Grateful Dead

Des Moines and Louisville both have mix problems at the start of the show. Perhaps a good audience recording will have Bertha for 6/16 and Jet on 6/18. Who was running the board back then: Owsley, Healey, Cantor, Kid? Remember, the Wall of Sound was up and certainly demanded a lot of tech attention.

Hey hey! So I would say that I have been hooked on the dead (and post-projects) for about three years. I know... not too long. I am just starting to sort through all the era's any thoughts about where to get started? I get the 70's (mostly later) are the hot years. But for some reason the 80's and even some of the 90's shows are speaking to me. I like exploration but only if it goes super far or I like good old fashioned solid shows. I love that Lindley Meadows from 75. Love it. Love that Boston Music Hall show from the winter of 76, forgot the month, but I love that sort of exploration. I also love the spectrum shows from 88... blah blah. I am more looking for suggestions from others to expand my horizons. I would love to trade, too. I was looking on tips for how to tour with the band. I've heard about all of these Deadheads who follow the band and know that people still do it for Furthur. But what I'm wondering is, how? I might want to do it and I want tips. How do you make an income and get tickets? How do you get from town-to-town? How do people afford food, etc.? Just how?

I have a friend who was given a Bear Head hookah. He was told that this belonged to a stage hand from the 1960's-70's and that a member of the Grateful Dead gave it to him. There are a couple of symbols in the pottery, but no markings. Does anyone recognize this? Thanks. Is there a place to listen to the rebroadcast of "tails from the golden road" besides the rebroadcasts on the satellite radio? I have a Sirius subscription but can't ever seem to catch the show throughout the week. Is there a website that you can stream it from or something like that?

Backstory: August 9 1995 was not a happy morning. I got the news and I reached for some cassettes. Most of my 500+ cassettes were unlabeled (but good!) and I happened to make a mix tape out of a couple I grabbed. This show was on one tape. I looked through Deadbase over the years but haven't ever definitely located this show -- so I edited the ****SUBLIME*** solo and posted it here: http://www.spaceways.net/wow.mp3 The solo is in the Fire part of Scarlet/Fire and it's followed by Estimated. I cannot tell you how many times I have listened to this tape over the years. Hundreds. Thousands. I remember when my son was little and riding in my VW in his car seat and he starting singing "Fire, fire mountain"... I realized I'd played the tape a LOT. Anyway. not trying to knock the man, but I believe I once read that we was kicked out of the band in the early years due to poor playing ability. I've tried to search online to read more about this, but all I get is what a great rythm guitar player he is. I do believe he's good, but I'm trying to find out more about how he was in the early years. I am I way off base, or did he have a shaky start in the early years of the band? Thanks for any information anyone can supply.

yeah, the band was thinking of getting rid of Bob because they felt his guitar playing wasn't keeping up with the band innovating itself. The band was trying to become more progressive in its musical style and felt that Bob, because of his young age, wasn't picking it up. That's just what I've read in several GD books I picked up over the years... is it the real reason? we'll never know haha

Okay folks, this has been turning around in my brain since, well, since St. Patrick's Day. Was listening to XM Dead Channel and Pig Pen singing Good Lovin' came on. Now this version had a unique rap. It had all the elements of horseback riding, but the rap of the bakery and the cherry pie was unique. I have been searching all the shows from 70-72 for this version and have yet to find it. Any ideas out there folks? Yup, tried writing the dead channel several times with complete time and date, but now answer--so after four tries there, I thought I would sign up and see if the good folks here had any idea. btw, greetings and thanks in advance. regards, peacefarmer

It's a phenomenal site and the goal is to get all the shows. I'm hoping some vet. tapers out there may have some that he needs. I'm on top of all emails from dead.net and that ONE day that ONE email went to spam and I saw it too late. No other dead.net emails have gone to spam. Must be a hint from the universe telling me not to spend that kind of dough on music! Don't I have enough Dead?! Ha! If I do get it, I want the whole box, not just the CD's. Unless the CD only set goes down in price some day. It's just not right to charge the same amount as the folks who were lucky enough to get the box set. UNFAIR! No matter how fair a deal the $450 is for so many CD's, the whole set has that AND a lot more stuff. So they should simply NOT be the same price. :P

I see from the 1-19 Rolling Stone article from this year there'll be a multi disc box set released from several shows on one tour. Anyone catch wind of any other details on this? I was personally hoping for another Winterland box since there are several excellent runs that remain untapped. I was listening to the Feb. '74 2-22 Playing and the 2-23 Jam He's Gone>Truckin'>Other One>Eyes earlier today and it was fabulous. This run would comprise a great box set in my opinion. Bob Weir with the National this evening was pretty good. The interviews after were a nice touch as well.

lI am looking for information about Andrew England. He painted backdrops for the band and sold tiedies at concerts.

My son turns 18 next summer and it has occurred to me that if we don't an "On the Road" type thing together soon we'll miss the opportunity. We will be leaving from Virginia and our ultimate western destination would be San Francisco. We would take the southern route out. One of my brothers lives in Las Vegas and we would spend a number of days there. I would like to spend a couple days in Memphis. Seems a logical stop for a music fan. Not that much interested in Graceland but would like to check out Beale St. and possibly Sun Records. Thought of stopping in Albuquerque on the way out and definitely want to see the Grand Canyon (but might do that while visiting my brother). Would like to stay at least three days in San Francisco. I'm not firm on the return route. The direct route would be through Utah and Colorado but have considered going up the coast as far as Oregon or maybe even Washington before coming home. Estimate we would have approximately 18 days to do the whole thing. Would appreciate any info/suggestions as to ways to do this on a very limited budget and as to what route to take and what to see. Any local knowledge would be appreciated. Peace.

Wow, 18 days. Wish I had the time to do nothing with my child while on an odyssey cross-country. My advice would be getting off the interstate for certain selections of your tour. The Interstate has ruined our experience of America. Don't make advance reservations at chain motels. Some times that night's rate without a room sold is quite cheap. The Grand Canyon is nice, but I have seen it many times and I would go to the Hopi's Third Mesa,which is a sacred community of elders near Flagstaff. Sometimes it's not a good time to visit for white people.In the same way, I would think you should decide what themes are important to you and your son and plan accordingly. Are you more predisposed to Mount Rushmore or Devil's Tower (sacred to American Indians)? San Francisco is not cheap and I would find a place to stay near the city and explore by day. Motel 6 is up to $120 in SF. Unless money is no object, I would make a bee-line home and get in the way of whatever is interesting. Escalante and Capital Reef and the other "Grand Circle" of National Parks is always worthy! Good luck! Whatever happens is the perfect thing. With that attitude no bumming is allowed!

You might look at books like Route 66 Backroads by Hinckley, Bowers et al. or 20 West by Mac Nelson for tips. I for one would visit the Blue Hole in New Mexico.

my wife and I really enjoyed heading north to the variety of delights in Utah. Bryce Canyon was transportive, so magical, much more intimate, sparce crowds, and you can wander down into these towering psyhcedelic spires morning or night. Zion and Arches were spectacular as well. Again quieter, but with astounding and spiritual vistas. We definately want to return to those Utah sites/sights again. Those Utah parks were intimate and wonderful. Teachers open the door, but you enter by yourself.

As I understand it, somewhere around 1985, Jerry Garcia decided a Grateful Dead snowboard would be a great idea. A graphics company was commissioned to design one, and my late wife Sue Hill, a GD staffer in those days, was the point of contact. Sooz never mentioned whether the thing ever went into production, but the prototype of Jerry's snowboard is still here in the basement. Can anyone tell me any more about the history of this project? It needs to find a good home. I bought an RV from a family in Penn who said the camper made the entire last tour. It has some Memorabilia glued inside like the coin, and stickers, so I believe them but they had no further info or pictures. Looking here and asking if anyone remembers who had it, or if anyone has pictures of it. Would like to confirm my RV has a good history. It is a Coachmen, 1994 GMC Camper Van, white with blue trim. Love to have an old picture at a concert of it.
