, yet they're also looser. I cant explain it, and honestly, that's about the best one can say about the Dead when they're really "on", "well, I cant explain it man, you just have to experience it..." ;) I've been keeping up with the Tour, listening to the shows online as the Tour progressed and the first half was just okay for me. But in LA it felt like something happened that night and everything the boys had been striving for just all fell into place that night. The Forum felt like an old school East Coast indoor arena show, complete with rabid, hardcore heads that were so grateful to be back at the party again. This was not a "best of" tour. This was a "here's who we are now, dig it" tour, and man did I love what I heard on the West Coast leg of this Tour. That night in LA, I realized that Warren and Jeff no longer felt like they were filling in for anyone anymore. The *were* the Dead just as much as Bobby, Phil, Billy or Mickey are. To me, the Dead has always been a band in flux. There have been so many iterations of them I've sort of lost count. So to those who lament a Jerryless Dead, all I can say is, you don't know what you're missing. Sure I miss Jerry and I miss Brent. But the Dead as they are right now? Sound the best I've ever heard them and they're not stale, they're still out there pushing the envelope and really, isn't that what this is all about? So yeah, I no longer get weepy when I hear Brokedown Palace or Ripple or Box of Rain. I just revel in the fact that I get to experience this amazing thing we call The Dead, once again. And I am truly Grateful. One final comment...It felt so great to experience Shakedown once again and the lot scenes in LA and the Gorge were excellent. Like some upthread said, I found my self also saying things, and using expressions that I haven't used in a long time...It felt good to have the tribe back together again, didn't it?!

My sentiments exactly. It was a bittersweet night. Very cool to stay up until 3 am+ listening to the whole show, with great interviews and commentary thrown in during the set break. But it was so great to back out there catching 4 shows, eagerly anticipating seeing the setlists of the shows I didn't catch each morning, listening to the downloads etc. I'm going to miss all that. I'm firmly in the camp that thinks the music has changed/evolved in a great way....new sounds, tunes I never thought I'd get to hear live, Rhythm Devils taking it to new heights each night etc etc. Warren and Jeff are as good as it gets in the post Jerry/Brent/Keith/Pigpen era, which is to say they're both amazing musicians who fit right into the fabric of the band and helped to make the magic each night. Jeff is a monster on the keys and Warren managed to channel the ghosts of Jerry/Brent/Pigpen in his paying and singing while keeping it new and fresh and his own as well. Branford's interview during the set break was spot on: they're older, they've each gone on to do new things are are coming at playing together from a new angle, pushing the boundaries and not just treading the worn path. By the time they got to the Gorge, they seem to have all completely melded musically and got the bugs all worked out. We may not see them out on the road two thirds of the year anymore....at least as The Dead, but I gotta think the fun they seemed to be having along with the embrace of the fans will pull them back for another go around or two down the road. And yes, it was really cool to hear Mickey thank the crew and bring them out onstage for some well deserved applause. I've seen them with Jerry from the early 80's onward, seen Phil and his band, Ratdog, the Dead 2003/4 and I can say I had as good a time at these shows and I've had at any. All different, all excellent and all the music of the Grateful Dead which is what it's all about. Thanks guys!

Not sure if this is the appropriate forum to use but I'm sure Marye will let me know. I just went to the GDTS TOO website for the first time in years to see about Ratdog tix and was amazed at what i found. It prompted me to send them the following... Please don't take offense. Just a little constructive criticism. It's been many years since I've visited your site. Back in the day I thought it was the greatest thing ever. The days of calling the hotline every day sometimes multiple times were over, but come on guy's, your site is really quite primitive by today's standards. To my dismay, when I tried to fill out the credit card form I discovered it wasn't interactive. I consider myself a caveman for not having a printer/copier/scanner combo, but times are tough. I don't even know where to find a fax machine. Aren't we supposed to be a paperless society by now? This planet needs all the trees she can produce. The decorative envelopes are still very cool, and should be an option, but how about an online interactive version of the envelope? I'm sure there are thousands of heads out there into web design who would be willing to collaborate and put something together for you. I'm not a designer myself but I'm willing to help wherever I can. Just something to consider. Peace and much thanks for all you do. So this would be a shout out to all of you webmasters out there if they are receptive. I know youre out there, a simple Google search for anything Dead related shows me there's some mad skills out there. I have not recieved a response yet, but when I do I'll post it.

thor369 - I'm still waiting for my two Chicago show downloads that were ordered May 3rd! Hope your wife is better. she is doing much better. it was an asthma and panic attack type combo, scary stuff. my CD isnt a download, it was a CD i paid for, at the show, they was recording off the mixing boards, and pressing official show CD's on the spot for $25, with show date, and place, on official The Dead CDs. it is why i dont want the download to replace my CD, my puter dont have good speakers, and i only listen to my CDs in my car, or my headset CD player. i cant reburn 1 on my puter, and it isnt the official CD with the printed faces on them.

Chicago was incredible... 20 years since since my love's and mine last show but with one more in tow - our 11 year old son whose favorite song right now is Throwing Stones. All with a different yet better spirit. The magic was back. It does remind me of reading a book where you don't understand the words and you go back later and understand it even more after life experience. I started reading the book long ago and loved it - and It means even more now. The shows brought smiles, healing and joy. Peace Mike P.S. Please Tour again !!!! - You are beautiful together ! Such a long long time to be gone and a short time to be there

Count me as another who tried the presale to no avail. Relying on MO now. I took a peek at stubhub. This is THE DAY of the presale, and already: 131 tickets for Albany 387 tickets for MSG and the prices are well above the $60 to $100 face. many of these $300 outrages will sell, meaning some wahoo makes money for doin nothin. many scalpers will be stuck with some tix, meaning empty seats at the show. a travesty. I say: make ALL TICKETS HELD at WILL CALL. this shuts down the scalpers.

I had every problem known to man this morning, and after 2.5 hours, got nothing. Now the Shoreline show is sold out and I'm pissed. Of course, when I saw the $475 VIP tickets, I knew we were in trouble. I saw Phil and Bobby on 12/30 and was fired up, and now I'm so pissed I don't think I'll ever be back. Total failure by the band and the sycophants that surround them.

I tried but to no avail - did MO instead. Checking Ebay - there's over 200 listings so far for tickets... F*ckers! I SAY EVERYONE SHOULD REPLY TO ALL THE EBAY LISTINGS THAT HAVE "OR BEST OFFER" AND BID $5 FOR THEM. If everyone did we would be a bit of pain the their ass just like they are to us.

OMG complain, complain, complain...complaining about the prices....complaining about the ticketing. Get over it. Prices go up...everything goes up! You can't seriously expect to pay the same prices as 15-20 years ago. So you might only get to see one show instead of three. It is better than none at all! Be happy they are touring. Thank you boys! See you in Chicago!

a lot of negativity in this thread.... floor seats were $98 for the show in DC and I think it's a pretty fair price for the music/experience you will get to witness & be a part off. Unfortunately, people make a living off of scalping tickets online for these high-demand shows...understandable for the public sales but for special pre-sales such as this one, they should most definitely hold the tickets at will call for the true fans & ones who will actually be attending the show~

It sounds to me like you all haven't been to a concert since the 80's. I saw Ratdog this summer and it cost about $70 for a ticket, don't you think it will be a bit more if the whole band gets back together?? Any time these old guys get back together the price is high. Hell we saw AC/DC this fall and that show was $120 a seat/ every seat even nose bleeds. When it is all said and done and you look back on it you aren't going to care how much money you spent. If you want to see some of these bands that's what it costs, stop crying about it. You can't go to a show for $15 anymore get with the times!! I will admit that the ticket purchasing was a joke but I have seen worse. If they would have used Ticketmaster for the pre-sale there wouldn't have been all these problems. But then you all would cry about Ticketmaster fees, so it's a no-win situation. "Everybody's braggin' and drinking that wine, I can tell the queen of diamonds by the way she shines. I can't go to a show for 15$ no more?? really? you sure? I thought most of these tix were like $10.04 or $9.80 I thought they was putting on some really cheap shows like back in the old daze. shit, looking here, I see people talking about 98$ ninety eight? or 100$ one hundred?!! did I read the tix sales thing wrong?? man oh man, my credit card is gonna be maxed out for the next 20 years... yuk yuk yuk... ( -; try that site again, folks, Nassau nose bleed opened up even though a few hours ago they said they didn't have 'em. still gonna try for MSG and Sat. nite in Philly like that again and again and again... for the deep pocket heads, the 350$ VIP for MSG also sold out. peace.

So what do you think are the odds they add some more shows in the Summer? I'm in Indianapolis and the closest show was the Chicago, which I was all set to go too, but then I realized that college finals are that week, so a no go there. I'm hoping at the very least they play Bonnaroo, which I plan on attending, and maybe add some shows in Indiana, Ohio, Kentucky, or Tennessee. Here is to hoping! I'm sure no one would be disappointed to see more dates.

After 25 years of following the GD all over, I see it as one thing: A real treat to have the opportunity to see the core remaining four. It isn't about price, difficulty, availability, which service sells the tix, etc. etc. If you want to be there and it is meant to be, you will. Heck, these guys are all heading to 70 yrs. old, what do you want, a free show? When do you think they will return? Find a way or fly away. My first show= $4.50 (11/6/70). My teen's (recently a self-proclaimed Deadhead) first show =$100.25 (4/18/09). The EXPERIENCE= PRICELESS!

pays off. I logged on 20 minutes early with no problem, but logged off to do some work, When I tried to log on again I had the same problems as everyone else, but this tour is IMPORTANT. The guys are all in their 60's (like me) so we never know when it will be the last tour and i will not take a chance on missing this and kept trying till I got on. I agree the tickets were a little pricey, but I feel they are worth it. Most big name groups are getting 30 - 50 for cheap seats and 50 - 100 for good seats so this wasn't too out of line. I did have a problem with paying top price for seats in the third level, although I would have taken anything. But I ran the numbers on cost of tickets, hotel, tee shirts and parking. and it was within about $20 of Deluxe travel package price which had seats on first level up, so I opted for that. Worth 20 bucks more (10 per ticket ) to me for good saeats. I hope we all get many more tours and hope to see some of ya in Charlottesville. PS I also agree on Ticketmaster being more user friendly, and their fees are usually less also.

bummers for those folks who missed out on tix, but I'd say keep trying, they're bound to release more. As for those folks bitching about prices... have you looked at what other bands charge these days? And I'm talking bands who tour every year. I don't need to be front row thanks, I know what these cats look like; $50 for a lawn or GA nosebleed's nothin' these days. As for me, I waited like Christmas morning for those pages to load up at noon and it paid off in the form of Chicago-Denver-Shoreline tour!!!! Can't afford it but I'll be there anyway, can't wait to see y'all!

There are tons of tickets available and more coming available every minute!! Yes, even lowers! All of your Philly heads who don't want to pay $100 for 400level, take a drive to WB. There are still good lowers there. If you keep checking the ticket site, you might get what you are looking for but you have to keep at it. I saw single floors for MSG a few minutes ago and then POOF! they were gone. Also floors for other shows and good lowers, but they only last a minute, obviously.

I was all set as well...credit card propped up, 4 windows open to Dead.net, email, deadtix and the forum lol. At 9 the system jammed and I couldn't get to dead.net, dead tix kept telling me there was an error...finally around 930 I got into the order section but was redirected cuz all the floor seats were gone. Finally around 10 I got 2 lodge, decent, and was done. It was pretty chaotic with the overwhelming amount of people on, but I just sat back and tried to be as patient as possible. What a nightmare that experience was. Ticketmaster catches a lot of grief but at least they work. After spending 15 minutes or so just getting logged on to the musicsomeday system I finally had a couple of the Chicago cheap seats in my cart but the site failed to load the checkout page correctly - I tried for 1/2 hour before I had to give up, that whole "I've got a job" thing. Came back a couple of hours later, logged back on and the tickets were still in my cart, and the checkout page loaded up correctly, took my address and credit card info, clicked confirm and was informed that the tickets were no longer available. Thanks for letting me know, morons. Empty the cart, try again and of course all the affordable seats are sold out. My guru, who is much more well-off than I, took over the ticket acquisition duty and got us a pair of the arm-and-a-leg tickets. He says the whole thing was a sign that Jerry wanted us to have good seats. Guru is holding me to attending that Cubs game, too. Guru is very demanding.
