Welcome back to the Tapers' Section, where this week we'll check out some Grateful Dead music Chicago (well, and Rosemont, IL) in a three year span from 1978 to 1981.
Our first selection this week is from 11/18/78 in Chicago, where we have a great second set sequence of I Need A Miracle>He's Gone>The Other One, featuring an early version of I Need A Miracle (the 12th live version) and a couple of older, great Grateful Dead songs.
Next is the end of the show from 12/4/79 in Chicago, featuring Space > Not Fade Away > Stella Blue> Sugar Magnolia Encore U.S. Blues. A few years later, Not Fade Away would be (mostly) linked with Throwing Stones and would become a show-closer, but these out-of-space versions really flow beautifully, a perfect song coming out of Space.
Lastly this week, from 12/6/81 in Rosemont, IL, we have the end of the show featuring yet another out-of-Space version of NFA, with the full sequence we have being Space>Not Fade Away>Wharf Rat>Good Lovin', Brokedown Palace. This is from a rare PA stereo recording that was recorded to reel-to-reel and not cassette, and helps explain why it sounds so clear and robust.
Be sure to join us here next week for more great music from the vault.
