Great suggestion Marye. I just listened to One O'Clock Jump and was transported. The entire recording from Carnegie Hall in 1938 with its impressive supporting cast looks tempting. What an amazing time capsule from an era that I only glimpsed hazily a la parent's and grandparent's record players in the 50's. In the meantime I'm queuing up the soundtrack from Ken Burn's "War" with jazz, big band, swing, etc. from the WWII era. It's from early 60's, but maybe some Preservation Hall Jazz Band is next. . . Oh yeah. It may be a reach, but there's a Grateful Dead connection here too: Ken Burn's "War" is followed in my iTunes list by "The Warlocks: 10/8/89". I told you it was a reach.

Marye, now you're talking....love your musical suggestions.....btw, have you heard the final Springsteen Clarence show from November 2009? Played on Miami Steve's birthday....it was special in many ways...Initially billed as the final E St show, and unfortunately foreshadowing proved correct, as it was the last time Clarence would perform with anyone, his health was failing, but the mugging he and Bruce did onstage especially during Growin Up is etched in my brain .....35 songs and over 4 hours of magic, played the Greetings from Asbury Park recording in its entirety....half of the show was dedicated to suggestions from the crowd.....if interested, pm me your email and I can send it your way in digital format....It's an audience recording from the floor but well worth a listen and the smile that the listen will bring.....

there actually is a Grateful Dead connection
to that Benny Goodman track. Back when I was en route to Red Rocks 1987, I bought a bunch of cassettes at a truck stop in, as I recall, Rock Springs, Wyoming, including a Benny Goodman anthology. It was a mixed bag of generally horribly re-re-rerecorded material from some foreign bootlegger, as I recall, but this one track, with NO PROVENANCE WHATEVER, was just stunning, even if it did sound like it was recorded in a bathtub. It took me decades to find the actual source, which was a good deal better recorded.

I need an atoll, not just AN island. Jeff...I agree Ummagumma might make it some days. I gotta check out some of the newer stuff listed here.

sounds goood, start without me if I'm tardy, on a different subject, I do not want to wade back thru all this, so I ask, what was the brew you recommended? Ballard Point or.. I don't know, started with a "B"........tiramisu is fantastic, the girl makes it wonderfully, with home made Kalua, I'll throw a dollop in the pack, it will go well with Phish taco enchiladas.

Ballast Point Brewing Company San Diego....can't go wrong with their Sculpin, Grapefruit Sculpin, Habanero Sculpin for IPA, Dorado for 2xIPA or if you like a Porter...Victory at Sea. It's coffee vanilla....breakfast in a bottle.......not cheap, 7-10% so not weak....just exactly perfect...they sell it at Consumers here and Beers of the World in Rachacha... Last summer when visiting my son in La Jolla was introduced to it, and I am hooked.... And tomorrow we'll leave the light on for you.....and my tacos start with an F....

Some highlights and lowlights (as usual the highs far outweigh the lows): 1) AMAZING Althea, I think it's the best I have ever heard! (Bobby's slide was outstanding - super cool effect he was using) 2) Jerry's voice was very good throughout. 3) Very nice Box, Phil and the boys sang it grate. 4) Jerry misses, forgets or intentionally doesn't sing "..to get to Terrapin." 5) Excellent Drums (90% Billy, Mickey was fiddling about) 6) Terrapin>drums>the other one>the Wheel (unique putting the wheel AFTER the Other one and not right after space). 6.1) Jerry tries to come in too early with "won't ya try just a little bit harder" Oops. Otherwise very nice version. 7) The other one (Jerry shredded it, great jam!) 8) Sizzling Morning Dew (Jerry really got into the vocal and guitar playing) CRAZY GOOD! (Jerry screams, wow!) 9) Lovelight was a little lackluster IMO (Bobby held way back on the Bobby Vegas routine, was waiting for him to get hammy and for some reason he didn't). Great time, second set was louder in the theater and the sound did seem to get better as the night went on. [Good thing there was in and out privileges if you know what I mean, Looks like rain was better from the outside :-)] Not a great turnout and nobody danced. I didn't want to be the first to get up out my seat so I did a little jig in my seat for the Wheel (that song makes me dance every time.)

I noticed that too about Jerry not singing that line in Terrapin. It seemed like he did it on purpose. Was there something he was responding to that happened at Alpine or on that tour that summer? I know Jerry would be tuned it to stuff like that, and communicate with the fans in interesting ways like that. Any ideas?

Does anyone know if the streaming package will be available in such a way that it would be able to be streamed from a Roku? The website says "any device" but that's a bit vague. I will get them since I can't get to Chicago, but will need to find some other way to push it from PC to TV if they don't have a Roku option... Thanks, -Dave

I will not be hearing a Who tonight. They postponed the next 3 shows due to Daltrey's voice.Hoping they reschedule when I'm not in SF or Chicago. SP

I chuckled reading that. I saw them in '82 - their "farewell" tour...

So is this a streaming live event only here? Sucks if you are there live. I was hoping for a real PPV where you can watch at home on the big screen and DVR it, not on your laptop or iPad. Perhaps that's coming? Anyone know or see this differently?

My local HD commercial free rock radio station 106.5-2FM (Subterranean) played Mama Tried on the way hope from work yesterday, and played The Wheel today at lunchtime. Coincidence? I think not... (Channeling Alpine Valley they are)

My guess is that they don't want people to DVR it so they are not offering it in the traditional pay-per-view method to cable and satellite companies. This preserves future Blu-ray package revenue (at least in their mind, and to a point). Webcast discourages this copying practice. Just my $.02 on the subject. In my opinion they should not call it "pay per view" unless it is a cable/satellite offering.

I think you're spot-on dude...and that sucks cause a true PPV would be awesome (and DVR-able). Ugh....the money grab continues I suppose....yet gratefully deserved.

I saw the Oakland show during the '82 Who tour. The Clash and T-Bone Burnett opened. Also saw another of their "farewell" tour shows in '89. Both were great. The road goes on forever and the party never ends . . . .

Last night at the movies was a good ol time! I can't wait for more! I'm going to try to be an early riser and a more disciplined person. We'll see how that goes. The latter is more likely, since I do work nights and love the stars and the moon so. In the meantime, I'm going to bed before tfont's first email and rgrrr's first post, so I know there's progress :) Nightzzz.

Happy Wednesday! New avatar, how does it look? @seeing Jerry at the movies: Yeah the magic was there alright. High energy show, good setlist for sure. I echo your sentiment about the magic. If Fare Thee Well has half the magic as the Alpine Valley stint we are in for a treat. Rhythm Devils alone should be worth the price of admission. And personally, I think Trey is gonna work out just fine and the boys will be rockin' again next month. Holy crap it's getting here, next month is Santa Clara!!!!!
