We wanted to make sure that there were not only the tent-pole shows that fans have been demanding for decades but also ones that are slightly more under the radar, but equally excellent. We are more than pleased to announce the Grateful Dead's most ambitious release ever: 30 TRIPS AROUND THE SUN. Available as both an 80-disc boxed set and a custom lightning-bolt USB drive, the collection includes 30 unreleased live shows, one for each year the band was together from 1966 to 1995, along with one track from their earliest recording sessions in 1965. Packed with over 73 hours of music, both the boxed set and the USB drive will be individually numbered limited editions.

The 80-disc boxed set is individually numbered and limited to 6,500 copies, a nod to the band’s formation in 1965. Along with the CDs, it also includes a gold-colored 7-inch vinyl single which bookends the band’s career. The A-side is “Caution (Do Not Stop On Tracks)” from the band’s earliest recording session in 1965 with the B-side of the last song the band ever performed together live, “Box Of Rain” recorded during their final encore at Soldier Field in Chicago on July 9, 1995.

The box also comes with a 288-page book that features an extensive, career-spanning essay written by Nick Meriwether, who oversees the Dead archives at the University of California, Santa Cruz, along with special remembrances of the band submitted by fans. Also included is a scroll that offers a visual representation of how the band’s live repertoire has evolved through the years.

The USB drive version* will be shaped like a gold lightning bolt with the Grateful Dead 50th anniversary logo engraved on the side. The drive includes all of the music from the collection in both FLAC (96/24) and MP3 formats and is an individually numbered limited edition of 1,000 copies. Digital version of the book also included on USB.

Somebody on the other thread, I forget who, brought up a point about the secondary market, which was basically that Rhino depends on it to ensure they sell x number of copies of each release in a very short amount of time. This guy who wrote the article worked for a record company or something, I wish I could find the post. But it totally makes sense. Basically, Rhino needs to sellout each release in 3 or 4 weeks to not only be profitable, but to extend the life of the series. By making it limited edition, they sellout immediately and actually rely on the secondary market to be there and buy out what the individuals don't buy. It amounts to free distribution for Rhino. They sell off their 16,500 Dave's Picks in a week, and never pay a dime in distribution costs. For Rhino this means more dollars per unit and less units sold to make both make a profit and re-invest in the next release (and making the next profit). So I get it. Rhino is a very unique position, in that they have a rare product with seemingly no end, and this thing called the internet. And in fact, these very message boards are a major source of advertisement. I'm just happy I'm ahead of the curve now. I spent a lot on eBay back-filling my Dead collection. What I would be interested in, is the legalities involved in re-issuing a product that they originally sold as a limited quantity item. Even if legal, I doubt they would do it, out of fear of ruining their current, buy it now, while it's hot sales model, which is undoubtedly working. One thing I feel confident in, is that if Rhino felt that re-releasing FW 69 Complete would be profitable in the long run, they would do it (and perhaps they will). But I imagine it's a tricky balance, as Morning Sun said - never underestimate the turmoil of breaking a promise to the original people who bought it (of whom I am not one - fucker cost me 400 bucks). Plus I'm sure they all have a dozen copies of all of them that they're saving for 10 years from now when they're going for a grand on eBay ;-)

FW 69 re-release

Not sure what the exact wording was when they first released it, but some of the music included in the set has been available on the 3 disc compilation.Rhino could produce a set with all 4 FW 69 shows, add 2-11-69 Fillmore East release, change the name and add a disclaimer that would say something like "portions of this set was previously released as Ltd Edition FW box set, etc." Lots of "limited Edition only", and "promo only" music has been re-released that way.

FWIW, let me echo SpaceBro's (and others) sentiment: I own FW'69, and enjoy it immensely.By all means, re-release it, so that more people can enjoy it. I do not mind scalping, or a secondary market. In general, I don't mind limited editions, bonus discs with first runs etc; companies can run their business as they see fit. But I'm a capitalist through and through: if more people want it, and Rhino can make more money, by all means let's do it. I know that the secondary market, at least in this particular case, exists bcause Rhino said that FW'69 would never be released (in any form?) again. Some people would feel cheated if, after paying a lot (NOT to Rhino though), it was re-released. But surely most Deadheads would want other Deadheads to be able to acquire this set, and there should be some way around it (cheaper packaging or whatever) to get past this?

Yes, reissue it as a limited edition of 16,000.$130 each + shipping and sales taxes where applicable. For that $130 you'll get the four shows - 2/27, 2/28, 3/1 & 3/2/1969 in 4 tye-dyed design artwork, thin cardboard type sleeves with a simple booklet with only the song titles, the track times, the songwriters credits and publishers credits with two or three photos, WITHOUT AN ESSAY, all enclosed in a lightweight cardboard case with artwork similar to the original 2005 issue.

shrine vinyl et al...

glad to hear the 69 shrine vinyl release sounds so good. i plan on picking one up soon. as for the 69 box, and other limited releases, i think rhino needs to view their 'investment' in the grateful dead as being holders of something culturally significant. limited edition stuff should be just the initial physical product, but everything should be available via download. as i've said before, they should act like smithsonian/folkways, where nothing they have ever released goes out of print. you can't go to their site and order an original woody guthrie or leadbelly record, those have been out of print forever, but you can download it or order a custom burned cd. there is nothing you can not order. i believe rhino is just waiting for the last 150 usb's to sell, then they will offer all 30 shows via download. as for the 69box, i don't remember their wording, but a physical product probably can't, or shouldn't, be re-released that way, but all 4 shows should be put out via download, if the suits think they can legally do it. if not, lesson learned....

Dennis Wilmot, feel free to ramble on, you made some good points in a funny way. it sounds like I may have been one of the same two people seated next to you at shows;)For my two cents, I have the 30 trips box and it wouldn't bother me a bit if they made another production run in the future, with or without all the extras. I didn't buy it as an investment, I purchased it because I wanted to have the music and after missing out on FW69 I knew I would regret not having it more than I would regret spending the money. At some point I would like to pick up FW69, but there is a limit to what I can pay and feel OK about the purchase. I understand that the limited edition model is probably what makes the ongoing releases possible to this extent, so it is what it is, but it seems that they could set it up so that it would be possible to reissue things after some period of time. As far as copying limited edition releases, I guess the band makes their money when the original sale occurs and are unaffected by any subsequent transactions, so there's that.

Re-releases, Limited Editions, illegal copies, ebay prices

I throw my 2 cents into this, I agree with those that say a release of limited edition stuff as maybe a digital download is just fine with me. As always if price is the limiting factor I can not believe you can't find someone to make you a copy. Some say "oh that's illegal", sounds like corporate lawyer talk to me. I agree you shouldn't be knocking out 1,000 copies of something and selling them at the local flea market, but to slip a buddy a copy, fuck no. I remember when people didn't even think twice about making a cassette copy for a friend. Of course the "industry" hated that, they even tried to get a "tax" on blank tapes to cover the "losses" they were suffering. What hogwash! The record companies seem to be doing fine! Ebay prices will disappear or come down if people stop buying them, just like tickets for sporting events (which sports fan seem to believe are way out of whack). Remember when FM first took off and stations would play a perfect album side, even told you when to start your tape. I'm sorry if the record industry makes a product that is easy to copy. Why didn't they just keep producing records? You couldn't copy them as easily as cd. Because they wanted to squeeze out the free music of radio, cd's people would buy more of because you could take them in your car. Did the industry ever return money for those shit 8 tracks that they sold? Or even the shit cassettes they sold? Those store bought tapes NEVER lasted long, but a good maxell made at home lasted forever? I still have cassettes I made from 1980 that play just fine. But the few store bought ones I got the cases always warped in the heat.I think I can most assuredly say that if you could shove a new caddy into a port of the computer and have it shit out a new caddy, everyone would have a new caddy and be saying fuck GM. (probably a lot of people already saying that) You don't see anyone making "illegal" copies of books and you could zerox a whole book. I'm surprise the corporate lawyers haven't tried to shut down public libraries, since they allow people to listen, read and view all copyright material without paying any fee to the owner of the copy right material. There was a point when Mickey Mouse was about to enter the public domain and Disney just couldn't let that happen, so they had congressman Sony Bono push thru a revision of the copyright laws that allowed them to keep the copyright. (see - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Copyright_Term_Extension_Act ) Technically if you owned a bar, you couldn't play cd's you own there without a fee being paid to industry. CD's YOU OWN! Can you imagine if you bought a repair guide for a car you owned and you got a second car of the same make and being told you couldn't use that manual to fix the second car, that the use of the manual was only for the first car. You have that same thing with software you buy, you buy the package but can't use it where ever you want, only once (maybe 3 times for some) Sorry I've rambled a bit, but corporations piss me off. They want risk socialize and profits privatized. They want to be citizens with no one responsible for jail time. Fuck them! Record profits and the world still fights for crumbs. On the illegal front, I get a chuckle out of this. I thought it was illegal to bring "drugs" into shows or buy and sell them. Oh, I forgot nobody who went to dead shows did drugs. Like nobody in England watches Doctor Who. The show has been on for 50 years and nobody admits they watch it! Just like back in the .net days, nobody on net.dead did drugs! I must have always got seated next to the same other 2 people who did :-) Once again sorry for the excessive rambling.

Just to be clear...

I am fully supportive of a re-release of the FW69 box. The whole reason I have the info that I have is that (being the anal retentive completist that I am) I emailed David Lemieux to ask why in the hell the box set hadn't been reissued. Any deadhead that has looked at eBay in the last 5 years can see that this box is in absurdly high demand. I hate the idea of limited releases and find it absurd that they would limit anything. The only thing that does is drive up the price on secondary markets (just look at the 30 trips box on eBay).

Order Freeze

I spoke with customer service. She said they have the I.T. guys there now and are working to get it resolved. Best she could do was get my email address and let me know if it went through. :( Really helpful though :)

The Website has Crashed....

....I've gotten a similar "spinning" notification that the 30 Trips Box order is being processed, please wait....then nothing happens....but when I check my credit card online, it notes this charge is pending. I discussed this with customer service; the nice lady noted that indeed this has been happening and it was the result of the website crashing due to this activity and all of us wanting to get our hands on the box at the same time. The nice lady noted that just because my card has a pending charge, this DOES NOT mean I actually purchased it; in fact, she said unless I receive an email confirmation, consider it NOT ordered! She said a call back to GD Customer Service once it is back up and running will remove the erroneous pending charges. She DID NOT say, however, when this would be remedied online, only to keep checking back later in the day or tomorrow. So, unfortunately, anyone who gets the spinning NON confirmation, we're out of luck until an actual email confirmation is received.

Must say I like this release. I've purchased every official release almost as a matter of conscience given all the free music the boys gifted us with. Not always pleased, but, if only as an investment, I could get a great return selling things on ebay, etc. Here is my question if someone in authoritie can answer: is the $799 immediately scooped from account, or is it not charged until it is close to ship date? Trying to remember from the Fillmore 69 Box and E72 Box, but can't. Thanks! Davey Concepcion for Hall of Fame. It's time. Scott

Ok - who here wants to hear everything in full quality FLAC? 24/96 is on the USB chip. This box set is pretty ridiculously priced, but what if chipped in (as suggested earlier in the thread) and got the USB chip?

My order processed, took a while...

My order did process and I have the confirmation page printed out and the email to prove it! I ordered right at 10AM when I first saw it announced. Took a while, thought it wouldn't go through but it eventually did. Of course my wait was only an agonizing 7-8 minutes or so. And to answer the oft asked question - your credit card will NOT be charged until the box ships. Now, how to raise that kind of cash by mid-September. Anyone need some blood or plasma? Slightly used kidney?

Just looked at my email box and saw that my order confirmation came in an hour and a half before the bulletin notice that this was going on sale. Sometimes its good to have a desk job!

Justification

Hmm: $700 for 30 shows = $23 per show release. With that math, it's not really an inflated price to pay, nor really a deal. Just too much at one time for most. I would assume most of us have the Dave's picks subscription which is $25 per show (and less "limited edition") or drool worthy than this package. I suppose the even rarer USB justifies it's same cost as the cd's, but yes I would have thought that would have been cheaper. Put me in the camp that has the significant others that would kill them if this was purchased. Final thoughts: Cool product and tribute to a great band/legacy. I also like the 4-cd set, that will sort of be like a So Many Roads part 2. Thanks for all of your efforts Dave! Do you really have to buy your own box!?

The people who designed this site ate an ounce of shrooms during the planning, design, and implementation phases. A professional commerce site that can't handle a few thousand simultaneous orders? Seriously? Outsource the ordering process if you can't do it right.

I don't yet have a confirmation email, so I am guessing none went through. Customer Service said they can clean it up for me if it was ordered multiple times. Though I may actually keep one USB and one Box if that was the case.

...when you realize that the thing powering the online ordering process is that half-turtle, half-VW van creature. He's grown tired in his ripe old age. And yeah, for what it's worth, my wife will probably flip..no, no probably about it...flip, when she finds out, but what I have come up with in my afternoon genius session is that I will explain it this way...honey, for the next three months or so, I will not buy a single thing. I feel very lucky, after waiting for over an hour and 45 minutes (Your order is being processed, please wait) I finally received an order confirmation email. The box set will serve as an expensive consolation prize for not scoring tickets to any of the shows in Chicago. Not Fade Away!

...a very good consolation prize and a good way to look at it. Which gives us all another possible explanation for our better halves...that we are actually SAVING money since we're not buying concert tickets (like the ones in Santa Clara are currently going for for instance). With this sound reasoning, we can't lose. I love it when a plan comes together.

Processing problems

I've emailed Customer services as no sign of order confirmation. Frankly they need to confirm the precise status of orders - the idea that they may have multiple orders (or not) with multiple charges (or not) lurking around waiting to go on your credit card is not very encouraging. I don't mind re-ordering if the original order did not go through and no charges were made but I am not going to risk it only to find multiple charges on my card later in the year.

Yeah I agree that 9/10/91 was not the best 91 pick. It has the guest appeal but other shows from the year standout more to me performance wise. The set list doesn't compare well at all but the performance on 9/14/91, for example, is superior. 6/17 and 4/1 compare well on both fronts. The up shot of course is that we can look forward to those to be released some other time perhaps. Signed - another picky dead head.

Be creative and resourceful, people!

The clouds have parted and the Holy Grail emerges! Not even a moment's hesitation for me to pull out my credit card for this one. I've been prepared for this moment for months. The signs have been in place for a massive release all year. Many have said they squirreled away $500 bucks in anticipation of a release of this scale. Smart. But many others are shocked that there's a dreamboat product sitting in front of us for $700?! Sheesh... Color me unsympathetic. Sure, it's a lot of coin, but If you want this badly enough, you will find a way to make it happen! For instance... I have several friends that have been debating with me what the set would look like and its scale. We closed in on a Betty Box or a career-spanning Box, each with 50+ discs. We talked about sharing the cost of the box, with the person that orders it up front (and shoulders the debt and pays for shipping, that would be me) getting to keep the physical box and its documentation. Then, we pass around the discs for each to rip in whatever format we're interested in. Lastly, we'll have a lottery to determine who gets to keep the CDs from each show. We will draw for the picking order and take turns choosing shows, one at a time, until they are all divvied. Each of us gets all the music and 1/4 of the CDs for under $200. And each of us gets to read the documentation that comes with it at least once (which is all I need). For those that are bummed you can't buy individual shows, HAVE NO FEAR! It seems pretty obvious to me, given the iTunes listing this morning, that the system will be set up to sell shows, and even SONGS, individually on iTunes once the boxes are sold out. If you want the cynical justification... don't you think they'd make a lot more money by making a la carte offerings after the box is sold out? Hell yeah. As for the negativity swirling here, let's keep this in perspective. This is a very special thing the Dead world is doing for us. Less than $10 per disc. Demonizing TPTB as a money grabbing corporation out of touch with its fanbase, calling anyone who can afford this set a yuppy, and best of all, comparing GD management to the Koch brothers (REALLY, Pat fox?)... sour grapes. Another positive I get from this set is that two other suspicions for this box are still open to being tapped in the future. Namely, I see returned Betty tapes being released, and the '77 fan in me holds out hope for a second May '77 Box in the future. If there's one thing the Grateful Dead have taught me over the years, it's to be GRATEFUL. I, for one, am extraordinarily grateful that a band that has not performed in 20 years continues to feed me with wonderful memories and to keep the band relevant and vital in my life. Thank you to everyone that put hard work into making this and every release happen!

Probably only stating the obvious here- But if an order didn't go through, then how is the credit card charged? So, no confirmation email, no order number, but at least I was charged for it. There, I feel so much better about this. Ha.

Hah, finally a show from an underrated year everyone thinks is the worst. I remember it well, Phil steps up to the mike before the encore and says something like... "Bobby's strings are broken, Jerry's amp is blown and my mind's blown! So we'll see you tomorrow." The next day they played One More Saturday Night, with Bobby saying they'll start with last night's encore.

Less Demand

I'll pass and leave it open for 6500 others. We all know what these guys are capable of. No need to prove it with a single monster release. Prolonged suspense is a good thing. I would have preferred the remastered shows released at 1 per every 12 days throughout the year. Or 2-3 month. $23.- $30. each with the same art work for ease of packaging. Take what you want and leave rest.Striking while the interest is high. Enjoy to those that grab it.

2 Charges - No Confirmation

Please tell me you clicked "submit order" 4x. I am about to pull the trigger on this, but have only been holding off in light of the problems people are mentioning. And, although I have no detailed knowledge on how this works, I don't think it's an actual charge, but just an authorization, which will drop off after a period of time. I don't think we are able to use PayPal or any type of debit cards for this one...if so, then I really feel for those with multiple "authorizations."

'being processed" But is it, really, GDM?

So if I'm getting that "your order is being processed, please wait" for over twenty minutes now in my one browser window, does it eventually go through? Don't want try again and be charged more than once and then have to deal with calling them.

Per customer service, you MAY still have an order even without an email because the crash of the server prevented all from getting processed and emails. While those who have an email do have an Order, it is possible those without (at this point in time) an email MAY still have a processed order once the cybersmoke clears.

My Cart is Empty

When I click on "ADD TO CART" for either the box set or USB nothing gets added to my cart! Is this a symptom of "the system is down" or "sold out"? I'm thinking the former. Also, Beethoven on the phone is nice!

I've been processing for over an hour.

kbar, there is no use putting an order in, you are going to get a preauth on your card and no order to show for it. Hopefully they have taken action to prevent ordering. Boxes can't be sold out because the system has been down since right after the email went out. Mr. Jack Straw, I have 3 windows processing, one has been going for 3 hours. The others for less, no luck with a confirmation on any, and I closed 1 window for good measure. Up to 3000 in preauths now....
