    Reflections on a Tour
Well, the Spring Tour 2009 is in the bag and was definitely one for the books! That's for sure. I know a lot of people might think the Dead are dead without certain members, and to be honest, the last couple of tours the Dead have done were great experiences for me, but I always felt like people were "sitting in" to fill some big shoes left behind. Even Warren, in 2004, felt like he was filling in. So I went to the LA Forum show expecting what we got in 04. Oh how wrong I was! That first throat grabbing chord of the show was like the band was saying to everyone in the Forum, "Listen up people! We're not f*#cking around here, we're here to play so let's get down to it!" And then BOOM, right into that unreal VLB groove, with a beat that you just had to move to. I have been doing tours since the late 70's/early 80's and to my ears, this band has never been better. On the one hand, they're tighter, yet they're also looser. I cant explain it, and honestly, that's about the best one can say about the Dead when they're really "on", "well, I cant explain it man, you just have to experience it..." ;) I've been keeping up with the Tour, listening to the shows online as the Tour progressed and the first half was just okay for me. But in LA it felt like something happened that night and everything the boys had been striving for just all fell into place that night. The Forum felt like an old school East Coast indoor arena show, complete with rabid, hardcore heads that were so grateful to be back at the party again. This was not a "best of" tour. This was a "here's who we are now, dig it" tour, and man did I love what I heard on the West Coast leg of this Tour. That night in LA, I realized that Warren and Jeff no longer felt like they were filling in for anyone anymore. The *were* the Dead just as much as Bobby, Phil, Billy or Mickey are. To me, the Dead has always been a band in flux. There have been so many iterations of them I've sort of lost count. So to those who lament a Jerryless Dead, all I can say is, you don't know what you're missing. Sure I miss Jerry and I miss Brent. But the Dead as they are right now? Sound the best I've ever heard them and they're not stale, they're still out there pushing the envelope and really, isn't that what this is all about? So yeah, I no longer get weepy when I hear Brokedown Palace or Ripple or Box of Rain. I just revel in the fact that I get to experience this amazing thing we call The Dead, once again. And I am truly Grateful. One final comment...It felt so great to experience Shakedown once again and the lot scenes in LA and the Gorge were excellent. Like some upthread said, I found my self also saying things, and using expressions that I haven't used in a long time...It felt good to have the tribe back together again, didn't it?!

My sentiments exactly. It was a bittersweet night. Very cool to stay up until 3 am+ listening to the whole show, with great interviews and commentary thrown in during the set break. But it was so great to back out there catching 4 shows, eagerly anticipating seeing the setlists of the shows I didn't catch each morning, listening to the downloads etc. I'm going to miss all that. I'm firmly in the camp that thinks the music has changed/evolved in a great way....new sounds, tunes I never thought I'd get to hear live, Rhythm Devils taking it to new heights each night etc etc. Warren and Jeff are as good as it gets in the post Jerry/Brent/Keith/Pigpen era, which is to say they're both amazing musicians who fit right into the fabric of the band and helped to make the magic each night. Jeff is a monster on the keys and Warren managed to channel the ghosts of Jerry/Brent/Pigpen in his paying and singing while keeping it new and fresh and his own as well. Branford's interview during the set break was spot on: they're older, they've each gone on to do new things are are coming at playing together from a new angle, pushing the boundaries and not just treading the worn path. By the time they got to the Gorge, they seem to have all completely melded musically and got the bugs all worked out. We may not see them out on the road two thirds of the year anymore....at least as The Dead, but I gotta think the fun they seemed to be having along with the embrace of the fans will pull them back for another go around or two down the road. And yes, it was really cool to hear Mickey thank the crew and bring them out onstage for some well deserved applause. I've seen them with Jerry from the early 80's onward, seen Phil and his band, Ratdog, the Dead 2003/4 and I can say I had as good a time at these shows and I've had at any. All different, all excellent and all the music of the Grateful Dead which is what it's all about. Thanks guys!

Not sure if this is the appropriate forum to use but I'm sure Marye will let me know. I just went to the GDTS TOO website for the first time in years to see about Ratdog tix and was amazed at what i found. It prompted me to send them the following... Please don't take offense. Just a little constructive criticism. It's been many years since I've visited your site. Back in the day I thought it was the greatest thing ever. The days of calling the hotline every day sometimes multiple times were over, but come on guy's, your site is really quite primitive by today's standards. To my dismay, when I tried to fill out the credit card form I discovered it wasn't interactive. I consider myself a caveman for not having a printer/copier/scanner combo, but times are tough. I don't even know where to find a fax machine. Aren't we supposed to be a paperless society by now? This planet needs all the trees she can produce. The decorative envelopes are still very cool, and should be an option, but how about an online interactive version of the envelope? I'm sure there are thousands of heads out there into web design who would be willing to collaborate and put something together for you. I'm not a designer myself but I'm willing to help wherever I can. Just something to consider. Peace and much thanks for all you do. So this would be a shout out to all of you webmasters out there if they are receptive. I know youre out there, a simple Google search for anything Dead related shows me there's some mad skills out there. I have not recieved a response yet, but when I do I'll post it.

thor369 - I'm still waiting for my two Chicago show downloads that were ordered May 3rd! Hope your wife is better. she is doing much better. it was an asthma and panic attack type combo, scary stuff. my CD isnt a download, it was a CD i paid for, at the show, they was recording off the mixing boards, and pressing official show CD's on the spot for $25, with show date, and place, on official The Dead CDs. it is why i dont want the download to replace my CD, my puter dont have good speakers, and i only listen to my CDs in my car, or my headset CD player. i cant reburn 1 on my puter, and it isnt the official CD with the printed faces on them.

Chicago was incredible... 20 years since since my love's and mine last show but with one more in tow - our 11 year old son whose favorite song right now is Throwing Stones. All with a different yet better spirit. The magic was back. It does remind me of reading a book where you don't understand the words and you go back later and understand it even more after life experience. I started reading the book long ago and loved it - and It means even more now. The shows brought smiles, healing and joy. Peace Mike P.S. Please Tour again !!!! - You are beautiful together ! Such a long long time to be gone and a short time to be there

Ironically you can ascertain where Mail Order Tix will be by accessing third party sites and noting sections where they have none for sale. Good news is that Secs. 5,6,7,8, 70-74,60-64,79-83,87-93,95,96,40,42,43,46,47,120,122-128,133,102,103,108 and great seats in prime 200 sections are all fantastic seats for we mail orderers. Lets hope the lucky 1/3 all use these and none end up where so many thousands of the MSG tix available in the first two stages of this sale are. Good luck to all. Take care.

In all honesty....As long as the sound at these venues is together and views are not obstructed it does not matter where you are sitting as long as you are in and your at the party you will have a GREAT time. Getting in should be the only thing you should have to worry about.

Rosa-Did I see somewhere that you have a room close(walking distance)to the DCU center in exchnge for a ticket? If so,Im VERY interested. My wife and I want to go to the show-but we also want to consume MASS-QUANTITIES-That being said-we do not wish to ruin our lives by getting an OUI or crashing our car thus possibly ruining multiple lives(NOWUTTIMEAN?)Anyway we may have an extra for the right room-as long as you dont mind that it wont be front row(by any stretch of the imagination)But were not expecting the penthouse suite of the RITZ/CARLTON,either(lol)But the ride from Worcester to Lowell is a long one when you've had a few and your lookin over your shoulder for MASS STATE TROOPERS(Believe me-I Know!!!!)But these days I have waaaay to much to lose by doing something stupid! But Phish put out a formal apology about live nation not being able to handle their online ticket sale ( 2 days after it went down.) Kinda upsets me i havent heard a word from the dead about their online sale debacle or the horrific prices. I think they should stream the concerts on the internet to make it up to everybody. sorry, just venting.

If weather permits at Greensboro, Washington, Charlottesville, Albany, Buffalo and E. Rutherford, look for some Paiste Planet Gongs, Crystal Bowls and Vibraphone to sooth your soul before the shows. This is going to be an awesome tour, we are coming to the end of an era for this GREAT music and the world is going to be a very different place when that happens. Enjoy this for ALL it's worth while you can. Thank you boy's for the New Journey. David Hickey Paiste Gongs and Quartz Crystal Bowls Sound Journey www.crystaljourney.ca

Darn it, I wish would have mail ordered like I did so many times before. I got ok seats for the United Center, but man I've seen alot of bands there and the acoustics suck. At least I'm going to be able to show the girl what I have been talking about this whole time. FleaFlicker, I don't think that the Boyz have to apologize for the website overload. Being that mail order was available TOO and you know how kind our people our. How many people would you actually trust at a Phish show? Me, a few, but I'm not going for the scene, just the music....The Dead on the other hand, well, I want to see my old long lost friends and meet some newbies as well.....guess I'm going home to Shoreline for "the" parking lot, cuz I know the United Center ain't going to do that. By the way, if anyone is going, we are having a bonfire/headicated get together with a live band along the way (the 'burbs of Chitown) for all you kind critters (may 4th night) and yes, I don't mind if you sleep on the couch with Delilah. However, you must pass the kindness test first. Just send me a PM. P.S. I do have Phish tickets too for Alpine, but believe you me, I'm a musician, that's why. Ah, the ol' Knickerbocker arena. Seems like just yesterday we were hanging around trying to find cliff ,( he is the guy on disc two of the original release), and attaching clothespins to the hems of the unsuspecting "heads" who walked by. that was a fun game! All of the shows here have been really great and I am looking forward to the one night in April. I am headed out the following day or I would be trying to go to Worcester as well. Tad carper, you hooked Keith and I up and earned a spot in the collective story of our touring days. Vanguard Press indeed! Don't know why they wait until the last minute to ship I already got my tickets in the mail from the outlets - took like 5 days. Here is my wish list: UNDER NO CIRCUMSTANCES IS BOBBY ALLOWED TO SING AND RUIN ANY OF THE FOLLOWING CLASSIC GARCIA SONGS: 1. Wharf Rat 2. Stella Blue 3. Morning Dew 4. Black Peter 5. China Doll Feel free to add to the list. I am excited about the tour and looking forward to seeing the boys for the first time in like 25 years (other than a few Phil shows). However, I just listened to the New Year's Eve show on the Grateful Dead Hour, and heard Weir absolutely butcher Wharf Rat. It was horrifyingly bad. There are some songs in my opinion that are so quintessential Jerry that the boys should just leave them alone. I know some of you will disagree, but I will walk out of any show that Bobby ruins the vibe for me. "Let there be songs to fill the air."

There is no one who should sing Jerry songs other than Bobby. And you can't just eliminate all Jerry songs give me a break. I agree that Bobby needs help with the singing duties but to say that he shouldn't sing Jerry songs but have Warren do it instead??? The tour will turn into a Gov't mule rendition of Grateful Dead songs - no thanks! In my opinion only Bobby is qualified to sing Jerry songs. He sang Morning Dew last summer and it brought tears to my eyes something that hasn't happened since I was standing there listening to Jerry sing it. Two summers ago he sang Standing on the Moon and again it brought tears to my eyes. You are right there will never be another Jerry but the next best thing is Bob Weir not Warren Haynes. Everyone is entitled to their opinion. Also, I do not want to eliminate all Jerry songs, only certain ones. In fact, I am looking forward to hearing a bunch of Jerry songs, because so many of them are great. My point was that there are a small number of Garcia songs that are so "Jerry" because of the vocals that they should be off limits, and that I will be disappointed to hear Bobby sing them. It's not like the band doesn't have a huge number of other songs to choose from. "Let there be songs to fill the air."

Jackstraw that's a different spin. I've always liked Bobby singing Chincat on TOO. I guess it's that Jerry just had that ability to croon unlike anyone else. But someone has to step up and try. Bobby's always had that one two rock-n-roll punch thing going along with the ability to go off the deep end at any given moment. It's very much different from Jer's approach. I think some songs would work better than others but then again I haven't heard Bobby do some of Jerry's sweetest songs like Dew or Wharf Rat. For that matter I haven't heard Warren do very many of them either. It's not really relevant but David Crosby could pull off a few Jerry tunes

Here to back you up JackstrawfromCo! I was moved by the Morning Dew at RedRocks too, and all the other Jerry songs he sang soulfully that evening. I hadn't been to a show in probably ten years. Drumhead - Could you imagine DC singing with the Dead! Holy cow I would have thought I died and was sitting in heaven!!! Gratefuljam - You know what I'm talking about! It was one of those magical and mytical nights at RR. This may sound goofy but I could feel Jerry standing on the stage that night in 07 and in 08 - smiling at Bobby who was singing his song. But I heard Bobby sing "Mission in the Rain" last fall, and I thought it sounded great. It wasn't Jerry, but it's never going to be Jerry, is it?
