Jerry's Back, and We've Got Him!
It’s been a long, long time since there’s been a Jerry Garcia music release, but the good news is that a new day is dawning, the pipeline to the Garcia vault is open again, and we hope to offer you quality JG tunes as often as we can! Dead.net, in conjunction with the recently formed Garcia Family LLC (mainly Jerry’s daughters), are pleased to announce their exclusive partnership, and to celebrate the occasion, we’re picking up right we left off—with a new addition to the popular “Pure Jerry” series. For those of you keeping score, this one is #8, and it marks the first official full release of acoustic music from Garcia and John Kahn.

The setting is the wonderful 2,000-seat Marin Veteran’s Memorial Auditorium in San Rafael on February 28, 1986, the last of 12 acoustic shows John and Jerry played that winter. It’d been a solid tour, with sold-out concerts in a number of cool East Coast venues. But this was a hometown show—literally—so the air was both relaxed and festive. The twelve songs collected here on a single disc are the complete two-set show from that night, nearly 70 minutes of music; a nice blend of old folk tunes, a Dylan number and Hunter-Garcia classics. Particularly noteworthy in that last category are the epic “Bird Song” and rockin’ “Run for the Roses.” Soundboard copies of this show have not been in circulation before.

Check out the Bird Song. Wow. Simply wow. When I saw this release announced I thought it looked a bit...odd or unusual or something. Just not what I expected. Having heard the Bird Song I'm pretty tempted to get it. Not bad for a sick, exhausted guy with just an acoustic guitar.

I miss that man so much. I already ordered the CD (along with the '68 Carousel show), but I'm listening to the samples online and this is like nothing I've ever heard. It is like he's sitting right next to me, which I didn't expect to experience until I get to heaven. Thanks for the taste. Great release!

This is great and a really nice choice as some of Jerry's acoustic shows were fabulous and looking forward to the crystal clear sound. Keep them coming and if you can do digital downloads as well that is always appreciated... Looking for a rare, not circulating, amazing show to release... Check out 2/13/80 Palace Theatre, Albany.... Would love to see that one make its way to our ears... Its a classic! Marty

who have been having issues with the shipping charges on this, here's a message from our friends at Rhino, who are on the case: "We are currently working to re-implement a more affordable shipping option on international orders. If you placed an order to be shipped outside of the US, we will contact you. If you haven’t yet due to the lack of a lower cost shipping option, please hang in there!"

Received my copy yesterday. My sound system is above average and decodes HDCD. The sound quality of this CD is just fantastic. Rich and full sound making it seem like Jerry & John are in your room playing for you. I found the first half of the setlist sweet but as was usual for these shows a bit drawn and slow and not really showcasing what jerry can do with a guitar other than make it sing better than anyone ever has. The second half of the show turns around and adds in quality Jerry licks in a more up tempo pace. For me the real highlight to this CD is the last three songs. Bird Song is soooo good. Jerry cranks and you can close your eyes and remember what it was like when he created magic. That is followed by excellent versions of Ripple and Good Night Irene. I would give this a 4 out of 5 holding back a start just for the setlist and slightly lethargic start. Overall its great and highly recommend folks get this... I again make my plea to the powers that be to relelase the JGB 2/13/80 show from the palace theatre in albany...

I think you know what the point of the posting of the financial breakdown relates to. Personally, I think we should all get over whatever animosity there is toward a certain individual, and just be happy that "Jerry's Back," so to speak. However the family decided to make peace is none of our business and I believe Jerry-- wherever he is-- is pleased that the shows are being made available. Is the head dead yet? I agree. Why post it? Ain't nobody's bidness but their own. Conversation is always more interesting than recitation, so speak your mind and not someone else's.

Watch these videos about the disaster that is Jerry's estate....this project is amazing for 2 reasons: 1) its about the music (not ties, ice cream etc), and 2) it goes to Jerry's daughters, not the Koon (Jerry's widow). Just watch these 4 parts and you'll understand...and hopefully purchase: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=m7LFlhdzBPE&feature =related http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xf-g31nsTb4&feature =related http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yhimdkhvUNE&feature =related http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=T0uG7B7WwAg&feature =related

Thanks for the post GFDEAD, that was pretty interesting. Although I admit that I am ignorant of all the facts, and that I do not know her personally, there is something about that woman that makes me cringe. She is, to me, the anti-Jerry. At least Annabelle appears to have alot of Jerry in her. Regardless, I will buy the Jerry stuff because I love the music, "pure" and simple. that is a pretty interesting little doc, and yes, she makes me cringe too - especially knowing she's the one responsible for the Trinketization of Jerry (I always thought those damn dolls were ridiculous, now even more so). But what's with the Brewer & Shipley song for the outro? The temptation is to not want to give her a dime after all she's done, but I must admit that even if every penny for the Pure Jerry series went to her, I'd still buy 'em. I guess lucky for her she can sit back and collect on the trinkets.

on Brewer and Shipley's "Tarkio Road". Just a guess as I don't have the CD to know the outro, you are talking about but I do believe he played on that tune of theirs. The Truth is realized in an instant, the act is practiced step by step.

Have others received both the Carousel Road trips and the Garcia/Khan CD? I have not received mine yet and just want to confirm that they have been sent out before pressing with more questions. (I already dropped a line to Customer Service on 3/31 but have not received a reply...)

and fast delivery too ! Have had it for several days already, and it's a great show with excellent sound quality. The recording has a very strong "you're in the room" quality to it. Also, I see a lot here about the family's estate squabbles since Jerry's passing- I wouldn't wish a contentious estate settlement process on anyone. I just hope the new arrangements are as fair and agreeable as they can be to all parties, and I'm very happy to see new Jerry releases underway ! -Tommo

that's right, I forgot Jerry's all over that Tarkio Road record - I know he's on the title track, he's probably on "one toke" too. This release sounds incredible - someone pointed out that this is a period when Jerry's in poor health and poor voice; history says that's true but you certainly wouldn't know it by listening to this. Both his voice and his playing are top notch here.

Actually, Jerry is NOT on "One Toke Over the Line"; common misconception....He plays steel on "Oh Mommie"

I've always loved the Garcia/Kahn shows and this one sounds great. As others have pointed out, Jerry was not in good health at this time, and some of these shows are kind of a mess to be honest. But Jerry and John seem in sync at this show and the sound is incredible. While folks have said that the first songs start off slowly, I'm loving the "Deep Elem" and "Little Sadie." Jerry's playing is very precise and the slow tempo, I think, suits his weariness at this time. I'm looking forward to a steady stream of releases from the Garcia Family. I actually think of early '86 as a relatively healthy time for him. He was weaning himself off of substances and in a really good mood onstage (especially with the Dead in the first half of the year), and the health issues that would lead to his near-death in the summer hadn't manifested themselves yet... I think he sounds alert, focused and downright spunky here, especially compared to the '84 G&K shows...

Does anybody know why Jerry's website has been offline for months? Has D. Coons struck again?......Don't mean to sound too negative but these days there's always some type of legal bullshit at the center of everything she does. By the way, really happy about this release. It is really very long overdue. Fans of the most recorded guitarist in history shouldn't have to wait so long for new material. I guess it doesn't really matter...anyway...

Thank-you for making these shows available. Mr. Garcia's guitar playing is the sweetest I'll hear in this lifetime. My first purchase would have to be here (LLC) and of course Buffalo 4/21/09. Grate tour!

This is a beautiful disc. Just lovely to have on if you're in an acoustic mood, a Jerry mood, a melancholy mood, or a mirthful one. Bird Song and Goodnight Irene are worth the price of the disc. And I think this Little Sadie has the most verses of any I've heard! One of my favorites, as well. Thanks for this release! Jerry's voice sounds great, too.

I'm glad, too, because this may help dispel the myth that this period was a musical throwaway. It certainly wasn't, as anyone who caught the Spring tour can attest. No, Jerry didn't look well (the lazy eye and all).....but he was still doing some great playing (and singing) and many of his solos were longer in '86 then they would be for the rest of the 80's as the band tightened things up. I wistfully recall trying to catch Jerry & Kahn at D.A.R. Constitution Hall in Dec 85.....sadly, we never got out of the car and only once passed by the venue as we were trapped in that hellacious treadmill of traffic that is Washington, D.C. There was absolutely nowhere to even pull over to look at a map, it was just keep moving around the circles........finally we got sling-shotted out of the maelstrom with little chance of going back. We didn't have tickets, anyway, but at that time that wasn't so much a problem. I later heard they played Ripple from my friend Anne.

Why is the JGF LLC stated as: "Garcia Family LLC (mainly Jerry’s daughters)"? Why is it important to specicify the daughters? Does MARKET RESEARCH show stuff sells better without mention of Debra? Its insulting. It reeks of dishonesty. Do not get me wrong, I am not Debra bashing, actually now I've said it I realize its mostly insulting, or should be, to her. Someone help me, why should I care? What's wrong here, help me get my finger on it. Please. Its just troubling. Thanks, Roger

previous releases of Jerry Garcia live shows were put out mainly with authorization of Debra Koons Garcia...for reasons only known to her she would NOT allow anything released when she wasn't with Jerry...Jerry's daughters fought her on this and many other things and eventually had her removed as executor of his estate, hence more music from many different era's...
