Was able to get a ticket by getting online outside the ticketron(I think thats what it was called then)at midnight. The tix went onsale the next morning.Must have been a month or two before New Years. The ticket place was a music store on telegraph avenue. Wish I could remember more about the show but I guess the many years and the LSD and the Wine that night has affected the old memory.

This was my first show. I was 16 years old. An older hippie guy (maybe all of 25 years old ) came up to us outside in line and opened an ornate, velvet lined jewelry box and inside was a small card that said "Courtesy of the Grateful Dead" and there were a number of interesting small pieces of paper . I had heard a little bit of Europe '72 at that point, but I had no idea what I was in for. Winterland was bathed in black light and someone tossed hundreds of day-glo superballs from the balcony and they were constantly bouncing in out of your vision, off your head . . . There was a good light show and lots of explosions and fire balls ... I recently downloaded this show and the music , starting with Truckin', which was probably like 3 am, is positively transcendental. I remember David Crosby sitting in. Check out a recording of this show. The announcer for KSAN is so obviously dosed. It's hilarious.

Was living in Berkley at the time. Wanted to see this show bad. Pannhandled the line, got tics given to us. No sooner then we get in the lobby my bud crazy george started to broadcast that he needed some cid, Bill Grahm was standing in the lobby with some of his boot lickers and sicked them on george I got involved and we both got tossed out. Ended up trippin and listening to the concert on the simulcast.

First show and was hooked. I treasure my copy of the show, also, New Riders/Son performances that night are on Wolf Gangs Vault.

I had just moved to Berkeley 3 months prior, right after college. My roommate and I had no friends to party with on New Year's Eve, so we went to Mandrake's, a Berkeley bar, because Country Joe McDonald was playing there. Why not party with Country Joe, we said. and why not take some Quaaludes while we're at it?! Ten minutes after we arrived, two guys approached us. "We have four tickets to Winterland to see the Grateful Dead at Winterland but we're high on acid and can't drive. If you drive us over there we'll give you our two extra tickets." What a score! So we hopped into my car and drove across the bridge to Winterland. When we got there another band was playing (New Riders?). We lost the guys and found a spot on the floor. The Dead came on and started playing. During the long jams my friend and I would fall asleep (quaaludes are not the DOC for the Dead), and then we'd wake up and dance. I remember the balloons coming down at midnight. At one point, some crazy guy got up on the lighting rig and had to be talked down by Bill G. I met that guy's roommate 15 years later and we're good pals now. Despite the fact that I later moved to San Francisco and ended up working right down the street from Winterland, I didn't go to another show until Eugene 1981. Then, I got it, and went to 250 more shows over the next 14 years. Had to make up for lost time, I guess.

Just finished listening to my 30 days of DEAD.Thank you doesnt seem like much of a way to show how much its appreciated.A great & unexpected Xmas present.

flew out to Oregon to go to college, hitchiked down interstate 5 with some deadheads, picked up some Henry's wine. Hung out in line the day before and got a ticket. Remember David Crosby playing at the end.

This show sealed the deal for me, probably cause I was high down in front the Dead rocked the place, and I had so much fun! I was on board for the next 23 years! What a fun ride!
