Ed Snowden took off over the unbelieving eyes of the US government ambassador and intelliegence officials after they had made an official request for his extradition back to the US on espionage charges. Thinking they had all the i's dotted and t's crossed the Hong Kong Chinese requested more clarification as the plane was literally wheels up from Hong Kong's Chek Lap Kok (No, it's not a new Hong Kong lap dance) Airport on it's way to Moscow. Snowden was flanked by a Wikki Leaks legal team who plan to accompany him to his final place of political asylum, the democracy of Ecuador, or perhaps Venezuela (as opposed to the Republic of the US.) The Mozilla Firefox start page now has a statement to remind us all: "Security and privacy are not optional. Stand with a broad coalition to demand that the NSA stop watching us: (go to) stopwatching.us" Ed Snowden is a true patriot because he brought the light of day to these NSA programs that allow spying on US citizens for any purpose with a rubber stamp court. As a result, these government programs must face a debate in the light of day. As a result, also, it has been released that the FBI is indeed spying on US citizens with it's own drones, something Obama and the AG have blatantly denied. The Obama Administration and it's predecessors (Mostly W. Bush) have sold us all down the river in the name of profitable corporate stability, saying it is keeping us all safe from terrorism. There are no liberal or independent senators and representatives (Pelosi, Feinstein, Sanders) who feel any differently. Rand Paul, the conservative Libertarian heir of father Sen. Ron Paul is the new champion of freedom. We have the lost the war on terrorism at the cost all that is dear to us: OUR LIFE, LIBERTY AND THE PURSUIT OF OUR HAPPINESS! And a narrow majority of Americans agree. How pathetic!!! Oh sure, nothing really changes until it changes, but how would you like to wake up one day and find out that Stewart and Colbert had been canceled because they were traitors and Fox News was the new orthodoxy? "First they came for the Jewish comedians, and I did nothing..."

First we get video of him stealing Robert Kraft's super bowl ring when the two met in Moscow (Putin reportedly said something like "You could really kill a man with a ring like this!") Then he put it in his pocket and walked away, cloaked by his Praetorian Guard. Then he apparently throws Snowden to the lions after pulling this little insect's wings off. But wait, Putin has shown that he can do anything he wants to. Who knows what the hell he is doing? The national news is practically doing a victory lap! Supposition? Perhaps he is having the new version of the KGB do a debrief on Snowden's carcass after copying the memory sticks from the four government computers he supposedly downloaded to the bone. Then, depending on Putin's hangover, he could either let him fly on or turn him over for the bonus points. Ugghhh Ed, you could have done this a better way. I'm not sure the rice & beans taste any better in Ecuador than they do in a super-max, which is where you are most assuredly heading if Putin really tied one on -- with booze or some other device...

My gut tells me no, but there is reactionary bulge in the demographic that is hard to predict. One thing is clear. Obama and the rest of our rulers believe in: INFORMATION! lol! I, too, am waiting for that other shoe to fall. I do think people are way too much asleep on the government end but the private hackers are frightening. Even if compromising your private data is just a way to make points in the business world as when Heartland Payment (a credit processor) got it's servers hacked to the tune of 150,000,000 identities. Just to make a point to it's blowhard CEO. Bob Carr. (The point was: Banks rule the credit processing business, not a processing company). In the end we're screwed every way we turn, even by sweatshop Chinese hackers who just want to sell driver's licenses! Bad news stats.? I It'll cost you about a million dollars to get your identity back unless you have well-crafted big-cap ID theft insurance.

creative piece of writing, Anna. Thank you. Honestly, what concerns me more than anything on a daily basis is hacking and identity thieves. I'm waiting for the day that I really need to use a credit card and it won't go through. Months of phone calls, written letters and forms to fill out because some college kid with time on his hands and a hacker's program wiped out my credit history and my bank account. If the NSA wants to spy on my emails and phone conversations - let 'em. They'll need a handful of No Doze and a strong pot of coffee because my daily life is a total snoozer. The most exciting thing I look forward to is my son's baseball games and checking out dead.net. And with the inevitable advent of drones it just seems like there's no privacy anymore.....anywhere, indoors or out. I like what Gustavo said to Walt on Breaking Bad, "I hide in plain sight, just like you." It's pretty much the only option left.

let this be a lesson to all, stay off of Facebook, Twitter and especially Dead.net! Make sure all your "gardening supplies" and GD tickets are paid for in cash only and if you drive a 19 yr. old piece of shit like I do that's lucky to make it out of the driveway, much less to my destination, you don't have to worry about car computer surveillance. On second thought, they can have my car - their loss, not mine. I'll just hop a ride on an Amish buggy since I get stuck behind them quite often anyway. With all of these new and exciting revelations of big brother electronic shenanigans, the Amish simply don't know what they're missin'. :))))

Ukraine's unrest has left the door open for neighboring Russia to walk right in and take control of the Crimean peninsula. This gives Russia more coastline on the Black Sea for their navy. I don't think the apparent invasion was for humanitarian or stabilization purposes. Today's stock markets suffered as a consequence, especially those with Russian interests. Some energy and commodity prices went up. NATO is silent, as is eastern Europe, as far as I can tell. Eyes fall upon the USA to do something about Vladimir Putin's "incredible act of aggression", a quote from Sec. of State John Kerry. Putin is more interested in Crimea than he is in improving Russia's relationship with the USA. Let's see how Barrack Obama handles this tense situation and hope for diplomatic success to diffuse potential hostilities.

Crimea had finally decided to join Russia after 96.6 of voters are favor to join Russia. Crimea had become independent Ukraine since 1954. However, majority of their population were Russians.

Holy crap!! First place in the A.L East. Finally this team is playing like it was told to us at the beginning of last season. Hitting dingers like madmen and getting quality starting pitching is paying off after seasons of playing rather dull baseball. The only doubt's I have is the bullpen. it seems they need a 4 or 5 run cushion every night to pull off a win. Still...first place after 50 or so games hasn't happened in a long time. As far as the Habs go, I guess it's a good thing and I'd like to see them go 7 games. But it's hard for me to cheer for a team I hated all season. Hockey ended for me when the Leafs shit the bed. I think St Louis mother passing away has seemed to be a rallying cry for the whole Rangers organization. I hope they win it all.

Bummer the US couldn't beat Portugal yesterday. I thought they had it then let that goal in with less than a minute left. Hope they can tie or beat Germany Thursday.

It was very disappointing to lose the lead with less than a minute to play. We played very well but let our guard down just for a moment and they exploited it. I think a win against Germany will be difficult. Though if Ghana could tie them, maybe we can too. At the very least, if we can avoid a route like Portugal got against Germany, then we should be ok to move on. -Dave

I think your right. Beating Germany is going to be tough task think they were one of the favorites to take the whole thing. Would absolutely love to see them beat Germany though, imagine the confidence boost it would give them going into the next round. I think if we loose and Portugal beats Germany we still get in. Not real sure about that though. Looking forward to the match on Thursday.

Yeah, if we win or tie Germany, we advance. If we lose to Germany, then it gets tricky. If Portugal/Ghanna tie, we advance. If Portugal beats Ghanna, we would tie Portugal on Win/Loss/Tie, so it would go to point differential. Since Portugal got stomped by Germany 5-1, they would have to beat Ghanna by about the same to advance over the US. If they only win by 1 or 2, the US still would advance. If Ghanna were to beat Portugal, we would be tied with them on Win/Loss/Tie but Ghanna has a much lower goal differential to overcome so if they won by 2, they would advance and the US would be out. Of course the numbers would vary by what Germany beats us by. So, ideally, we either win/tie Germany, or we want Portugal to tie or barely win against Ghanna. Thursday will definitely be an exciting afternoon! -Dave

Well, if the US can't make it, then I would probably go with Mexico, or possibly Brazil or Belgium. Beyond that, anyone who can beat the Netherlands! I am more of a fan of the "beautiful game" style of soccer that countries like Spain, Brazil and Mexico play, than the "almost American football" tactics of the Netherlands. Unfortunately Netherlands are favored now. Hoping, whether US wins or not, that Mexico can beat them next week. Will be their toughest game. You? Got anyone in particular you are rooting for? -Dave

Israel/Gaza, the Iraq debacle, Syria, Libya, unresolved Afghan election, the August recess with really not much hope of anything productive from congress, Snowden asylum, Ukraine crisis, the CIA spying on the senate, California drought, November midterm elections, suing the president? It's no surprise things are a little dry around here, especially since Anna's gone...oh well. Ignorance is bliss!

as, on one level, it's a regional grocery store issue in New England. However, the Save Market Basket saga is, in my opinion, the most important business story in recent memory, representing as it does the success of stakeholders refusing to let a business be destroyed by greedheads. God bless those folks.

'It's time to make emotional abuse a crime.Psychological violence is hard to define and hard to police. That's exactly why those experiencing it need the law to be changed.' Insightful piece by Lauren Laverne - http://www.theguardian.com/lifeandstyle/2014/sep/07/time-to-make-emotio… An average of seven women are killed by their current or ex-partners every month in England and Wales. The numbers in the United States are considerably higher. Lauren Laverne: 'What I remember most about emotional abuse is that it's like being put in a box. My Brewers really screwed the pooch this year. After spending most of the season in first place, they lose 22 of their last 31 and end up in third place. Funny the first 1/3 of the Royals lineup last night were former Brewers, as is the manager Ned Yost. Yost was fired after almost botching the Crew out of the '08 playoff picture. Go figure.

Tim Flannery recently talked to AP about singing the anthem with Bobby and Phil, and he also dropped a nice cryptical hint about 2015. "We did this two years ago," Flannery said. "And they haven't been together. They're about ready to start a 50th anniversary Grateful Dead, so they kind of split their ways this last summer, and so this might have been the first time they've been together." http://www.billboard.com/articles/news/6281764/grateful-deads-phil-lesh…

Technically, the same day is the present. It just depends on your time scale. I was only kidding anyway, I had a feeling the new post in this forum had something to do with the football game, so I resisted clicking through to the messages. By the way, I find it hard to the watch inane commercials while the event is happening. So there's the obligatory trade-off.
