Hey, just caught your summer post about the Dan. Sounds like a great show, especially with Larry Carlton! Just saw one of the Toronto shows from Rent Tour - the Royal Scam. It was great! I wrote a review here if you're interested:http://sseeeeiinnggddoouubbllee.blogspot.com/ You'll also find blog entries from shows I've seen from various bands, including The Dead at MSG, Nassau, and Rothbury from Spring Tour. He was also one of my great show buddies in the '70s, and the guy who introduced me to the fact that there were tapes of Dead shows! just a heads up if you're in the Bay Area--on September 4, David Gans's old band the Reptiles will reunite to honor the memory of founding member Al Feldstein, who passed on a couple months back. It's at the Starry Plough in Berkeley (as the name suggests, a neighborhood pub awash in Irish revolutionary slogans...) at 9 p.m. Venue is tiny, band is good, I'm looking forward to seeing some old pals. Music is Dead and other covers as well as originals that are darn good. Hope to see some of you there!

STANFORD LIVELY ARTS LAUNCHES 2008–09 SEASON ON SUNDAY, OCTOBER 5 WITH BRANFORD MARSALIS AND MARSALIS BRASILIANOS Concert at Memorial Auditorium features Grammy-winning saxophonist Branford Marsalis and members of the Philarmonia Brasileira in a celebration of Brazilian composer Heitor Villa-Lobos; Brazilian-themed reception and gala dinner follow the performance Single tickets go on sale Tuesday, September 2 Stanford, CA, August 22, 2008—Stanford Lively Arts opens its 2008–09 season on Sunday, October 5 with Marsalis Brasilianos, a vibrant musical dialogue across the Americas featuring saxophone virtuoso Branford Marsalis with members of the Philarmonia Brasileira, led by Gil Jardim. The performance takes place at 2:30 p.m., at Memorial Auditorium, and will be followed by a Brazilian-themed gala celebration including live music and a seated gourmet dinner with special guests.            Commemorating the 50th anniversary of Heitor Villa-Lobos’ death, Marsalis Brasilianos is an innovative new project that brings together the Grammy-winning, New Orleans–born jazz artist and the esteemed Brazilian ensemble, finding a fertile meeting ground in the composer’s music. They perform Villa-Lobos’ Fantasia for Saxophone (Soprano) and Piano or Orchestra (1949), the Suite for Strings (1912), and Bachianas Brasileiras No. 5 (1938). Also on the program are Darius Milhaud’s La création du monde, op. 81 (1923) and Scaramouche for Saxophone (Alto) and Orchestra, op. 165c (1937).            Immediately following the performance, Lively Arts will usher in the new season with Festa Brasileira, an elegant Brazilian-themed gala amid the fan palms of the Ford Alumni Gardens at Arrillaga Alumni Center, 326 Galvez Street. The event begins with a 5:00 p.m. reception, with cocktails and live music featuring two esteemed Brazilian-born artists: vocalist Claudia Villela and guitarist Ricardo Peixoto. At 6:00 p.m., the Brazilian festa continues with a gourmet seated dinner. Proceeds benefit Lively Arts’ artistic and education programs.              This presentation is generously supported by Fred and Stephanie Harman and Microsoft Corporation. ABOUT THE ARTISTS Jazz luminary and three-time Grammy Award-winning saxophonist Branford Marsalis was born in New Orleans into one of the city’s most distinguished musical families, which includes patriarch/pianist/educator Ellis and siblings Wynton, Delfeayo, and Jason. Known for his broad musical scope, Marsalis has become increasingly active as a soloist with such acclaimed ensembles as the symphony orchestras of Chicago, Detroit, and Düsseldorf and the Boston Pops. His nearly two-dozen recordings in various styles have received numerous accolades, with his most recent CD, the Grammy-nominated Braggtown, acknowledged as his quartet’s greatest recorded achievement to date. In addition to spending two years touring and recording with Sting and serving as musical director of The Tonight Show with Jay Leno, Marsalis has collaborated with the Grateful Dead and Bruce Hornsby, acted in films including Throw Mama from the Train and School Daze, provided music for Mo’ Better Blues and other films, and hosted National Public Radio’s syndicated program Jazz Set.            The Philarmonia Brasileira was founded in 1994 by conductor Gil Jardim, whose work is distinguished by its technique, excellence, and clarity of purpose as well as Jardim’s strong understanding of the fusion between ethnic and erudite Brazilian music elements. In October 2005, Jardim released a CD with Philarmonia Brasileira reconstructing the first concert Villa-Lobos held in Paris, in 1924. Two of the tracks on the CD, the recordings of Pensées d’enfant and Epigramas irônicos e sentimentais, were being released for the first time. The CD, titled Villa-Lobos in Paris, was awarded the Diapason d’Or from the well-known magazine Diapason. In addition, Jardim has appeared with the Brooklyn Orchestra in New York, the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra in London, and the Camerata Mexicana in Mexico. TICKETS Tickets for the Marsalis Brasilianos concert, presented by Stanford Lively Arts on Sunday, October 5 at 2:30 p.m. at Memorial Auditorium, are $40/$48/$56; Premium: $76 (adult), $20/$24; Premium: $38 for (Stanford student). Single tickets for this and other Lively Arts events go on sale to the public Tuesday, September 2.            Half-price tickets are available for young people age 18 and under and discounts are available for groups and non-Stanford students. Contact the Stanford Ticket Office at 650-725-ARTS (2787), or visit Lively Arts online at livelyarts.stanford.edu.           Individual tickets for Festa Brasileira, Stanford Lively Arts’ Season Opening Gala, are $500 per person and include preferred performance seating. For more information on the gala, including purchase of complete tables, contact Mary Ancell at ancell@stanford.edu or (650) 723-7247. Branford just gets into your head and lifts it up and keeps it there. so fitting on many fronts. See, I have that magical feeling already, the " I have tickets, i'll sleep when i'm dead feeling".

Hello Everyone, There is a camp grounds in the ozark region of missouri that has a Grateful Dead tribute band called "The Schwag", has anyone ever heard of them? I'm not to sure as to the amount of exposure this particular group has, but i can say that in July of this year i went down to Camp Zoe and expierenced all that Schwagstock has to offer, it turns out its the closetest to heaven i think ive ever been, lol. It was my first time to a festival of that kind and i'd have to say i cant wait to go back September 12th and 13th. There will be 2 days of great live music featuring Pink Floyd, Led Zeppelin cover bands as well as the schwag, whom the festival is named after. Anyone on this site familar with Schwagstock and if so will you be attending in September?

these guys just came across my radar this morning, and while we'll probably eventually do something a bit more formal, I'm posting here for now because they've got gigs coming up next week!

www.myspace.com/castofclowns

Believe it and Not

Cast of Clowns set up the big top on holy grounds, where they juggle songs, work live with wild jams, and perform high in the air. A converging of talents immersed in reverent irreverence, the Cast of Clowns fun machine consists of psychedelic tricksters who helped create the jamband world as well as emerging voices of what’s to come.

Formed around new original material of short story/song writer, Craig Wright, (Redemption Center), Greg Anton, (Zero), and Robert Hunter, (Grateful Dead), the Cast features Jeff Pevar, (guitarist for Crosby Stills and Nash, Phil and Friends, Jazz is Dead and Ray Charles), as well as Melvin Seals, (famed organist of The Jerry Garcia Band).

Good friends hang out in clown alley as well. Grateful Dead’s Bill Kreutzmann played the entire show at the Clowns’ last performance at Oregon Country Fair. The Clowns keeps new and original material center ring. Surprises thrill and delight. Edges are pushed then blurred. Mysteries are celebrated. Then the warmth of a gentle, or not-so-gentle, ballad begins to billow the circus tent.

The tour brings Mickey Hart, Zakir Hussain, Sikiru Adepoju, and Giovanni Hidalgo together again in a reunion sparked by the 15th anniversary of the ground-breaking album Planet Drum. Released in 1991 on the Rykodisc label it went on to earn the first-ever Grammy Award in the World Music category. The tour is the groups first in almost a decade. It also marks the resumption of an artistic relationship between Mickey Hart and Zakir Hussain that goes back to the late 1960s. "This is a deep drumming groove. We're taking the archaic rhythm worlds into outer space. The Global Drum Project explores rhythm and noise; it's a sound yoga of processed acoustic percussion headed straight for the trance zone that becomes a dance of ancient and modern worlds. Deep drumming is a skeleton key into these realms." -Mickey Hart Advance Tickets: $40 Gold Circle, $30 Reserved Day of Show Ticket Price: $43 Gold Circle, $33 Reserved GET TIX HERE: http://www.birchnorthparktheatre.net/calendar_page.htm#Ticket_options

I looked on global drumming website, just listed 2007 dates. noticed they came last year to Zellarbach, the most beautiful site, and some friends went to Overture in madison, also a wonderful venue. Do you know where they will be drumming? This sounds like an evening to soothe the vibes. peace,pk

Just went to see todd rundgren, small old movie theatre, reminded me of the mid 70's shows in sf. 4 days in april at the waldorf and such, saw dozens of those. He was abosutly at the top of his game. Kasim was there on keyboards and vocals, Prarie Prince on drums, Jesse Gras on guitar, and a young lady, Racheal on bass and vocals, who by the way was just magical. An absolutly wonderful effort by a great songwriter, musician, producer and one of the great minds in music of this time. The show was awe inspiring, invigorating, and very warm. All in one. Don't miss this one.He is in the moment of our times and is making powerful music that reflects it. peace,pk

marye:As the subject says - interesting that I just found your post about Cast of Clowns. They will be here on Maui next week with Barry Sless. It was a real treat to have Barry and the David Nelson Band here a month or so ago. I'm looking forward to hear Cast of Clowns. I've listened to some of their tracks on various websites so I'm getting anxious. BTW, I've noticed that you are a pretty active poster from the Northwest. As such, what do you think of Supertrout? A friend back in Eugene recommended them to me a coupla months ago and apparently they are getting pretty big around Oregon. I was lucky to catch their show at Charley's in Pa'ia last month. I enjoyed meeting a bunch of the band members and Paul Biondi on horns was a real treat. I recorded and posted the show on archive.org. Anyway, whaddya think?

I'll at least check them out at Voyage East (Pauwela Cannery) for the Saturday show. The weather here has been pretty crappy (for Maui) over the last few months so I'm not too sure about getting advanced tix for the Friday night outdoor show - right on the water - on the north shore!!! We're talking 65 to 70 degrees cold and rain! :-) Aloha from Maui!

Was simply unbefuckinliveable ! This was a 'make-up show' for a show that was canceled last November. Neil said "some rocket scientist booked us here on election day". So Neil showed up tonight to make up for it. And wow, did he ever. First a band called Everest played and they were acceptable. Then the Neville Bros just tore it up for about 8 songs. I must catch them as headliners to get a longer set. Just tremendous. Then Neil, first song out of the gate Mr. Soul, then When You Dance, and it just went on and on and on, new stuff like Fuel Line, Light a Candle, Mother Earth, Spirit Road, interspersed with Pochahontas & Me, Tonight's the Night, Cinnamin Girl, a scathing 20 minute Down By the River. His guitar-work and vocals are as good as I have ever heard from Neil. In the middle of his electric onslaught he picks up the acoustic and the band leaves and we get "Needle and the Damage Done" then Ben Keith and the band come back and treat us to 'Old Man' and 'Heart of Gold' complete with Ben's ethereal pedal steel guitar work. There were about a dozen other songs, old and new that I can't recall. BUT for the encore Neil and his band played a stratospheric "Day in the Life" and shreds his guitar with feedback breaking every string on that crescendo in that Beatles tune. It was masterful, incredible, Neil's a guitar hero of the highest order, no shit, it was that amazing. Don't miss Neil Young if he is coming anywhere that you can get to. I was floored. And next week I get to see THE DEAD ;o} and then I rest up for July and the 10klakefest with Widespread Panic, DMB, Wilco and many others. This is gonna be wonderful. The Truth is realized in an instant, the act is practiced step by step.

I met Al when I moved to Berkeley in 1973 and we played music together off and on for 35 years. Losing him is like having a huge thread yanked from the tapestry of my life. He was also one of my great show buddies in the '70s, and the guy who introduced me to the fact that there were tapes of Dead shows! He was cranky and opinionated and a hell of a guy who was loved by a hell of a lot of people. I wrote a review here if you're interested:http://sseeeeiinnggddoouubbllee.blogspot.com/ You'll also find blog entries from shows I've seen from various bands, including The Dead at MSG, Nassau, and Rothbury from Spring Tour. Folks, if you don't already know this, this guy is a national treasure and doesn't tour that much. I saw him at the Great American last night and I'm still amazed, and I already knew he was great! Upcoming tour dates are here; he's in Santa Cruz tomorrow and at UCLA on Saturday, then heads for Europe. Last night, in addition to his most famous compositions--e.g. "Mother in Law," "Working in a Coal Mine," "Yes We Can Can," and "Southern Nights," all the while playing piano like God if God came from New Orleans--he did two that Jerry recorded, "I'll Take a Melody" and "Get Out of My Life Woman." Don't miss this guy. Trust me.

I wish I was going to this, but alas... Jackie Greene and Los Lobos! Also a band called Poor Man's Whiskey. Note that there's now a VIP package for people who can't do standing room shows at the Fillmore any more! Hope some of you folks go and report back. I'm convalescing a bit, so I won't be doing nights on the town for a few weeks yet.
