The band says Happy New Year with an announcement of almost twenty shows in April and May. More details to come!
Don't Get Me Wrong
I LOVE when Bobby sings, and I was not suggesting that Warren sing all the tunes. I would like everybody to try and as usual someone will emerge. Bobby is an amazing singer with passion running through his veins and vocal cords. Crosby would ROCK on some Jerry tunes.
I'm just suggesting that the boyz push it furthur by changing it up.
Dude, I even like it when they would go to the crowd for the singing sometimes, not like the way cheesy bands do it, but the way EVERYONE in the house or venue was belting it out!
Remember when Phil and Friends would do rounds, that's fun too.

Will you come with me? Once in awhile you can get shown the light in the strangest of places if you look at it right!
My last post
is still being hung up, so excuse me if I repeat myself.
First, I am glad I posted my initial thoughts because it has provoked a good discussion.
Second, I never intended to eliminate all Jerry songs. There are plenty of Jerry songs I want to see, because they are great. On the other hand, there are certain Garcia songs that Jerry's vocals are so vital and essential to the very essence of the song, that I would rather not hear anyone else sing them.
Third, I would prefer no one sing these few tunes, not just Bob. (OK if Crosby were to take a stab at Wharf Rat, I admit I would love it.)
Fourth, there is no doubt that Bobby has the "right" to sing the songs; I would just prefer that he not. Some people would rather see Bobby sing Wharf Rat instead of not seeing the tune at all. I understand that point of view, but I don't agree with it.

Yeah bro I know what you are saying, Jerry's voice is impossible to replace. The first time I saw Ratdog I was skeptical about Bob singing Jerry tunes too but once I heard him I was totally fine with it. I have a problem with someone like Warren coming in and singing songs with his own spin on it. Like he'll add a couple extra words or leave out some and I don't overly like his voice. Now if Crosby sang say Wharfrat it would sound nothing like we've ever heard. It may even be the best version know what I mean? If you have a voice like Crosby you can sing anything and make it sound better!
"Half of my life I spent doing time for some other f@$ker's crime the other half found me stumbling around drunk on burgundy wine"
How about this?
This thread got us ruminating over the crazy idea of a show of all new Dead material - songs we've never heard before. Most bands go on tour to promote a new album - could you imagine such a thing???
LET IT BE
I agree with alot thats being said about certain Jerry songs Weir should'nt sing, but he does add his own flavor to them.I mean he's not gonna sound like Jerry no matter what!(Nor should he try to)I think we are so used to Jerry's voice and accent's and style on those songs that ANYBODY but Jerry singing them is gonna sound weird to us. So maybe we should just be happy to still be hearing these songs live AT ALL!!! (It's all good,baby-dont sweat the little details)As far as all this"Let Phil sing"crap-The man is genius musician but let's be serious,people-his singing SUCKS!! Sorry-But the truth hurts.♪♪♪"Everybody's dancing in a ring around the sun-Nobody's finished--We aint even begun!!"♪♪♪
It's all good
It's fun to have a FRIENDLY debate!
Heck why not have Jackie Greene sing (and play guitar). He sings the songs like they should be sung and I don't know I kind of like him .. maybe .. just a little. :-)
"But I'll get back, On my feet some day. The good Lord willing, If he says I may. I know that the life, I'm living's no good. I'll get a new start, Live the life I should."

You going to the Pepsi Center?

rosa ragosa
The idea of new songs as The Dead wouldn't be half bad. I wouldn't mind hearing a few new songs as long as they played alot of originals. Hmmmmm.... I wonder....Phatmoye
GD IN NH??
I Have a little disagreement with a friend of mine-He says Grateful Dead have never played in New Hampshire and I say "They MUST have!!" who's right??
once. 5/5/78 in Hanover
this and many other fascinating bits of info await you in the Shows and Lyrics section in the menu on the upper left!
Whatever they play is cool
I think after Jerry died it would have been a gracious nod to the Grateful Dead legacy to leave Jerry's work alone and explore new space and time with other idea's and new musical arrangement only involving current band members songs and maybe a few new songs
I was at the NYE show and
I was at the NYE show and one thing that was lacking through a lot of the midnight set was vocals. Jackie Greene can sing, but he doesn't sing the Dead songs with the sole they deserve. My dream would be for John Kadlecik to sing with the Dead. Here's what Bob had to say after playing with DSO: "A couple of times when I had my back to John onstage and he started to sing, I had this weird sense that it was Jerry." Nobody will ever replace Jerry. But that's quite an endorsement. And I agree. Close your eyes and listen to John Kadlecik and you just might believe you're listening to Jerry. I don't have much hope that Kadlecik will ever tour with the Dead. I think Warren Haynes is a good choice. He does have a great voice.
Regardless of who sings what, I plan on having a great time. I'm just happy the guys are getting together for a tour. It was so cool to walk out of the NYE show and be handed a flyer announcing the tour. What a way to top off the night!
No one can sing like Jerry
No one can sing like Jerry and no one can play guitar like Jerry. I can understand the feeling that some songs will never be the same with someone else singing them. However, most of these are great songs that shouldn't be buried never to be heard live again. I've heard Warren do a very moving Stella Blue! The trick for me is to not expect it to sound like Jerry. Sometimes a different interpretation might bring new perspectives on an well known song. I intend to enjoy the show no matter who sings what!
bobby
don't get me wrong, I like bobby alot, was a bobby fan all thru the 70's, even before I saw the dead, i was a kingfish fan, (first dead show 9-77) caught ratdog in Oville in 07, with kimock, they did a days between that would have been on my original list but it was sooo good, it had the entire place sheading a tear, including Ace himself. it was truly inspirational to see bobby capture the bittersweetness of this wonderful tune. I don't think that bobby shouldn't sing any of Jerry's tunes, but there are just a few that are special to us all. but heck, let them try them, if they muck them up, it will just be another great memory.
let there be songs to fill the air."
Jack Straw
No Pepsi center for me.
Just LA and Shoreline this run, so far!!
Red Rocks heck yeah, heres to hoping
does anyone know how to find
does anyone know how to find out more information on mail order tickets? the customer service number just repeats over and over again how they won't answer questions about tickets, wtf? i sent my mail order in for both worcester nights and i haven't heard anything. any info would be great guys,, i'm a noob! ;)thanks-Jenna
Jenna
I BELIEVE they posted a message that all orders would be filled EXCEPT MSG and Shoreline and that they'd be mailing out the rejections first, so on the whole I would say no news is good news. (The message in question is posted several hundred responses back, but I'm not sure exactly how many hundred at this point, so anyone with better or more current info is cordially invited to correct me.)
GDTS TOO
Those are good folks there, I was able to get a Nassau tix at the last minute, faxed in a credit card form, I have never been disappointed about their service!!! The message said that tix would be mailed out in the next couple of weeks, if you havent got a rejection letter and money order back yet, you probally got tix!!!
ticket master
This ticket master thing feels like one big joke. It almost seems that we'd be better off finding a ticket in the lot the night of the show!Maybey even cheaper then ticket master.Phatmoye
Possible xtras for Chi-Town...
I mail ordered a pair for Chicago and am hopeful that I'll get them. In an effort to hedge my luck, I was able to grab a pair from the evil Ticketmaster when tickets hit the street. If GDTSTOO comes through, I will be left with an xtra pair that I will happily lay on someone for face value. They will be of the cheap(?) $50.00 variety and as soon as I know for sure, we can pursue a path of easy transaction. If interested, PM me.see y'all out there,

Ticketmaster---TicketsNow
There may be something to the belief that Ticketmaster redirects tickets to TicketsNow, bypassing fans. I hope that someone gets to the bottom of this.

Re Ticketmaster---TicketsNow
Actually, the article that you posted is misleading. Here is a link with the entire apology from the CEO of Ticketmaster. He apologizes that Springsteen fans were redirected to Tickets Now, and that it won't happen again. However, he states explicitly that Ticketmaster does not redirect tickets to Tickets Now. There is a big difference between the two. Springsteen probably had a ticket pre sale like the Dead, and that is why there were Tickets available on Tickets Now right as Ticketmaster sold out. With regard to the Dead, the pre sale and mail order were the likely causes that Ticketmaster ran out of tickets so fast at venues like MSG.
Now if you want to complain about Ticketmaster's fees, I will not be defending them. :)

Re: Mail Order
Actually, there's a third venue where mail order demand exceeds supply (PA-Spectrum...2nd night only). Here's the closing paragraph from the GDTS e-mail dated 1/22:
We are waiting for the last bit of mail postmarked
the 13th to arrive before starting the ticketing
process. Orders that we are unable to fill from
MSG, Spectrum and Shoreline reserved will be
will be returned before we start the ticketing
process. Tickets will start going out in the next
few weeks.
So, if you equate "a few weeks" with three, and the note came out two weeks ago, we're still a week or two away from seeing tickets in our mailboxes. And the poor souls who end up drawing short straws for MSG, Spectrum and/or Shoreline will be notified first.
So the two takeaways from all this are <1> no near-term news is good news (for NY, PA & CA patrons, anyway), and <2> patience is an admirable (if elusive) virtue! We'll know soon!
Re: Ticketmaster---TicketsNow
The link I provided doesn't appear to work anymore. There are also many articles if you go to Google News and enter Springsteen Ticketmaster in the search box.
When others on this thread suggested that Ticketmaster was funneling tickets to TicketsNow, it didn't make a whole lot of sense to me. Ticketmaster's reputation and relationship with the artists and the public would be so damaged (by underhandedly not letting the average fan get their hands on tickets at face price while at the same time making a huge profit on the secondary market) that I just can't see Ticketmaster being so stupid. OTOH, I suspect that it is true that there ARE underhanded deals going on. It's no longer on their website, but the New York State Attorney General issued a report on ticket distribution entitled "Why Can't I get Tickets?" (or something similar) that showed that ticket brokers pay bribes to the venues (or whoever is issuing tickets) to be able to buy blocks of tickets to hot events. Now, the report might be quite outdated today (it was issued around 10 years ago) because scalping is now legal in NY and also the growth of internet sales. But corruption is timeless.
TicketsNow and StubHub are not ticket sellers per se. They bring buyer and seller together, and they make a commission from both. So the buyer pays the asking price plus 10%, and the seller receives the proceeds less 10%. Nice business, huh? If the ticket goes unsold, it means nothing to TicketsNow or StubHub. It's the owner of the tickets that loses out.
The complaint in the Springsteen case does appear to be that, like for The Dead, customers who couldn't get tickets were suggested to visit TicketsNow, NOT that Ticketmaster redirected tickets to TicketsNow, bypassing fans. The question then would be, who were the tickets redirected to? If TicketsNow themselves, that would be a big scandal, and seems unlikely to me.
So it makes more sense that all kinds of people with no intention of going to the concert try to get tickets in order to resell them at a profit. Just take a look at all the ticket sellers on eBay...anybody can become a ticket reseller these days, all you need are a computer and an eBay account.
Re: Ticketmaster---TicketsNow
I don't want to have to defend TM but they would not reidirect you to TicketsNow. That would be your choice to visit that site not a mandate from TM. It seems to me that all the really good seats were sold through the presale and GDTS TOO, leaving TM with the rest. Now how do the TicketsNow and Stubhubs get a hold of tickets that I am not totally sure of but I know for sporting events season ticket holders and corporate ticket holders can sell their seats to a company like Stubhub so that they can turn around and sell them for you. I guess you can also make a few bucks doing that. Since there are no season ticket holders for a concert I am not sure how it works for that but I imagine corporations flat out own some seats in venues and they sell off concert tickets to stubhub, that part is just my guess. To be honest I'd rather buy concert tickets through TM than any other outlet especially for shows that sell out fast because TM is the only distributor that can handle thousands of orders at once. If TM would have been used for the presale rather than Musictoday, then that whole fiasco would have never happened. Although I thought LiveNation did a good job. Musictoday did not.

off-limits Jerry tunes
who's gonna put up the yellow tape? The self-appointed cops?
I hope they do Mission in the Rain at Shoreline, that's one of my favorite JGB tunes. Brings tears to the eyes every time.
I can't belive that anyone thinks that TM ..............
Wasn't directing tickets to Ticketsnow because they NEVER repeat NEVER went on sale through TICKETBASTARD for Chicago on January 24.
Read the truth I posted about this on that date. What a rottem and wasteful experience that was!!!
Re off-limits Jerry tunes
I saw him play Mission in the rain on 1/14/95 at the Warfield. Between Garcia and the Grateful Dead, I saw him almost a 100 times, and that was one of the best shows I ever saw. The Shinning Star was about 25 minutes.
Im so excited!!!!
Got my MSG tix and waiting on my Philly tix for both nights!YIPEEEEEEE!!!!!!!!
Peace,Gigi
Gigi, were those mail order
Gigi, were those mail order tickets?
JGB songs
I like when Bobby sings Catfish John too but yeah Mission in the Rain is a really beautiful song.
"But I'll get back, On my feet some day. The good Lord willing, If he says I may. I know that the life, I'm living's no good. I'll get a new start, Live the life I should"
Mission in The Rain...
You are getting it all wrong, it's not off-limit tunes....it's music. I'm just suggesting (discussing with all you headicated friends that certain tunes should not be sung by Bobby. Bobby's singing makes me have tears in my eyes sometimes...Mission in the Rain rocks, and I would love to here Tangled Up in Blue sung by Bobby....but there are certain tunes, where I don't think his "voice" fits. I
'm just suggesting try other singers besides Warren. BTW, I remember Ratdog playing in Tempe, AZ downtown on Mill St. WOW....that was amazing, he sang many Jerry songs that night. I loved it. What I'm saying is that there are certain tunes where only people like Crosby would be able to pull off the Jerry parts.
It's all debatable and a good way to start an objective conversation. It's not like I wouldn't be dancin to these songs for dayz after the concerts.
Holy streaming Dead batman.

Robert Hunter?
Does anyone know what Robert Hunter is up to these days? Seen him a few years back singing in The Other Ones in Cleveland. He did a great Days Between. I think Hunters voice sounds a little better then Warrens, not that I dislike Warrens voice, but Hunter gives that certain something that just seems to click.Phatmoye
I remember Hornsby
Singing Wharf Rat on the 1st Other Ones tour. I was so happy to hear the song, since I figured it was one of those off-limits Jerry songs ... at the time, who knew if they'd even play Jerry's songs? Bruce sounded good to me...
Has anybody
received their money orders back from the mail-in pre-sale? I am keeping my fingers crossed that I am in the lucky one-out-of-three group for MSG tickets.
Just out of curiosity, I checked the after market prices for MSG tickets and they are outrageous, like a $1,000 for floor seats. Man, it's not even the real Grateful Dead! Amazing.

dead.net data base
K, tried to log on to dead.net this morning and couldn't. It said can not connect, please install drupal??? It seems to be working fine now. I'm assuming dead.nets data base went down. Is there a number to call if this happens again?Phatmoye
GDTS TOO
New message:
EXTENDED....We have a few tickets remaining for some of the shows for The Dead Tour 2009 that will be available via credit card only. Please no phone calls or emails asking for seat locations, we have limited floor and lower bowl tickets. This offer will close when tickets are gone
John Bell
JB can see Jerry tunes. I heard him sing Morning Dew a while back that was pretty damn good.
"Where have all the people gone this morning Where have all the people gone today
Ain't no need for you to be worrying about all those people You never see those people anyway"
HORNSBY.....
IT WOULD BE GREAT IF HORNSBY WAS ON THIS TOUR HE WAS A BIG PART OF MY TOURING DAYS,, IT WOULD JUST BRING IT A LITTLE CLOSER TO HOME,
"THERES A BAND OUT ON THE HIGHWAY THERE HIGH STEPIN IN TO TOWN"
JINGLE - FEW GOOD MEN MC - NEW YORK
Yeah, I wish was Bruce was playin' too
I'm bummed Hornsby won't be on the keyboards also. I'll never forget some of the shows he played with the boys. Anybody who had the balls to play in the hotseat had to be cool but he did with a verve and style all his own in the class of a master...
HEY PHATMOYE!!
Could't log on to dead.net either! Can't wait till the Phillie run!!! HA! HA! HA! I curumBA!!!! love yaKottonmouthjeff
Nice stellie Kotton!
Almost looks like sumthin iv'e seen befofe (LOL) Love ya bro.. Phatmoye
Bruce
I'll NEVER forget Shoreline summer '91 they are playing Scarlet Begonias then Bruce just takes over and leads them into Victim or the Crime and they finish off with Fire. One of my all time favorite shows.
"What it is that feeds his fever. As the full moon pales and climbs. Am I living truth or a deceiver. Am I the victim or the crime"
showing up at the shows
the kind being kind to the kind. get down with the kick down so i can get down! it's all about the music and never fad away! i need a miracle to get me there! see you on the road.
Ticket Master
I cant believe that these scum bag ticket master jerks claim to put tickets on sale and just give the tickets to their scalping company they just set up. The Dead should reclaim all the tickets sold to the ticketmaster scalping company. I thought this is what they hates the most.
TicketRipper, Refund Gouged Deadheads!!!
If Ticketsheister is going to refund the difference in ticket prices for those who got redirected on the Springsteen shows the they damn well ought to do it for The Faithful, who just had their ticketprices jacked after being spoiled for so many years (by The GD keeping ticket prices low)... If they do refund we could look like a real class act by donating that entire amount to the Rex Foundation's worthy causes...
However it works out, those who paid the extra vig should see their scratch, one way or the other. This greedy bullshit needs to go the way of the Bushies and we can let our lovelight
shine through the Rex's causes!
