Ornette with the Dead, at last!
I will remember the Iko parade always. What a treat to hear Ornette! I'd been a fan of his since I first heard The Shape of Jazz to Come, This is Our Music, and Free Jazz. He had to have been one of the Dead's early inspirations, at least for Phil and Jerry.

My first and only west coast show. We were so young and stupid we drove all the way to Oakland & saw only one show & then came home (to Cincinnati). I could/will never forget it. Fantastic show! We thought we were so cool we made it all the way to the floor, thought we were so cool. Then I realized out west it was general admission & we just infringed on peoples established spots. One friend was so messed up he just sat on the floor Indian style, no idea what was going on. It was a very far drive for one one show, but we didn't know any better and thought we were awesome, I apologize to all the true California fans that had to deal with our dumb Ohio asses.

Anyone know if recordings exist of Ornette's opening set with Prime Time? Apparently Jerry joined in for a few songs (as he did on the album).
