A LETTER FROM THE DEAD GratefulDead-SantaClara-480 More Info Santa Clara Chicago Dear Heads, Although none of us knew it when we walked off the stage at Soldier Field on July 9, 1995, the Grateful Dead's long strange trip ended in Chicago that night. As you are aware, twenty years later, we’re returning to Chicago to properly say Fare Thee Well. But every good ending must start with a beginning. For us, it all began fifty years ago when we grabbed a bunch of instruments off the walls of a music store in Palo Alto California and began banging away on them in the back room, at night after the store had closed for the day. Since we made the decision to go back to Chicago to say our final goodbye, it has become clear to us that we first need to return to our beginnings, where we first said hello — to each other and to all of you. And so it is that we have decided to plug in for two additional shows on June 27 and 28 at Levi’s Stadium in Santa Clara, California — just a dozen miles south of where Dana Morgan’s Music Store once stood. At Levi’s — as at Soldier Field — we will have the pleasure of being joined by Trey Anastasio, Bruce Hornsby and Jeff Chimenti. Ours wasn’t just a long, strange trip — it was a VERY long, VERY strange trip. We weren’t sure what it was going to be like to put a punctuation mark on the end of it. None of us anticipated the overwhelming outpouring of love and interest following our initial announcement of the shows at Soldier Field, and we were blown away by the response. We have tried to do the right thing wherever we could for the Chicago shows by honoring the roots of where we came from, while dealing with the realities of the current times. But that’s hardly comforting when you’re shit outta luck for tickets and your only option is inflated prices on secondary ticketing websites. That would piss us off too. From the moment these shows were first talked about, we have been thinking about what we could do to honor the roots of our Deadhead experience, even in the face of changing technologies. (Remember: Ticketmaster didn’t even go online until we got out of the game.) These shows were always intended as an expression of our gratitude, to both the music and the fans, so it’s important that we get things as right as we can. We have always been proud of our in-house mail order ticketing process, and the phenomenal way our fans have built a tradition out of turning a standard envelope into a frame-worthy piece of art. Some 60,000 mail order tickets were issued for the Soldier Field shows by the good folks at Grateful Dead Ticket Sales — yet we were still crushed to see how many of your beautifully designed envelopes did not get tickets. For shows of this magnitude, it’s impossible to eliminate every scalper. However, we offer you this: Working with our partners, we are using an online ticketing platform for the Levi’s shows that will help ensure that the tickets for these shows will get into the right hands, the hands of our true fans. We believe that this process is the best way to give each of you an equal opportunity to obtain tickets at the most affordable possible prices. We are are proud to announce that 65,000 tickets per night will be available via the "online mail order" for the Levi’s shows. For the nuts and bolts, go to Dead50.net. We will not be adding any more Fare Thee Well shows. The three Chicago shows will still be our final stand. We decided to add these two Santa Clara shows to enable more of our fans to celebrate with us one more time. But this is it. We love you guys more than words can tell, and hope to see you in the Bay Area or Chicago. If you can’t make it to the shows, we are working on ways for you to still experience our Fare Thee Well, from wherever you might be. Stay tuned for those details. Gratefully yours, Billy, Bobby, Mickey & Phil

Hi campers and camperettes- I've had three different kind folks bring up the fact that the Sunshine Daydream thread seems to be written in code, or that they can't quite get a handle on the issues being discussed. Please keep in mind that our Bus driver and resident wit is channeling the not only the spirit of the GD in their space-jams, but also the personalities of Jack Kerouac, Hunter Thompson, Neal Cassady and the allegorical spaciness inherent in those many years of special Kool-aid tests that Tom Wolfe wrote about so eloquently back in'68. The idea is for all of us to think "out-of-the-box" as we prepare for this grand reunion, or as some might say, just get out-there with it all (in a friendly way). Also, the Merry Pranksters took a bit of a bus ride back in '64, and the spirit of those sketchy fragmented experiences and stories, birthed during that journey, are also prevalent in the various comments we are all reading. As we get closer to our destination, please know that there may be a gradual increase in the number of posts that actually make sense, and will help to guide us to a safe landing. Until then, keep your tin-foil hats on with antennas pointed in the proper direction, tighten those seat-belts and enjoy the ride. For we are not just the best at what we do, we are the only ones that do what we do. cheers- Geo-the-voice-of-reason-meister

The lack of a Santa Clara announcement, communication or even an acknowledgement of the possibility has driven me to depression. The lack of a response from the organization and its company/administration I consider seriously insulting. I'm taking a break from the day-to-day postings. Will check PMs and e-mails. Love you all, take care of each other...

Horse is his official stage name, verifiable on his website. But he's cool with "T" as a nickname. He's excited about the bling, but refuses to get a Mohawk. He just completed performing a masterful rendition of Bob Dylan's 115Th Dream with sunglasses on.

Not withstanding my earlier characterizations, and continuing the discussion, there are many ways one can view the thoughts and the happenstance responses that find their ways onto our fine Sunshine Daydream Home Thread. For instance, within the rambling stories that weave their collective ways through these fine forum threads, there is also a discussion, a sermon, a pleading, a dream, a dance, a song or three, and a reaching out. Whether it is from a Brother or a Sister or a Father or a Mother or a Daughter or a Son, it is real...or maybe not. But guaranteed, Somebody cares about Something, be it Real or Imagined, and they are letting all of us know. Turn up the Bass, Tune the Banjo, shut up during Space, I need a ticket, Who's on first, it's important, whatever it is. So we reads, and we posts, and we explore. We share. We anticipate, we plan, we rejoice and we get saddened....hopefully, the saddened moments are brief and fleeting, and if they are not, they are somewhat lessened by the comfort our family can give. We are fed, and we feed others. We are family. Sunshine DayDream: At Once a Thread, a Home, A Couch, A Bus, A Book, a Church, a Soapbox and Thank you very much rgrgrrgr, a dining room. A Pic-i-Nic? Certainly. over there, at the SE corner of the Buckingham Fountain, in that little grove of trees. Meet-ups start as soon as you can get there, and end after the last people say adios. Bring your own everything, and a bit more for your neighbor. A Mayor? We have several, they meet here. Not unlike the park bench over at the town square in Maintown, USA, populated with those Who Make The Important Decisions, they have this place. No one is in charge, each gets to be a blowhard as the baton is passed, and all issues are carefully pondered on before a proposal is offered or a decision is made. Each is a Mayor in His/Her own right. All of us get to drive, to give advice, to give directions or ask questions or provide answers or extend a helping hand or share an encouraging word. A Horse? Now that's another issue altogether. Hey you over there with your hand up...tell us about this horse deal. Film at Eleven...thanks for staying to the end....or is it.... PS I Miss Jerry too! geopondermeister
