    MY ONLY GRATEFUL DEAD CONCERT

This is the only time I've been lucky to see and hear the Dead live. The day was the 22nd October (not the 21st!). I was there with a good friend. After the first set, we said to each other: "Wasn't it a bit lame? They didn't really set off! Was it worth to travel 4 hours for this concert?" Although I had been delighted that the first song was "Bertha".
After the break things changed. "Playin' in the Band" made me higher and "Uncle John's Band" brought joy and dancing mood. It was the best UJB I had heard until then. And the Drums section with the Tibetan Bells was the real psychedelic experience! (BTW I wasn't loaded on anything!) The encore (The Weight) was another special thing. After the concert we knew we had experienced something extraordinary and drove happily homeward.

Can’t beat the experience of being in the stadium that night. Even got the DVD later but you can imagine that didn’t recreate any of the real thing, not that I expected it to. You don’t see that kind of hard partying these days at a concert, everyone’s tapping away at their phones. curd cheese

I remember it like it was yesterday, living in germany i was not accustomed to all the crowds partying outside the Festhalle, made me feel like travelling in a time-tunnel :-) As i came from the train-stations hundreds of people greeting me like an old friend!

This was my 1st show of europe tour 1990. My friends were there from the beginning but I jumped on at Frankfurt. It was surreal. If you saw a tye dyed sould rambling around the foreign streets-you know you had a friend. The only Heads that seemed to make it over from the states were pure, family, in it for the right reasons, Heads. The vibe was dynamic. Pure love. As the show went on the local Germans crowded the stage very intensely-they were trying to see what they were hearing-they couldn't beleive it. Most of the German concert goers were wearing leather pants and boots with big hair. It was a trip.

...dead on regarding your comments about the heads and the vibe. Entire tour was like that. None of the "I'm just here for the parking lot scene" crowd. But, I found this show to be particularly "dark" for me. The German fans were very heavy metal, spiked arm bands and stuff, and a lot of hard partying (drinking) American military guys there gave it a bad vibe for me. Much better times were ahead in Paris............

I spent the night on the Railway station with lots of others. Because it was a cold night the staff opened a room so we could get some sleep, before the early train to Hamburg a party was held on the train Bob - - - - - - - - - - - - - - Spanish Jam

Got tix for this show by chance in Stockholm from some heads hanging in the train station. There was an overnight train full of 'us' from Stockholm to Hamburg that just rocked all night. Girlfriend and I were touring around Europe for 5 months that fall and my parents were living in southern Germania at the time. I didn't get any wierd vibes from anyone at this show (that black Afghan I picked up in Amsterdam probably helped) but I was used to the Germans and their spiked wrist bands and leather pants. There were so many US soldiers there that they send Military Police to babysit them, and I didn't see any problems. Saw James Brown in this same venue in 93. Remember there was a band playing outside before the show.

Great show. Joined the US Army right out of high school, got stationed in Germany. Was quite excited to be there for a European tour. None of my metalhead friends wanted to see the show, got one friend from Cali to take the 45 minute train ride from Giessen to Frankfurt with me,...he was an instant convert. Bruce Hornsby was great on the keys. The vibe was awesome, one of my favorite shows.

I just realized that this show happened exactly 28 years ago: Long live the Dead and I'm forever grateful!
