    I was at this show...
and I swear that the New Riders were not there- they were there the next year at Northrup, but not at the Guthrie. I know I'm getting old but I'm absolutely sure of this.

    Far Out Snowman!
I worked this show as a Guthrie Usher,( I know, rough job...whats a poor boy to do?). The New Riders opened the show and kinda Freaked the Psychedelic Crowd out abit. Had Jerry jumped ship? Pig was the Star this night! He had us in the palm of his hand! Take yer hands outta yer pockets! About halfway through the Deads Set Jerry kept looking up into the Catwalks above the stage. We had about 1000 folks outside (Guthrie only held 1295). Some kids had gotten up on the flat roof and had taken a skylight off and were watching the show from about 40 feet above Garcia! We had an early snow that year and they kept dropping a few flakes down onto Jerry! He kept feeling this cold wet stuff on the top of his head and about halfway through the set he says, Far-Out SNOW! I shit you not! Just one of those little moments that stick. Phil's bass was outtasight that night! We let alot of the excess crowd into the foyer between the Guthrie and Walker Art Center so they could at least hear the show and be warm and dry. It was Good Old MPLS in 1970 folks! Herb Philhoffer designed the sound set up for that Theatre and I know they had recording ability there. I SURE would LOVE to hear this show again...Any Crowd Cassette tapes out there? ~(-<) Peace, Cactuspete@mindspring.com
