    July 2 - July 8, 2007
There is some great music this week, so we’ll jump right in.

Our first selection is from 7/3/69 in Colorado Springs, and features the best He Was A Friend of Mine these ears have ever heard. Please note that is drawn from the cassette master, as this tour was recorded only to cassette and not to reels, so it does sound a little hissy, but this rendition is so darn good, it’s easy to overlook the minor sound issues.

Exactly one year later, the Grateful Dead would find themselves cruising across Canada in a train, and the stop in Calgary on 7/3/70 had plenty of great music, including this China Cat Sunflower>I Know You Rider and this very good Lovelight. Pigpen is clearly having a blast with the Canadians at McMahon Stadium, urging them to scream, shout, and take their hands out of their pockets. Beauty, eh?

From 1981, on 7/5/81 at the Oklahoma Zoo Amphitheatre, the band opened with this funky Shakedown Street>Promised Land combination. The mix on this cassette master takes a little while to get settled, but once it does, it’s a very good listen.

A few years later, in 1984, the band was on a cool month-long run from Red Rocks in mid-June to the Greek in mid-July. Right in the middle, on 7/3/84 in Kansas City, the band played an inspired medley: Scarlet Begonias>Touch of Grey>Fire On The Mountain. Although most of us are very familiar with the version of this medley from 10 days later on 7/13/84 at the Greek, this one is certainly its equal. A few nights later, on 7/6/84 at Alpine Valley, the band played a truly exceptional post-Drums sequence, consisting of Space>Dear Mr. Fantasy>The Other One>Black Peter>Why Don’t We Do It In the Road?>Sugar Magnolia. This is a really great demonstration of how well the band could play in 1984, inspired and confident. Also from this great show on 7/6/84, by request, is the first set jam of Jack Straw>Big Railroad Blues. All of these segments from 1984 are drawn from the Beta PCM digital masters.

Like last week’s 6/30/87 post-Drums sequence with the OK-sound, exceptional performance dynamic, this also applies to this week’s 7/8/87 post-Drums sequence from Roanoke, featuring Crazy Fingers>T-t-t-t-truckin’>Comes A Time>Sugar Magnolia, Black Muddy River. Once you’re past any sound mediocrity, the music can be heard for what it is: excellent. A technical note: there’s a bit of a glitch on Black Muddy, part of the Beta PCM master. We’ll get another Black Muddy up sometime that is clear and glitch-free.

Moving forward a couple of years to the Summer Tour of 1989, we have a taste of the outstanding 7/7/89 show from JFK Stadium in Philadelphia. This show opening Hell In A Bucket>Iko Iko  is a great harbinger of the rest of this show, which is to say high-energy, focused and at times downright exceptional. There’s lots to love with this show, starting with this opener. To note, too, is this is a show for which exists exceptional 24-track audio, and beautiful video, of which both elements are consistent with the quality of the Buffalo 7/4/89 DVD release.

Like last week, we have another bit of the 5/5/78 show in New Hampshire, specifically the set closing foursome of Passenger, Brown-Eyed Woman, Lazy Lightning>Supplication. It’s such a good little show, we felt it deserved a bit of a wider appreciation.

Like the previous selection, although this next bit isn’t date-appropriate, due to overwhelming requests for more music from 1967, we’ve got this excellent trio of songs from 10/22/67 at Winterland: New Potato Caboose, It Hurts Me Too, Cold Rain and Snow. This is such an exciting time for the band, but unfortunately there isn’t too much that exists from 1967 in the vault.

Be sure to stop in next week when we’ll have more great music for you, including selections from 1972, 1976, 1977, 1981, 1984, 1985, 1989, 1991. Oh, and a taste of 1967 As always, we encourage you to write with questions, comments, suggestions or requests.

What a surprise...have looked for a tape of this show for the last decade, ever since I met a woman in Loveland, Colorado who owned a bookstore and claimed to have seen the Dead out in the backcountry of Colorado Springs in the late 60s. This was before the final issue of Dead Base came out listing this show. I always thought...well it was the 60s, maybe she was mistaken or imagining the show. She had worked (briefly) at the Family Dog in Denver during its brief life. When the final Dead Base came out it listed this show with a setlist....I always wanted to find a copy of this show to send to her because she was a tremendous woman who was willing to give me a job despite the fact that she knew that I was very sick with some kind of unexplained stomach/intestinal illness. She was also the only other person I've ever met who had an autographed copy of former Israeli PM Menachem Begin's book, "The Revolt"....what are the chances of that? A million in one, probably! Anyway, glad you put this clip up....now I can send her at least a part of the show for her memories! Thanks, very sweet. Now, speaking of mystery shows....anything in the vault from the "disputed" 1970 Memphis show? My wife is from Elvisland! Keep up the great work with the Tapers Section, you guys are doing a great job with a lot of varied clips fronm throughout the bands career. Makes me look forward to Mondays...Dead Mondays instead of Blue Mondays!

Thanks for the 7/5/81 at the Oklahoma Zoo Amphitheatre, Shakedown Street>Promised Land combination! Can you plese let us hear: Visions Of Johanna>Promised Land from Tampa Stadium April 7th 1995? This was my first and only show. I know everyone says Jerry was not in tip top form on the '95 tour but, his vocals on Visions of Johanna blew me away! Soulful to the core!

Many thanks for brightening everybody's Monday's. I second the request for 7/2/89 (foxboro). The first set is great. Even though the band opened with a rare but tasty combo of Playin>Crazy Fingers>Wang Dang Doodle, everyone that attended was talking about the wild Tennessee Jed toward the end of the set. Also, i would love to see more from the fantastic show in Roanoke 7/8/87 (and Pittsburgh too - 7/6/87).

Deer creek is a wonderful place. it was a shame what happened this day 12 years ago. I remember during desolation row the crowd outside came over the back fence like a wild pack of cockroaches. That was an uncomfortable feeling. The only thing to make it better was to zone in on the music. Which I noticed wasn't on here this week. But that's okay because it was a strange time in dead history. And i am not sure i want to relive that moment. keep up the good work. I love mondays too.

Nice selections for this week David! Thank you. The Roanoke Truckin' is always a blast to hear. definitely one of the high points of the '87 year. Quite a different spin Weir puts on the song. Well worth the listen for anyone.

Dano this is bit of trivia to heads that don't know. 7/7/89 after the show at JFK they condemned the building and no one ever played there after the dead.If you were there for the whole show you also know Hornsby put on an excellent show.

Hey, I've browsed the site off and on all day. I haven't listened to the Dead for quite awhile and I got the urge once again. But my stereo isn't hooked up. So, now I'm playing Jack Straw /Big Railroad Blues off your site. It's a pleasure, thank you. Jim

Thanks for the great music! I also have a couple suggestions: a great Viola Lee Blues, a Brother Esau, which are tough to find and is one of those lost Bobby tunes many people grew to really like, and a sweet Box of Rain that you may know of.

Have a great July 7 everyone - let's all phully enjoy the 40th ann of the summer of love, no matter where you are, remember that we really are everywhere :) lesh philling, bass great speaking of which: if there's a crisp soundboard out there of jerry's b'day show at SPAC in '04 (I think that's the right year), with that beautiful Angel Band encore, sure would love to hear it again, as i have not since i was there (release, shall it be released?!? has it been released? are you released? allgood, mellowbreath, sun salutation, now chacha); and thanks to everyone involved with that wonderful show at Bethel Woods last summer on July 9; practically brought shivers to my spine, there was so much spiritual significance in that one, full moon to boot only love can phil, and bob can spit as much as he wants imho (this one's workin weird....monnittoooor.....) healing to mark, stoked 4 kimock, roam if you want to; may the winds guide you all safely home (which, of course, is where you are right now) :) ERW

He Was A Friend of Mine. I really like this. There are many recording that give me chills (some of the 1970's Chappel Hill stuff is certainly effective) and this one does the trick. JBF

I agree w/ dumbek. I would give anything for 7/7/89 to be released on DVD. what a show. the thing i remember is that the show was even hotter than the weather. I was on the field & it was so packed that a guy next to me had passed out & couldn't even fall over. I had to convince his friend to take him out & then help him do it. killer opening to the second set box of rain>scarlet>fire.always loved the shakedown>promised land from the OK Zoo ampitheatre. another show I had on cassette which was good, but this is incredible. also very nice to finally have a place to listen to the earliest stuff 66, 67 etc with good sound quality. the playing always amazes me.
